  1. Slice of life March 9
Jocelyn Crofts DE Sister. Jackson's english class.
At night I sit in the dimmest of lights and I watch a show that gives me quite a fright and a wonderful delight.
I snuggle close to my friend alone in her room and we giggle and laugh at the things we hear and I think to myself, "what an amazing year." My friend is now asleep, snoring safe and sound, the tv is turned off leaving the house engulfed in silence and I stare blankly at the ceiling with my thoughts to comfort me.
I look at my partner who seem so Peaceful with her head resting heavily on my shoulder, so I Quickly and quietly lifted her head taking careful notice of her light auburn hair as it swayed back and forth. I carefully place her head on her pillow and I patiently wait for her to quit stirring in her sleep. I steadily lifted the upper half of my body from the slouched form I was before and I gradually got out of her bed. When I had finally achieved my goal of getting out of her bed I carefully walked over to my over night sack and I untied the knot to find my clothing all ready to go, so I slipped on a white
t-shirt, a pair of dark cargo pants, a light blue hoodie, and a pair of dark brown boots and I made my escape to the front door. When I had finally made it out of Sabrinas', my friends, house I quickly made my assent up the mountain from the large cabin house that belonged to Sabrinas' parents. After I had walked a good distance of about a quarter mile I found a rather wide clearing of grass, so I went towards the middle and when I had reached, what I thought was the closest thing to being in the middle of an other wise very crooked circle. I took off my hoodie and I placed it on the grass and I gazed up at the milky way with all the wonder and excitement of any ten year old. The stares were always my happy place, I enjoyed the way they twinkled and the way they would shined from miles a way. I enjoyed the stars company because they never asked anything of me, except that I let them shine. I loved the stars because their purpose seemed so simple, they would keep their light glowing for the benefit of the star gazers of the world like me. I yawned a cloud of dreamy white mist and I felt the gentle coolness of the calm night summer breeze on my skin, as if the air was meaning to remind me that I wasn't alone. I watched the unkempt and over grown grass sway around me slightly and when I held really still and stayed as quiet as I could stay, I swear I could hear the quiet nature of the fully awake forest coming from within the walls of trees that surrounded me; I could hear the high-pitched squealing noise that dear make, I could hear the chattering sounds of chipmunks and squirrels, I could hear the occasional owl or wolf in the distance, and I could hear the rustling leaves in the trees around me. When I was young I use to wish that life could be more like watching the stars; I'd wished life wasn't as complicated as it was, I'd wished people would treat each other the way stars treated each other, and I'd wish more then anything else in the world that we would treat ourself like burning balls of gas with no thought of ever dimming or going out until we die. Many things happened that night, on that mountain, many things which I can say had a big impact on me and my personal out look on life. Now whenever I look out on the night sky and I see those twinkling lights, those burning balls of gas, I know I'm not alone. The only time I can admit, and be honest about, truly feeling the spirit, is not when I'm reading the bible, or through doing something good, or when I have a prayer answered, And I know I defiantly don't feel it at church or any church I've been too, no, the only times I have felt the spirit of the Lord is when I'm in Brother. Tolmans seminary class, learning history from Brother. DeGraff, or when I'm deep in the mountains or "Wild" alone, listening, and gazing at the stars.

I agree with what you said in your slice. I too have felt the spirit in Br. DeGraff's class and while I was on a camping trip surrounded with nature and life. We should reach for our stars and should not let them dim down. Although when I look at the stars I feel so significantly small, knowing that God loves me and knows me helps to build me up and helps me know that we are worth more than the entire universe or any creation God has ever made.

I feel the spirit most when in seminary, or when at girls camp, just looking at the stars or the trees.

I told Mauryn and Red that I felt something change when I chose to drop out of history. (It's because I don't need any more credits to graduate) I felt like somehting was missing in my life and the spirit was not as strong in my classes. After discussing this lonly feeling, I made the conclusion that it was because I was not in Brother Degraff's class anymore. I soon realized that I needed to feel the spirit more and in brother Degraff's class, I could feel the spirit. If I had chosen not to go back to this class, I would probably feel really depressed. The main reason why I came to liahona was because of the spirit I felt in History. Paise be to God! He has inspired Brother Degraff to teach this school an important lesson in this life: "Don't just learn about History, learn FROM it."

