Slice of Life: DAY 11

Sister Jackson's Slice:

Eleven is supposed to be a lucky number (I wonder who was the first person to make that up.) . . . but I digress. Since I was told eleven was considered lucky, my brain picks up on 11:11 at any time of day or night, and my heart makes a wish, I send eleven things in a list instead of top tens like a baker's dozen but one less than a dozen (if that makes any sense). Eleven makes me happy now with two ones side-by-side, separate but a real team. Eleven is lucky.

Leave your slice in the comments below and make a reply to others!
Happy slicing!

  2. I stared at the computer screen in frustration.
I had forgotten to sign up for EFY until that moment, and all the sessions that would work for me were filled up.
I refreshed the screen, and nothing changed.
I closed my computer in frustration and went to complain to mom.
She wasn't paying much attention, so I texted my dad. He suggested I call the EFY office and see if I could be put on a wait list. I did as he suggested and found out that there is no wait list.
No spots opened up, so I started praying for a miracle.
So for the next few days, both my dad and I checked the EFY page multiple times a day to see if a space had opened up.
Last night, I looked at the EFY session page a again, and saw a spot in the Independence Missouri EFY session had opened. My prayer had been answered, because this session is only thirty minutes from my house and I have nothing else going on that week.
My prayer has been answered and I get to go to EFY this year.

Oh, I'm so glad you were able to get into the EFY session you wanted! Sometimes you just have to pray and have faith things will work out. In your case, things worked out the way you had hoped. Have a great time at EFY this summer, it'll be so fun! :)

"90% of life is just showing up, 10% is doing it right."
This quote was given to me by my Teacher's quorum adviser, Brother Smith, a few years ago in Texas, and after contemplating on it for some time, I have come to know the correctness of its statement. What do you do in your youth? You attend school, hang out with friends, and prepare yourself for when you get older. What do you do when you are older? Work either in business companies or at home, attend religious meetings of some sort, and live that life until you get old, see your grand-children, and pass on. For the majority of life, if you are participating in whatever it is that life demands of you, and doing the duty assigned to you, then you will succeed. By doing it right, those are the times doing it correctly counts the most. Also, as I have thought upon it more, I have found that the numbers for the percentages are also symbolic and important. Doing what is right counts as 10% of your life, or in other words, your earnings. If that be so, then this statement could not only be the outline to your life, but also the importance of tithing, the Gospel, and those things that doing right will help you live a whole 100% life. 10% isn't much to ask of us, but the time and faith it shall take to take the right path depends on us alone.

    1. Caleb! I've been contemplating that lately too. Or, along the lines of it. My dad taught me a week or so ago to set my priorities straight. That struck me to really use my time wisely and in the correct use. I've noticed I have become more happy by using my time wisely. Time is so important and we need to understand that we don't have all the time in the world, so we must make our time here worth it.

    2. Ten percent is not much to ask at all. This slice is a great reminder to me and how I use my time as well. Thank you for sharing it.

    3. Thanks Caleigh, our time here on earth truly is short and of invaluable worth, therefore meaning it is of utmost importance that we use it wisely.

  5. A few years ago I was required to participate in an NHD (National History Day) competition. The name of this competition is very misguiding because it is NOT just one day. It is like science fair but instead of doing an experiment you present a historical event, whether it be a play, a document, an exhibit, or a paper and it could be in a group (2-4) or solo. My friends and I did a group exhibit on the rights and responsibilities of Americans (since we are a free people) taking action on genocides that happen around the world. We got lucky enough to make it to nationals and have the opportunity of a life time to take our exhibit to Washington D.C. On this trip we were also able to go to the different monuments and to many museums, including some of the Smithsonian's. It was very humid and the culture there was very different from anything I'm used to but overall it was a very fun experience.

  6. Today in Seminary only eight out of the twenty people that normally come were there. The teacher had us move from sitting at three different tables in our usual seats to one table, we ended up sitting next to people we don’t normally sit by and had more class conversation with each other, our teacher even sat with us at our table. The class seemed to go more in depth and we had a really good class discussion.

So I emailed the manager and told him the situation and he said to come down a couple hours before the show. 9. Life is hard, difficult, and it's just so upsetting at times. What we need to remember is that metal has to go through the furnace so that it can be shaped into something beautiful. Wood needs to go through sanding, carving, bending, gluing, and varnish before it can become an amazing violin. Our bad experiences help to polish us and make us stronger, wiser and better people. We have terrible trials to help humble us so that we can become more worthy of the fantastical and beautiful experiences that are laid in store for us. So when life comes to bite you in the back, never forget that these experiences might be terrible, but God knows that you can handle them and that they will help you to become the person you were born to be.

  11. Driving is like the plan of salvation.
The manual or map- Are like the scriptures it teaches us how to do things and can act as a guide to help us through our lives, and get to our destination.

The accelerator - Helps you move forward like pushing through your trials in life. But if you are speeding it's like not taking time to reflect on anything, just simply driving on by. Which can cause an accident or someone getting hurt. You must learn to maintain a certain speed limit to avoid crashes.

The Brake- Stops us from moving, like a stop sign we must stop to avoid crashing in the ongoing traffic. Sometimes in life we have to stop and wait for cars or pedestrians, before we proceed onto our path of travel. Or it could be related to choosing not to repent after we have sinned, we are simply stopped in one position afraid to push on the accelerator because we feel moving on is too hard for us.

Laws/Rules- Are the commandments that God sets for us to follow, to stay on the straight and narrow path to live with him again. You break them you end up getting a ticket or lose blessings.

