Sister Jackson's Slice:
Ye shall have a song, as in the night when a holy solemnity is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goeth with a pipe to come into the mountain of the Lord, to the mighty One of Israel.A song in this heart and gladness of heart are things I strive to cultivate on a daily basis, but I never considered to what degree and quality I am promised them. I shall have them because God sees me and he knows my heart. He knows what I need to grow and become the magnificent person I was born to be.
Isaiah 30:29
This month I want to focus on remembering this promise, letting it comfort me when times are difficult, and seeing how my song and gladness can make a difference each day.

ReplyDeleteToday in Testimony Meeting, I felt a prompting, and I acted upon that prompting by getting up before the pulpit and saying that which my conscience was pounding into my chest. I must say, I am sufficed and grateful to have done so, for afterwards a man went up and spoke even about that which I bore, saying with tears in his eyes how grateful he was for not only the desire that the youth of this age have in keeping the commandments, but also for their pursual in learning about their heritage (that being the scriptures):
"The Children of Israel were blessed abundantly with a promised land, prosperity, wealth, and all the comforts of this world. For years God was with them, and did lead them to victory after victory against their enemies. But despite all this, they still turned from God, began worshiping and sacrificing to idols, and did forget their God and all he had done for them.
I hope that despite all I have been blessed with, I will still stand true to my God. I hope when God needs me the most I won't dwell on what I have been given insomuch my ability to listen to His heart-felt need becomes faulted. I hope that I will not only be one of the many who are called, but also a partaker of one of those few who are chosen. I know God trusts us so much that he blesses us bountifully because of the faith he holds for each of us, let us not forget him when he stands alone and forgotten in this world, but let us give back to him by acting upon His soft voice."
You have power to change lives, all you must do is walk in faith and act on a simple prompting. I would like to challenge you, even if you read this message after church, to bear your testimony the next time you feel a burning sensation in your bosom to stand up for your beliefs. I challenge you to walk those steps to the pulpit, and to let the spirit loosen your tongue so that you may be found effective to all those listening. Be the means of the answer someone is praying for, show God he can place trust in you to say what needs to be said. I promise you, if you do so, the joy you will feel shall overcome all other emotions, and the spirit will testify with assurance to you that your God has a love for you impalpable to all else found in life.
(Please forgive the length. I had a discussion with myself as to if I should include my testimony or not, and after much contemplation, I decided to do as I did because I felt it to be the better choice, despite the consequences that may arise from doing so.)
DeleteWow Caleb that was beautiful. I agree with you, we need to give back to our Heavenly Father, he has done SO much for us!
DeleteCaleb, don't worry about it. That was amazing. We do need more people who will stand up for the right in these days. I love that last paragraph best. It is so powerful.

DeleteThank you for sharing your testimony with us. I had a similar experience of the Holy Ghost prompting me to get up and bear my testimony. It's not always the easiest of things to do but afterwards, the Spirit assured me it was the right thing to do. I agree, we need to give back to Heavenly Father, even if we follow the simple promptings we get from him.
Thank again for sharing your inspiring message.
Elise, Julie, Isabelle. . .thank you for the messages you have sent in reply of my slice, they are both inspiring and uplifting to me.
DeleteMOMENT OF TRUTH!
ReplyDeleteLAST NIGHT, (long after the competition,) my voice teacher texted my mom to tell her that she didn’t know if I had placed yet, but she knew I had scored high. She said that she would let us know when she found out. So I went to bed with a wondering mind, thinking that I probably hadn’t placed.
NEXT MORNING: I remembered the competition, got out of bed, and went over to where my mom had put her phone. This is what I read: “Well I got the email later last night and Elise came in 3rd place!!! Yea I’m so proud of her!!” THIRD PLACE PEOPLE!!! I gave a girly squeal, (because obviously, I am a girl, don’t judge,) and I rushed to tell my dad (because I didn’t know where mom was,) and he was so happy for me! I felt all glowing and happy and excited at the same time! Then I went to find my mom and she was super happy too! I’m so thankful to my Father in Heaven for giving me this talent of singing, and I am also thankful that he helped my at my competition. I am truly blessed.
Congratulations!!! You probably did amazing!
DeleteYay!! I'm so happy for you! I know that exact feeling! I was doing some try-outs for an honor choir. I was really positive, but I also had a low belief that I would get in. A month later, I received a call from my choir teacher that I was going to All-State Honor Choir, and I practically cried from excitement!
DeleteThat is awesome! You're fantastical! Great job! Thanks for sharing. :)
DeleteCaleb Alton, DE, P4
DeleteSee, the commendable thing here is that you not only did well in your competition, but you also properly thanked that person who provided the means whereby you could win. Many people say they won something 'by their own hand', but you have recognized the real hand in your life, and have thanked Him because of it.
Fast Sunday. Blech. Let's go over it:
ReplyDeleteI wake up and avoid the kitchen at all costs. I devour several breath mints so the kids in Sunday School sit by me. I read scriptures, listen to Conference and Hank Smith, ect, ANYTHING to keep my mind off the huge amazing salad sitting out and the big dinner rolls baking... And then it's dinner time and everything tastes like the Celestial Kingdom! Anyway...
Even with all that, fasting had blessed my life. It has assisted me many times. When I really need money and I pay my fast offering, while praying and trusting God, I find a way to earn money. That's just one example. God has blessed me for it and He will bless you when you do it too.
That is so accurate! And I also love and realize the blessing of fasting, thought it is hard. :)
DeleteCaleb A, DE, P4
DeleteLife has a way of asking for so little, but giving back so much. Say a prayer, and your hearts desire can come true; obey the commandments, and you will physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally be stable and happy. It truly is easy to do, 'tis only the matter of if you are willing to do it or not that is the question.
I feel you, Fast Sundays are rough. Even though it's difficult it's such a blessing in our lives!

