Slice of Life: DAY 7

Sister Jackson's Slice:

This slice makes a week of them, and even I am wondering how I will make it through this challenge. A couple of things keep me going.

First, how on earth can I expect my students to make it through thirty-one days of writing without me leading the charge? It would be pretty pitiful if I couldn't make it, but they did. Pih. Tih. Ful.

Second, this is my fifth year participating in this Slice of Life writing madness. It's too perfect of a streak to ruin things--at least that's what I keep telling myself each time I stay up too late or get up extra early to get this stuff busted out.

Slice of Life is worth it. The ideas, the feedback, the support, the challenge: I love it all.

Now, I just need to get through twenty-six more slices, and I'm home free . . . until next March.

Leave your slice in the comments below and make a reply to others!
Happy slicing!

    1. Yes. . . you are first. Think well upon it, for due to this position and the extreme covetousness that comes in sitting where you have placed yourself, I doubt you shall find it again without a great amount of difficulty. So enjoy this glory for as long as you can hold onto, for some time may lapse before you find it again. . .

The feeling of being first is truly an amazing feeling. It is unlike any other, but It is definitely worth some bragging rights.

    3. Its funny I think how such little things matter so much. Like being first. It isn't exactly very important literally if you know what I mean. Yet it is important to you and that is what matters:)

It's hard to track the value of your progression when you yourself walk the pathway of its inclination, for you find no apparent change except that which you are familiar with as you continue pressing forward. It is only when you look down that you realize the height you have reached, and only when you look back that you see how far you truly have gone. 'Tis like how you can fill the cup to beyond the brink of its capacity; it is only when you add one more drop that you see it overflow and release itself. I have felt this way as I sit on the bench set before the piano every day. I can't see where the transition between one-hand to two-hands came, nor can I see the gradual change from where I started to where I am now; nothing has been provided for me to see what consists of the middle ground. But, despite what I don't know, I do know it is a gift to the fullest, and know it was meant to be a thing of pleasure as well as a blessing meant for my life.

    1. I had to laugh at the piano metaphor. I myself have piano students that I teach. I marvel at how quickly they have progressed, when I looking back at myself, remember how long it took for me to understand and play the piano. I thank them for not being like me, and that they are more understanding. I am thankful for little children and for the great blessing that they are to the world.

I have noticed that I barely ever notice the progress I make as it happens, but when I look back and see how far I've come, it's amazing. Well done Caleb, and good luck with the rest of your posts.

My day started pretty early this morning. I don't have seminary this week because it's Spring Break for most of my friends here. So why in the world would I wake up around 5am if I didn't have early morning seminary? Here's the short story. . . My friend got asked to Prom on Saturday night, and she came up with a clever way to respond. The guy that asked her isn't on Spring Break until next week, so he still has seminary. So my friends and I went to Walmart around 6am to get all the stuff we need for the "reply" which consisted of ice cream, cereal, and a poster. We drove to our stake center and decorated his car with window paint and balloons. My friend sat on top of his car, with poster in hand waiting for him to come out. Her response was, "Jefferson, I CEREALisly am so glad you asked me to Prom. Ice-scream, YES!" The "Cerealisly" was stretching it a bit but it worked. ;) When he came out of seminary, he was pretty surprised. Haha, it was a pretty fun adventure to start the day off. ;)

  4. One of my brothers is getting ready to move to Utah so that he can have a better influence in his teen years before his mission. This is not the only reason for him to go to Utah, but it is the chief reason. I failed to see his logic in such a task. I tried to make him understand the error of his thoughts, but no matter how long I spoke to him he failed to understand. All that he would reply was "My understanding is a higher understanding then yours. My thoughts are greater then yours." Upon this answer I begged him so that he would try to explain his thoughts to me. I begged him to try and implore his "higher thinking." He again went on to insult my intelligence, and he walked away saying that I would not understand his higher thinking. I failed to see how anyone's thoughts could ever be higher or better then another persons thoughts. How is it that anyone could ever think themselves more intelligent or blessed then another if they truly have seen the love of Christ? I rested my thoughts in the knowledge that his opinion is his own, and although I can influence his opinion, I cannot change it. I pray that the Lord will speak to his heart, and help him see the truth before he goes out and puts himself in the field with the other hands of the Lord.

