Slice of Life: DAY 14

Remember that you are writing a snippet of your life, a slice, not giving us the whole pie, so write well but write with brevity.

After you post your slice, strive to comment on at least three other slices.

How to get entries into the raffle at the end of the challenge:
  1. Post your slice here BY 9 PM (MDT). For each time you post, you get an entry.
  2. Comment on other slices at anytime throughout the challenge. For every five thoughtful comments that you make, you get an entry.
  3. Slice every day for the entire month (31 days), and you will get an entry into a special drawing.

  1. Once morning breaks across the Saturday sky, I'm going to work on the church farm down the way from my house. You know what we will be doing? Picking up rocks. Somehow I think that's going to give me a plethora of things to share with everyone this coming Monday. I could be mistaken, but I'll let you know how it goes. Just ask if I forget.

    1. First of all: Why are you awake at 2:15am?!?!
Second: I lived on a farm for a couple months. You will find some exciting things under those rocks. Good luck. I was temporarily cured of my fear of spiders. Now I am back in the city and am totally terrified of them again. ;)

  2. This morning at my cousin's house was awesome! Me and Alayna, (my cousin,) woke up around 6:45 a.m., snoozed until about 7:15, and then we went upstairs. We made: German pancakes, and homemade fries, and my cousin Lindsay made Spam. It took a few hours, but in the end it was all worth it! It tasted SO good.... :) Anyway, that was my Slice. Until next time! :)

I'M GOING TO A DANCE TONIGHT!! I'm so excited!! This is my first one! I'm kind of freaking out because I look like a moron when I dance. But I don't care! I can box step, and my friend says that's all I need.
For our yw activity this week we are going to the temple... today. So right after the temple we will run home, change, and go to the dance, with wet hair that smells like chlorine. Great.
Oh well, it will be super fun anyway!

That is awesome! Can I give you some advice? Boys don't like to ask girls that are in groups, because it is awkward, and I can relate to that. It is much easier for a boy to ask a girl that is alone. If you take this advice, you will get asked to dance a lot more than if you didn't! I hope you have fun!

That's awesome Hannah, I really hope you have a good time. And don't worry about how you dance, trust me I dance like a psycho maniac. But some how I still manage to get asked. I think its good you dance, because a lot of people don't dance that often at dances. The dances need someone like you to spice it up with your dance moves.

    7. Well, a little late on the reply, but dances are fun for two purposes. One, you get to meet more people than those who are in your immediate ward. Two, it could be a good excuse to talk to and be in a closer proximity to someone who has caught your fancy. Those aren't the only reasons, just the ones that came to my mind first...

Elder Russell M Nelson said, "The question we might ask ourselves is, are we securely tied to God so that our faith shows, or are we actually tied to something else?" When we are tied to something else other than God, and that thing stops working, than you have nothing to hold on to anymore. In Russell M Nelson's talk, he wondered if people who are avid fans of professional athletic sports tied back only to some kind of a bouncing ball. If your whole life is wanting your favorite soccer team in the World Cup to win, and then they lose badly, then those fans have nothing to connect to anymore. If we connect with God, he will never fail us, and we will always have something to hold on to.

Yeah... I can still remember my first grade teacher. But the thing is, if there were such a thing as an erase button, than how different we would be from a computer? What would stop us from erasing our entire history and all the bad things that happened in our lives? Those things that we want to erase are the things that strengthen us and give us experience to prevent those things from happening again.

  11. Following my realization that my slices were becoming increasingly meaningless, I decided to share a small piece of my testimony.
I know that our Father in Heaven loves us and has a plan for each of us. I'm certain that His plan is the best thing for us, and that it will work according to His will if we remain close to Him. I became sure of this in a fireside that I was having trouble with. The fireside was all about how to be missionaries to the nonmembers at our public schools, which of course I could in no way relate to. Finally when it was again stressed how important this is, I cried out in my heart, confused and agitated, asking why I was not able to do that. The answer came to my mind, "That's not where I need you. That's not your role. That's not my plan for you."
Since then, I've held that truth close to my heart, taking comfort in it whenever I can't relate. His plan for me is something else. And I don't know how or why, but it starts here and now, with being a Liahona student instead of going to public school.

  12. This morning and afternoon I dug holes . . . for trees. Trees are wonderful creations of God. I thank Him so much for trees. Peach trees, apple trees, pear trees, cherry trees, nectarine trees, just every tree that is put forth by his hand. God is truly merciful. Life would be dull with no fruit or anything good. God could have given us green mush with all the vitamins, minerals, and hydration we need.
This next paragraph is life without the gift of the food God gave us.
I wake up in the morning, on hard, rocky dirt. I go to the mush pit, pick up some mush, and eat that mush. Yum! Its tasteless. My feet have huge, nasty blisters on them. I go to the water pit, pick up some water, drink that water. It tastes better than the mush. Need I go on?
I love God with all my heart. Not just for the temporal gifts he gives me, but for the eternal.