ReplyDeleteSometimes I just want to live in the mountains in a nice little cabin far away from people. I want to listen to the birds sing, I want to learn about the earth, learn to paint with all the colors of the wind. I want to look into the clear blue sky and smell the sent after it rains. It would be so nice, so simple. I could read away the days, living in other worlds. I could plant a garden, dance and sing. I could sit around a warm orange fire on a cool autumn night, look into the starry sky and get lost in the small pinpoints of light. But then I remember all the people I know, all the things I love down here in civilization, and most importantly, I remember that God can't use me to help people if I hide myself away on a mountain. So I smile and get to work.
I wish I could go live alone in the mountains as well haha
DeleteYass, KyAnne! You capture my memories form past and moments in living right now. You worded ale erythema perfectly and brought things to my mind; one of which being the scent of rain I tasted this morning and when we went star gazing on New Years. Thanks KyAnne!
DeleteThat would be amazing. Where can I sign up? Just kidding that would be bad because if you gave me that, no one would probably see me. Ever. I liked what you said about you can't serve when you hide in the mountains.

DeleteThose things you have a desire to do, makes me wonder if when this life is over, and this civilization ended, if you shall be able to do so in the next life, what with the eternities being your time to do as you wish. . .
Im so happy that it is finally March! I absolutely hate winter and I hate the cold. Spring is my favorite season because blossoms are on the trees, and flowers are starting to appear, and birds are showing up again. I love the weather because its usually perfect. DeleteSpring is the renewal, start, or end of life: the renewal of the trees and their leaves, the start of a cardinal's song, and the end of the life of Winter. Luckily we still have memories to ponder its passing, and hopes for its coming. But for the present, it is gone, and it is well with us for Spring is a glorious substitute.
I highly agree, Rachel, there are so many good things as well as surprises that await in the spring.:) yess

ReplyDeleteThere is always complaint and debate on the 'burden' of fasting.
Implanted in my heart, a couple years back, I learned fasting is disciplining yourself, humbling yourself, and loving others. Yes, it sounds so cliché but hear me when I say if you don't have a reason to fast then don't. Of course you will always find a reason to fast and I've learned that you can always find someone else in your life that needs helpful reassurance, our love, and even we ourselves need Christ's love and healing powers of charity.
Also with tithing we find a peace and serenity that comes from the Holy Ghost. By giving back through our earnings it shows God that we respect and love him. But especially we must do it with a light heartedness and happiness in our eyes. Not a sad or regretfulness. •It's not only about the goal we must reach but how we take the journey•
Well I kind of got out of order and everything is a little out of place but boiling down to the main point is enduring to the end with faith in God and knowledge that if you keep his commandments he will be with you and you will have eternal life.
Caleb A, DE, P4
DeleteAh, many times when the complaints of those not strong enough have tired my mother's ears during our time of fasting, she always says: "if you're not fasting with your heart, then you're just starving your stomach." Endurance is an attribute that is necessary if we are to succeed in life, and sometimes by starting out with the small things, like teaching ourselves how to fast properly and effectively, can we eventually gain that trait that will assist us as we walk home.