    4. Its funny to me but i also feel the spirit in brother Degraffs class. The same way ive heard recent converts talk about the gospel and how the lds church just makes sense, history just makes sense now. Connecting school to the spirit and my beliefs gives it far more meaning and it stays in my head. Rather than just memorizing dumb facts so i can wing the upcoming test and pass the class to then just graduate and forget it all... haha im a huge fan of Liahona and hope other students get the most out of this inspired school.

So, I am a perfectionist who loves playing the piano. In our ward, the organist moved out so there was no one playing the piano in Priesthood Session. I volunteered since I knew some hymns on the piano. However, since I am a perfectionist, playing in front of people is really difficult. I could play a song at home perfectly, even with my eyes closed. But when I played in front of a congregation, my fingers would forget all the practice they had been through the previous hour; the quality of sound I would make with the piano would be far less than that of which I could potentially do. I would get so frustrated because it would seem like I didn’t know how to play a simple song when I knew it exceedingly well. (Actually that depends on if you consider Called to Serve an easy song to play.) Recently, I said a prayer that God could help me play the piano perfectly. It is said that God will help us through anything if we practice and try our hardest to achieve it. God can’t help us ace a test we haven’t studied for. Ever since I have said that prayer, not once have I failed to play a hymn perfectly or to the best of my ability.

    4. Period 3 I agree totaly and completely. I can play the piano and the cello. Once I played in sacrement meeting and I prayed that I would not mess up. However, after playing the song, I found that it is harder than it looks in front of hundreds of people. Thankfully, the Lord help me to play with most accuracy. Even though I did not play perfectly, I did play to the best of my ability.

  3. It's dark outside, more so than usual. Because of daylight savings time it will be dark for a while. Usually by the time I'm getting home I get to watch the sunrise; I miss the streaks of vibrant pink, orange, and red. If you couldn't tell time and were to step outside, you might think it was midnight. The dark roads holding cars revealed only by their headlights. I have to rely on my own headlights to see where I'm going; if I were to turn them off I would see the same as the sky: black, empty, lifeless, nothing. It's 7:30 and I'm ready for the sun; That beautiful beacon of light and symbol of truth.
Oh how lovely will be the day when the sky adjusts to the time and I get to see the beautiful sunrise after a wonderful seminary lesson.

  5. My sister is going to school, and she met a girl who wanted to know about the church. So my sister started talking to her, but got kind of worried that she wasn't doing a good job of teaching. So I sent her these scriptures, D&C 100: 2, 5-6, 10 (Replace, "Him" with you), 12, 15. All you need to do is open your mouth, and the Lord will give you what to say in the very moment you open your mouth. He will make you mighty in testimony. All you need to do is follow him, and listen to his promptings.

Last night since the time has been changed, I went to bed a little earlier. And I couldn't fall asleep. Also it didn't help that my sister kept coming and going out of my room. Also I couldn't get comfortable! I spent several hours tossing and turning. Finally I was able to fall asleep, and when I did, I had a dream about how I was trying to fall asleep! It was so annoying. So when I woke up this morning, I felt so tired, like I hadn't gotten any sleep!

    My Slice of Life:

I had this really weird dream that everyone in my family had ginormous beautyful Hook 'staches. They were big, buff, bushy, and cuuurrrrly mustaches and I called mine my flavor savor. It was even more ridiculous when I went out of my bedroom and saw that even my sisters and my mom had the immense luxuriant curly mustaches just like everybody else.
I woke up when I looked out of the window and found that we were on Jupiter and falling to infinity.

