Sister Jackson's Slice:
The little children see me in the hallway, and they either smile or they cry. Being the song leader at church for 1 1/2-3-year-olds has been one of the happiest times for me in a long while. These tiny people love me just because I make sure they have snacks and I sing with them for 5-10 minutes (depending on their behavior) once a week.
The cutest thing happened when one of the little cuties' mother ran into me at the store. Her son was in the shopping cart, and she didn't call attention to me until he was right next to me, and the look of pure surprise and wonder and disbelief at how his music teacher could be at the store was priceless. I'll never forget that look. I felt so beloved as a person in that moment--even though he was rejecting reality!

Nuh Uh. I can't be the only one who came to post today. I know it's daylight savings but it's 12!!!!!! What? So I am first... ;)
ReplyDeleteSo today was my niece's baby blessing. Her name was Willow. Logan and Erin had her new year's day. I got to hold her. She was blessed in their Spanish ward,(Which was odd but that's okay), But I liked it.
Sooo if no one posts, I will rule the Slice Of Life! Forever! MHAHAHAHAHA!! Just Kidding.

Julie! I was gonna post about the exact same thing! Twinners!

ReplyDeleteWe went to our little cousin's baby blessing today. Her name's Naomi Grace Kerr. She has this plump little body that is so fun to hold and squeeze!
Their ward building reminds me of my Long Island Stake building. It had more old vibe to it; reminded me of home.
I also love how their building is only two blocks away. Even in heels, I walked happily along in the gorgeous weather. Beautiful Sunday afternoon.
PS: Update from region comp. We placed and pretty much creamed everyone. Yes, that's prideful but we all worked real hard. First in the One Act, Sweeps, and along with so many other scenes.
Congrats at the region comp!!!!

DeleteIt's nice being twinners with Caleigh. I love how descriptive this slice is. Good job!
DeleteThat is so awesome that you guys won regions! I knew you guys could do it! Also, your cousin sounds absolutely adorably delightful! :)

Tired and sleepy I go to Disneyland tomorrow so that may be fun. But to be honest I'd rather be at home right now just chilling with my girlfriend or playing a Sunday's game of Starcraft with my friends. Yup... That's the good stuff alright.
ReplyDeleteXD ikr. My mom has been to Disney land a lot because we used to live by it. She wants to go back, so me and my little sister can enjoy it. I have never been interested in going to Disney land, but she out of the blue said she wanted to go to Disney land. I was alright with it, but I just told her that I would rather just stay home. I would go, but she said she was just joking. She wanted to see my reaction.
DeleteI live in France you know.

DeleteSo yesterday I was driving to a fireside and it was in Independence Missouri, where many of the early saints lived. I started thinking about how they were persecuted there and eventually driven out because of their religion.
ReplyDeleteI parked in the parking lot between the visitors center and stake center, and thought about how neat it is that I was standing on the same ground the early saints walked on.
If I had been standing in that same spot in the 1830’s, it would have been perfectly legal to shoot me dead under the Extermination Order. Now, it is perfectly illegal to kill anyone of any religion in Missouri.
Most of the building that the early saints build were probably burnt down, and here I was standing between two buildings owned by our church, that have been standing for a number of years. We don’t have to worry about them being burnt down by mobs anymore.
The saints tried to build a temple a couple different places in Missouri, but never got the chance to because the kept getting driven out by mobs. Now, we do have a temple in the this general part of Missouri, and we don’t have to worry about mobs wanting to destroy it.
I guess what I’m trying to say here is that I’m grateful that we are free to practice our religion where and how we want. I'm grateful for the sacrifices of the early saints. I think it's so neat that how even though the saints were driven out of the area, there are Mormons in the area again and we are free from persecution.
This is such great insight and thought about the past and today and how blessed we are to believe and practice our faith. Wonderful slice!

