Slice of Life: DAY 27

Remember that you are writing a snippet of your life, a slice, not giving us the whole pie, so write well but write with brevity.

After you post your slice, strive to comment on at least three other slices.

How to get entries into the raffle at the end of the challenge:
  1. Post your slice here BY 9 PM (MDT). For each time you post, you get an entry.
  2. Comment on other slices at anytime throughout the challenge. For every five thoughtful comments that you make, you get an entry.
  3. Slice every day for the entire month (31 days), and you will get an entry into a special drawing.

I hope to one day be able to get a job where I can please myself while at the same time pleasing other people. I have a lot of happiness when I serve. So, whatever I end up doing, as long as I'm serving someone I'll be happy.

  2. Spring break is nearing to a close, and all I can think about is how I look forward to seeing all of you again. Does this make me an ultra nerdy teacher? Possibly. Does it mean I haven't had fun taking a break? No. What it means entirely is that I feel like I have become a real teacher, and you are truly my students. I'm not just a fill-in until someone decides I don't belong.

My heart is full of gratitude for each and every one of you who have made sure I know I make a difference in your life. The words of gratitude and kindness have encouraged and made me feel entirely welcome at Liahona.

In Personal Progress, for my 10hr Integrity project, I made an embroidery of the 13 Article of Faith, well most of it anyway. It said:

    I will be
    Honest, True, Chaste,
    Benevolent, and Virtuous...
    If there is anything
    Virtuous, Lovely, or of
    Good Report, or Praise Worthy,
    I will seek those things.

It's huge! I'm kind of proud of it. All of the different virtues are all different colors, the lettering is very big and loopy, it has embroidered bows in each corner, and it has a big rustic white frame. It is on the wall right next to my bed, so I can always see it.
The project took 1 year almost to the day! You would not think something like that would take a year to finish! But you would be mistaken. First you have to look up all sorts of lettering options, then you have to graft what you want to say on the graft paper, by putting little dots in each square representing each stitch, center it, figure out what colors you are going to use, learn how to embroider, center your pattern on the fabric, then you start embroidering, one stitch at a time. It is a very long process. But worth it!

Good Job. Although I do not participate in Personal Progress, the same is for Scouts. Although it may seem easy to get to Eagle Rank, it takes several months to get the project set up, one day to execute the project, and then one to two months wrapping it all up and being rewarded Eagle.

Sometimes life is great. Sometimes life is lame. How, some might ask, do we have an awesome life all the time? That, my friends, is an imposable goal. Everyone will always have stupid things in their lives. But if we pull through the hard times good times will come. This is what God said to Joseph Smith when he was in liberty jail and Joseph asked Him why God had let him and his people go through these trials.