ReplyDeleteYesterday my sister Sarah made the righteous decision to be baptized by immersion. Seeing my little girly so excited and happy was infectious. She is usually sassy and unpleasant to be around, but since she’s been baptized I’ve noticed her new gift of having the Holy Ghost ever present has affected her viewpoint on happiness. She’s been thinking more of others, and even though I know it didn’t happen overnight, I think it’s miraculous how much the influence of the Holy Ghost can change someone.

DeleteThe Holy Ghost is a companion as well as a deliverer of joy. It is wonderful to see the difference between the first time someone native to this island walks through our doors, and then see the first step they take as they walk out of the font. They have hope where it never was, peace where they had always sought, and that joy that won't leave them except by choice. It just motivates me to spread that light even more so that others can know of the happiness that is felt from it.

DeleteThat is so exciting, Rebekah! It's amazing to see how the Holy Ghost can change someone's life. The Holy Ghost doesn't necessarily change who they are, as a person but it helps them to be a better person. The Holy Ghost is a wonderful companion and brings, like Caleb said, hope and peace to those who have received it. Tell your sister, "Congrats" for us! So excited for her!! :)
Seeing others come to the Light of the Gospel makes me feel empowered to do more good, and come closer to Christ. Thank you for your comments Caleb and Isabelle! I'll let her know Isabelle.

ReplyDeleteThe scriptures are amazing. I'm so glad that I have the scriptures and the gospel in my life. They help guide us and dive us comfort in hard times. There are many awesome scriptures out there and I strive to find them. My favorite scripture is 2nd Timothy 2:3 "Therefore endure hardness as a good soldier of Jesus Christ."
I love the scriptures too! My favorite is Helaman 5:12 "And now my sons remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall." When reflecting on this scripture mastery, I feel a sense of comfort, for the devil shall have NO POWER over me if I am built upon Christ and the gospel.

One thing that my leaders have emphasized recently is, if you want to speak to the Lord you pray but if you want him to speak to you, you read the scriptures. :) Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteHymns are a great way to feel the spirit. It’s easy to just sing the words and not know what you’re saying. And then when you just say the words you can’t help sing but sing the tune in your head. But hymns are powerful regardless. Today in Sacrament meeting we sang the Israel Israel God is Calling. I was so filled with the Spirit that I was singing it with more gusto than I had ever before. By the last line in the 4th verse when it says, “Come to Zion, come to Zion! Zion’s walls shall ring with praise. Come to Zion, come to Zion! Zion’s walls shall ring with praise,” my heart was so full and in my head I was saying, “I want to go to Zion!!” I cannot wait for the day when we will live in that beautiful city, to be of one heart and of one mind, and to live with our Savior, Redeemer, and King here on the earth.
Caleb A, DE, P4
DeleteYes, Hymns are a great way to feel the spirit, and are not just meant to arouse your faculties in waking yourself up during the session by concentrating on singing the text in front of you. One song that has helped me on countless occasions, even if it be not a hymn, is 'I'm Trying to be Like Jesus". The words and phrases are meant to uplift you in a manner where strength becomes your ally, and fear for men dissipates into the air. In your case, you weren't singing about Zion, you were singing your desire to be in Zion. Hymns are a blessing, and shall be used to provide the fervor we need when all else fails.

ReplyDeleteFor church today my family and I were able to meet up with the two sister missionaries that were the first to serve in our ward. It was so fun to catch them up on everything that has tapped in our ward and family. But this time I did have a translator so everything was ok. But then after church I was sick (yet again) and so I went to be. Only to be woken up by a Missionary in my room. Needless to say it was a bit weird. They were invited over though so it's all good. I taught them about dinosaurs and how they evolved into birds and stuff so that's cool. I also noticed how little face to face talking I do and how awkward it can be.

Yeah, well I got that feeling except I hadn't done anything and I was sitting in sacrament meeting. The second counselor was conducting sacrament meeting this week, so he started testimony meeting off with a wonderful and inspiring message. Soon after I thought, "what if I got up there?" and that's where it all started. My heart started beating liked I'd just ran a race and I was struggling for breath with in a few minutes. Several people got up and I was searching for the courage to just get up there. Finally I found my opportunity and before I knew it I was walking up to the podium. It seemed like the longest walk of my life. ;) I got up there and at first I didn't know what to say, I decided to share a scripture and expounded upon that. My testimony wasn't some elaborate thing, I just testifying of the simple truth. As I looked among the members of my ward, I realized how much I love all of these people and that it wasn't scary at all because they loved me as well. Afterwards is always slightly awkward because everyone is watching you walk back to your seat. . . Once I sat down, I knew that I accomplished what the spirit needed me to do. ReplyDeleteWe recently got a new piano - one with keys in tune, and a pedal that works. C# and G don’t stick, either. Hallelujah!
This evening, I sat down to play, going from hymns to ‘You Raise Me Up’ and ‘The Prayer’. They were challenging, but I could play the top hand credibly after a few tries. After making sure the little boys were settled for the night, Mom came in. She sat beside me, and we played together, then I went to get a drink of water. She played a lot when she was younger, and ended up playing for several hours tonight. When Dad came out, together, - him on the bottom hand, her on the top - they wove multiple melodies. I love the power of beautiful, calm music. It brings contentment into a room.