    1. That is so true Joseph! Trees are truly amazing, especially the ones that you can climb! We have the best climbing tree ever in my front yard. It was planted when I was about four, and I've been able to grow up as I grow up. Trees also give comfort. Sometimes when I am depressed or upset I'll go outside, climb up, sit down on a branch, lean my head against the tree, and listen to the wind rustling it's branches. It really works because I calm down within a few minutes! Trees truly are one of Gods amazing creations!

Today is Pi day. And it’s a special pi day because pi day is usually 3.14 then whatever year. But this year is 2015, which makes pi day 3.14.15. So I think we all deserve extra pi.
To celebrate pi day I made an Oreo pie. I normally don’t like pie, but I’m kind of obsessed with this pie. It’s just an oreo crust, then it has cream cheese and whipped cream and chopped up oreos as a filling. It’s kind of amazing. I make it for every special occasion I can think of.

Background: I am not a doodler. At all. For a long time, I tried to even attempt doodling in my school notebooks. Having the perfectionistic personality that I do, it would never work out. The lines were never straight enough, the hearts were never perfect enough, and the circles were always too oval-ish. Today I broke the mold. I decided to try it. I pulled out a pink and an orange highlighter, a blank sheet of paper, and a semi-hesitant-but-willing attitude. I am sure you have all had some experience with doodling (good or bad) so I will not elaborate on the details of my attempt. All I know is that there is some lessons to be learned from the imperfections of doodling on the back of an essay draft. At first, my attempt at merging polka dots, lines and hearts appeared to be a failure. As I turned the paper around, I saw it as something different, added on, and repeated. Eventually it turned into a complex mesh of colors and shapes. Although I don't know how stunning it was, all in all, it reminded me of life. When we first start out at something, we usually don't do very good at it. We have to change our perspective and realize that it could potentially be amazing. By rotating our perspective from pessimistic to optimistic, we can learn to improve and eventually get really, really, really good at something. I guess what I am trying to say is just keep going. If you need, rotate your paper. Change your perspective. It only takes a few extra scribbles to turn a work in progress to a masterpiece.

Today, Guam and I were almost clipped by an incoming Typhoon. My whole life had been flashed before my eyes. It would have been the first Typhoon I would ever have experienced. We had been all prepped for the incoming danger. We had gotten 6 entire sets of water bottles and a 72 hour survival kit. Not only physically did we need to be prepared, but emotionally as well. Life as we knew it could have disappear. Our 84 square inch, flat-screen TV could have been shredded and our electricity burned out. But it seems when we are the most prepared, God has different plans. The Typhoon completely missed us to the North. Now it is just a boring tropical storm. Such a disappointment...

    My best friend

My best friend's name is Abby. Abigail Jayne Christensen. I met her when I was six, and this is how I met her.
For some reason the first time I actually remember meeting Abby was at the primary program for my new ward. I had just moved in to this ward, and Abby was in my primary class, but, as I said, the first time I remember meeting her was at the primary program. I don't have any memories of the months before that, even though I saw her every week in primary. Anyway, there were all the little metal seats, and each one had a paper on the back with someone's name. They told us to go find the seat with our name and sit down. I found mine on a small row that only had one other seat in it (it was next to the piano). A little girl with thin, dark hair and bangs came and sat next to me. She introduced herself and we were instant friends. We started coming to each others houses, and soon I had the way down to her's memorized. We have been best friends to this day! Abby has tan skin, dark brown hair (she doesn't have bangs now), and startlingly blue eyes. She loves horses and the outdoors and anything that has to do with animals. In the summer we like to pretends we're dryads and we dress in an overly large T-shirt with a rope around the waist and some gym shorts underneath. We play in the river near her house and wonder off in the mountains. And that's how I met Abby.

It was fun though because I haven't actually gotten to hang out with this friend before because we only know each other from seminary; I was super excited that we got to hang out.
On a side note, her brother got his mission call and he's going to Minnesota but get this....He's going to be speaking Spanish! So, he's going to the Mexico MTC! Apparently they speak Spanish in Minnesota! I thought that was super cool.

I did get a huge welt on my knee. But it was worth it. It was loads of fun. We went to dinner at a restaurant on an airport. When it grew dark you could see all the lights. It was really nice and very yummy food. We then went to the dance. I now know what it means to dance the night away because that is exactly what my group and I did. We were exhausted at the end. As I Grew Older Poem by Langston Hughes

It was a long time ago.
I have almost forgotten my dream.
    But it was there then,
    In front of me,
    Bright like a sun—
    My dream.
    And then the wall rose,
    Rose slowly,
    Slowly,
    Between me and my dream.
Rose until it touched the sky—
    The wall.
    Shadow.
    I am black.
I lie down in the shadow.
No longer the light of my dream before me,
    Above me.
    Only the thick wall.
    Only the shadow.
    My hands!
    My dark hands!
    Break through the wall!
    Find my dream!
Help me to shatter this darkness,
    To smash this night,
    To break this shadow
Into a thousand lights of sun,
    Into a thousand whirling dreams
    Of sun!

