Remember that you are writing a snippet of your life--a slice--not giving us the whole pie, so write well but write with brevity.
After you post your slice, strive to comment on someone else's slice.
How to get entries into the 31-Day Slicer Raffle at the end of the challenge:
- Post your slice here each day.
- Comment on at least one other slice per day.
- Slice every day for the entire month (31 days), and you will get an entry into the drawing.
- Make at least one comment on other slices every day for the entire month, and you will get an entry into the drawing.
The raffle is for going the extra mile. Distance Education students are more than welcome to participate in the 31-Day challenge to be in the raffle.
Any DES who are doing this at a later date, I will reserve a few small prizes to do a raffle at the end of April for any late comers. Please email me when you are finished, so I will know to put your name in the raffle before I do it.
Sister Jackson's Slice: Day 1
Dishes. They seem to have a life of their own around this place. I find them under bed, yet, supposedly, we only eat in the kitchen area. Could they possibly sprout legs and walk up the stairs and hide underneath the beds because they don't want to get washed? Maybe they prefer having the companionship of broken crayons, loose change, and the occasional dirty sock (and that's only one because we all know socks only go into the wash one at a time!). You don't know.

Life is the gateway to eternal happiness, the time for trials and overcoming, and the means of achieving greatness in the eyes of yourself and God's; it is not meant to be progressed at a constant state, but one that is gradually inclining. Yet, many have decided to throw its value away, and have decided to take the temporal happiness of this world along with the eternal misery of Heaven either due to ignorance or misjudgment. They think not upon what can be used to assist them in their endeavor to be greater, but rather on what lies before them while having this simple view of mortal probation, to have as much fun before the day has ended. Others shall do their work for them, and they to either let this world crumble by being silent, or being the ones ushering in the destruction because of what they are saying. This time we are living is not meant for the simple-hearted, it is for the strong willed. We must fight to achieve that greatness we have uniquely been blessed with, and must prepare ourselves for that war by constantly wearing our Armor of God, and never opening our gates to Him who seeks our life's worth. Only when we strengthen ourselves can we be strong enough to enter His kingdom, and only then, when we have endured to the end with all our hearts, can we find that eternal happiness waiting for us on the other side, with open arms and a love incomparable to anything of this world.

ReplyDeleteMusic is a wonderful way to rejuvenate and uplift the soul. As I was getting ready for the day, I was listening to, "BYU Vocal Point Radio" on Pandora. I love listening to good, uplifting, and inspiring music. As I listen to this type of music I am better able to have Spirit with me. I find this helps to keep my thoughts happy and positive. There tends to be a lot of church songs that play on, "BYU Vocal Point Radio" and listening to them with a different twist is, to me, is very enjoyable. As I listen to these types of songs, my thoughts are turned toward the Savior and I'm reminded of his great example. Of how I need to be striving to be like him but also be a good example to others. I am able to feel God's love for me, as I listen to this type of music. To know that I even when I make mistakes He still loves me and is willing to help me over come my shortcomings and imperfections. I do enjoy other music as well but I've found that this type of music helps me have to have a better day in addition to scripture study and prayer.
Music can also go the other way. You have to be careful with the music you listen to because it can be negative and evil.
DeleteRemember to keep it to a *slice* of life. I love your thoughts though. Music can bring or push away the spirit. Wonderful!
DeleteTotally agree I love music especially uplifting music.

DeleteMusic is the place you can find emotion pooled together, and then released as a fountain reaching out its rushing hand to whatever place it can touch, it being your mind and heart. It has the power to comfort, the strength to rally, and even gives enough force for a tear or two to be shed from the eyes of the hardest man. It has the power to turn your thoughts to the savior, and finding such an accompaniment for that task is progressively dwindling, but always present, for God will always be here.
DeleteI really liked this! This made me realize the importance and the power that music influences us. Great job!
DeleteFamily changes how your mind sees life. My uncle has been staying with us, and talking to him for a minute or 2 has flipped a switch in my head and how I look at the gospel. I could feel the power as he bore testimony and told me a story about his mission. Now I know without a doubt I will be serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
ReplyDeleteIt's quite interesting how one situation can change us forever. Great slice.

Exercise, it seems so hard, yet so good for you. I know that burns are bad for your body and yet, why do we need to "feel the burn". It's almost like the entire point to exercise is hurting yourself, just look at P90x.