  9. Why are there such things in this life such as cancer? Why is there an abundance of heart attacks and strokes and other tragic accidents and illnesses? This is a question that I am still struggling to find the answer for. This question has come to mind lately because a friend of my family passed away just a few days ago from cancer. We drove up to her viewing last night, and it was sad for me, yet I know that she is more happy where she is now with her Father in heaven. Things like this make me wonder if Heavenly Father planned even before we were sent to Earth when he wanted his children to come "home" at certain times. Maybe this wonderful lady has a mission to accomplish in heaven at this time. :)

  10. I listened to a CD by Hank Smith yesterday! If you went to Youth Conference, you should remember him, he is really funny! the CD was called: "Being happy in an unhappy world". Hank is so good at making people laugh while they are learning! There was this story he told when he was in primary: He loved to be outside and there were two things that he did not like, school, and church. Both took a long time, and they weren't outside. He got to the point where he was wearing his play clothes under his church clothes, so that he could be in his play clothes when he got home. It was this particular Sunday, and he got seated right next to the open window! As he looked around the room, everyone had their eyes closed and heads bowed. He thought: "This was my chance!" and climbed through the window. His friend mike tried to follow him but this big hand came and closed on his shoulder. Hank had a little add-on there that made it really funny. But when he got home, his dad and the Bishop were there, and they took him back to church to endure the rest of primary. Me and my brother were in tears from laughing so hard. Speaking of laughing, we have one of the water bottles that you push the button and the mouth piece flips up, and then you can take your drink. So on our way home from church, Max wanted a drink, and this bottle had been in the car for a while, and when he pushed the button water shot from the mouthpiece and soaked him from his face to down his leg. Needless to say I almost died!

The rows of the sea come in chase of me
They try to trip me and bind my feet
The specs of the shore bid me slower pace
They stop my feet upon their face

Does the tide think that it can defeat me?
Lo! Its weapon is only a foam
Do the sands think that they can defeat me?
Lo! Their might is nothing to my own

My feet move as swiftly as they can
But the grains of the earth cause me slower to run
With all of my strength I am going
But the tides of the sea bind my feet to their tug

We are bombarded with temptations that would bring even the noblest of men down. But, we are in charge of what we do and what we do not. When we do trip, God is always there. This morning before school, I lost my notebook for English and I couldn't find it! I prayed to Heavenly Father that He could help me find my notebook. I still had to do my piano practice, and I had a feeling to do my piano practice before I looked for my English notebook. I thought this was stupid because if I did piano practice, I wouldn't have time to look for my English notebook. I decided to just bring a different notebook to school just that day and I would look for my English notebook later. When I went to do my piano practice and I lifted up the piano seat, my English notebook was sitting right in it! That was why i got a prompting to do piano practice first! It was because my English notebook was in the piano bench the whole time!

Sometimes the promptings we get from the Holy Ghost make absolutely no sense. We have to remember that God and the Holy Ghost are all knowing, and it will start to make sense that the promptings we get make no sense. Almost every time I get a prompting or hear a story about someone getting a prompting, it almost always makes sense after they did what the Holy Ghost said to do. I hope you guys follow the Holy Ghost no matter how weird or strange prompting is, and I promise it will make sense after you do.

God is all-knowing. He knows everything from what our deepest secrets are to where our English notebook is. When we pray, God shows it to us in his own due time. This life on earth is like a being in a room that is very foggy with only our poor night-vision guiding us. But, if we pray to God and have him in our life, he will flip the switch and make everything known to us, even where to find something as simple yet special as a notebook.

  19. So a few weeks ago we were having stake conference; now this wasn’t just any stake conference, Elder Robins was going to be there. Elder Robins is the president of the seventy, so this is kind of a big deal. So the week before stake conference me and my dad were sitting in Priesthood meeting waiting for church to start, and this man I have never seen before hands me an envelope with my name printed on it and say, “This is from the stake.” I took it from his hand and stared at it trying to maintain my composure. My dad leaned over and said, “It’s probably just an invitation to mission prep.” That calmed me down because it really made sense. I tore one edge of the envelope, blew it open and pulled the paper out from its sheath. I flipped it open and started reading, “Dear, Brother Galke. After much prayer and consideration, we have come to the conclusion to ask you to speak at stake conference.” It had a ton of other information on it. As I read my jaw dropped and I started freaking out, my dad just laughed as he took the paper from my hands to read it. Fast forward a week and I’m standing at the pulpit with wet palms, shaking legs and crumpled paper. Despite the nervousness, I did pretty great. Elder Robins actually came over and told me how good I did and we shared a few words. That is a memory I will never forget.