ReplyDeleteI enjoy Sunday for many reasons, here are some that make me smile as I write.
I love going to church and getting to enjoy the company other the other young woman in my ward, I love hearing inspiring messages that sometimes help me see principles in a way I can better understand and cherish.
Another of my enjoyments is after church sitting on my couch with a pup by my lap and writing to a great uncle of mine who will be turning one hundred this year! I send a sketch to him each week and while doing so I watch BYU TV which without my life would be incomplete, they have such great programs and it uplifts my Sabbath.
I would go on about more things I love to do but that is for another slice. Hope you all have a wonderful Sabbath doing things that bring you closer to Christ.
I am glad you posted that Sundays are great.(most of the time) :]
DeleteI love BYU TV! And puppies! And Sundays!
DeleteThank you both! And Hannah I know what you mean, most of the time they are great but as in life they have there ups and downs.
DeleteI love Sundays. They are just an awesome day to feel calm and relieved. I just always feel this calmness, no matter what I do, and I never feel stressed or anything. Thank You
DeleteSunday really is a wonderful day that our Heavenly Father carefully decided to be a day for us to rest from all the chaos that goes on throughout the week.
DeleteI love it! My favorite part of Sundays is for sure being uplifted spiritually, and finding little gems during Sunday School and Young Women's. I especially love Young Women's because we have such good discussions!
DeleteDaylight Saving Time is the worst!
ReplyDeleteIts so pointless! Why can't Utah just be like Arizona and not do it at all. It messes up your sleep cycle and makes you late for work and school, not to mention tired.
Its the worst.

Totally agree! It doesn't change anything. The day is still 24 hours long. It is like having blanket that is to short so you cut of the bottom of the blanket and so it on the top. The blanket is still to short!
DeleteI agree!! I hate it! It is pointless. But it is kinda nice on that day you get another hour of sleep... But still pointless.
DeleteI agree Rachel! I hate getting less sleep. We should have people sign a petition to ban it from Utah. :p

ReplyDeleteSo today after church my parents decided to take us (myself and my two sisters) on a drive around town. So we just kinda wandered until my mom asked if I knew how to get to the airport. We then headed that way, but stopped to explore a few times and then passed the airport to go watch planes touch-down and take off. There was one tiny plane that keep doing touch and go's, and that was really fun to watch. Then my dad asked if I knew where to pick someone up at the airport, and I said yes, but he wanted me to prove it. So I directed him to the passenger pick-up and all of the sudden he said "Why don't we give this random kid a ride?" We were all like, "What?" Then we all looked over to see my older brother standing there with a huge smile on his face! I then , very articulately, said: "What the freak is he doing here!?!" My parents and brother had secretly and successfully planned and executed to fly my brother home for spring break without telling me and my two younger sisters. We had NO IDEA that he was coming. It was a nice surprise that will surely be driving me crazy in no time.
I LOVE THIS. What a wonderful surprise. I am so happy for you.
DeleteThat is really cool! I love it when my parents do cool surprises like that! I can totally relate, they did that to us one time!
DeleteThat is so amazingly awesome!
DeleteTo me faith is like a boat with two paddles: action and belief. Without one of these paddles the boat will simply go in circles and get you nowhere. If your boat is going nowhere you do not have faith. One paddle however is still better than none! Having belief is a great start but you must act on that belief for it to become faith. Prayer is one of those actions. If you believe God will bless you so you pray and ask him to, you have exercised faith. After all, faith without works is dead.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree Hannah! I love that analogy by the way. :)

ReplyDeleteMy Young Women's teacher challenged us today to share this video and our thoughts on it. I love this video, I don't know what I can say that it didn't, but I did think of this. Sometimes we expect the Lord to answer right away and in the easiest and convenient way for us, and we get disappointed when he doesn't answer, but he always answers it might just not be in the way we expect or want. Sometimes it helps to step back and look at the problem again, then you will see His hand helping you when you didn't notice before.
Here is the video :)

DeleteI hate being late. I was late to church today because my family and I had gone down to Heber to look at a home that is similar to what our new one will be, and we took too long. We ended up missing the first half of sacrament meeting. :( Another thing I was late in today: My Slice of Life Post. I've been eating dinner, reading: "Tennis Shoes among the Nephites," and watching "The Gospel of John," so I haven't gotten to writing until now. So yeah, that was my life today. :)

DeleteWe are almost always late! I can totally relate. Our ward split up about a month ago, and we now have to wake up at like 6:30! I think church starts at like 7:00 or 8:00! So, every Sunday we are always in a big rush!

