Poetry Month: Week 1

Welcome and thank you for being part of Warrior English for National Poetry Month.

Instructions:

Post one poem of your original work each week. Anything we have worked on in class for the week is eligible, but remember that it must be polished. Check for spelling, punctuation, as well as refining from the draft work done in class, and be sure that your work is in poetry form with lines and stanzas--not paragraphs.

After you post your poem, reply on at least THREE different poems.

Identify any literary devices that are used within the poems that  you reply to along with appreciative and connective commentary.

Each week, please search out poems from people you haven't already replied to and at the very least vary your replies from only your current close friends.

Any DES who are doing this at a later date, do the poetry posts as if you were on the LIVE track and make comments as assigned.

What will be the same as the Slice of Life Story Challenge:

Building on our classroom community that we have developed, comments are encouraged. Remember to be encouraging, sharing, and positive. Any negativity will be deleted and participation points will be taken away.

  12. Trudging ore’ a sandy space,
    Underneath a sheet of stars,
    Nothing bought could ‘er replace,
    Natural magic hid’ in Scars.

    A rock of solitary stone,
    Plain and simple from without,
Then is cut and partly blown,
And shows the glitt’ring gems within.

    Tattered leather shields the pages,
    Crinkled, weathered, torn within,
    Seen as nothing after ages,

    Early wake
    Body quake

    Getting ready
    Feet are steady

    Grab your bags
    Prepare for lags

Shoes in boxes, jackets as well
Scanning items, far as I can tell

Walking up, I see the plane
    Excitement! Fear! I cannot tame

Getting on, I see my seat
    Waiting… Waiting… I hear a beat

Sound of jet engines starting to roar
    Shaking is the airplane floor

    Instantly, I’m pushed back
Pressure, speed, it does not lack

    Butterflies in my tummy
The feeling I get is kind of crummy

How did everything happen so fast, why do i always end up falling to the side i hate ,why do i always listen to the father of liars even when i know he is deceiving me trying to make me miserable. its time i lay down my guard to fully accept the one who has always been there and has forgiven me over and over again if i can count the times hes said i am forgiven its more than the drops in the ocean. its doesn't matter how broken your heart is he will make it a pure diamond(Jesus).

the sound is fierce and almost penetrating, as her eyes and ears are fixed on concentrating.
Her eyes open wide, to the sound of footsteps behind.
She turned and saw her younger brother standing there, shivering from the cold and wet air.
He stood there with tears dripping down his little face, she took him in her arms where he was placed.
She held him for the longest time, and told him that he was fine.
His fingers were icicles and his toes were numb, she knew at any moment his time would come.

    He studied carefully,
    Endlessly,
    The icy face before him.
He wondered who this person was,
    His brow a furrowed fringe.
    A shadow fell
    Across his eyes,
He leaned closer to the mirror,
His face no longer calm, composed.
    He wiped the glass,
    The face grew clearer.
    Then suddenly he understood
    His being, his countenance-
On the surface of his reflection,
In the corner of his glance.
    He bowed his head,
    Then raised his face,
    He smiled a tiny grin.
He'd found himself right in his eyes,
    He straitened his stance,
    He lifted his chin.

If one could see the face of Fate
He would have known him all along.
    A birth, a life,
    One's death, one's strife,
    Are marked upon his countenance.

If one could see the hand of Fate
His eyes would widely be opened.
    A moment in time,
    To serve or to crime,
His hand would be there always.

If one could hear the step of Fate
He would be dawned at his arrival.
    Regrets would ensue,
    Before a pale hue,
Would claim and take his existence.

But if one could know the Love of Fate

It gives the sense of procrastination mixed with urgency. "No longer can I snooze" really applies to us in all aspects of our life. We can not let ourselves be asleep to what is going on around us. We must arise and shine forth. We can't ignore the alarms that warn us in out lives. We have to be diligent. So.....yeah..... I liked it....

and holding tight saying, "I'd give it one more try."
    I miss tomorrow
and the hope of climbing one more tree,
    winding down,
    back and forth,
    forever -
    just me.

I wish I had words! I guess what I like was that this was not predictable to me. I tend to make the typical poem, so I really admired what you were able to achieve. It flowed so nicely, had true feeling behind it, and told a story! Well done!

    2. Why are you so good at this? Seriously, your poems are always so completely profound and connectable! I love this so much!

Words from page 66 of Journey to the Fringe:

    Love,
    Never happens all at once.
    Little by little,
    Loyalty and potential
    You realize.
    Absence of corrupted power,
    Force, and tempting.
    Trying to be
    Understanding, clear,
    And real.
    We could become one.
The mere idea was enough for him.
    Hence, they looked forward,
Centered on what was more important.

Good use of metaphor! I have the opposite problem of this poem: I get so caught up in growing that I forget to have fun.

Alas there was a beautiful sunset
The grainy and moist sand was wet
In the Horizon, there were colors galore
Down the monstrous wave I soared
We had to go, and I cry out “Just one more!”
Oh how the sunset I adore

Found Word Poem, Journey to the Fringe (Page 13)

    Despite feeling useless,
    The council is convincing.
I’ll search deep in the mountains,
    Longing for that perfect emerald.
    Like the cold, hard winter,
    I feel the anger creep,
As I find nothing but stone.
    Feeling betrayed by concern.
    Through hope,
    Despair is quickly diffused.

  37. Let us not forget,
    For forgetting is bad,
Why is it bad to forget oh why is it bad?
    It's bad to forget,
For to forget is to dare,
    To dare not care again.

  40. This a poem is about me when I was having a bad day and a sister missionary couldn't think of anything to make me happy so she said butter makes everything better and it was so ridiculous that I was rolling in laughter.

    when you are happy
or when you are in a sadness…

    I’ll be right beside you
    comfort you will find.

    If you need a bear,
    or a loving helpful butter…

I’ll be right here for you,
    I truly understand.

    I’LL BE HERE FOR YOU!

  41. My four words are star, pen, ham, and finally flower.

I look outside and I see the beautiful night sky and in that beautiful sky is the star.
And I draw them in my notebook using my own blue and pink awesome pen.
And on this awesome pen is a huge blue and white star shaped star.
And where did I get this pen I got it from the store that is where I got my pen.
Man that ham was like spam it was good even know I’ve never tasted that good ham.
Man those delicious tasting skittles were sour and to brighten it up I found a flower.
And that flower is going to look really good with that with that tender tasting ham.
Man that ham smelt like a rose witch is a kind of beautiful awesome red flower.

    Surrounded by maps and books
Outside the thunder and lightning clashes
    Inside hiding within the nooks
A child observing the emptied room
Feels the swaying of the hammock
That is hung by the dainty loom
And on the wall a painted samekh

  44. When I sit down it doesn’t work
When I lie down it doesn’t work
Even when I sleep it still doesn’t work
I can’t stop moving no matter what
I am flying one moment then the next I’m not
I try to sit and listen to my teacher
But the urge to sit still keeps getting weaker
My fingers start to tap on my desk
And I come up with what I will do next
I find a pencil and tap the wood
But my teacher asks to stop if I would.

I have very bad ADHD and it can be very difficult for me during school. Its a major reason I am homeschooled. I tried to make a positive kind of poem but it ended up a little sad... Oh well... hope everyone likes it and maybe even some can relate.

Personification of fate was a great idea. I'm reminded of the quote by Pres. Monson, "Decisions determine destiny." What we believe and act on now will change our fate.