The best day of snowboarding of this winter had to be on a Sunday after a huge snow storm. When we were driving to Brighton we knew it was gonna be great because of how much snow was on the side of the road. When we entered the canyon the snow was everywhere and we read a sign that said "chains or 4x4 required", after reading this we were ecstatic to get up on that mountain. When we arrived at the resort we were some of the first to be hitting the mountain. Our first several runs were on the main trails and were a lot of fun! On the next run my friend told my other friend and i to follow him and so we did, along we went until he ducked under the out of bounds rope. The snow looked like really fluffy clouds with drop offs left and right so much powder it was up to our waists. Half way down the hill we all stopped and conversed about how amazing the snow and jumps were and what we would do if ski patrol came. At the end of the day we were dead tired and just telling stories of the day.

I recently got my first set of double pointed knitting needles!!!
(hold on for a second while I internally fan-girl)
(wait another second while you wonder why I'm fan-girling about that sort of thing)
I have been waiting to get these for two days straight, and have been actually wanting them for over a month because of this cool pattern I saw that needs them. It's super exciting that I know how to knit, because I taught myself to knit with pencils using instructional videos online a few years ago, until my mom got me my first pair of real life needles!
(hold on while I mentally fan-girl again)
This is my first time knitting in the round (or knitting in a circle) that I have ever done, and I'm so excited I caught on so quickly! I'm in the middle of my first project, and I love it so much already. Thanks for bearing with me as I get excited over something that seems sort of boring.

  22. I remember a funny experience that I had a few years back when I was going to a different school. My older siblings were going to Liahona, so they would drop me off at my school and pick up some other kids going to Liahona. The school that I was going to at the time was at the top of a hill facing East, so the sun was usually in our eyes going up. But we had to endure it. So, on this one day, my older brothers were in the front of the car, and as we turned to go up the hill, the sun was right there. I mean right there. It was really bright. Then at the same time my two older brothers that were in the front yelled "ah. Sun", pulled down the mirror flaps in the front and put on sunglasses. It was really funny. We all remember that day. Maybe. I think. Well I remember it. Anyway, I just shared that because I though it was funny and I didn't know what else to post. Oh well. That is my slice. Until next time. Over and out.

I live in Colorado. Home of extreme weather patterns, the Colorado Rockies, Denver Broncos, and miller moth season (yes, it is gross, no, I do not advise you to look it up. Ew). Where I live, our ward, and stake, is spread out really far. Our stake goes down into New Mexico. From one end to the other we probably have a 3 or 4 hour radius of our stake. So, as you can imagine, living right next to a member is really rare. But, thankfully we have one that touches the corner of our 1 acre plot of land.
They are the Cuevas Family, who are from Chile. Their kids have all moved away except their youngest, Maria. Maria is an average Chilean. Maria just turned 20. I find her situation rather odd. She doesn't have any desire to go to college. She just finished her mission papers, which is great for her! She doesn't have a job or anything, so she basically stays home all day. I really hope that she has more of a desire to go to college, or get a job when she returns from her mission. She is a really fun person too! I hope and pray that a mission can change her life.

So… I grab the last bagel from the bread cabinet, put strawberry cream cheese and a container and stick it all into a brown paper bag. The last step: making it thief proof. I glided over the snow and down the bunny hill at Brighton. I dodged trees and little children following their ski teachers. It was only my third time skiing and it was thrilling and pretty fun. I never actually imagined it to be fun, until my brother, Hawken, and my dad convinced me to go. It's weird to think I was so nimble and delicate on my skis before, because now I pass everyone around... Well most everyone. Then as I focused my attention towards the hill ahead of me, I saw KyAnne flip over and land on her side. I curved toward her direction as well as some others and I knew that this wasn't going to have a good turn out.We joked about it as she lay there helpless. She weakly giggled and ordered us to stop because it hurt her shoulder. We later found out, after she had been hauled off in a sled to the emergency room, that she had broke her shoulder. I swear my cousin is accident prone.

