Slice of Life: DAY 31 aka THE LAST DAY

For the last day, I would like for each of you to write a reflection on your Slice of Life Story Challenge experience. Begin with your initial thoughts on the project (this year), explain any changes in your perspective throughout, and then end it with how you felt by the end of the project. Anyone doing the blog project, make sure to polish your writing to the best possible grammar before posting it on the blog.

Comments are welcome, but I ask, for this last day, that you comment a minimum of three replies to different people.

It has been wonderful to read all of your slices this year with their ups and downs and everything in between, and I hope that more of you than not have reaped the benefits of daily writing.

Happy Slicing!

  1. Wow! First comment! What to say? I can’t believe this is my las slice of life post! It seems so so so sad! I’ve loved reading all of your slices (especially Sister Jackson’s) and even sharing a little bit about my life with you guys. I am not the most comfortable with sharing my writing with others including people in my family so it was kind of hard the first two weeks or so, but now as the month has gone on I’ve gotten a little more comfortable showing you all my slices. I’m definitely not the best writer but I feel like Slice of Life has helped me to at least gather my thoughts and come up with ideas quicker. Thank you sister Jackson for setting this up for all of us, it has helped me so much! I can’t wait ‘til next March!

    3. I also thought it was easier to come up with ideas as time went on. I really liked how we could take a small part of our day to write about. This was much easier than trying to remember everything I had done in a day.

I feel like I'm saying goodbye to a good friend. I wish we could do slice of life the whole year. It has been so fun to post about my life. It feels like an online journal. I have enjoyed reading other student's posts, along with commenting on them. I am looking forward to slice of life next year. Signing off.

  6. Oh man the last slice..... what to say? Ah ok well I've been sick for a couple days and today like I said in English I FEEL SO ALIVE! I've been playing soccer in the snow during my breaks and that is like the best feeling EVER!!!! There's tons of reasons why I love soccer and that's one of them I can play in the dark, light, snow, rain, sunshine, and dark days and I would keep going on saying millions of reasons why I love soccer but I have to write on what I think about this project. Well my first thought about this is that its cool I like how you can get to know people better by reading what they write and lots of things people write are really interesting. I've really liked this project its changed my view on a lot of people and just to be clear I'm not saying that I don't like people. This was kind of hard for me to do with sports like track and soccer everyday since before this started but I did my best and that's what matters right? Well this is Malone signing out for the very last time. (This year) SEE YA!

  7. When Sister Jackson announced that we were doing the Slice of Life challenge again this year, I was honestly…frustrated. These first few months of have been so crazy. I have been more busy than I have been in a long time. Nearly every hour of my day is booked with something important. When I found out that there would be an option to do only 15 slices, instead of all 31, I was SO grateful. I would love to have sliced every day, but on my current “good, better, best” scale, it just didn’t take priority. On the days that I did take the time to slice, I was grateful and it gave me a few minutes to slow down and appreciate the beauty of everyday life. By the end of this project, I was grateful that I participated in at least some of it. There were some days that my heart took control and wrote some things that my head needed to hear. I am grateful for this month of slicing because now I have a collection of lots of slices of my thoughts. Now I have a “cake” of March 2016.

  8. I would just like to say this was such a wonderful opportunity to write little snippets about ourselves. When we started writing slices on the first day I had no idea what to write. But after the days progressed and as I began to read other people's slices. I was really feeling inspired by a lot of them. It motivated me to start writing about my passions and the things I am thankful in my life.I am so happy for these amazing slices, it was really nice to commune with teens all around the world reading about their stories. When I first started Slice Of Life, I'll be honest, I didn't like it at all. Yet somehow I've managed to write a post for everyday. I made it through surgery, my brother coming for spring break and he and I driving to Utah. Then I actually started to look forward to it, which my brother said that he thought it was great, but his smile looked about as genuine as a four dollar bill. I've always been a terrible journal writer and only write down momentous occasions, but with Slice of Life, I found something to write about everyday, which was almost weird for me. Overall, I've enjoyed doing this project and I'm grateful for the learning opportunity it has provided. Reading other peoples Slices was fun and helped me to get to know them better, even if we've never met face to face. I was just one of the things we get to experience during the awkward moment between the pre-existence and our resurrection. I have a quote that says: "It's not the ink and the paper that matter, but the hand that holds the pen. Or in this case: "It's not the screen or the keyboard the matters, but the fingers that hit the keys."
    Thanks, Sister Jackson!

  10. When Sister Jackson said we were doing slice of life I was kind of mad. I remember doing it last year and hating it! I started slice of life late 'cause I didn't want to do it at all! After about four or five posts I was hooked! I couldn't wait to do it every day! The moment I got home from school I got on the computer and started typing up my thought for the day. It helped me in my personal life to be able to say what was on my mind. Thank you for slice of life! Make sure students in the future have to do it even though they think it's torture, they'll thank you later for it!

