Slice of Life: DAY 15

Sister Jackson's Slice:

The promise of fireside chats in the backyard have me excited for summer. Burning marshmallows and doing Dutch oven chicken are what summer nights were made for. Seeing the stars on a clear warm night that's just chilly enough to need the fire and possibly a blanket, children playing nightgames with flashlights in the park behind the house, wishing for the day to linger: these are the things that make summer something to long for. Summer is coming.

Mine is a simple mind: When I see trees wave in the wind, I wave back; when I drop something, I make sure to pick it up so others don't have to. It is simple and crafted in the same manner as others, and yet it is unique and special. Only my mind contains exactly what I feel, what I've experienced, what I've accomplished, and what I lack. Only I know what truly makes me happy or sad, and only I know the true definition of my thoughts. That which rests in its bounds will certainly help me in my future, be it beneficial or degrading, for either shall be used in the decisions I make in my life to come because of the consequences each of them shall impress upon me.
But as I said before, my mind is simple, simple in the mind that is mine.

    1. I think about this a lot actually. My set of experiences, challenges, and joys are unique to myself. When people say that no one ever knows how they feel, I think they are being dramatic. Now I've come to realize that those feelings are affected by every other experience they have had. For me, the struggle comes when I can't adequately express my joy to others, but then I know that Christ has felt everything that I have. Together we can sorrow or rejoice with the same understanding.

    2. Yes, that's right. We would think ourselves to be unique and alone in this world, and yet we sometimes are completely ignorant to the fact that Christ in certainty has felt all we have endured, and suffered the pains we had thought to only be felt by us. We both can live life together, to be strong one with another. Thanks for the comment!

  2. You know that time when you just sit in bed wondering what to do with your life? That's me right now. Most of my after school plans have exploded and it's not good. I'm hoping to become an EMT this summer so I can make some cash and buy a booth at comic to sell stuff. Hopefully I can do that and make some serious money, but then there's other stuff. Like how am I supposed to publish my book when it's done? Self publish? Have a company publish it? I don't know. I really honestly don't know, and it can be stressful. But that's in the future and right now I'm stuck in France unable to do anything about it. :P

One of the down sides of going on vacation in a different time zone is talking to friends or family. You're always turned around about when school gets out and when you can talk because you are an hour(s) ahead or an hour(s) behind! I guess I should just get over it. I'm lucky I can contact friends and family in other states. I mean when you think about it, we can all with the touch of a button can see each other's faces even though we might be hundreds or maybe thousands of miles away. The technology we have at our fingertips is simply astonishing!

  5. Part 1: The Incident
I inhaled and sniffed the air. Was that smoke I smelled? I walked toward the smell. “Dad oh no!” I cried. The scene before me was very alarming and I didn’t know what else to say. Moments later the fire alarm went off. Something on top of the stove was in flames!
    Part 2: The Reason
I was starting some water on to boil and, I put the water on the back burner but accidently turned on the front burner. Though it just so happened that my sister had been using some eggs and left them on the front burner. I forgot to make sure the stove was clear and thus the egg carton caught on fire. Well it was an interesting day to say then VERY least.

As I rummaged around in my garage, I went to to the picture in my mind of what I wanted my project to look like. I thought about what I needed and then started getting supplies. Duct tape, political signs, rope netting straps, and some nuts and bolts all went on the work table. I started assembly on my project. Dangitt! the nuts don't fit the bolts. Back to the spare bucket to find the right ones. Aha, I found them! I start my taping the signs together, drilling holes in them, then securing the straps with the nuts and bolts. At last, after, oh, about three minutes of work, i'd made it. The perfect riot shield for airsoft. Now I just have to spray paint it camo. The best thing about it was the fact that it was 100% Free!