As my thoughts went in the way of tangents, I realized, I HAD LOCKED MY KEYS IN MY CAR! Oh the frustration! But then, I remembered my trunk is never locked! Ha! Ha! I opened my trunk, climbed over the back seat and then the driver's seat and grabbed my keys, unlocked my door, got out and relocked my door. VICTORY!!!! Earlier that day, my family and I had traveled in our 7 passenger van with sleeping bags, a tent, and other necessities to our friend's ranch out in the middle of nowhere. It had been a long drive, and I was so excited to get to their ranch. After we got there and unloaded our van, we filled the rest of the day with lots of exploring and adventures. We had jumped on BIG round hay bales, branded cows, built sand castles, and got one of our friends stuck in mud. It had been a really fun day. Now, I'm in my warm sleeping bag in our large tent that we set up in our friend's back yard.

I'm not sure what woke me up; I think it was my mom. I find myself standing outside in the cool summer night looking up at the sky....and I can't do anything but stare with my mouth open. Stars. Hundreds, no, billions of them. I have never seen so many stars in my life. There is hardly any space that is empty. Its as if each star is cramming to be seen and show their brilliancy and magnificence. Its like a blanket of tiny lights stretching from one end of the sky to the other. Suddenly, my eyes and attention turn to a light streak in the sky, and the it disappeared. A shooting star! I had always heard about them but never actually seen one before. Wow! Wait, there's another. And another! And another one! I didn't know they happened so often!

I just want to stay here for forever and look up at the great expanse of the universe. I could never get tired of an amazing sight such as this. I don't remember going back into the tent and slipping into my sleeping bag, but I do and will always remember what I saw that night. I've never seen ALL those stars again, and I miss it. I miss it so much. But "I think to myself what a wonderful world."

  50. ‘Then I fell at his feet and thought, Surely this is the hour of death, for the Lion (who is worthy of all honor) will know that I have served Tash all my days and not him…
But the Glorious One bent down his golden head and touched my forehead with his tongue and said, “Son, thou art welcome.”
But I said, “Alas, Lord, I am no son of thine but the servant of Tash.”
He answered, “Child, all the service thou hast done to Tash, I account as service done to me.”
Then by reasons of my great desire for wisdom and understanding, I overcame my fear and questioned the Glorious One and said, “Lord, is it then true, as the Ape said, that thou and Tash are one?”
The Lion growled so that the earth shook (but his wrath was not against me) and said, “It is false. Not because he and I are one, but because we are opposites, I take to me the services which thou hast done to him. For I and he are of such different kinds that no service which is vile can be done to me, and none which is not vile can be done to him. Therefore if any man swear by Tash and keep his oath for the oath’s sake, it is by me that he has truly sworn, though he know it not, and it is I who reward him. And if any man do a cruelty in my name, then, though he says the name Aslan, it is Tash whom he serves and by Tash his deed is accepted.”’
This quote has always intrigued me. It’s near the end of the seventh book in the Chronicles of Narnia; Aslan is talking to an honourable, righteous, good man who has served Tash’s name all his life.
Aslan is symbolic of Christ. He is telling this man that though he served another in name, he served Aslan in deed. Reading Preach My Gospel (pg. 46) with my family during scriptures, we came to a portion which listed the Reformers - John Wycliffe, William Tindale, Martin Luther and John Calvin - Confucius, Mohammed and Budha as people who blessed their nations and cultures with courage and vision.
The Lord appreciates it when we are righteous. Not all are blessed with the light and truth which govern the decisions of the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints have, but that doesn’t mean that He won’t accept the service and righteous acts they offer Him.
I think we need to remember that when we think of people of other beliefs. They have testimonies, they choose the right and they are loved by the Lord just as much. We should always attempt to share the Gospel and its principles with them, but we need to do so while remembering the Lord’s love and acceptance of all His children, particularily as the world fills with prejudice for differing views and ideas.

There is this delicious thing called ice cream cake. Of all the things in this world that are lovely, ice cream cake is the cream if the crop. What makes ice cream cake so delectable you ask? The answer, is the wonderful alternating layers of chocolate cake, and vanilla ice cream. The taste of those two sweets combined is something that can not be described with mere words. When they are tasted, it is as though an adorable puppy made of sugar is chasing a butterfly on the tongue. Five people. Four pieces. World War III.

    1. Wonderful! The ending is my favorite part. Great example of how to break grammar rules a bit to hit a home run.

My aunt Jacinth has been married several years, but has been unable to have a baby. Today we fouhd out that she is pregnant! To find out weather it's a boy or girl, they gave us all un-labeled silly string. on the count of three we would all spray it, if it's a boy the string would be blue, if a girl, pink. One, two, three! we all sprayed and it was blue! YAY! I'm going to have a baby cousin!