    1. Your brother may not even realize this truth until he is on his mission. It's flawed thinking, to be certain. How blessed you are to have learned this so early. Sometimes it's hard to see people do or think things that you know are flawed, and we can't do anything about it. Agency is something that we fought for in the Pre-mortal existence, but we don't want our loved ones to suffer from poor choices. It's rather ironic.

I am a morning person. Anyone who has been with me at any point of the day will know that I function the highest during the early hours of the morning. It makes it very interesting during early morning seminary because I’m the only morning person in my class. I’m usually very talkative, but it makes it hard to have a good conversation with anyone because they’re all zombies. This is also why I dislike sleeping in. I am the most productive before lunch, and if I sleep in, I can’t make a distinct plan. I’m grateful that I’m a morning person, but it makes having late night parties and events rather hard. I become really loopy, and usually end up embarrassing myself.

I totally feel the same way! I'm some what of a morning person or at least I'm happy in the mornings. Most of the time I'm wide awake, cheerful and positive when my friends aren't even close to that attitude. ;) Now that I think about it, I do tend to get a lot more done in the mornings. :)

It’s cold when sleepy me crawls out of bed, and gropes around for something warm. My fingers find a hoodie. It’s what I wear, smiling, falling asleep in the car, listening to the seminary teacher, hugging my friends after and wishing them good days, and collapsing back into my bed - just five more minutes, then I can be human for the rest of the day - when I get home. It’s a simple black hoodie, though deliciously soft and wonderfully comfortable. It has a nice hood, a nice crown and sword on the front, and nice lettering. The reason I love and wear it so much, though, is the memories woven through it. I spent time with old friends in this hoodie, and made new friends. I challenged myself in this hoodie. I cried, and I cheered in this hoodie. It kept me warm on the best weeks of my life. You see, this is my Shakespeare Competition hoodie. I wore it last October when I came to Liahona.

  12. So we discovered this interesting fruit imported from Africa that our Smith’s now sells. The fruit has many names: Kiwano melon, Melano, African cucumber, or Horned melon. On the outside it is an orange and yellow color with spikes that aren’t very sharp but some are. The inside of this fruit is filled with seeds covered in what looks like a green slime. The seeds are in the shape of pumpkin seeds but are only about half the size of a pumpkin seed. The green slippery slime that the seed is covered in is the fruit part and is a bright, grass-like green. The flavor is a blend between kiwi, dew melon, and cucumber. This fruit is definitely different from all the fruits I’m used to but it was something new to try.

  13. Sorry this is so long... I won't have this much next time :P

    Part 1

It was a warm September day. We were riding our horses on our friends land out in the country. I was letting my horse (Wazo) graze at the top of a hill, while my dad struggled to get his horse over a marshy area at the bottom. I let the reins loose and relaxed for a little bit as Wazo munches on the grass. The horse at the bottom takes off running and Wazo wants to follow. The next thing I know… We’re taking off down the hill! Full speed. Frantically trying to grasp the reins. I have no control. I scream in terror… just hoping I don’t die. And little did you know… my friend Dylan is with me, riding on the back. He grabs on to my face… puling me back, just trying to stay on. We slowly lean to one side. Further, further, further, then it’s black. I pass out in fear. Something is shaking me. I hear my brother’s voice. “ Trevor! Trevor! Wake up! Wake up!” He screams with tears in his eyes. Slowly I start to regain my vision. Everything is a blur. My head pounding with ache. So confused at just what happened. I hear screaming close by. It’s my friend Dylan. Oh no! Did he get hurt? It sounded pretty bad from the screaming/crying I heard. My brother helps me stand up. So dizzy I can barely stand. My dad looks at Dylan and I… Dylan broke his two front teeth and my head was bleeding. My dad thinks that Dylan broke his teeth on my head and that I was bleeding a little bit. So Dylan gets to ride with an adult and I ride by myself. Super dizzy and out of it. I could barely sit up by myself. We get back to the trailer and head home. Those short 20 minutes seemed like a lifetime. I was in so much pain. Finally we’re home! So since my dad is an orthodontist he takes Dylan down to his office and fixes his teeth. I go inside and lay on the couch and my mom gets a towel to soak up the blood dripping from my head. A couple hours later I had filled up a few towels of blood. It’s about 9:00 PM now, and my parents take me to the ER. I’m throwing up and feel really bad. I get a kat-scan and I have a punctured/fractured skull. So basically my skull is caving in. When I fell, my horse tried to jump over me but kicked me in the head. First they tell us that I will be transported by ambulance to another hospital 2 ½ hours away. A couple minutes later they inform us that I will be getting life flighted. They bring me up to the helicopter, strapped to a stretcher. Everything is pretty vague because I wasn’t fully there. The flight seemed really quick, only about 45 minutes. We get to the hospital close to 12:00 AM, and I’m told I can’t eat anything because I might be getting surgery soon. I’m starving, and haven’t eaten anything for a long time.