The part that I am most excited about however, is the dancing! I LOVE DANCING!!! Waltz, Swing, Cha-cha, Samba etc. Dancing just has a way of making me happy. I love having a partner who knows what he's doing. Under-arm turns, window turns... any type of spinning is SO much fun! Also, there is a step/move in Swing dance called the "Windmill" and it is amazing! So yeah: dressing up, having a partner, and dancing with them is such a blast. "Hope is never lost." ~Jeffrey R. Holland
This statement is short and yet very powerful. Even when we are at our lowest points, when we fill we are at the bottom of the pit and it is to deep for anyone to be able to reach us, there is no pit too deep that the Savior can't reach down to lift you up. When you feel your faith is lost, look up to the Savior and he will be there to lift you up, dust you off and put you on the right path again. There have been times when I felt like giving up, like there was no hope and I should just quit. When these doubts creepy into my mind, I am quickly reminded that I have a Father in Heaven, who loves me and is always watching out for me. He doesn't like it when I'm up happy and sad, he wants me to know that I have importance and worth and that I can do anything if I put my faith and trust in Christ. The same goes for you! You are important, you have worth, you were sent here to be on the earth at this time and for a purpose. Never forget who you really are, no matter what anyone else says or does. As long as you know who you are, it doesn't matter what those around you think.

Aching too bad to scream, too angry to cry, I was never going to fall asleep. The changing red minutes on my desk went slower and slower every moment, each denying me the oblivion that sleep offered. A discarded book by my bed was full of hollow words, unable to bury me for once. My earphones played meaningless notes into deaf ears, unable to relax my shaking thoughts, my clenched body. No thought soothed the anger; no action calmed the stress; no length of time softened the sadness. I yanked off the hot, tangled blankets, pacing fast and soft across the floor before striding to the window, pulling up the blinds. A strong, invisible wind was flying through the big oak tree’s night-blackened foliage. Smoky gray clouds swallowed the whole sky, lit by the lights of the city. The image of moving tree branches, sharp black silhouettes against the burnt clouds struck me strangely. Opening my second-story window quietly, I crawled out onto the ledge, and curled up against the still house. It was easier to dissipate myself, like mist; the wind blew away all my thoughts, and my eyes filled with the sight of a tree dancing, slow and alone, against the night sky.
Finally, shivering, in danger of falling asleep on the roof, I clambered back inside, and fell into sleep, empty with the borrowed peace of the night.

    2. To clarify: I sliced this because of something Sister Jackson said about us not always needing to do these perfect, sunshine-and-roses-my-life-is-perfect slices. Each of us have streaks of bitterness, or negativity in our life's pie, and pretending that our pie is completely sweet throughout is dishonest in my mind. I chose to slice this because I felt like feeling these emotions is an honest part of life. If I worried anyone, I'm sorry - I'm not an emotional mess. This happened over a year ago, and I'm totally over what made me so mad/stressed/sad. I'm good now.

    3. Emma! You have a way with words that is so magnificent. I love the way you described everything in your room from the hollow words and your deaf ears. I can totally relate to how you feel. In one of my New York homes the screen fell out of my window and I was able to climb out onto the roof and just think. Me myself and I.

I sat slumped in my seat in my seminary class at 6 in the morning. "Seminary is much too early!" I declared aloud with sleepy eyes. Getting up early was a routine I had established. I'm a morning person, so it all worked out. However, Daylight Savings has messed with my internal and literal clock. I was about to groan internally, again, when I came to the realization that the lesson was for me. By Providence, the lesson in seminary today was about relying on God, not on your own physical strength. Sheepishly I said a silent prayer of gratitude, and changed my perception on the morning.

I really like this message. God is always watching you, and is concerned just as much with your concerns as you yourself. If you act upon faith, he will bless you with an answer and a feeling of comfort. Just do what needs to be done to the best of your ability, and God will make sure to fill the rest up as well as commend you on what you have accomplished.

Chorus) I'm always with you don't worry I'm always there for you, carry on carry on with your life I'm always with you.
V2) I don't want to see you with tears on your face I don't want to see the tears on your pillow, carry on with your life.
Chorus) I'm always with you don't worry I'm always there for you, carry on carry on with your life I'm always with you.
V3) take care of our kids don't tell them I'm gone don't lie please don't lie, don't tell them you'll never see me again because.
Chorus) I'm always with you don't worry I'm always there for you, carry on carry on with your life, I'm always with you.
V4) please don't tell yourself I'm gone, remember me in a smile, but if you remember me in tears doing remember me at all.
Chorus) I'm always with you don't worry I'm there for you, carry on carry on with your life I'm always with you.