DeleteSpencer, I completely agree! At the same time, if exercising was easy, everyone would be buff. That is also a good way to look at the gospel. If we didnt have to do anything or work to build our testimony, we would all be the same.
Yeah I know exactly what you mean Spencer! I exercise often but eat tons of junk food while I'm at it. I tend to make running even more harder on myself by not eating healthy.
DeleteClothes. Why are they always dirty? When you have to pick them up continually, it gets very obnoxious. Oops you weren’t supposed to know that I leave my clothes on the floor, but hey, come on I mean it is only when I get in a hurry. (This is about every minute of every day) At least I’m trying and the last few days I picked them all up. Except for the ones piled up in the top of my closet :) hehe
ReplyDeletehaha i know were you are coming from! I always have mounds of dirty clothes, but its like 90% towels and 2% socks and 8% clothes
DeleteHahaha, relatable! Clothes are evil. I have this chair in my room that just gets all the clothes piled on it somehow. They must jump up there themselves :p
DeleteMy clothes seem to always end up on the floor. When I do put them away they seem to come out on their own and place themselves across my bed, chair, bookshelf. It's craziness! I love your slice!

Late night around 10, I was on my bed. There is one broken light and I was just looking at it. Then I started to think. Some times you will stand alone. Keep in mind I was so deliriously tired.
ReplyDeleteHaha, yess. Short and sweet
DeleteThis topic brings to my remembrance a talk given by President Monson titled: 'Dare to Stand Alone'. Now, what I refer to is not a broken light, but one radiantly illuminating the room for others to see. When you stand alone in doing what is right, your countenance will shine forth, and many things others could not see will be made known to them because of the light you have brought them. Do not let others trip and fall because you lacked the courage to stand and help them, share with them the 'light and life of Christ', and by you they can receive the happiness they seek.
DeleteI have a bestie who I’ve never met. We communicate through text, FaceTime, and the internet. While FaceTiming yesterday, we begun planning for when we get to meet each other in June. He’ll be coming here to Salt Lake City Utah on his way to Dominican Republic for a family reunion. While he’s here for less than a day, we hope to have a blast! We want to go Ice Skating, get some ice cream at Leatherby’s, and then just hang out at my house. I can’t wait to meet him!

I've been reminiscing about California lately... The warm breeze, palm trees, white beaches, blue skies, everything I love! It's like a dream come true. I'd go back in a heartbeat!

DeleteIf I was ever something else? Anything? What would I be? To say i'd want to be a human would be a typical answer. But lets say that's not an option! I have to be something else! I could be a bird, with majestic wings and I could fly away. Or I could be a rose in a secret garden. But no! If I really could be anything I would be a star! Imagine shining bright and proud for the whole world to see? Imagine looking down on the earth and seeing all of its beauty? I would sparkle and twinkle in the heavens god created. When I finally died out my remains would help create new life, so in away I would be reborn and live for eternity! And that's what I would be, a star for all the earth to see.
ReplyDeleteCharity your writing is like a tapestry! You give such an amazing visual description on this topic, (which I also love.) I've thought about being something else as well. It's a really difficult question to answer! I think that if I were to be something else, I'd be a dolphin, a wolf, or a falcon. I can't decide!
DeleteIf I had to be an animal? I'd probably be a Parasaurolophus. That'd be something cool to be.
DeleteThe idea of being something else is a very thought-provoking question and I like how you described it. It seems cool to be something else or try something new. But really we don't need to be something else but instead change or shape ourselves into the kind of person or thing we want to become.

You know having done this before it really isn't as bad as I remember. Oh sure I'm gonna die thinking about what to write about, at least I won't have a terrible attitude doing it everyday like how I did last year. I guess one of the reasons I don't mind doing it now is that I'm in France now. Strange right? That I have to be an ocean away in some country that doesn't even speak English to actually appreciate everything you do, in English. Well I guess that's just how it goes. One of the things I'm most excited for (besides seeing my girlfriend again) is being back in a country where everybody speaks English. That has me wishing the days were done the most.

ReplyDelete“EMMA!” I cried, into the receiver, trying not to laugh. Her laughter was coming in, loud and clear, all the way from Texas.
“What McieZ?” I could almost see her, false, innocent expression.
“Don’t ‘What McieZ?’ me! We can’t kill her! We can’t kill any of them!” I paced across my bedroom, phone pressed to my ear.
“We have to kill someone! Things are getting too boring!” She groaned.
“Em! We can’t kill one of THEM though! What about someone else?” I pleaded.
“We just have them both run over by a truck! SWOOSH!” She giggled, anticipating my reaction.
“EMMA LEE EVANS!” I half yelled with exasperation and the rest was laughter.
“Yes…?” I could hear her trying to keep it together, as laughter crept up my own throat.
“We can’t-“ Any frustration I had attempted to muster slipped away and I started to laugh. “Em, you realize if anyone else were listening, in on this conversation, they’d think we were crazy, right?”