  14. Part 2

The neurosurgeon said I didn’t need to have surgery unless we want to do it for cosmetic reasons. My family prayed about this and we got the answer that I should have surgery. I give my family hugs. I’m crying because I’m scared. I’ve never had surgery before. So I go into the surgery room… it’s white and sterile, tools laying beside me, and tubes all over the place. A woman tells me that she is going to put something over my mouth and nose. “It will smell a little funny”, she says. I know what this is… the anastasia. Will I wake up? I know that it’s like one in a million that I wouldn’t wake up. But that could be me! She places the mask over my nose and mouth. First thing I think is: This does smell really weird. My eyes start to close, vision getting blurry, and the last thing I see is someone walks through a door straight in front of me. Then I’m out. I wake up a day or two later. I instantly feel like I’m falling. I scream at the top of my lungs! I’m dazed. My head feels like it will explode any moment now. I’m crying in the pain. Once I calm down I look at my surroundings. I’m in a big room with furniture, a bathroom, and my own window to see outside. I’m in the NICU! This is where all the cancer patients go. I learn that my skull was pushing on my brain. If I didn’t go into surgery when I did they would have had to do an emergency one and they didn’t know if I would have made it. My brain was bruised and almost bleeding. They didn’t know if I would have permanent damage or if I would ever be the same. The blood that was dripping from my head wasn’t blood… it was spinal fluid. I get put on so many medications, one for meningitis because if anything got into my spinal cord I could die. And now I’m sick, very sick. I’m throwing up constantly and I can’t eat much. The doctors put me on more medication, which doesn’t help. They do scans on my stomach to see if I hurt it when I fell. They don’t see anything. So one day my dad went and got yogurt and it helped! I was feeling a lot better the next day. I finally get to go out of my room. I get pushed in a wheel chair, and soon I start walking very slowly. I also have to bring this thing with me everywhere. It has bags and tubes that are connected to me. When I go outside I see the cancer patients and I realize I don’t have it that bad. I’m grateful. So I’m in the hospital for about a week, and I finally get to go home. The day of my departure they have to take out all the IV’s and tubes. There was this one tube in my arm that went to my heart. Oh, when they had to pull that out I was so scared. It actually wasn’t that bad. It felt weirder than anything. I’m also told that I can’t run for 3 months, and I can’t do anything that could strain my body in any way. Just take it easy. This was really hard for me because I love to run and be active! But I do what they say. I also have this long scar on my head now where hair will never grow again. I don’t have any damage and I’m back to my old self. I got a blessing when I was in the hospital. I’m very grateful for that. I’m also very grateful that we prayed about my surgery and got the answer that I needed the surgery. I am very blessed!