ReplyDeleteLately I've been thinking a lot about prayer. A couple of my friends were talking about how they had prayed for some things and the answers came in ways that they wouldn't have expected them to but their prayers were still answered. That just really hit me. And so I decided to try it out.
So, as many of you have heard, we had region competition this past weekend. I was doing a scene with Trev and our scenes can only be three to six minutes long. Well, as of two weeks ago, our scene was over 9 minutes long. So we got our scene cut and then it was just barely under 6 minutes and that was with us just rushing through our lines without many pauses. It was really scary. That is not a place you want to be in with your competition piece. So the night before region I prayed with all that was in me that Trev and I would somehow be able to get our scene under six minutes and that we wouldn't get disqualified. The next day, region, I told one of my coaches what was happening and she cut our scene again. Funny, she only cut lines that were mine; I had most of the lines. So now with the new cuts, we would have a lot more time and we could take some effective pauses in our scene. We were under six minutes in all our rounds, we made it to the trophy rounds, we tied for 4th place overall, and we qualified for State. God likes to through in some of those extra things in sometimes :). I know that God listens to us when we pray, and He will answer us but maybe not in the way we want or expect Him to. But He will answer. And we have to be watching for those little things that may seem normal and recognize His hand in our lives.
I whole heartedly agree. God cares about the tiny things like regionals and money and friends and all the weird things because we care about them and He loves us so much.
DeleteToday before class at church someone was writing pi on the board. She was in the hundreds, and she doesn't even hold the record. Me and another homeschooled were confused why they bothered to take the time to memorize that much of pi, but we found out the in third school the person with the record doesn't need to do most of the assignments. WHAT! Free grades for memorizing pi! I want in. Can we do this Sister Jackson? XD I'm just kidding.
ReplyDeleteYeah, pie is pretty cool. (What does XD mean?)

ReplyDeleteToday was fun. We woke up in Saint George and got ready for church, are breakfast and went to the nearest church building on the map just planning to go to a 10 am sacrament meeting. Well turns out the "church building" we were planning on going to was an old folks home. We also find out that all the other church's in the area only have 9 and 11 sacrament meetings. We decide we'll go to a ward in Mesquite at 11 instead. We're on track to get there right at 11 and we get remember time zones! Now it's 9 again so we end up going to a ward in Las Vegas at 11 and everything works out. Church was great, get back into the car, start driving on the road to Cali and we run into major traffic. We then remember that there is always traffic on Sunday evenings because everyone is coming back gambling! After about an hour it's all better but was still really bad for a second there.
Rough life on the road. Have an excellent trip!