Yes! My 7x7 Rubik's cube had come!!! I scrambled it up. I know how to solve the 5x5, so the 7x7 is similar in a lot of ways. So I tried to solve the 7x7 without looking at any tutorials or anything. The first solve I got a little lucky on a part that didn't make sense... but I solved it!!! It took around 20 minutes, I think? Maybe more, I wasn't timing it. It was still really stiff though, so I tried to take the caps off so I could loosen the tensions. The caps (The center pieces) were really hard to get off, and I kind of ruined a few stickers (It was hardly anything, but any problem is magnified X10 when you are a perfectionist). I then loosened it a lot, but I stripped the screws like crazy (Again, the perfectionist thing, but I did strip the screws pretty badly)! I tried to put the caps back on but they wouldn't go back on, and I was really confused. I decided to just solve it without the middle pieces, and then try to put the caps back on. But it popped and like 10 pieces came out! I put them back in, and I solved it. Apparently when the cube had popped and I had put the pieces back on, I had put them in the wrong spots. I had to take apart half of the cube and then try to put it back together the right way. I found a way to put the caps back on, and I put the cube back together after about 20 minutes of trying. But it was really loose and I was really confused again. I took the caps back off and the cube was fine again (more added confusion). I finally figured out that when you put the caps back on it gets looser. So I tightened the tensions (as much as I could without the caps popping off, and it wasn't too tight). I have now solved it 3-4 times. I hope to become really fast at it, but first I have to learn the speed method of solving a 7x7 Rubik's cube. Two weeks ago I figured out that I had Stake Youth Conference today. We are going to a place called Aspen Grove. You get buffet for Dinner, Breakfast, and Lunch, and it is awesome! We are probably going to do some cool activities like skiing (I don't know if it is cross country or downhill but I hope it is downhill skiing because I have never been downhill skiing (Crazy Right!)). But you can't forget the spiritual part of Youth Conference of course! Anyway, when I figured out youth conference was in two weeks, I decided to learn how to solve a 2x2 Rubik's cube blindfolded (with some inspection time before solving it of course) so that I could impress anyone who wanted to watch me do it. After hours and hours (My mom said it was about 6-7 hours a day) over a 3-4 day period, I still didn't get how to solve a 2x2 Rubik's cube blindfolded. The next day it finally clicked, and after a few hours of trying to figure out all of the secrets of blindfold solving, I finally figured out how to do it. The next day after that I actually did some 2x2 blind solves in front of my friends! I still had to write down some stuff to help me blind solve, so I made a goal to do it with no paper. Two weeks later, I am able to do it pretty well without anything but my 2x2 Rubik's cube, but it takes a while for me. I am going to bring my 2x2, 3x3, 5x5, and 7x7 to Youth Conference and impress anyone that is willing to watch me. Oh yah, by the way, my new 2x2 record is 2 seconds and 5 milliseconds!!! My average is around 6.0-7.0 seconds I think!!! For the 2x2 I am learning an advanced speed method so that I can get 3-4 seconds average, but it is going to take quite a while (It's not an advanced method for nothing!).

I understand how confusing all of this stuff is, because when I showed my sister my new 7x7, she said to stop because it was giving her a headache! LOL!
If you have made it to the end of this slice, I congratulate and thank you for listening to me talk about stuff you don't understand. :)

  8. I needed a little practice with my commonly confused words, so I figured this was a fun way to do it.

I slouch at a stool in front of my easel, waiting for inspiration. Blank, I shuffle into the kitchen. I make my favorite, quick breakfast: cereal with currants. Right as I finish breakfast, my sister sits down at the piano and starts practicing. I head back to my art studio and get out some new yellow paint. I pull out a fresh canvas and set it in front of me. Paintbrush poised, I hear my sister roll three dramatic chords, creating a climatic feeling in my soul. My imagination takes the cue. The paintbrush seems to paint itself, smoothly gliding across the coarse texture of the canvas. It almost appears to follow the music. A few minutes later, I step back, only now realizing how amazing it truly is. I dab my brush into a lilac purple, complementing the yellow perfectly. All day I paint, and all day my sister practices. By the time the sun goes down, I am very complacent of my work. I just hope the judges at the Council of the Arts will not censure my work to disqualification.

P.S. I am not an artist...this is just creative writing. :) Also, there is one word I had trouble incorporating. Could anyone help me figure out how to put the word "capital" in there? I will do the other half of the C's tomorrow with the end of the story.

This week I've been getting all my stuff together for the, "Pioneer Trek" my stake is having. I've been stressing about it because it's next Thursday (April 2nd). Yesterday morning we had a, "Trek Fireside" for seminary. There was a few people that shared stories about their ancestors and how they were inspired by their examples. We then had a member of the Stake Presidency talk to us about some of the concerns we might all be having and how to prepare to have a great spiritual experience. We had a wonderful musical number by two talents youth in our stake. We then heard from all of the Seniors who had been to Trek four years ago. They each talked about how nervous they were about going to Trek and how they complained a little; they weren't excited about it. Once they got put with their families and they decided to change their attitude they had an amazing time. It was reassuring to hear each of their individual experiences. I felt so much more peace and confidence about going on Trek. I'm still a little nervous about the unknown that I have ahead of me but I think going on Trek is going to be a great testimony builder.