  19. I am way sorry at the length of this story, I just got writing and I couldn't take any of it out!! Here goes...

The Life of a Piece of Paper.
A blank perfect piece of paper. Pristine, perfect paper placed precisely on top of a pile on a desk in a classroom. It was happy, it enjoyed it's perfection. It looked down at itself. It was blank and white. It smiled and felt content.
A bell rang. Little figures bustled into the room. The piece awoke from it's peaceful slumber by ten slim attackers. It snatched the paper up and moved it. The paper was worried. What had happened? Then it all stopped. It smiled. Out of nowhere, a big black tip came and swiped across the page. It gasped. Something was marking it! Pink and black tips and slender attackers relentless ruined the poor page. It wanted to cry, (but no moisture touched the page because pages can't cry.) The it all stopped. It was whisked away into a notebook and was surrounded by darkness. It felt lonely and dark and depressed. It dared to look at itself. Black and smudges and marks. It felt ruined. It hated the way it looked.
An afternoon later (What seemed like years to the poor little page), it was released, yet the sadness still remained. The slim fighters snatched it again and the figure who mared the paper took it to another tall figure with a soft voice. It said, "What a pretty picture!" What? The page wondered. Then it looked down at itself again.
A pretty girl in a bright yellow dress holding a light blue umbrella, skipping in the rain. It looked again, and slowly, it smiled again. It somehow felt content.

My dad and ALL my brothers are gone to a ward Father and Son's camp out. That just leaves me and my mom at home. What should we do? Well, we're going to do what moms and daughters do best. So we hop into the car, drive over to Macy's (the food store one), buy some Kongs (of course I get a large chocolate), and grab a big box of Chicken n' a Biscuit crackers. On our way home my mom lets me drive because I am fifteen and am preparing to get my permit. After driving around for a bit, we go back home, pop in Sense and Sensibility (the one with Emma Thompson), and finish our treats. Chocolate ice cream, chicken flavored crackers, and Jane Austen- yep, that's what we do best.

So our monitor broke a couple of days ago, so we have been using my sisters computer to do all of our computer stuff on. It is a little weird and I’m still trying to figure it all out. This morning we were trying to watch a video, but the speaker decided to stop working. More problems!:). 22. Yesterday in church, our final lesson of the day was taught by the Bishop, and he taught about grace. His message was sourced partially from one of Brad Wilcox's talks, in which Bro. Wilcox drew a vertical line on a chalkboard, and asked a student to mark the place where she becomes eligible for grace. The answer is anywhere and everywhere. Grace is always waiting for us. Some of us, me, for example, feel the need to do everything ourselves even when we could ask for help. But our Father in Heaven and our Savior want to help us, they are waiting for us to ask.
As I listened to what the Bishop was saying, a vivid image came into my mind of a person climbing a mountain. That's what life is, isn't it? The person worked hard, climbing the mountain, and in their mind, there was a certain point at which a hand would reach down for them to help them up to the top, after they'd done enough work for themselves. But the truth that the person didn't see was that there was someone right beside them who wanted to help them, who was just waiting until they asked for His assistance.

We have been put in this life for a reason, to understand and familiarize ourselves with God's small and simple voice. We are meant to ask for help because the only way to progress is to go beyond what we are capable of doing, thus needing us to ask for the assistance of another more stronger than ourselves.

  23. Dear Future Me,

Today was a good day, in case you can't remember. You started off the day a little grumpy but you were tired, so its okay. You went to seminary. You were late again because Don Carlos (your car) took forever to defrost the windshield. I'm not sure I can remember what we learned... Don't judge me too harshly. You then went swimming. The pool water was freezing today but you did it anyway. Good job! When you got home you finally cleaned out your car. It was MESSY! Part of that was you spent the whole weekend in your car or at recital rehearsals or the actual show. I'll cut us some slack. The rest of it was kind of boring so I'll skip to English class. It was one of those days where we laugh too hard at a class. Do you remember the days where you used to hate school? That was awful. Liahona is the best. Dad is home from Dubai. That's amazing. We are having dinner. I'll leave it there. How's the future? Did we age well?