  13. Orlando, Dominican Republic, Hawaii?!? All in one year?!? Yes! Were going all tropical this year! Orlando is for a business trip for my dad’s office but we are going to go to Disney World, Universal Studios, and we might even go to the Florida Keys and go on a fan boat to see some alligators! And this is end of April right after school ends! Then in June we go to DR! It’s a humanitarian trip for our family reunion! We get to stay in this all-inclusive resort with a pool for every villa! 4 days we will do humanitarian work and I will probably play with the kids a little. I might even bring my ukulele and play for them. I think this will be a good learning experience for me. Then were off to Hawaii in October right after Youth Conference. I’ve been to Hawaii before but not the big island! This trip is actually because were doing a Ragnar. It’s a 200+ mile relay that we do with a team of 12. You never stop. We run through the night even. Sleeping in vans when it’s not our turn. And it’s on my birthday! Yay! What a great way to spend your birthday (I’ve had worse). We will do some sight seeing while were in Hawaii while were there. So this year is going to be so much fun! I might even go to Chicago this summer! My sister will be living there for a couple months and we want to visit her. My mom is from Chicago so it will be fun to go back! Bring it on 2016!

  16. My heart dropped into my stomach. No... I inwardly groaned. This was not good. This was not fair. Agh! I had tried so hard to make sure this wouldn't happen. I scanned through the play again, reading the character's lines. Of course the Mormon girl gets assigned to read the part with more foul language than the entire rest of the book. I sighed. I mustered my courage. I wasn't sure what the reactions would be but I had to do this. I had to read it for my grade but that didn't mean I had to read those words.
My thirty second, inward battle came to a close as I was called on. I offered a silent prayer for courage and began. The first word was a swear, three words later they took the Lord's name in vain, I didn’t say either of them. I filled in the gaps with a lot of oh my gosh, goodness gracious, oh my goodness, holy cow, dang it and anything else I could think of that was clean and good. My face grew warm as the class turned to deadly quiet. This was not normal.
Everyone knew what I was doing. They had the text in their hand. They knew I was reading it wrong. I made it to the last word and paused. It was a swear but I wasn't sure how to fill in the gap. There was nothing good to put there and it was honestly unnecessary to the rest of the sentence. I shut my book and leaned back in my seat. My heart beat like I'd just run a marathon. The girl assigned to read next looked at me, puzzled for three seconds, five seconds. "Are you going to finish?" Before I could open my mouth with some sort of response, a girl in the front rolled her eyes. I wasn't very good friends with her. We talked sometimes. We had mutual friends. I barely knew her and she barely knew me.
"She's Mormon, duh! She’d never say stuff like that." She said this all dismissively, as if it was obvious, as if everyone should already know this. I glanced around at the class. No laughter, a few dismissive shrugs and the teacher didn’t even comment. I felt a warm pressure in my stomach. The class moved on but my thoughts stayed pressed into that moment.
What if I hadn’t changed the words? What if I had read them? Not only would I know and God know but those kids would have known. They would see me throwing away my beliefs and what would that make me, in their eyes, then?

Just by your example, previous to this incident, the girl in your class knew you were, "Mormon" and you wouldn't say those words. I'm so glad you were able to choose the right and share this experience with us. You never cease to amaze me, McKenzie! I agree with Isabelle. It was hard to do in the making, yet you persisted and finished until the end. You represented what a true Mormon should be, and not one that simply goes under the name 'follower of Christ'. If you would have given into peer pressure, that would have shown you fear Man more than God, and that would result in future instances to come concerning disregarding standards to appeal to the rest of the world. The world is not at the same level of cleanness or righteousness, and you did the right thing in not lowering yourself to their level, but remaining where you were whilst uplifting those others who were impressed by your action, and took account of your example. Good Job!