My mom got a really bad migraine last night and was not able to come to church today and my dad is the second councilor and he was conducting today so I was in charge of keeping the kids happy and quiet. Ps, kids are crazy, I don't know how my mom does it every week! After all three hours were over I got my fast offerings companion and did a route. Then I was able to have an interview with my bishop and guess what? I'm getting my patriarchal blessing! My patriarchal blessing is scheduled for easter Sunday! I am so excited! Please share some experiences you've had with your patriarchal blessings in the comments below if you'd like!
I absolutely adore my patriarchal blessing. It is such a comfort to have when I'm feeling down or nervous about something. Bring tissues because even if you think you won't cry, you probably will. Even though you will get a copy later it's cool to look back and see what stood out to you in the moment. Thanks for sharing!
DeleteThis month in church, the theme is the Atonement. In Sunday School, my teacher divided us all into groups of four or so and gave us each a talk on the Savior and His Atonement, which we were to read and then summarize. The talk which my group received was "None Were With Him" by Jeffery R. Holland. Obviously it was going to be great, since it was Elder Holland, but I was still surprised. The talk was a very good read. It detailed all of the Savior's suffering preceding His crucifixion, and stated at the end that because of His Atonement, we will never have to feel so utterly alone as He was in those final hours. Our Heavenly Father and our Savior will never leave us, no matter what.

I love the song "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing". I really enjoy listening to the BYU Vocal Point version, on the way to church. I love the line that goes "Turn my heart to sing my praise" because even if we all have days where we aren't in a good mood or we are unhappy we can still ask God to help us be more like him. I'm grateful for the spirit hymns and other good happy music bring into my life. When I'm feeling down I know I can turn good music on and feel the spirit.
ReplyDeleteI love that song. It's so comforting and uplifting. It was my grandma's favorite song. I sang it for her birthday when she was in the hospital and also at her funeral. I can really feel the spirit when I listen to that song.
DeleteI have a really good friend who is vegan! And I never realized what being a vegan really meant. I thought it was just not eating dairy and meats! I was so wrong, being Vegan is so much more. My friend has gotten rid of everything that was leather. She doesn't eat certain things or buy certain items because that item leads to animal abuse and or torture! I don't agree with everything but I definitely have been given a new perspective! She's tried more than once to turn me into a vegan. I don't think I could give up dairy but I could see myself becoming vegetarian :)

ReplyDeleteI love fast Sunday because of fast and testimony meeting, though the fasting part can sometimes be a difficult thing to endure. But today’s fast and testimony meeting was especially great, in my opinion, because of what happened. My family and I were sitting in our little bench listening to the introduction, then watching as people started walking up, sitting and waiting for their turn to share their testimony, as I noticed something. The majority of the people that went up to share were the young children. Every now and then an individual with more years on them would make their way up to the pulpit but the majority was children. I tried to figure out this little puzzle to myself as I was sitting there. Then my thoughts led me to think that perhaps it’s because of how much faith they have. Like, how we’re told there is more purity in children and babies because they haven’t had as much opportunity to sin and just recently passed through the veil. Then I thought about how the elderly have gone through so much already and that has reminded them the reason why we’re here so then they regain that innocence of a child before returning to the Father in Heaven. I admired the faith and the testimonies that everyone shared and maybe someday this puzzle will be solved.
What is the feeling of calm? What enters your mind when you hear that? I think of peace, first of all. Stillness, quiet, an undisturbed existence, comfort. Just letting thoughts freely flow through your brain without many exciting emotions or physical disturbances. I actually highly enjoy writing on this topic. My thoughts are calm at this moment. It's funny how the topic you write on can affect you so much. I have officially decided that I like calm.