  12. The slice of life... Life of Slice... When Sister Jackson referred to the Slice of Life, I thought of a My Little Pony episode my nieces liked to watch often. When I heard what it was, I was really excited. It reminded me about an assignment I did in eighth grade in our Writer's notebook. But this is so much better. When I heard we get to post them on an official blog (That made you feel cool) and get feedback and give it to fellow students?? My hands were itching to grab the closest pen and paper nearby and get down to it! My mind has been involuntary creating slices throughout the month. I got excited at the thought of checking my computer, something I rarely do. Oh, I will miss it. Carrying around my purple notebook everywhere. Reading your slices, laughing, pondering, commenting. Logging on to see the huge slab of chocolate cake every time I come.
So... Au Revoir, Slice of Life...

When Sister Jackson announced the SOLSC, I swallowed, knowing this couldn’t be too bad. I would find creative things to slice about, right? I would post my rambling thoughts on schedule, right? The raffle sounded kind of fun, but I’m the person whose name slip repels the raffle ticket drawer’s hand. So I didn’t let myself get emotionally attached to any of the prizes, though I planned on slicing all 31 days.
Well, I only sliced 21 days. I won’t be getting that mug, or those plane tickets. But I also challenged myself to write with polish, intelligence, and beauty. Instead of physical prizes, I received a love of recording pieces of my life. Contrary to instruction, some of my slices were Texas-sized slices, but each word was measured, and each sentence was weighed. I genuinely enjoyed the time that I spent crafting every single one.
This challenge gave me confidence as well. Lately, I’ve doubted my writing ability and quality. The kind comments and praise over the month were reassuring, telling my nervous, negative and critical side to back up. Reading the slices of others firmed my resolve to write. Scrolling through my personal document of slices brings a smile to my heart. And the opportunity to get to know y’all a little better was a joyful experience. Thank you very, very, very much.

Last year, I didn't fully engage myself into posting on the blog, so I made a goal. to post everyday this year and get inspiration from others. I enjoyed reading everyone's posts and their kind comments on mine. It was incredible to be able to connect to so many other people that I've never met before. I love that here, at Liahona,we have such an opportunity. I've learned so much, this year, on how to improve my writing and grammar. Thank you Sister Jackson and all those who participated in this challenge. It's been a wonderful journey, you all are amazing people. Thank you for blessing my life, by your inspiring and uplifting words! And now, on to a new adventure. . .

Well said! I am glad that you chose to do things differently this time to improve your experience this time! You really took as much as you could out of this experience, and I admire that! I hope you can apply this to other endeavors in your life.

You know, people have said that the announcement of this assignment/activity left them with the emotion of either being frustrated, excited, questionable, or having hopes for enjoyment. When I heard of it, I was all these emotions, some more elevated than others, and yet was none of them at the same time. But what really helped me to feel this motivation towards slicing every day is that nothing comes our way by accident. That which we think is accident could rightfully be so, but can also be manipulated to being something with a purpose. I took this assignment as a means to be strengthened, to be what I regularly am not. Many times have I tried writing in my journal, and every time I have tried to do so consistently has failed. But now, as I look upon each of my posts, I see an entry of my life, or a slice if you will, concerning my life at a time when I was a 17 year-old attending Liahona. These slices describe what I feel, and do so in the best way possible, for each delivery needed to be perfect and powerful.

I am currently learning two languages: espeñol and 日本人 . I am also learning two different programming windows; Web Design and App Development. This is on top of my daily liana work. And I love every second of it. Is anyone else passionate about learning? I hope so.

  25. At the beginning of this month, I saw an amazing opportunity ahead, a challenge, ant I accepted it. Each day I searched for a sliver of my day to share, a fraction of my thoughts, a piece of my observations, a speck of my creativity, a slice of my life. Each day I shared a bit of my experiences with others, and each day I found new light in the amazing slices of my friends and fellow students. Each day I chose one of the millions of wonderful ideas in my head to expound upon, and I only touched the surface! A meager 31 slices, 31 topics covered, out of the whole universe! I need to write more, but now this slicing comes to an end, at least until next year. There is still so much to write! So many dreams and thoughts and things! I think I will continue to capture little smidgens of my life, if only for myself, to keep my mind busy and my skills sharp. So long ‘til next year,

I was not excited about this project. That is just because I am not really into writing. Although, I did a lot better with it this year in comparison to last year. I was more on top of it, so it was far less stressful. I did not let myself be negative because that would just make it less enjoyable. In the end it was fine. My problem is that I tend to not enjoy my writing, so it is hard for me to like what I put out. What I did like is that I have improved on my ability to write consistently and on many different topics. To be honest, my favorite part was just getting to read what everyone else wrote. There are so many talented writers here! However, what I loved most was that it did not matter if we considered ourselves or not. Everyone was just writing as themselves. It was their life and their thoughts. I enjoyed getting to see all the different perspectives on life. Especially since this is my last year, I enjoyed, in a sense, getting to know all of you.