~If anyone has been on Trek before I would appreciate any tips or suggestions you have!~

It was funny because I really didn't want to go in the beginning. I'd say be sure to bring card games for the nights because who doesn't love a game of UNO at 1 am? Also I'd suggest hand-sanitizer, baby wipes and dry shampoo. If they let you bring a camera - do it! You'll want pictures. There also the usual camping gear, bugs spray sunscreen and clothes etc.I'd say you should wear shorts under your skirt because you won't have to worry if your skirt gets soaked through and its see through or something crazy. Have fun!

  15. "Perhaps you've noticed that the Lord is not interested in only our "bare bones" needs. Rather, in the true gospel, and through the spirit, much attention is given to individual wants, talents, abilities, etc. It is probable that many of the sweet blessings and "tiny miracles" in your life have had to do with your wants and desires, not just your needs for survival. Thus, you have the knowledge that the Lord is interested in you as an individual, and that He knows you well, and enjoys blessing you in ways that are unique, intimate, warm, and special to you."
-David J. Ridges (The Book of Mormon Made Easier)

And then to some people it may seem very small. So I don't know. I thing I would place myself in between small and medium. But that is just my sets collection. My little brother and I have a small box of LEGO's that I used to play and build amazing stuff with. But that was when I wasn't really open to playing with my sets for fear of ruining them. But now I don't really play with the LEGO box. I like taking one of my LEGO sets and improving on them. Well I call it improving. It is probably more like changing. I'm sure a lot of people have already brought this up, but I thought I would address the subject anyway. I wanted to talk about love. Love is probably the one of the most powerful things ever. It's also very sacred. The problem that I've been seeing a lot lately is that people are not treating it as such. I was talking to my aunt and siblings about the phrase "I love you." My aunt was saying how she thinks that at Liahona we use the phrase too much. Every time we say hi or goodbye to someone, we always add "I love you." I'm sure that we all have lots of people we love, and lots of friendships we love, but the word love is very powerful, and if we over-use it, it loses it's value. It's similar to our dating standards, we don't date before we are 16. Part of the reasoning behind this is that if you date people and get into relationships to early, then we won't recognize or value real relationships or real love. It's the same thing with saying I love you to all your friends, all the time. If you say it so often, then you won't realize when you really love someone, and you won't understand how absolutely sacred and powerful love is. My aunt, half jokingly, suggested we say something else instead, like "I value our friendship," at first it seemed funny, but I think it's actually a good idea. Instead of over-using and therefore diminishing the word "Love," we can say, "I value you!" It would be more accurate and preserve the sacredness of love. :)

    1. I totally agree KyAnne! I've been thinking about that as well. Before I started going to Liahona, I really only used that phrase with my family and my close friends. I think that hearing everyone say it kind of rubbed off on me. I guess another reason, is that when someone says "I love you" to me, I don't want to leave them hanging, so I say it back. I do think that it is a special phase, and should be normally used for just our family and close friends. Great Slice KyAnne!

It's taking a while to get it all organized though because our director has to edit a lot of the script. The original play has some bad stuff in it. We have practices every Friday, where we go through a couple scenes. When we practice, a lot of the lines are said over dramatically, with the occasional funny made-up-on-the-spot response to the lines before ours. We kinda don't progress as much as we could when we are laughing hysterically the whole time. I think our director is a little exasperated with us. :)

Haha. That sounds like what happened to me back in Florida. We were going to perform 'Grease,' the squeaky clean version. Then I moved however and haven't been able to watch its performance.