DeleteThe brain is amazing. It's so complex and smart, it's astonishing. Earlier (Like 2 seconds ago when I was thinking about what to write) I was looking at my piano and I thought about how amazing it is to be able to remember so many things. The brain is so weird and cool. I've been playing piano for as long as I can remember and now I can just sit down and play it. I don't have to look at the keys and I can sing whilst playing and think about chords for another instrument. Or if I play a song I haven't played in months and months I still know every note. Our brains are really smart.

ReplyDeleteMath disgusts me. Well, thats a bit exaggerated. But I certainly don’t enjoy that part of my day. Don’t mistake this for school though––I love school, always will. But unfortunately, I still to this day forget my multiples. Which slows down my math progression… A LOT. So as you can imagine, doing 30+ problems every day with Saxon Math isn’t fun. But oh well, it’ll be worth it someday right? We can only hope. I am now realizing most of my Slice of Life’s are somewhat negative. DeleteMy brother Dustin is on his mission and hes about to come home and I'm really exited, he has been one of the best roll models a person could ever have. I just cant wait he has had the mos t baptisms in his old area. Here my favorite quote from him "I don't teach the spirit teaches I'm just the messenger".

ReplyDeleteI could talk about moving. I could talk about books. I could talk about feelings and thoughts and questions. Right now though I don’t know what to talk about. My mind comes up with topics, then throws them aside. I feel a restlessness inside me. What do I talk about? I can’t think.
I feel ya. I've had a hard time knowing what to slice about.
DeleteYou talked about something without talking about anything... *mind blown up*

I am sure that this is not a new concept to any of you, but after working on a project so long I have a strong desire to burn it. However, I can’t bring myself to destroy all that work. I am stuck in between these two intense feelings. I feel like I have situational bipolar disorder. Because of this it sits there with me just staring at it.

Deleteha that sounds intense if you wanna do that be sure to make a scanned version of it first before you burn it if it is a paper. And remember explosives are the easiest and most fun way to destroy anything (except for church stuff) have fun 😃

I just love the feeling I get when I sing church Hymns. They fill me with the spirit and are not an unpleasant thing to have running through my head. I also love when the whole class races to look up the next scripture, and the feeling you get when you get there first to read it. Seeing my friends is also a great thing, especially when I talk to one of my est friends about this weeks service project that we have planned.
ReplyDeleteAll of my friends are sick this week Im so confused, I dont even think its flu season what even happened??!!
ReplyDeleteMy computer has issues.
ReplyDeleteIt takes FOREVER to wake up once its in sleep mode.
And the adobe flash thing doesn't always work correctly so telenect doesn't work right.
Whats the point in me having a school computer if school doesn't always work on it?
I know what you mean its so frustrating when computers don't work for home school.
DeleteI love church however I haven't always. I went inactive for a while and while at first it was really fun and swell a couple months i started being extremely unhappy and angry all the time so today in church i was reminded of the feeling the holy ghost brings us when there is truth.
ReplyDeleteThat is so strong and its great that you are going to church again
Deleteonce again my mother at the hospital but this time on November 3rd of 2010. Then born a little sister that we named Sofie. she was adorable. Even though I have bad memory I can remember the first time i held her I was 7 years of age and i was looking at my baby sister when suddenly something white started coming up her throat ahhhhh milk barf but luckily she didn't barf it went back down even though that sounds very disgusting.
ReplyDeleteRecently for a mutual activity we held a "mini MTC". Everyone was called to a country and we were assigned companions and learned about that country. We had ward missionarys teaching different stations were we were able to learn skills that missionaries use on a daily basis. We learned to teach lessons, knock on doors, memorize the first vision scriptures, and much more. It was an incredibly cool activity and we learned so much about missionary work.

My dad works a lot. I know we need our parents to work (or just one of them) so we can live good lives.. but sometimes I wish he could work less and spend more time with us, even if it means we live in a smaller house with crappier food. It'd be worth it to me. I should go to his work more often and pay him visits though!
ReplyDeleteI love shoes! I have these one pair of rainbow platform 6in sneakers that I love to wear. Every time I wear them people are like,
ReplyDelete"WOAH! YOU GOT TALLER!"
Or
"HOW DO YOU WALK IN THOSE THINGS!?!?!?"
Hello everyone how’s it going so todays story is on… my first dance ever. YAY! So when I first turned 14 they were having a super Saturday and I went and I didn’t know how to dance when I was there but I learned how to at that dance and I was scared because I asked my bishop if I could not dance and my bishop said “no you have to dance with someone”. So I had to ask a girl to dance with me and when I was 14 I wasn’t very good at talking so I’m very thankful that all of the girls who I danced with was willing to talk to me.