    1. I like what you said here, this is what I thought too! That even if you feel like you don't have the most confidence in your writing, that people will still be ok with it and they won't judge you. Reading others' slices was so fun, seeing how people see the world and peeking into everyone's daily lives through their slices.

    2. Reading the other slices is by far the best part! You are not alone in that feeling. I am glad you could see improvement, but I also hope that you realize how much talent there is in you, and you can develop it. Just keep up that positive attitude, and you will go far.

I like how you evaluated this challenge. We tend to file a day in our brains as one unit, one segment. This blog challenged us to break open that box and see the thousands of small beautiful and precious things which make every day unique, so unique thae you could never put two days into the same catigory because you could never even compare the two

  28. You know it wasn't nearly as bad for me now as it was last year. But I still didn't like it. I still didn't enjoy doing it everyday, but when I had the option to do this instead of a project I was like "heck yeah" and I did this instead. That probably made the biggest difference to be honest. Much better motivation than whatever you gave last year (I don't really remember last year anyhow).

I agree with you. Last year I hated doing the challenge, I felt like everyone else had an easy time and for some odd reason I just drew the short straw and just wouldnt come up with stuff cleaver enough or smart enough to post. This year was different, I really wanted to participate but, other forces outside of my control were stopping me which made me frustrated with the challenge. I guess its never going to be easy but, the harder you work the better the reward.

    3. I felt the same way at the start. Now I don't feel like that hardly at all.

    4. The difference from this year and last is that you had the power of choice. Since I was brand new, I hadn't thought of alternate ideas for how students could slice every school day and do something different with it. I'm glad you had a more positive experience this round.

Everyone's slices are so specific and well written. So, I'll try to live up to them... It's always nice to be recognized and be able to voice your opinion. Through the blog where able to share what's going on in our lives. For 31 day slicers, and even regular sizes, it creates a habit of discipline. For an entire month we share our thoughts with our friends, peers, and teachers. Everyone benefits someway or another, during this time. We all begin to feed off of each other's comments and insight. We gain more knowledge through other people's slices. Overall the experience created self-discipline, a tad of annoyance, and a gain of insight. Thanks Sister Jackson!

My first thought for this year’s Slice of Life Challenge was that it was going to be easy and that I was definitely going to write for all 31 days. Since I did it last year and knew what to expect I knew I could do it. As always, it started out pretty easy and then it got harder as I started to run out of ideas. I wondered how I was going to write for all 31 days, but I kept racking my brain for ideas and I have made it. Something I had to keep reminding myself of was that I didn’t have to write a super long post every day. I had to keep telling myself to keep it short, simple, but fun and interesting. Now that we’re at the end I feel relieved that it’s over but also sad. I loved letting people get to know more about me, and I loved getting to know more about others. Slice of Life was awesome this year.

Many a night I spent sat cloaked in that unyeilding cloak of night, the partial glow of the computer like ambrosia sustaining me. My day shattered before my eyes into a million pices, exaustivly examining fragmented moments, my fingers lingering over thoughts, emotions, and glances. Attempting to assemble a mosaic of birdsong and shredded sunlight; a pice of art worthy of the assesment of my peers. This challenge streched me to my limits and many times I dident achive that standard, because every day I was reluctant to do so. But it still provoced me to delve to the depths of my writing ability; and for that, I must bow my often mistakfuly pridful knees to our teacher, Sister Jackson.

When I first realized that we were doing the SOLSC, I felt a mixture of dread and hope. I knew I could be better than last year, in both writing and turning in my slices on time. Even though I was not as timely as I had hoped, I got so much out of writing, commenting, and reading. I love sharing with others and getting feedback. Reading little bits of people’s lives, and how I can relate, helps me grow closer to people I have never met. I’ve noticed that the more time and energy I put into a slice, the better I feel about myself as a writer. I too feel like this activity was not solely meant for our individual selves, but for the unionization for the DE and Academy population, in some part. It is awesome because it takes advantage of technology to work out a way for communication to be drawn between a people of great distances, and still has a purpose in doing so. But yes, I too love Slice of Life. When I first heard it, I knew it would bring the same spectacular results as it did last year, and I was right.