I love this poem because it reminds me of what are dreams can do to us when we fell scared, mad, happy it can determine our dreams.

My parents are out on a cruise. They left Saturday March 14. I am jealous yet I hope they have fun. The get home on March 31. It is a Mediterranean Cruise. I want to go to Greece so badly, to visit the temples of the Greek gods and such. They are visiting Poseidon's temple while they are there. How I wish I could go! How I wish I might visit there. My parents tell me to marry well and have my husband take me. They say they are doing this to get me motivated. I laugh, shake my head then groan. They will never stop. I love my family but sometimes I wish they would stop. Stop teasing, stop taking things for granted, stop telling me what to do. They are my family though and I love them, so I will smile and move on.

Today was one of those days where I woke up and said to myself, "Julia, why are you getting up? You already can tell this isn't going to be a productive day." I knew that was probably right. But then I thought about it and said to myslel, "You are the one who chooses whether you are productive or not." So I got up and read from the scriptures. The perfect start to my productive day.

It's so great when you have the opportunity to be close to your family. Not just in being around them or doing things with them (now of course those things are great), but when you have a close relationship with them. You can talk to them and tell them the funny things that happened through the day, or the personal stuff that you would tell your best friend. You know that you can trust them and they will keep your secrets. They will always be there for you and along the way laugh at you when you fall down, but in the end they will always help pick you back up again.

    "Komorebi"

I stumbled upon this word entirely by accident. It is a Japanese word, which means "the sunshine filtering through the leaves of a tree." I have absolutely no idea why, but it carried a sort of deeper meaning to me. At first glance, I feel as if I internally scratched at a deeper meaning. It placed an image in my mind, Crushing waves of darkness giving way to the warm light trickling through the cracks of a canopy overhead, as the sun rises in the sky. I thought I would share that. Anyways.

When I first read that you thought there might be a deeper meaning, I immediately thought: Gospel topic to be applied here. Here is a deeper meaning for me.
The sunshine is like Heavenly Father's love for us, and the blessings of the Celestial Kingdom.
The tree could represent the veil, Satan, our trials, or anything else that blocks us from seeing God's love. However, it also makes it more beautiful and precious to us.
      Bam, gospel topic applied.

The slice I posted on today, to me, felt not good enough. I like to be advanced proficient, and I am trying again, cramming in on the few days I didn't reply, as well as the two days that I feel were not good enough slices. Here is my real slice:
    Today was filled with dancing.
    I dreamed of dancing
I woke up with dancing in my mind
    I danced at a rehearsal
I danced on the way home
    I danced as I ate pi(e)
    I danced as I napped
I danced as I got in the car
I danced at a dance workshop
    I was "dancing through life
    skimming the surface
    gliding where turf is smooth"1
I danced back to my bed
    I again dreamed of dancing.

  40. A while ago I and my friends hiked Grandfather Mountain. It was a beautiful mountain with its ridge nestled in cloud like mist. We hiked up the face all day; occasionally filtering water from the small streams running off its face. The view from the ridge was breathtaking. The mist would disperse to give a gorgeous view and then reform in place. The mist made our way treacherous. At one point the path was a mere foot wide, with cliffs on each side. Being on mountains touches me deeply and is something I love. Up on a quiet ridge lacks the noise and distraction that life throws our way. The savior fasted forty days in the wilderness. I believe he did it there due to the quiet peace that can be felt. He did this to prepare himself for his greatest challenge. I believe that if we find life challenging, we might as well do likewise and seek the peace and quiet that can only be felt in nature.

We went to Yellowstone last fall, we saw a whole bunch of gyser (including old faithful) we saw some hot springs and a LOT animals. We saw some deer, mountain goats (I think that's what they were called) and we saw a LOT of Buffalo! I was kind of disappointed that we didn't run into any b ears. Maybe next time. Another cool thing we saw was boiling mud! I had an awesome time at Yellowstone!

Today was ok, for practice we just scrimmaged. One of my teammates checked my finger and now its sprained. Its really rough doing anything with my right hand because I can't bend my finger. Practice was captains practice so we got to take it pretty easy, which was fantastic!