  20. On sunday I was sitting in sacrament meeting next to my 10 year old brother. While I was trying not to fall asleep my brother had his scriptures out and was writing his testimony in his scriptures. I couldn't stop myself from reading it and he didn't seem to care so here is part of his testimony "Remember you are a son of our eternal father and that he loves you more than anything on the earth except other people. Don't let Satan in you heart so it won't harden, instead kick him in his unholy rear and send him flying to his unheavenly home." He then had a story about how Satan is a fisherman and we are a fish and how we shouldn't take Satan's bait and follow him. He has a stronger testimony than me and to see how much he believed what he was saying and how much faith he has in this gospel at 10 is amazing! I am so proud to call him my brother and I hope he will continue to keep that faith through out his life.

  21. Smiling, its more than you think. It is a symbol of hope, happiness, and joy. But it's also an expression of love and kindness towards others. I know it doesn't seem like much but it means more to people than you could ever know. Everywhere I go I feel like I'm constantly smiling at people I do it because it's an easy thing to do and simply because I am happy. I want to be able to show my kindness towards others through smiling. It's like the gospel I want to share it with others so they can feel the wonderful spirit and the joy it brings to one's life. Smiling makes the world a better place. I remember when I was younger I was always told by my mom "always remember to smile." Even if I didn't want to smile I at least faked it till I made it. A lot of people say “oh I have a best-friend and we've known each other pretty much our how life's!” I myself can't say that but I sure can say that I have been able to build good memories with my best-friend! I think that it is most memories is better than years! When I needed my best-friend and was sad she was there! When I was mad she listened, when I told jokes even if they weren't so funny she laughed that would always help me. Me and her are actually having a book of Mormon challenge! Even if I can't see her everyday I know that she will always be my best-friend!

Sometimes it's crazy lines, jagged, curved, squiggles, others it's puppies, Harry Potter jazz, flowers, mountains, rivers, skies, people anything! I love doodles.

How would you describe a good day? In my own words I'd say a humble and productive one...
Today has been one of those days. This morning I decided to fast for some people friends that were on my mind. Just give me time in the morning to wake up my little sister, which wasn't that bad. Sometimes it's a challenge but today was encouraging and became a bonding time with her.
At school I was able to reach out to those who are little quiet and have the courage to say hi to those people too. I also got some things off of my chest and became closer to my friend, Maddie.
I got to go to the Timpanogus Temple today which was completely empty. I've gone weekly and it was fun to have them notice that Gabe and Sergio weren't there and that they would even recognize us. I read my scriptures while I waited for mom to come pick me up and that's when I got home I was at peace and the music was on. I got a bunch of my clean laundry and slipped on some leggings and a baggy shirt to keep me warm while I made my bed completely over because the sheets and bedding were wetted by my little brother last week. That might not seem the best but for me I love to clean and organize. Then my mom made some homemade cupcakes and that was great. I finished most of my homework and tonight we get to have dinner prepared for us by chef. Plus dad and I are going to be taking on a daddy daughter date to do some sunset photography. I have some chores to do that make me feel significant so I'm gonna go do those now; have a happy day!

For the month of March, my friend and I have been going off sugar. We are doing it to see how long we can last, and because I had a big dance performance this month and I dance better when I am not loaded up with sugar. Although I really love healthy stuff like fruits and vegetables, it is super hard for me! I have always wondered how people who cannot have sugar because of things like diabetes do it, because I am only fifteen days into the month and am struggling!

    1. You can do it, Abbey! I have a friend who is going off sugar, too. I don't know how long he's doing it, but the only thing he's been eating is mints. He claims that pineapple and grape flavored life saver candies are mints, too, and says they turn into sugary candy when we put them in the cotton candy machine. It's hard, but keep reminders available and you can do it!