  55. I love seeing my cousins, they are awesome friends to have. And now during their Spring Break I am able to see them more and go to the temple with them. And I have been able to realize how grateful I am that families are forever and for temple and geneology work so that we will be eternally connectedwith our distant cousins.

I've never been more happy to get warm weather then I have been lately. It has been making things so much easier for being outside. I've never been a fan of the cold weather. I get cold really easily which keeps me from doing a lot of things that my family does.
On another note, I saw this post on Facebook today that said: "The next time Satan whispers to you that you're fat, ugly, tall or short, just whisper back: At least I have a body." So that was the cool spiritual thought that I found today that stuck with me.

Today I found it appropriate to just say one thing. No matter what trials you are going through no matter what it is you are always loved. I had a friend that one day I looked at and said to myself you will become who you are with. If you are with people that are kind and loving then you will become kind and loving. But if you are with people that are just the opposite then you will become just the opposite. I at one point looked at myself and said is this who Christ always wanted me to be. Am I that son or daughter that god at the finale judgment looking over my life then looks up at me and says WOW. I strongly encourage all of the people that reed this to look in the mirror and say is this who Christ and our father in heaven wanted me to become. Starting tonight I AM GOING TO BE THAT CHANGE THAT GOD WANTS ME TO BE, and I encourage you all to do the same. Nobody is perfect but you can get pretty darn close to being perfect.

I never really read through the slice of life's, but I'm way self-conscious that a lot of people read mine. Not in some weird vein way, I love to write, but I don't think I'm all that. I just figure that a lot of people read it in scrolling through all the entries. It's really... unnerving. It's unnerving to think that other people are reading what you're writing.... I was trying to figure out how to get by without putting my name at the top--didn't work, evidently. I always feel self-conscious when I show other people my writing, though. It always reminds me of that scene from "Dead Poets Society" where Mr. Keating has Todd Anderson get up and create a poem in front of the class. It's one of my favorite scenes in any movie (and story) ever. [I'll post a link to the scene.] It's an incredible scene where Mr. Keating helps Todd overcome his fears and helps show Todd's potential to both Todd and the class. It's a cool scene.

  59. Me, my sister and our two best friends went out to dinner on Saturday. It was so fun and we had the best time. Everything was funny to us which made it all the better. We went to Kneaders and ordered a ton of desserts. One of us commented that someone probably thought that we were going through breakups because of how many sweets we ate. It was really nice to have a girls night for a change.

I went to the park which behind our house on weekend. I went there with my sister and my two years old nephew. There are some swings and slippery slides on a sand. I like playing swings very much, it's really funny. My nephew real like to play the small slide, but he fear the high one. My sister wants to help him, so she took her son to the high slide, while they walked to the top, my nephew start screaming. He was really scared the height. Finally, my sister do it with him, but he was still afraid. That was a funny day.

  63. A couple of months ago we had a campout for scouts. We went to myrtle beach and the weather was beautiful. It was hot. sunny, and the waves were huge. Our whole troop brought boogie-boards so we could go into the waves and ride on them. The water was freezing, the waves were huge, and the sun was hot. A typical day at the beach, but it got a little more interesting. After about an hour of being on the beach, raccoons started coming out and eating all of our food. They left soon after because our scout leader scared them off, but then stingrays were being pushed in by the waves. We were boogie boarding when it happened, we heard a lady scream, and then we realized that there were stingrays all around us. We all panicked and ran back to shore, still shocked about the stingrays, and our scout leader decided that it was time to go. But it gets better. When we were driving back in the car, we ALL realized that we forgot to put on sunscreen. So on Sunday morning, we all had extremely red faces, and we were stiff for the rest of the weekend. Strangely enough, we still all agree that it was the best campout ever!

  64. Shows, shows have gone such a long way. I remember when my grandpa would tell me what his shows were like. they were a peace of plastic and string. They were very basic. Now we have all kinds of shows. Running shows, beach shows, water shows, and more. We are so blest to have all these amazing shows, and to be able to get them so early.