Haha heres my late valentines day post about the picture of the lonely flower Sister Jackson took :)

The boy was so excited to give his girlfriend the ring. He had been waiting for so long to give it to her. He nervously walk to campus where he they had planned to meet. So he walked down the steps shaking. He had been waiting all day for this moment. He couldn't screw it up. When he arrived at the bottom of the staircase, he glanced around the corner to see his girlfriend hugging someone else, while holding a bouquet of flowers. Devastated, he set down the flowers and left. "I can't wait to see him!" the girl said hugging her cousin. Her cousin knew she had a big test so he brought her flowers to make her day. After her cousin left, she sat on a bench and waited for her boyfriend. But he never came.

I hate it when people tell me that is not a word. Bestest is the most wordy of the words that I ever did see. Seriously just makes me plain happy. The only other words that can make me happier are dang flabbit and anything hole. Like Ear Hole, Face Hole, Grass Hole and so on.

Some of my favorite scriptures are
Mark 9:24, “And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” So often it is easier to feel overwhelmed in our situation and like we are inadequate to fulfil our mission here on earth. But not only does the Lord understand that He also loves us enough to help us. I am grateful for His understanding of our weakness and His willingness to give us the aid we seek.
Doctrine and Covenants 19:23, “Learn of me, and listen to my words; walk in the meekness of my Spirit, and you shall have peace in me.” This scripture is so amazing! I first took a good look at it when I was listening to a talk by Hank Smith (I love him!). It shows us the best way to live our lives so we have peace. We learn about our Savior, we learn to listen to His spirit, we follow the direction we receive even without understanding, and then we will be filled with His peace.
Alma 36:3, “And now, O my son Helaman, behold thou art in thy youth, and therefore, I beseech of thee that thou wilt hear my words and learn of me; for I do know that whosoever shall put their trust in God shall be supported in their trials, and their troubles, and their afflictions, and shall be lifted up at the last day.” This is one of those scriptures where you can substitute your name in for the name in the verse, so that it is a more personal scripture. I think this scripture is a comfort to me and it can be for others too. We need to put our trust in God and when we do so, no matter the trials or troubles we face, we can overcome and we can be supported by our Heavenly Father and our Savior.
My thought is this: there is power in the scriptures. Taking a verse you like and breaking it down and actually thinking about why we like them, we can be blessed as the spirt impresses us with thoughts and insight that can be a comfort and a guide for our future.

  47. When me and my scout troop go on a camp out we play capture the flag at night. First, we spit into two groups. Next, we hide the flag, the most important part of capture the flag. Then we start. Why we do it at night? It makes it so you can hid easier and it makes it much more fun. This is my favorite part of the campout.

  50. Yesterday my father and I went to the doctor. My mother had wanted me to get my blood drawn, but we had forgotten about it. We were at the doctors office (because my rib is poking out farther than it should) and I brought up to the doctor that I had really bad restless-leg syndrome at night. He told me that usually was caused by an iron deficiency or something wrong with my thyroid. He left the room and then came back with a needle in his hand. I asked him what he was doing and he told me he needed to know if I had an Iron Deficiency or not. So I had my blood drawn twice (because they had me come back and do it again a few minutes later).

Running. I went on a 4 mile run the other day up the Provo Canyon. It was a hard run, but worth it I'm sure. Running has never really been that fun for me but it's almost therapeutic if done somewhere pretty. I prefer the beach, but now I'm stuck in Utah. Which is ok, just different scenery. All in all running is a pretty cool thing because it can make you feel much better throughout a daily life.

This morning I went on a walk with my best friend. It was below freezing outside so our hands and cheeks got red quickly. Every so often we would jog a few paces to get our blood pumping. We walked along a gravel ditch bank that was covered in frost. The tiny ice crystals that engulfed the leaves and rocks around us made us feel like we were walking in a frozen fairytale. As we were walking we found a puddle of water that had frozen over on top. The ice was frozen in different designs because of the mud that was intertwined in it. We stood for a moment and listened to the bone chilling crackle the ice made when we stepped on it before continuing on down our fairytale.

  53. I do online seminary and since school is going to be over soon we have to take a big test at the end of the year and I'm a little nerves for it. My teacher just gave my brother and I a sheet to study for it, so that will help a lot. Every Thursday we have an online class that is live and I like having my brother there because it's nicer. Next year he will be on his mission to California and I'm going to be by my self, but I'm happy I got this one year with him.

  55. My sister's cat got pregnant. She had the babies too early due to some disease that the vet believes the father had. The kittens were too premature to be saved and the mother knew this, so she tried to kill them. But we refused to believe they were a lost cause so for three nights my sister, my mum, and I all stayed up feeding the kittens every 30 minutes or hour i think. But our efforts still weren't enough. They all died, one by one. It was so incredibly sad.

Ballroom dance is my passion. It lets me forget about the world; be free in a way. In my opinion ‘connection’ is one of the most important things in ballroom dance. “connection’ is where you and your partner change your body weight into a force and pust it in to the other patners hands. It allows you to communicate in a way and you don’t have to think, it just happens.
