Slice of Life: DAY 12
Sister Jackson's Slice:
I miss my mom. She's left the earth for heaven for thirteen years now, but I can't ever let this day go by without honoring her. I've decided to do something a little bigger than just my written words this year: I want to challenge you.
To anyone who reads these words, I challenge you to write a note of love and gratitude or give a phone call out of the blue right now or send a text just to say you care or find her and give her a warm and generous hug. And do this for you--not for me--not for her--do it for you.
Leave your slice in the comments below and make a reply to others!
Happy slicing!

ReplyDeleteDon't you absolutely despise that feeling you get when you feel there is something you need to do, and yet you have no knowledge on what it is that is calling to you until the expected party brings it to your remembrance? I luckily have not had to experience this feeling because I torment my brain until that feeling goes away either by that specific assignment opening its doors to me or I can acknowledge it as being a false alarm, but my elder brother has. During Sacrament meeting, as the member of the bishopric was reading off who would be speaking to us, my brother's name was spoken. I looked to him because I myself was surprised, for he had made no mention that he was to be giving a talk on that day. All I saw was a slightly gaped mouth, eyes wide open and fixedly staring at some point who knows where, and this overall look of fear, shock, and a remembrance of having been confronted by the bishopric wherein he was assigned a topic for his talk. He did the best he could to prepare with the 17 minutes provided to him (luckily there's always that lady who can just keep going), delivered it to the best of his preparation, and sat down affirming to himself that such a thing will never happen again, for he told me so with his own voice.
As a teenager, I would have wanted to run! What an awesome brother to step up and make the best of it. As an adult, I think I could prepare something at the drop of a hat, but only if I had my marked up, well-loved scriptures to help me.

DeleteWell, that was supposed to be my slice^^
DeleteHere's my comment:
Caleb, I find that very amusing! Yes, there is always "that" lady. And the opera one siting behind you!
Well sacrament sure is a bit scary. But then there's also teaching the lesson in Priests not even knowing you had to teach it. Luckily I rely on Gospel Library for my church stuff so I was able to have a lesson ready in like 5 minutes.
DeleteThanks Sister Jackson, Caleigh, and Michael. The Scriptures and Gospel Library are awesome in that they can help you even in the most dire of times, and yes Caleigh, there is always that opera singer. . .
DeleteWow...that must have sucked for your Brother. It sounds like he handled it well though. Thank you for sharing is story because it made me crack a smile.

ReplyDeleteSo, it's early in the morning and we are all getting ready for the region competition today. My stomach is full of butterflies and I'm kind of nervous but mostly excited to get it over with. I have a comedic monologue from The Miss Firecracker Contest. It's been so fun to play car now in my monologue. Wish us luck today!
Good luck! I've seen you do monologues before Caleigh and you are such an amazing actor. Don't forget to pray to God and ask him to help you be at your best! He really does help. I'll pray for you too! :)
DeleteJeez you scared? Never thought of you as being the scared type.
Deleteyou will do amazing!
DeleteOh Micheal, she gets so jittery before performances! :) But Caleigh, your monologue is my favoritestest thing ever!
DeleteBe AWSOME... I know it's a little late to say that but good luck in the past.
DeleteI know the feeling! I get nervous before my rock climbing competitions. Luckily a prayer for comfort can work wonders.

Music, is an amazing thing that really inspires me. I can't go a day without it, it blesses me in my life and puts me in a better mood. I am so glad that I can listen to the words that are being spoken and the sound of the orchestra playing their instruments. I love those days when I can jam out with my sister while cleaning the house or in the car with my friends. There's a quote I love that says "Music speaks what cannot be expressed soothes the mind and gives it rest heals the heart and makes it whole flows from heaven to the soul." It's so true music is such a big part in our lives it speaks to us through our hearts. I love music such as singing playing the piano and listening to other people's passion for it as well.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more! Music has a way of speaking to someone that words can't do. I wouldn't be the person I am today with out the hope, inspiration, spirit, strength, and gratitude that I have gotten from music.
DeleteLove your wonderful thoughts on music and that awesome quote! Great work. ^^