ReplyDeleteThe living Christ. We were talking about it today in class. Have you ever just thought about that before? The living Christ. We have a God and a Savior, of flesh and bone. A living Christ. I living God. A living Lord. A living Savior. We don’t worship a fantasy, we worship a physical being. We don’t worship a long dead myth, we worship the Lord of all, the conqueror of death. We have a living, breathing, solid, real, Christ. A Christ. The living Christ. Somehow, that makes me feel more important, that I am accounted for by a living, all powerful, human being. One who has been through what I have been through. One who loves me without end, unconditionally. And I think that’s pretty great.
I loved reading this! I totally agree, knowing that Heavenly Father and Jesus are real and love us SO much!
DeleteSo as mentioned on my last post on day 12 I went to spring city. The way home felt like 10 minutes because I was asleep the hole time. When we got home I went down stairs to see my brand new room! It was so cool my mom is so awsome to do that for !e and my sister. My sister and I are now sharing a room because my older sister is moving... Well just moved in she just barely got here. ReplyDeleteSunday School: I'm not even sure I remember what the topic of the lesson was. My Sunday School teacher is quite interesting, he makes a us think a lot by asking unique questions and will let us know his opinion on certain topics, he's not afraid to speak his mind. We got a bit off topic because everyone was tired due to daylight savings and not excited about returning to school, after a week off. One girl in my class, had gotten her wisdom teeth out on Friday,so she was still on medicine, with swollen cheeks, that took a new spin on class. . . It was one of those days were no one really payed attention or those of us who did weren't really sure what was happening, we were all so distracted. Sunday School is always an adventure and most of the time I learn something new, I guess it was just one of those off days, haha, good times. ;)
I have those types of Sunday school lessons! It is fun to see how even though we live in different places the same things still happen! Thanks for sharing! :)
DeleteSorry I didn't post on Sunday I wasn't supposed to gtg class time
ReplyDeleteToday I taught primary. I taught the eight year olds. I feel so bad because I honestly forgot until I started driving to church. The lesson was on Abinadi. My initial response was GREAT! A STORY I KNOW! As I started the lesson I began to realize there was more to the story than I had originally thought. The primary manual took the story on a different angle than I would have. Instead of just looking at how we should stand strong, in adversity, like Abinadi, it talked about repentance and missionary work. Both of which are part of the story but aren't what I thought of when I read the topic. It was just a good reminder that even if we think we know a gospel topic or story, we really don't. There is always more to learn.
ReplyDeleteTeaching a lesson gets you to lean more about it, and learn new stuff. Happens to me all the time. I don't remember the exact percentage, but it was around 75% of the stuff you teach you remember. Reading and listening was around 20%, I think.
DeleteWhen I woke up to go to church, I thought I was going to be early, but instead, because of stupid daylight savings, I was 25 minutes late.. Day light savings is so dumb. What is the point of it anyways??
ReplyDeleteOh no! I was late to church yesterday too! I feel ya. :)
DeleteI watch Jake Wilkinson as he breaks the bread for the sacrament. He’s on the boy’s basketball team, and they had won the state championship game just last night. He’s a year younger than me, and I’ve known him since I moved here 9 years ago, so he’s like a brother to me. I’m so proud of him, not just because he won the ‘ship. He had decided to come to church, even though he had gotten home just an hour before church started. He had probably gotten a total of 4 hours of sleep, but he didn’t complain. He wanted to come to church and partake of the sacrament. I know that I as well as others, members and nonmembers, have looked on his example with admiration.
ReplyDeleteThis slice is very inspiring. Thank you for sharing!

ReplyDeleteI love the spirit that is in my home on Sundays. It always seems that there is a little extra peace and love in our house. In my house we aren’t allowed to be on any type of electronics and we all have to be out in the same room as a family. During this time we usually talk or play board games or card games. It is so much time to just disconnect from the world and technology and to reconnect as a family.
Today in young women's we had a combined lesson because one of our leaders went to hear Bonnie L. Oscarson (the general young women's president) speak and waved to tell us about it. After sister Oscarson spoke our leader went up to talk to her, sister Oscarson looked through our young woman's role and asked our leader about each one of us. Afterwards she told our leader that for the next two weeks she would pray for the young women in our ward and that she'd tell the general authorities about our ward. I thought that was super cool!

ReplyDeleteIn Young Women, we talked about forgiveness. We read in Alma, where Alma the younger talked about how terrible he felt about his wrongdoings, but how wonderful he felt when he was forgiven and cleansed. On the table was a picture of the Savior healing a blind man, and the teacher told us tearfully that just as the Savior can heal our physical ailments, He can cleanse us of our wrongdoings.

I've realized I don't it when people will talk about someone they like and all they talk about is how cute they are. You don't hear them say anything about who they actually are, like there personality or how nice they are or how they helped someone in the hall. I want you to think about the person you like and tell me if you like them for their looks or money, or is it because of who they actually are.