Aren't best friends just... well, the best? I love that every pair of friends has different ways of being silly with each other. For my best friend Savannah and me, the general outline of our nonsense conversations go like this. I do or say something absolutely ludicrous, she rolls her eyes and tries in vain to stifle her laughter, I say/do something even more bizarre, she breaks down in tears of laughter. Then the rolls are switched around.

DeleteOn Saturday, I had the privilege of spending the evening with three very good friends. In anticipation of this event, my mother purchased a fire pit, because my friends and I are a bunch of pyromaniacs, and we love fire. When Saturday came and the fire pit was not yet assembled, I knew that it was my calling to put it together, so I grabbed a pocketknife and a screwdriver and went into battle, fancying myself very important and very in charge. Much to my displeasure, this fire pit also fancied itself very high and mighty, and was determined to deter my efforts. It hid the bolts while my back was turned, and it squirmed out of the way when I tried to attach pieces. But I had a screwdriver in my hand, therefore, I was destined to win. I beat that fire pit into submission, and it only took about five times longer than the manual said it would. So my friends arrived, and though they were never told the story of my undertaking, I knew, and the fire pit knew, that I was the one who had defeated it.

We’re reading in the 2nd Nephi-Isaiah section; we’re on a chapter about how the wicked will be destroyed, but I feel peace. Even though life is far crazier than the worse storms of nature sometimes (most times), being together in an eternal, gospel-centered family provides a shelter to secure me, and you, from the worse of it.

ReplyDeleteThe floor groans and whines underneath my weight as I timidly step closer and closer to my parents bedroom. It's 10:30 p.m. and I am on a mission. All the lights in the house have been turned off except for my room and my brother's room...and the stairwell light that I had to turn on in order to see where I'm stepping. It's all part of my master plan. I've reached the open doorway to my parents bedroom; my dad is snoring quite loudly and the only light is that of the digital alarm clock numbers against the wall that I am facing. Now comes the part of my plan that can't fail. "Mom?"....... "Mom?"......."Mom are you asleep?"........my plan failed. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to use emergency plan 74538, but it seems I have no choice. I quietly tiptoe out to the living room and switch on a nearby lamp to give myself a little more light for what I am about to do next. Then I sneak back to my parents bedroom doorway and hold my breath as I take a cautious step into the room. Taking two steps to my left I feel for the desk that I know is there. I reach under and feel for the object I am looking for. I find it. I grab hold of it, and slowly draw it out from under the desk. My emergency plan is working until something that I was too hasty to think about makes a bumping noise as it slides of the object in my hand and hits the other items under the desk. I hear a sudden movement from the bed mere inches from where I'm standing. I stop. Think! Think! Think! I've got it! I quickly finish sliding the object out from under the desk and in two big steps am out of my parents room and into the living room. I turn off the lamp, hurriedly step through the kitchen, down the stairs (turning off the stairwell light as I go), and run into the safety of my beloved bedroom. I hope my parents don't think I was a robber, and I didn't take anything that I wouldn't return. But I'll let them sleep on it and see what their reaction is in the morning. I hope it's good. ;)
The suspense is killing me! What is it? The hidden stash of chocolate? It is something fun? Something that belongs to you or to your mom? Ahhhh??!?!?!?

DeleteSorry I didn't tell all of you what it was I snuck out of my parents room last night. I felt that my story had already gone on too long and I wasn't quite sure how to put it in. Anyway, if you don't know already, it was the laptop that I am currently typing on so that I could do my Slice of Life entry last night in the quite solitude of my room without disturbing anything else. If you're also curious to know, I told my family the story this morning and they all laughed. And my mom did wake up and see me sneak out of the room with the laptop bag.
I didn't do much yesterday, but I did a back walkover on the trampoline. I did a back walkover, all by myself, one swift movement and everything! I still can't believe I did one by myself, is so cool! I can't believe how easy it is and don't know why I couldn't do it before. Back walkovers it's funny you say to your friends "back walkovers are easy, I can do it." Then you try and get embarrassed because you said you can then you can't.

ReplyDeletePreface: a few weeks ago me and my friend KyAnne invented two characters , Mark and Luanne the Civil War time starcrossed lovers who often communicate through romantic letters, this is Mark's reply to letter from Luanne requesting a break up.
The Mark and Luanne Chronicles part one:My love, my muse, my everlasting flower, LuAnne. Every word uttered from your sacred lips is gospel, every sentence the flows from the tip of your pen is doctrine. My love for you will not be silenced by these faux mumbling's of your injured mind. I know these lines written upon parchment are not alike to your true emotions.