  30. I Love to Garden! This year I Planted during really early spring when it still occasionally freezes, so I planted my plants inside for the beginning, and boy are plants just amazing! Some of theses seeds are so small that it's hard to keep track of how many seeds you are putting in the soil, yet they still grow into these large plants. Some plants will die off during the winter and come back year after year, for as long as they can stay doing so! Others can be cut down to there stalks, and still grow up again to become big strong plants! I hope that I can make some new editions to my garden this year like exotic flowers and Venus flytraps! I personally love plants and they are amazing things even though they can't do the things we can!

Some days my mind feels so overflowing with ideas that no canyon could contain them, while on days like today my mind is a void for meaning to place into words.
I think often we feel voids are large and quite difficult to pass, yet when considered thoughtfully some of the voids help us to ease a moment in time where thoughts aren't crowding our minds internal view.
Funny how something so simple as no notion of what to write can become a learning and thought provoking experience for both writer and reader.

It was blowing something outside our house with such great strength that it had made such a loud and distracting noise that kept me from falling asleep. I could hear my parents walking around the house looking for the cause of the sound. My mom assumed that it was just a tree branch hitting up against our house and my dad had assumed it was the wooden gate in the back door that was being blown open and closed, open and closed. We still never figured out what the bewildering sound was.

I used to not like peanut butter at all. I could eat it when it was in things like cookies and ice cream, but by itself? Forget it! I didn't even like your classic peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Yuck! Then, last year, in my Concurrent Enrollment nutrition class, we were challenged to do something healthy that we had never really done before whether it was something we were going to give up or something new we were going to eat. I decided that I was going to eat a stick of celery everyday. But I couldn't just eat it plain. So I went against all my principles and put peanut butter on it. But I couldn't do just peanut butter and celery either. So I also decided to do the whole "ants on a log" thing- celery with honey, peanut butter, and raisins on top. And that did it. Now, I love peanut butter. I eat it with celery, apples, and I even eat it plain. But given the choice, my first pick of ice cream will always be something without peanut butter in it.

So, on the topic of marshmallows my varsity scout troop went on a camp out recently, and since nearly all of us have about all of the marit badges that we need for eagle we tend to just have fun. Anyways the deacons were going on a hike, so the teachers all stayed. We did a few things, but we discovered that marshmallows make a lot of stuff taste better. We had marshmallow pringles, meat sandwiches, bugles, bacon wrapped marshmallows, ect. I think we have started a tradition of combining foods with marshmallows, so this week we might have marshmallow sardine achove pizza on. I think the marshmallow pringles were the best; sweet & salty. I didn't try and bacon marshmallows though.

If you are thinking that is weird, speak to my brother. One of his funniest stories was when he started running in his sleep. He sleepwalked out of his room, and he walked into my moms room. He then went over next to her and started jogging in place! He was running for a long time, and that woke up my mom. She then asked my brother what he was doing. He then answered saying "I'm getting healthy by running!" She freaked and a long time later, he finally went back to bed.

Minecraft. I don’t see why tons of people shame this game. They think it is boring, and just for kids. Before I move on I want to state that I don’t want rants that shooting games are better or Minecraft is boring. Thank you. I have been through many games, at least all the quality games that aren’t violet. Minecraft is a simple game it doesn’t have a story line. That is why most people think it’s boring because they don’t have a good enough imagination. In a Minecraft world the diameter of a world is six million blocks enough room to build for a few years. There is about 121 blocks to build with, you can’t even measure the combinations. You can make games, houses, everything in the world but better. Microsoft bought it for two and half billion. On YouTube it has forty-seven billion views in total. People get bored because they are on single player, on multiplayer it is a different game it’s like your social media with games and cool things to do. Next time you shame on Minecraft refer to this.

My car was perfect. Meticulously cut, sleek and fast. My Bumpa and uncle Jon are experts in pinewood derby cars. We waited it heavier than usual, there are no rules in Young Women activities. We used top notch wheels for maximum speed, and we coated the inside with graphite to make them turn smoothly. It faded from a bright orange in the back to a deep, speckled blue in the front. We turned one front wheel up just slightly so it rides on three wheel, hence decreasing the traction. Mine, of course, was the only car that wasn’t pink or covered in sparkles. I didn’t win because one girl had a freaking 6 lb car. I got 3rd place though. Pretty proud of that.