    Lots of love,

  24. OK, our house is not the normal size of any house. We built it last year and it was in the 2015 parade of homes. It is our dream home. And one thing that is uniqur to our home are the passages. Secret hideaways on every floor. From the play houses is under the stairs to the secret bookcase doorways.
Well, there are a lot of fun contributions to our home. And on this one day we all got together in the pit. Then, the deathly game started:
Sardines. I hid first on the shelf in the closet. It was difficult for the others to hide with me. Again, over and over we'd run around and try to find the other kids and where they hid. This one particular round, I finally found my brother simply under sweaty blanket... So, I had under the sink instead. Anyway, on my last turn I decided to multitask. I got a book and completely squished into a bedroom cupboard. Well, eventually they'll give up on me. Except for my dad and the sweaty blanket brother. We had such a fun time being together as a family. Woo

I wake up as the sun rises, shining through the large, sliding glass doors directly across from the squishy, forest green, leather couch that is my bed. Out the doors I see Mt. Timpanogos standing tall and brilliant in all its purple glory. Provo stretches out beneath me in the valley, from cute little brick houses to the stadium of fire. As I sit up on my couch, a smell reaches me, a familiar scent. Blended with the smell of old leather, fresh flowers, and the smell of 8 children playing long ago while their mother plays on the piano, comes a smell of a delicious breakfast. I walk into the floral walled kitchen to find a kindly old woman laying out a plate filled with heart shaped waffles topped with berries and maple syrup, accompanied by a tall glass of orange juice. I've always loved sleepovers with Grandma.

I love to reading It's a way to escape the troubles of human life and become absorbed in someone elses world. Reading is my go-to thing. She put the little dogs in her car first then went out back to get the big dog. She accidently left her one and only set of keys on the front seat. While she was gone the little dogs locked her doors. Those scoundrels! Just as she was entering full melt down mode over the imaginary life threatening situation, her sister and brother-in-law drove up from Logan. Rarely did they sit still, unless they happened to be conspiring about something. On this particular day, they walked together in the backyard of their house, barefoot and oblivious to the sharp rocks and thorns that relentlessly pierced their feet. They spotted a few roughly 7 by 4 ft slabs of wood which casually sat around. Naturally, they determined to build an amazing bike ramp. They work for many days, this project being the reason they woke up in the morning. They combined their small muscles and bright ideas and the ramp was a success... well, almost. It was of decent craftsmanship for young children as far as it made it, but sadly, Catherine tripped on the boards one day and badly sprained her arm, delaying any further work for a time.

We got in the cage, and surprising I wasn’t scared because I was scared that the sharks would smell my fear. My ring finger immediately started swelling up and turning purple, but I thought nothing of it and continued with the last hour and a half or so of practice. I couldn't move my finger very much because it got so swollen, and the next day I went to an Orthopedist. Turns out, I either sprained or fractured it, but the way to treat it was the same. I used medical tape to tape my ring finger to my middle finger. It should have healed in 2 weeks if it was a sprain, but it would be extended to a month if i still played with my hand. I couldn't leave Basketball! I was one of the starting players, and the tallest on the team! I played on it anyway. Well, it's been a month, and my finger still hurts pretty bad, so we're thinking it's a fracture. It took a while to get used to seemingly having 4 fingers on one hand, but now it's going to be weird to have 5 again!

I set a goal when I first started climbing; I wanted to be consistently climbing in the V5-V6 range. While I'm not quite there yet, I am only one move from sending (A climber's word for completing) my first V5. 6 months ago I was struggling to climb V1 and V2 routes, so seeing this improvement is really encouraging and motivates me to work harder. I know I'm not quite climbing at that level, but I hope to be soon.

  65. Aghhh I need a car!! I've had my drivers license for over a year, but have been driving my mother's van around. I didn't mind it at first cause I had freedom! I could drive! But now it's just awkward and I can't help but be embarrassed when I go to pick up my friends from school in a big family van..Lol

  67. A tradition that we have always had as a family is that once a week our parents will take one of the kids on a “date” it’s not a real date but we go and do something fun with each other. It is a chance that we have to do something with our parents and just talk with them and have a good time.

  68. My Nana is moving from Oklahoma to the town I live in, Pearland Texas. I am so excited! She is a very crafty person and she will be here just in time for the summer. I have a list of things I want to do with her probably 5 pages long, and I'm still coming up with more ideas. When she settles in I want to see if I can part time live there because I love and have missed her so much.