Friends are so important. Today we had one of our good family friends from Houston come visit us in Amarillo on his way up to Arizona. We didn't realize how much we had missed him until he stopped by. It's amazing how people influence your lives, and then when someone leaves we don't have that influence and that presence that they have. I'm so grateful that he stopped by and hope that he does again on his way home.

I helped my mom out today by weeding around the front of our house.
The weather has gotten so nice and the sun has been peeking out over the mountains in cool clouds with a chilly breeze. I don't mind the chill as much because its the beginning of Spring.
The earth is starting to renew and the flowers are starting to bloom and the leaves are becoming green again. I plucked the weeds from the soft dirt buried by leaves and twigs.

  15. This morning, I finally tackled the task of folding my laundry, which had been sitting in a pile of cleanness for more than a few days. I settled into my familiar spot on the bottom bunk, inserted my earbuds, and reveled in my own genius as I placed the clothes on their hangers and hung the hangers from the braces for the bunk above me. They functioned as curtains to shield me from distraction. Only problem is, now I have a bunch of clothes hanging on my bed, which I have not yet removed.
Ah, laundry. It infects me with a laziness that I cannot explain.

Have you ever been driving down the road in your car and have a bad song pop up on the radio? It is so obnoxious and depressing. I usually can notice a change right off. Bad music is depressing but, good music is very uplifting. It has good effects and makes you feel better inside. In my opinion piano music is one of the best kinds of good music. One of my daily joys is a little ferret named Jasper or known more commonly by his nick name Bonebear.
His nickname tells a lot about him: he is a cream colored little guy with milk chocolate markings and the reason for being called a bear is the way he shambles around like a little bear.
He hops and he flops and often he barks and even at moments you might catch a huff, huff to top it all off, but all together the little tumble weed is my bud and one of the finest little pets to own.

The first day that I really felt my age and that I could be a responsible adult, was the day that I received something in the mail that I had purchased online for a lot of money that I’ve never spent in one place before. My camera had arrived. It’s a Nikon D3100, and it’s mine- all mine. I don’t have to borrow other people’s cameras. I don’t have to hurry and get my pictures off before I return it to its rightful owner. I don’t have to say to other people, “Be careful it’s not mine.” Instead I say, “Be careful or I will break you!” I love to sling it over may neck, hold it up to my eye with one hand holding the side and the other on the lens adjuster. I love taking pictures with it. The only problem is that I’m taking up all the storage space on the family computer.

Sometimes, life really hits me in the face about just how much I take for granted the abundant blessings in my life. I mean, one of the things I did Sergio, the foreign exchange student staying with us, on his last day was I taught him how to ride my old motorcycle. It was pretty easy for him to learn and I was able to get my bigger motorcycle started and we played around on those for quite a while. I realized how blessed I am to have Sergio in my life and how blessed I was to have been able to buy a newer motorcycle, since I had grown out of my smaller one. This allowed Sergio and I to ride together and mess around in my back yard. I also realized how blessed I am to have such a big back yard. When you slow down and think about your life in a positive way Instead of a more negative then we will see and appreciate everything more and be happier.

I still miss him, but he is young again, playing and running around in heaven, and he feels no more pain of failing kidneys, blindness, arthritis, bad hips, or any of the other problems he had. Alley will be happy and healed when she has passed, but she will miss you, just like you'll miss her. Some people say it gets better. Let me brake it to you; it doesn't. But keep your head up, Alley wouldn't want to see you sad. She wants you to be happy. There is still life to enjoy. Nothing will ever replace her, but another furry friend is great to help heal a broken heart. My new dog won't replace my old one, but she sure has helped me stay positive. :)

She can run faster than any other dog I've seen, and the thing is, Australian Shepards never run out of energy. Even when they're old. When she runs, she flattens her ears back and rockets right towards you, with a crazed look on her face, and runs right into you. Then she licks your face... ew. Ellie also loves to wrestle, and she can jump extremely high. Aussies can jump over 6 foot fences!

Ellie always chases rabbits (which we have a lot of), but never caught any of them. She would chase them, then get bored and come back. Until one day she actually decided to catch one, gut it, and start skinning it. All on our back porch... a couple of days after I said the rabbit was faster. Then a day after the dead rabbit incident, I said the same thing about the birds. The next day she caught a bird. SO I just keep my mouth shut. Ellie also loves to snuggle whenever I sit on the floor to read. :)

    1. That remind me about how when I was little my dog ate a rabbit. fun times. Your dog sounds more interesting than my dog who doesn't do much.

I really enjoy listening to music. Recently I've been listening to a lot of Frank Sinatra. I love his style of singing and it's really nice music. I could listen to music all day.

  36. Well, I have discovered new music and I have been listening to it a lot. music is a big part of our lives. A persons favorite song can tell you more about them then they could ever tell you.

  38. When I woke up this morning I realized something: Seminary is almost over. It's kind of crazy to think about, but we only have about a week and a half left. I don't know how many of you have early morning seminary, but mine starts at 5:40am. So you could understand how I'm sort of excited that it's coming to an end, but at the same time I'll miss having it to start my day.

  40. Netflix is my life. Why would I go outside and socialize when I can find out what happens next on my favorite binge tv show. I love to curl up with a bunch of blankets, put like 5 fans in the room, and just hibernate for a day or more. The supplies list includes Cookie dough, blankets x10, wifi, large tv or laptop, phone, popcorn, and a cat.