I have a ton of favorite songs. And one of those favorites, which many of you will know, is "Happy" by Pharrell Williams. I just love the mood that song gives me. I mean, how can you NOT like that song?? It's just so, happy! Even though that is already the name of the song, simply just the beat and demeanor of it is happy. I love it so much. Anytime I am in even the smallest bit of a sour mood and that song comes on the radio, it makes me feel better. For anyone who hasn't heard this song, I strongly suggest you google it and listen to it. It's the happiest song ever.e :)

I feel I have a hard time doing missionary work. Almost everyone I know is LDS. All the non-LDS people I know aren’t interested in the gospel. I hope I can find a way to be a missionary. Even by being a good example by picking something up for somebody in a parking lot, or holding a door open for somebody. I look forward to going on a full time mission in a few years. I hope I can find god ways to be a missionary until then.

I was going to suggest inviting someone to the Payson Temple open house if you want to find missionary opportunities. If you were not a DE, I would suggest talking to other students who might need help as a friend. Not all missionary work is just teaching people who do not know about the Gospel. It is also about teaching those who need to feel loved by heavenly father; Those who need a friend.

I've been working on driving so that I can get my license the end of August. Roads back east are so different than the ones out west. The roads around Boston are tiny, winding and there never seems to be enough room to drive but somehow we all survive! I think I'm getting to the point where it's more fun than nerve wracking to drive? Is there ever a point where that happens? I haven't nearly rammed into anything yet (knocks on wood) so I think I'm doing alright but I'll only get better with practice! :)

I remember when I was eight years old I moved from one part of Orem to another. In the house I live in now, there is a swing set. And right behind the swing set in my neighbor's back yard there is a giant pine tree that is just about taller than my house. One day I decided I wanted to hit one of the taller branches with my foot. So I got on the swing and would swing higher and higher, my foot hitting a different branch every time. And finally, the branch was right there! I stretched my foot out to reach and next thing I knew, I was out of my swing. I was plummeting towards the cement behind me and the first thing I thought was crab walk. I stretched out my arms to catch me but the impact was too hard. I ended up landing on one of my arms and I dislocated my elbow. It was not fun. I then had to wear a sling and I couldn't do any thing like running, biking, or sports. It was rough. And I defiantly learned my lesson.

Why I Want to Serve a Mission

Ever sense I was young, I have always told my parents I want to serve a Mission. At a young age, I didn't know what that really meant. Now that I'm older, I have developed a better understanding on what it means to serve a Mission. Not only that, but I found my true reason why I want to serve a full time Mission. Over the years, I have seen the hand of the Lord in my life and I want to please him. I am currently writing in my journal about the many times Heavenly Father has protected me, blessed, saved me, and answered my prayers. By serving a Mission, I would be repaying him of all the "Debt" I have. This would be to thank my God for his tender mercies and infinite hand as he has divinely intervened in my life. I praise my Father in Heaven. He is so good to me, so I will serve him for a year 1/2.

Do you want to know what is the worst? It's the worst when you get spring break from one set of classes, but don't get it from another. That's no fun. (Joseph, it sounds as though you are talking from experience.) Why yes, yes I am; how did you know? I take early morning seminary at my local high school, so my seminary doesn't take spring break for two weeks. Do you know what that means? It means that there is period of time in which I don't have anything going on for school. That just annoys me to death.

Recently, I went on a hike with another family in the ward. At some moments, the ground was level but at others, it required boy-scout climbing-merit-badge knowledge. Luckily there were ropes attached to prevent any serious injuries though. When we got to a certain point, we stopped and began cliff diving. The waves were rough and not recommended for safety, but that didn't stop us. That was the first time I had ever cliff dove off a cliff. I would pretend like I was in a slow motion movie escaping from a burning building and then I would jump off with my hands outstretched and my legs pointed lateral. Then we noticed a problem. My pair of goggles had fallen into the ocean and had begun to drift away. Seeing as how they were mine, I didn't let a second go by before I jumped in to retrieve them. Big Mistake. As I jumped in a huge wave caught me and the goggles causing us to be flung against the coral reef. I luckily was able to grab onto the goggles but wasn't able to get back to a safe point to get out of the water. I tread in the ocean, with waves and water piling on top of me, losing my oxygen quicker than I could get a hold on it. But, after a long and treacherous swim, I was able to make it back to a low point, climb myself up, and collapse on my knees as I tried to gasp for air. I would not have made that swim if I hadn't coincidentally begun a jogging class only 6 weeks before. God knows the grand scheme of things and knows what we will need in the future...