I have a new favorite song! It’s called “Crazy Love” by Mindy Gledhill. Here are some of the lyrics:
ReplyDeleteFirst half of the first verse:
“Nobody knows
That I am secret spy
I follow you home
Careful to walk behind you
I climb up your tree
And hide in the leaves
To keep you from seeing who I am”
And then my favorite part is in the last part of the chorus:
“Well, I'll tell you why
I'm the definition of
Obsessive compulsive crazy love”
Every time I hear that last part of the chorus I smile. I hope that doesn’t label me as a stalker in the making. XD
Gotta love music
DeleteAhh I love Mindy Gledhill's music too! Awesome slice on your fav music! ^^

There it is again. Over and over again. These hiccups are so strong! It's been a while since I've hiccuped this hard, or at all really. But it really does hurt. But who cares? I mowed and weeded the neighbor's yard today so I got the last of the Dr. Pepper. Bring it on, hiccups. I got soda to keep you back.
Haha I've never had hiccups that hurt... that stinks, but it is a little funny too. I love DP! I don't get it almost ever though 'cause my dad doesn't want me to have too much caffeine since it's not good for me, and he doesn't want me to get any more hyper than I already am. :p Also, that's very kind of you to do yard work for your neighbors!
DeleteI have honestly never DP because it isn't good for me. Funny thing is I have had more chocolate than I deserve!
DeleteThat was so funny! Oh my gosh! Also, this sounds weird, but if you take a couple spoonfuls of pickle juice then your hiccups will go away really fast. :)
DeleteI eat a spoonful of sugar. That makes my hiccups go away.
DeleteI'm really grateful for friends, specifically my rifle team friend. I've been super frustrated lately with shooting, because I haven't been doing well, and I actually got moved down lower on the team lineup. But my friend is always supportive and encouraging, and he always tells me it's okay and I did well, even if I obviously did horribly. He gives me whatever tips he can think of and helps me whenever possible. I'm very thankful that he is on the team with me, to lift my spirits and keep me from giving up on myself.

That's so cool that you are on a rifle team! It's also great to have friends that are always there to help you feel better! If you're on a team for rifle shooting then you are already good! Just remember god gave us talents to nuture and grow. Just work at it, you'll get it!!

ReplyDeleteOKAY! So, I've attempted writing on several topics but none of them seemed to flow or make sense. Next, I tried writing about how it was a bit difficult for my words to make sense but thinking of what I'm grateful for helps me get through difficult days. Some how, I accidentally deleted all that I had written and it is now lost somewhere in space. Today is not 'my' day but you know what? That's okay. I'm just laughing at how hard it has proven, for me to write a slice today! So, before I some how end up deleting this slice, I'm going to post it and hope that I'll work for me this time. Please excuse my scattered, jumbled, mess of words, it's been a crazy adventure, one of which I'm still recovering!;) I hope you all have a wonderful day!
Haha, I really enjoyed reading this! I've had days like that too Isabelle and I totally empathize. I hope you have a wonderful day too!
DeleteYes I know the feeling. I just did the almost the exact same two days ago. I started/wrote about 3 or 4 slices and didn't have a single one I liked so I simply put the best one :/
DeleteI have been living in a medical boot for 7 1/2 months. I got a stress fracture on my foot while I was working out it sucked. I was only suppose to have to wear it for 6 weeks, and every time I go into an appointment and they tell me I have it for the next 6 weeks I get frustrated, sad, and even sometimes depressed. I can't walk on my foot so I have to have everyone do everything for me, which is super hard for someone who is so independent, and loves to workout. It's really hard not being able to be independent, but the hardest part of having a boot is not being able to babysit. You might have just read that last sentence twice if not more thinking out of all of the things she misses that is it. let me explain. If you think about little kids what is your first reaction? It might be "they are so annoying", "they are so cute", "look at their clothes, sooo cute,” “that baby won’t stop making a mess” “they only eat, sleep, and poop” . When I see those babies and toddlers I see a child of god, I see a human being that makes me smile beyond imagine. Nothing makes me smile more than that smile I can put on a kid who has a bad day or the smile I put on a kids face when they find out I want to play their favorite game with them even though I absolutely hate it! I have a young women’s leader that has an almost 1 year old that is very cute. During class everyone is trying to hold her but I sit back and just smile. Of course I want to hold her but she is more to me than a doll, I see a sweet spirit, a see someone that is strong that is going to grow up to be just as amazing as her mom. Of course she is a baby but she is so much more to me than that. There is a family I babysit for when I don’t have a boot on and I went over to her house a few weeks ago. while I was there she had me come and watch her daughter who is 1 ½ wake up. It was the cutest thing ever. The mom picked up her daughter after she woke up and I went over and I just smiled at her as she was falling back asleep on her mother. Her mom saw me her watching her daughter and said “you really do love children” when she said that I started tearing up because yeah it’s true they have a special spirit about them that is a magnet to me. I don’t babysit for the money I babysit so I can see those sweet innocent children even though they can sometimes be monsters. Yeah I want to get this boot off so I can go do kick boxing again and so I can do things for myself, but most of all I want to be able to spend those few hours with those kids just so I can see their smile that makes me smile.