ReplyDeleteOn Guam, we don't have birds who build nests on our back porch, we have Mud Daubers, or as my sister puts it, "Mud Gobbers". What they do is collect all the dirt they can find, mix it with a special concoction made from their saliva that is used in the making of their home, find an appropriate place to start building, and then with one grain at a time, build their house to completion. Yesterday, we spotted one building on the window sill of our back porch. By accident, when we opened the window, the nest was destroyed. Luckily, the Mud Dauber was not inside but was somewhere else at that time. However, when the Dauber came back, it seemed almost confused as to what happened to its place of residence. We knew its work had been destroyed, but the insect kept looking over the same spot as if it had missed it. When it left, I doubted it would come back, for there was nothing to come back to. But surprisingly, it did return, and with it new materials to re-start building its nest again. Now, I don't know why it came back either than it acting upon instinct or such, but if a comparison is to be drawn, I would say life is a series of building, reshaping, and strengthening of certain things that will help us establish a home for the eternities to come. Though we be left with nothing, if we start over and anew continuously, we will ultimately come to the point where no strengthening is necessary, for we will already have become the best we can be. If we expect life to go exactly the way we want, then we shall be disappointed. But if we make a goal and 'endure to the end', then we shall thank ourselves in the future for doing so when we have a comfortable home built for ourselves.
Nice connection with the bird that had its home destroyed. With enduring with the end. Nice Post! ~ Chris

ReplyDeleteWe went Kayaking recently at Kahana River. We put our kayaks in the water, we rowed our kayaks down the stream. It opened to the ocean, then we had a picnic on the beach. Down the river we saw a rope swing that was attached to a tree. My dad and me swung from the giant tree over and over, until we got bored. Then we kept on going down the stream and it was very narrow with big sticks to sink our kayaks we kept on going then we were at the end of the river then we turned around, then we had a happy afternoon when we got home.
That sounds like so much fun. I really like the outdoors.

Day one on trek. We arrive and the journey commences. We travel several miles until we reach camp. When we finally get food, we are only given a stale biscuit and chicken broth. I tried to remain positive, but I knew that amount would be completely insufficient for the young men. This caused me to be angry with the leaders for taking the trek too literally. Despite all this we set up for camp only to be driven out by “mobs” with only 15 minutes to pack up. What fallowed was called the miracle mile. During this mile we faced challenges of our belongings falling out of the cart, our young men struggled with their hunger, and I hit into so many rocks my toes were bruised and throbbing with pain. This was a silent trek, so not a word was spoken, and they had signs along the way explaining why all the sacrifices were worth it to the pioneers. When we arrived there was peace, the spirit, the feeling of accomplishment, and food! My frustrations had vanished and the pain endured was worth it.

DeleteMany of us don't understand how serious a situation is until we ourselves have endured it. We hear about the pioneers being driven by mobs and walking for miles, but we don't truly feel what they felt until we go through their experience first-hand. ReplyDeleteI got to hang out with my cousin and aunt. It was super fun. We hadn't seen each other since before Christmas. We went to the mall and we shopped and it was so much fun. I got a gyro for lunch, I love gyros! Then we went to get ice cream, my ice cream cone was so huge and so delicious. After that we stood in the parking lot for like 45 minutes talking, it was great. I love hanging out with my family.
On the 20th of March, I sang with a sever other Youth in my ward for Easter. (because of General Conference, Fast Sunday had been moved to a week earlier, moving the program as well) We sang "Beautiful Savior". The whole time, my stage fright was telling me to run away and hide, but I pushed it down and only payed attention to the Sister who was conducting. Let's just say I don't want to be in Choir. I was glad I sang though, we had been practicing for weeks, and I think it sounded amazing when the whole group sang together. Another Youth in the ward even played her flute for the song!
ReplyDeletetoday was good. just lots of work and i worked on some music as well.
ReplyDeleteA couple years ago on the way home from youth conference we were in a car accident. A deer jumped out into the road and totaled our car. We happened to be in Kansas, in the middle of nowhere. We were stuck in the nearest town (Kinsley, Kansas) for a few days with not a lot of food or anything to do. It wasn't a fun situation but were were able to meet the owner of the motel we stayed at, and introduced her to the church. It's amazing how the Lord can turn a bad situation into a good one.