My first day of school
ReplyDeleteI I grumpily get up on a dark grey day,
I brush my teeth,
I comb my hair,
I'm a mess plotted everywhere!
First day of school,
freaked out of my brains,
I stand in the rain, watching for the big white bus.
After many long minutes of sitting,
and fast beating of my heart too,
I scuffle off the bus, wave goodbye to my brothers,
and I slowly walk with so many others.
I'm new and I'm scared,
I look at my feet,
I'm hardly skipping,
there is no beat in my feet!
I want to go home and lie in my bed,
But mother would give me a spanking instead!
I arrive at the door, with everyone staring,
They don't even look nice, or even caring!
I sit far away,
With people gossiping away,
But I just read for a while on the grey day.
Soon recess approaches,
I don't want to go,
But I have to because my teacher says so!
I sit under a tree,
With kids running around me,
Who are staring with their big baby eyes.
Lunch starts approaching,
I hurry on my way,
I wish I did not have to stay!
I quietly sit on a big empty table,
until little kid monsters make that unable!
I soon find a table with no one in sight,
and I eat my lunch with zero delight.
Soon lunch is over,
No more children in sight,
and I walk back alone,
Not feelin so light.
Finally school is over,
I hop on the bus,
Me and brothers make no fuss.
We sit in the back far away from the horrid "Click Clack"!
I look out the window all mopey and sad, thinking,
"I will never be glad, but only sad!"
Hop off the bus,
And run as fast as I can,
And shoot into my bed
With the air blowing fan.
Momma comes in and lovingly says,
"Honey, don't we all have bad days?"
I mumble a yes,
And take a deep breath from my hard pounding chest.
I finish my homework,
and I pack my bag,
In great hopes that tomorrow I will be glad.

This morning I was able to get up easily on time, eat breakfast, get ready for the day and get to seminary on time. Because of this I was early enough to plan my devotional and make it a good one!
haha. I know the exact feeling! I often remember forgetting when it's my time for devotional and often don't share the greatest scriptures. This is also great because it shows the importance of preparation, beforehand!

ReplyDeletePhotography is an amazing art. Not only do you decide what kind of photography you like to do, but also how you picture it to look like in your mind. Photography is more than just snapping a shot of something its more of painting a picture in your head and making it come to life. The picture itself tells a story, like how you felt at that moment, or how much you changed overtime. The joy of it brings a smile to your face, or tears to your eyes but that memory of it will always be treasured. My favorite quote I've learned says "Life is like a camera, you focus on what's important capture the good times develop from the negative and if things don't work out take another shot." I absolutely love photography, I've recently been practicing my photography a lot on people. Yeah, I may not be a professional at it but if it doesn't work out I take another shot.
I really like your insights here! I love the way you applied photography to the beauty of it's emotional side:)

There is those moments in life that we all dread and that for me is doing the dishes. After the dishes are done I like the feeling that I get that I am done. The awesome thing is that I have a dishwasher and am able to just put the dishes inside the dishwasher and let them get cleaned. I love to see the dishes and are cleaned. It gives me a relief when I finally am done with the dishes. Also when the dishes are cleaned first in the morning it is much easier for the rest of the day.

Pieces of hair that decide to be rebellious and stick off your head like a 17.3 foot rainbow in the sky. Now I have to restart the whole hairstyle. Man, this takes way to much concentration. Ugh hairs, why can't you just cooperate!? Plus, working in a mirror is such a struggle. It takes like 20 minutes just to touch the place I want to go because everything is backwards. This shouldn't be so hard. Time to call backup. Brush, check. Comb, check. Water, check. Hairspray, check. Elastic band, check. As well as other electric appliances need we take drastic measures. Finally, after wrestling my own head like a dog chasing her tail, my hair looks somewhat presentable. I've tamed the rainbows and caged the dragon. I am victorious.

ReplyDeleteHave any of you ever thought about how weird the human body is? The fact that we can just move our arms and legs without hesitation? That we can stand up, walk around, talk. And don't get me started on brains. We are actually living life because of our brains. Our brains send signals to our hearts and remembers what we learned in math class that day. It can store memories, lessons, people and other very important things. I think it's fascinating that something the size of our fists held together can be so crucial and important to the human body.