DeleteOh my goodness, this is so sweet! This just made my day! Jaedyn, I love your perspective. It's true, babies may be cute little things or really frustrating at times but they are precious Spirits of God, just like you and I! That is really admirable that you babysit to cheer little children up and enjoy their company, instead of just doing it to earn money. I think you'll be a wonderful mother someday! I hope you can get your boot off soon, that must be really frustrating, not being able to do things on your own. I'm sure you've learned a thing or two, with that boot on! ;) Thank you for sharing the wonderful perspective you have.

ReplyDeleteMy mind moved with the ebb and flow of waves in motion, so much thought and so much time waiting to know what to decide.
Stomach in knots and mind in the tide I search for the path to my dreams that is rocky and wide.
There is still so much to climb I know, but what adventure would there be without aspiration of what lies ahead of me?
Step by step I ascend; no challenge is easy, no feat given without sacrifice and no reward earned without a fight.
Beautiful and inspiring Slice Astara! This can be applied so much to how life is difficult but worth it.

DeleteI love this, Anastasia, great job! I think you're right, what fun would an adventure be without a little bit of a challenge!? It makes a task filled with more satisfaction, if you are able to accomplish such a thing, despite the challenges that were placed before you. Life is not meant to be easy but because it is difficult, we can find even more joy in overcoming the hardships.

When I was around seven years old my Granny sat me down and taught me how to embroidery by hand. When I was about nine a lady came to our Wednesday night class and taught us the basics of crochet and a family friend of ours continued to teach me new stitches and some of the other things I would need to know to strengthen my skill. When I was about twelve my Grandpa was in the hospital for two or three weeks and we were the only family close by so we’d spend a lot of time at the hospital sitting with him, it was there where I taught myself how to knit. I am now able to teach my younger sisters these things passing on the lessons I was taught.

Those are certainly great talents to attain that could possibly help you in the future.
DeleteMothers take care of their babies in such different ways. I have been tagging and moving calves most of the day and it is interesting to notice the difference in the way the cow acts toward you. If the cow is not worried about where her calf is, you can simply drive off with the calf and she won’t even notice! Then there are the cows who want to kill anything that comes near them or their calves. (Those kind aren’t so fun) Also there are those who are constantly aware of where their calf is but they are not overly protective. I think people are the same way. It is important to stay balanced so you are not overly protective and yet still protective if needs be.
ReplyDeleteParental balance is tricky. I like the connections you bring out for us to learn from. Thank you!
DeleteWe lost four chickens this afternoon. Sunny, Oreo, Misty and Buttercup. Golden Retrievers just acted like dogs. I know they are okay. God has them now. It's just hard.

DeleteI’ll admit, cleaning is not my favorite thing to do. Today we had to do our “deep cleaning.” It’s when we clean more than just what’s on the surface. We use all the lovely chemicals with that overpowering and nauseating scent to really scrub and diminish the abhorrent germs and uncleanliness that roam about our home. We clean the things that usually clean things, like the sinks, showers and the washing machine. We scrub and wash the things that withhold us in our comfort, like the walls, floors and our clothes. We tweak the little things like the windows, mirrors, and fans. Cleaning is not the most exciting activity in the world but when all the hard work is done, it certainly looks great.
ReplyDeleteEveryone keeps talking about cleaning, and I'm over here thinking I need to hire some of you to help me out.
DeleteI also hate cleaning, but I eventually force myself to clean thing because I like the outcome of things being clean. The end result makes the hard work worth it.