Waking up to snow I felt a thrill.
The ground was covered, making the scene look like a winter wonderland.
After my first class, I was anxious to go outside.
I jumped up and called my brother, telling him to get ready.
I pulled on my snow shoes and grabbed my coat. Pulling on gloves and a hat I was ready to go outside.
Marcus came and together we went out.
He made snowballs and threw it at things, a tree, my back, the window.
I ran and laughed when my dog, Zoey, barked and chased after me.
I played with my dog, chasing her and throwing snow on her fur.
Then my brother threw a snowball at her.
She jumped as though catching a ball and when it sailed over her head, she followed it.
It disappeared in the snow and Zoey looked confused as her ball vanished.
He threw another one, this time calling her name.
She jumped after each snowball he threw, trying to catch it.
I threw on and she went after it.
I threw another one and this time she was lucky.
She grabbed it and it broke apart in her mouth.
It was with a sigh I went inside to go watch my other classes.

Young men, never underestimate yourselves or your importance. Today we had a woman’s pull on trek. We went through a river and up a hill, and we struggled the whole way. We discovered our own strength and were reminded how mush we appreciate yours. Even when the young men were not allowed to push, they encouraged us as we went. We were not alone. Then as soon as the were permitted they jumped right in and helped lift our burden. Thank you. I don’t care if it is cheesy to say that. You may have not been there, but you do more then you realize wherever you are. We never say thank you enough.

As I have been pondering lately the impact of music in my life, I got to thinking about the question we are all asked the question at some point in our lives: “If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you take?” Well, my answer is this: I would take my new, gorgeous violin. Oh, how wonderful it is! I would also somehow transport an endless supply of violin music because I would never run out of things to do. Ever. I suppose I would need something to sustain life, so I would ask for an eternal chocolate fountain with an unlimited supply of fresh fruit. That would be amazing. Indescribably amazing.

  50. My nails are really short. Like, REALLY short. I have been biting my nails for almost 2 years now. It has become a very bad habit of mine. Sometimes, i=I bite them too short and they bleed. I would say other ways I bite them, but it makes my mom cringe, and some of you might, too. I have tried yucky tasting nail polish. I got used to that. I have tried fake nails. I chewed those up. Biting your nails can lead to dental problems and serious infections (it is also nearly IMPOSSIBLE to pick up playing cards...). But the thing that grosses me out is if I continue to bite my nails, a certain thing, let alone WORD, will happen. Puss. It grosses me out. I don't even like talking about it. I love to cook, especially when it is for me. My favorite thing to cook is burgers. I used to struggle and my burgers would be over cooked and dry but I’ve recently figure out the way to make perfect burgers. Now that I can make perfect burgers I keep adding to them. Every time I cook them I keep adding to them and making them even more perfect. I made a burger today and I think I maxed out. Sometimes bigger isn’t better. So I made two juicy burgers with salt, pepper and basil flakes and grilled onions, an egg, cheese, pickles, lettuce, ketchup, mustard, and mayo. This thing was huge! And it tasted heavenly up until I got half way through it. Even though I was full I pushed through and finished this beauty but now I feel like a pig. I feel like a slug. I learned that there is a happy medium because when you keep pushing it and pushing it to have more and more stuff it isn’t good. This applies to much more than just a burger. It applies to life.

We went back to our normal classes, in this case I had math. When I walked in I saw Sister Durfee writing pi out, she had probably gone at least 100 decimal places out. She then asked some other students to write on the board, while she read them out loud to them. Then she stopped and stared at us the said, "What boy has good handwriting?" the previous people who did it were girls. The boy did a line then we had our math lesson. After we did the lesson, She brought 3 different pies out: Chocolate, pumpkin, and apple. I picked apple because it looked the yummiest, which more than half the class did the same also. It was the best pie day, and the best pi day too.