My little brother, he’s 12, like to do crazy things. One time he put a ton of dish soap in the dishwasher and sent it off. It created so many bubbles it overfilled and we had to stop it and scoop out all the bubbles. He also says the funniest things. One time my mom asked him how we greet someone at the door and he said “With a pie!” We all had a great laugh at that one. Or when he said to my mom on her birthday, ‘your hair is not turning gray, it is turning silver! It means you are wise.’ Just so everyone knows I am paraphrasing what he is saying. He always keeps our life interesting.

  34. Once a dream did weave a shade
    O'er my angel-guarded bed,
That an emmet lost its way
Where on grass methought I lay.

    Troubled, wildered, and forlorn,
    Dark, benighted, travel-worn,
    Over many a tangle spray,
All heart-broke, I heard her say:

'Oh my children! do they cry,
Do they hear their father sigh?
Now they look abroad to see,
Now return and weep for me.'

    Pitying, I dropped a tear:
    But I saw a glow-worm near,
    Who replied, 'What wailing wight
Calls the watchman of the night?

'I am set to light the ground,
While the beetle goes his round:
    Follow now the beetle's hum;
Little wanderer, hie thee home! '

  35. Today I met the person of my dreams. I meet her at aspen grove with our ward when we were at youth conference. This was THE best day of my life. most of you would be wondering why I am talking about this. Life is short DO NOT WAIST IT. Your time here is only temporary but heaven is forever. I plan to serve a mission and to someday get married in the temple and to live a celestial life with my family forever.

  37. I CAN FINALLY USE THAT MOOLAH! I can get that grenade launcher. It's a great use of my money.Except prices are still high so I don't want to buy just yet. But not much more to say here so on to a story! I joined a server and surveyed the situation. Didn't look too good. The team had 6 Engineers. Doesn't sound like too much does it? but the teams are 12 people each so that is actually a pretty bad class ratio.I jumped in as a heavy and ran to the front lines. I gasped in surprise. 6 engineers, each can make a sentry. How many sentries do you think we had? 2. ONLY 2. So i jumped in there and when all hope started to die a medic came to my aid. Together we made sure no one came within 5 yards of that cart. They died, we won.

I think thats why I really like watching them, because my family and I can relate so much, but we don't have that many kids! Another thing that they do is called courting and not dating and I really like that how they really look for a sole mate who loves God and everything. I just bought their book and I cannot wait to read it!

Reflecting on the month i think it would have been beneficial to do the slices when they were going on. However I believe that I can still take quite the learning experience from it. Luckily, DE's are allowed to turn in anything just as long as it is before the semester is over. This has been crucial in the last year of my life. It's had it's trials and tribulations, but I have been incredibly busy all the time and it was fun to try out this program for the year.

What is deepness? What makes an idea really deep? Is anything really deep? Why are there questions that humans can come up with and understand the question but not understand the answer?

Whatever the reason is, it has led to some of the best and weirdest conversations of my life. I was recently up at 2 am with some friends, and our converstations can be surprisingly thought-provoking when considered during the day. When you get a hole in a net, there are actually fewer holes. Do they steralize the needles used for lethal injections? Can you put the corn back on the cob? We may never know, but dang it late-night conversations are fun!

  45. I sit on my couch, my friends from my childhood surrounding me all grown up. My hands clutched onto the wii remote tightly as my fingers went all different directions pressing buttons. My old neighbors shouldered me trying to mess me up but failed miserably. "BRAUL!" I shouted as i hit the levitating ball multiple times. My character Meta Knight attacked my older sisters character and she flew off the screen followed by multiple lights signaling she had lost a life. The next second I was hit by my friend Lindsey and flew off the screen, loosing my last life. This is the reason I am not a fan of Super Smash Bros.