ReplyDeleteToday was the region drama competition. If you get at least one superior (the highest rating) then you qualify for the state competition. I have a dramatic monologue, it is quite intense. I didn't really have any feelings today, I wasn't nervous or scared or even excited. I was just... meh. But I got into my part really well, and I was thinking that I did pretty okay. After your three rounds there is a break until the judge people post the trophy round lists. The trophy rounds are like the tiebreaker, all the best people from each category perform in front of three judges, and that's how they decide the winners. I was laying on the floor of the gym, where everybody went to wait, and I was kinda almost asleep. Suddenly a roar awakens from the babble of high school kids, as people spread the news that the trophy round lists are finally up, thought 10 minutes late. I, naturally, am to comfortable to move. So I stayed on the floor, along with Red and Maggie. A guy, Ben, that I had met in one of my rounds asks me if I want him to check the lists for my number. I say yes. Ben is nice. A few minutes later Ben came down and told me that I did qualify! I say, "Aww dang it!" It's not that I don't want to show off my amazingness for all to see, it's just that I really enjoy hard gym floors and comfy Maggie sweater pillows. But I got up. After the trophy round, where I learned that silence is nerve racking, I got incredibly hyper. If you don't believe me, ask Tony. Or anyone that was there. Time for the award ceremony! Wow, Liahona did really well! Dramatic monologues. Third place... Zach! Woo! I knew it! Second place... Julia! Yes! First place....
in the region 18 drama competition of 2016.....
KyAnne! Haha, that's me! I am KyAnne! I am first place! I didn't actually get that excited. I kinda just was like, "Woah cool" and walked down to get my medal. Guys, the burgers I had on the way home weren't that good. Also I didn't get to ride on the bus. Also this slice is way too long. Also, y'all should've seen Caleigh's monologue, it's hilarious!
You got first! Fantastic, KyAnne! I'm so thankful for slice of life even if it is only to find out news like this right away. Wonderful!

DeleteYa! Nice job Kyanne! I love that you added in random things to accentuate your hyper-ness! I'm sorry the burgers weren't that good. That's always a disappointment. You definitely deserve some ice cream or something to make up for the bad burger, and to celebrate the win.

Today was crazy! Wanna know why today was crazy! Well it's because region drama competition was today! Here's what happened, I woke up at 6 and had to race to get ready because carpool was coming at 6:45-50. I get ready and get all my props set and I remember my suitcase isn't packed. I needed my suitcase packed because my family was going to load up the car and pick me up straight from competition and start our trip to Saint George and from there California! So my mom says she's just take care of it and that if I need anything we can call each other. So I get to the school and (pretty much) immediately get on a rented school bus and start the trek to American preparatory academy in draper. We get there and there is an amazing new style play ground which my fiends and I end up playing on a bunch. The rounds that I'm in don't start for a little bit so I just hang out and watch others perform. Me, Maddie and Joleah end up doing great in all of our rounds. We end up having to perform it once more for trophy round and rock it there too. I have to leave a little early so I'm not there for the awards ceremony but find out my trio won first for classical scenes! After all that I get to relax for a few hours in my car driving to Saint George. I'm so grateful for these opportunities to show my talents and compete with other schools with my friends at my side!
You got first! I am so happy for you three. How amazing!
Delete-Teenage rebellion much?-
ReplyDeleteI laughed as I read his text, hurriedly responding.
-I'm so good at this type of rebellion! Very harmless. And very delicious-
I hurried to my car and turned the engine on, backing up with the lights off. I couldn't wake up my siblings. It wasn't completely sneaking out as my mom knew where I was going but it was exciting all the same.
I pulled into the drive thru and ordered. I needed a double cheeseburger, fries, and raspberry lemonade. There was no raspberry lemonade... Strawberry is close enough... Right? I added on what I wanted and payed.
I started the drive to his house, music blaring, and eating fries. I wasn't honestly sure if they were his or mine. As I drove I thought over the events of the evening. The stake dance had been fun and full of laughter. The music was slightly lame, if I was going to be picky, but the company was great. I turned onto his street, flipping my lights off as I neared his driveway. I pulled up at the bottom of the hill and flipped the car off.
I sent a text of an emoji whale and waited. I got one back and grabbed the bag with his food. I ran up the hill and he hurried out into the porch to meet me. I passed him the bag and he grinned, pulling out his wallet. "Thank you!" He whispered.
"Of course and just pay me back on Monday." I started off down the hill again, not wanting to get him in trouble.
"Wait." He pulled me into a hug and I resisted the urge to laugh.
"Don't get caught!" I threw myself into my car and drove off, flipping the lights back on as I went.
What a fun story. I want more details now. Alas, I believe we won't get any.