ReplyDelete"Don't throw chile at the sun," my older sister once told me, "or it'll burn you." I was a very gullible child that believed everything my older sister, who I looked up to, told me. I was so horrified of chile and I never ate it growing up for fear that I might one day "accidentally" throw chile up at the sun. I think about it now and realize how silly that sounds but back then it made so much sense since the sun is hot and the chile is hot and throwing chile at the sun will anger it making it burn you. I was too afraid to tell the reason why I didn't eat chile so I would just say I didn't like chile. People I grew up around thought that it was so strange that I 'didn't like' chile since I lived in New Mexico. I remember that after my sister had told me that little lie, I asked my mom if it was true. Only, at the time I asked her was when she was very busy and wasn't really listening to me and so she told me yes [it was true] and for the longest time I would not eat chile.

DeleteHaha, when I was younger, I wouldn't eat my beans, not for any particular reason, I just didn't like them. I remember being carried to my bed because I had fallen asleep at the dinner table with my plate of beans set before me. But as you grow up, you learn that some things must come about, and you'd better plug your nose and take a swallow than just sit around waiting for something to happen.
Years ago when I was about six or seven years old, I found some kittens in my backyard.
ReplyDeleteTheir mother was gone and she never came back, so my siblings and I took care of them and found them homes. We kept two of them and named them Shasta and Charcoal.
A few years after this Charcoal died from a spider bite, and last year Shasta got hit by a car.
Its kinda a sad slice of life, but I made a lot of fun memories with them.
Better to have memories than dreams. . .
DeleteThough it may be sad, thank you for sharing it.
I did not eat breakfast. I woke up 10 minutes before I was supposed to leave for school, and school is 30 minutes away!
ReplyDeleteI did not wake up to the sound of bacon cheering and applauding at my arrival to the kitchen. I did not wake up to the warm and inviting smell of fried eggs and fresh toast! No, today I fell out of bed, slipped into my clothes like a slug, dropped myself like a dead rag doll into my car and drove away.
On my journey to the school house, I passed a McDonald's advertisement claiming that they had, "All day breakfast!" I drove faster so that the sausage, egg, and bacon biscuit sandwiches could taunt me no longer! I walked into the school building and the vending machine started laughing in my face!! And now, I am in English class where there is a picture of a moist, delicious cake displayed on the screen. This cake serves only as a reminder that my stomach is empty, and all alone.

DeleteI like your characterization of the food advertisements mocking at you and the vending machine laughing at you. Also you described the food so well you made me hungry.
The powdery snow on the ground outside my house is more interesting than it seems. The sun radiates its beams of light right on top of it, which sets a sparkling affect of what looks like billions of diamonds. The shadow of a tree is outlined on the snow into a shape of a family tree that holds the most glittering treasures. My family is more valuable to me than any sparkling diamond I have ever seen.

The SMELL, the smell of a brisket smoking at 170 degrees for 12 hours. The hunger and pain in my stomach as I rushed out the door. The agony of through 5 hours of school and still not being able to eat it till 7:00. This is my life, being tempted and persuaded to eat yet not having money for the vending machine, not bringing a much, and not having anything microwavable at home to eat. This is the way I will die.

ReplyDeleteToday (and yesterday) in seminary we had a lesson on polygamy. I shared that I had a direct ancestor that had been a polygamist. This ancestor, Dudley Leavitt, had five wife's and about 50 children! Can you imagine family reunions? I can't even hardly imagine breakfast! Anyway, if your last name is leavitt then you can (almost) always trace your lineage back to Dudley. So if you're a Leavitt, We're related!
Oh boy, I suppose whenever I heard someone say they were a polygamist I was only interested in the numbers, and hadn't really thought upon what would go on inside of the home. Your slice has opened a new door to me, and though I be not a Leavitt, I still enjoyed reading it.

Dirty clothes. Dirty clothes aren't fun at all. Especially when they just pile up in the corner of my room. I just did all my dirty laundry yesterday, there was a lot. I need to do laundry more often. But I forget things a lot, probably too much. Oops.
I share the same fault, except it be worse because I do this with my clean clothes. Once you have dirty clothes, they remain dirty. But if you have clean clothes just lying around, it won't be soon until you find it to be infested with as much filth as if it had been dirty in the first place. I myself do my laundry quite often, but the process from getting it from the drier to its proper place in my room takes some time.

It reaches out and tries to grab me when I wake up to go to seminary. My bed helps me sleep and sleep is essential for me to work well in life. Also one third of my life is in bed!
Staying up late, finishing homework and daily chores has exhausted me and yet, has helped me in the best ways. When I get lazy and decide to be irresponsible I realize that I'm not as happy or satisfied with my self. In fact, I'm more disappointed. Hard work really is for our benefit.