ReplyDeleteI work for a company that was called American Laser Crafts. It's a great job and I love it. Recently, as in two days ago, the name was changed. We had a little contest where we were given two hints about the name and each employee had to try and guess it. The hints were (1) it starts with Q and (2) it's a made up word. Yikes!! Good luck! Some of the guesses were pretty interesting like "Quantix", "Quaftsy", and even "Quaptain America Laser Crafts". Yep. But our new name is Qualtry.
Qualtry. Qualtry. I keep wanting to say quality. Anyway, apparently this is a trick that businesses do because it helps them to grow. The name is new, simple, and easy to remember because no one has ever heard it before; it's different. Well, I was thinking about that and connecting it with our discussions in English about how languages change. People make up new words and then we get used to them and use them all time until it becomes second nature. Well, here is living proof. Qualtry. Qualtry. You should check us out. We're pretty cool.
I love that you made a connection to the English language history we've been studying. This is a perfect example!

ReplyDeleteI sat on the floor in my room, hunched over my logarithmic equations, the door ajar. This was not how it was done. Studying for math was bad for the imagination.
I hear a creak as my toddler sister, Mercy, peeked an eye through the door. She saw that I had noticed her and took it as an invitation to come in and wreak havoc through my room. We both giggled as I scooped her up, plopped her on my bed, and proceeded to tickle her until she was breathless. She slowly lost interest in the game. Her smile faded and she babbled at me to release her so she could go play on my bedframe. I discharged Mercy Moo, and got back to my math. She slid down my bed and climbed back up, excited with her new game.

ReplyDeleteThis year at Science Olympiad my events were Write It Do it, and Scrambler. With Write It Do it one person looks at a structure that the judge made for twenty minutes, and writes instructions while the other person is in a different room. Then the person that looked at the structure gives the instructions to the other person that does it. Then they have twenty-five minutes to build the same structure using materials that they give you. For scrambler you make launcher that propels a car eight meters, the car has to stop before the wall or you lose one thousand points. If you crack your egg on the front of your car you lose one thousand points, if you get out of bounds of the track you also lose one thousand points. Our car did not go far, but it didn’t hit the wall or go out of bounds. We got 2nd place for write it do it, and 4th in scrambler in regionals. Not bad for the 2nd year of Science Olympiad.

DeleteI get really weird dreams so dont judge. I can have dreams from having my brother in it all the way to Justin Beiber..... yaaaaaaa..... Dreams are really weird they can be sad happy and scary. There are weird things about dreams that nobody really knows except the people who look it up (like me right now). Did you know dreams have been insparatoinal for some people? Well Larry Page got the idea for google during a dream, and Elias Howe the idea for a sewing machine. so ya dreams are crazy.
ReplyDeleteSo my rock climbing practices can get pretty weird. My teammates, coach, and I try to have a lot of fun at practices, so they get a little crazy. One time we were taking turns climbing and the frist kid to go took the rope out of the bucket that it's kept in and set up the rope. While they were setting up, one kid who's about 11 saw the empty bucket and sat in it. Which was great until he stood up and he was stuck in the bucket. He spent the next 10 minutes running around the gum stuck in a bucket. We got some pretty weird looks from the other climbers in the gym.

Not so long ago, in a galaxy not far away there was a boy who was trying to throw a 2 by 4 up in the air and catching it. Except this boy doesn’t have very good hand eye coordination. Trying to catch the 2 by 4 except he missis and ending up hitting himself in the for head. Not my brightest idea ever.
ReplyDeleteNo joke I literally fell out of my chair laughing.
DeleteYou know the universe is well when your dog and cat are on the same couch and not killing each other.
