Slice of Life: DAY 16 YOU'RE HALF WAY THERE
Sister Jackson's Slice:
Big League Chew. Penny candies. Nickel gum. Orange Tic Tacs. Slurpees. These are the things I'd save up my money for when I was a kid.
My brothers and I would scrounge up change and make the trek down Owens to Nellis to the corner 7-Eleven, crossing the superhighway of a road that Nellis always has been (or so it seemed to my little girl self). We would load up on treats just enough to give us the strength to make it back home all sugared up ready for another row in the mud or a dirt clod fight.
Leave your slice in the comments below and make a reply to others!
Happy slicing!

ReplyDeleteThat doesn't count bro
DeleteI explained yesterday that my varsity troop tends to do random merit badges, and we have been working on the chess merit badge lately. We have been doing this for a while because we like to play it more than explain it, so I have been playing a lot of chess recently. We are even going to have a movie night were we finish it off, and play it most likely this Friday. We did a chess tournament, and I won through a lot of technicalities. It was the first time playing for a lot of us, so it wasn't that professional. Also, I believe I said once that we have about 20 scouts in our troop, but I was wrong. We have closer to 30 scouts.
ReplyDeleteWhat about this one Elise Day? xD
DeleteHaha, okay that counts NOW. :p That's so cool that you're playing chess for a merit badge! Do you like playing chess then?
DeleteYep, I'm still not that good at it though. xD
DeleteI still don't get this XD jazz. What happened to the good ole' :)
Delete:) is smiling. xD is laughing.
DeleteI have the chess merit badge. It was my 3rd one I got. Nice Post! ~Chris Cox DE P4.
DeleteTO BE OR NOT TO BE A JOURNALIST... THAT IS THE QUESTION
ReplyDeleteI remember about two or three years ago I really wanted to be a journalist. I made my own family newspaper called: “Sonic News.” I gave my little siblings notepads so that they could help me find stories to write about, and I told them I’d pay them a quarter for every story. I would write a season theme on the second page, and the cover page had pictures on it of people in my family and nature pictures that went with the season. It really looked more like a magazine than anything else. Looking back on that cute little memory-filled dream of mine makes me want to start doing something like that again but more improved, (obviously.) I think it would be really fun to start a school newspaper to help everyone know what’s going on! Maybe call it the: “Warrior Witness” or “Liahona Leaflet,” I don’t know. We could have a section where we list the homework for each class/grade and show upcoming assignments so they remember to study for them. Another section could show upcoming dances and school events, plays/musicals, field trips, competitions etc. Is this just me though? Please give me some feedback if you think that this is a good idea or not!
Yeah, I think that would be a great idea! I like the newspaper names too; what is the story behind the name "Sonic News"? I have some friends that live un Utah, and they do this shopping and trading system. It is pretty cool. One of the daughters sells phones and electronics; while the dad fixes them. That is just a example. They have more jobs. I don't know what she is going to do when her siblings all buy a phone though. She will be out of costumers.vxD
DeleteI did kinda the same thing for my family, I called is the Morris Newspaper.
DeleteI would basically write about what had happened that week.
I even had a column called "Ask Ping" where people could ask my giant panda bear questions.
Lol.
That's cool Ellie! You should do it. ;)
DeleteSpencer Evans (Tx)
DeleteVery well written! Good job! This is another one of life's greatest questions. A family newspaper sounds like fun.
I'd love to run a school newspaper. The Liahona Times or Liahona's Small Plates would be amazing titles.
DeleteThanks guys for all of your comments! D Adams, the story behind: "Sonic News," Is simply that I thought about what to name my paper for a REALY LONG TIME. I don't remember having a big reason for naming it that.
DeleteAlso Sis. Jackson, I do like those titles! Do you think that you could go to the Office with me sometime and ask them about it? I would love it if you could help me to design it if it is an approved idea! We could have a sign up sheet for people who want to be photographers, reporters, journalists etc. This could totally be a extra-corricular thing! Do you think it's something you could put on a collage resume? Please let me know Sister Jackson! I would love to do a school newspaper with you!
I'm not sure what the protocol is for getting an new elective going, but I'm sure we'd need to have everyone who is wanting to participate in it to show interest. And yes, school newspapers are an elective credit that looks great on college resumes. Talk to me about it in person after spring break, and we can see how to get the ball rolling if it's possible.
DeleteYesterday for track we were doing hill sprints and I was doing really well til the pain came. I mean I have never EVER had shin splints like I did yesterday I could barely walk let alone run so I had to toughen up and walk a mile and a half back to the track. Thank God for Epsom Salt though. I almost tripped when I got out of my Epsom Salt bath to go get my clothes because they hurt so much!! But now that I have some sleep and they don't hurt anymore I guess I will go to track today.
ReplyDeleteMy sisters were in track, and they got shin splints all the time.
DeleteAw, man. I know your pain. I have pretty bad shin splints too.
DeleteThat's impressive! Track is not an easy sport. :)

Spring Break is next week!
ReplyDeleteYay!
I need a break so badly. Im soooo stressed. I'll most likely spend my break catching up on any assignments I'm behind in, sleeping and watching Supernatural, haha.
My spring break differs from my siblings's spring break, so I will be home alone most of the times, woohoo!
Rachel Morris
I'm excited too! It's be nice to have a break, though I DO love school. That's nice that you can have the house to yourself for a little while.
DeleteOne. More. Day. Can't do it. Can't make it. No. I need a break. But I do love school, Sister Jackson. I just realllllly need a break.
DeleteI need a break too! No worries.
DeleteI might try watching that :)

ReplyDeleteSisters...What have I done to deserve one? It seems like she is either teasing me or reading a book. My sister loves to read and write books. I love doing stuff with her, but why does she have to be so, well, Emma? This is one of the great questions in life. I'm sure we'll get along perfectly someday.
Haha, sisters ARE pretty awesome... :p I'm the oldest out of four and I have a younger brother and two little sisters. Siblings are SO amazing! Though sometimes there are moments where you just need to be alone. That is so sweet that you wrote you slice about your sister! I bet you're an awesome brother to/for her. :)
DeleteSpencer Evans (TX)
DeleteI try to be!
I agree. I love my sister. She is great, but sometimes she is frusterating. I halfway know your sister (she stayed at my house for a week last year before Youth Conference) and she is pretty cool. Your lucky to have her as a sister.
DeleteMusic feeds the soul. It gives me comfort when I’m down. I love playing my ukulele. The soft ring of the strings as I strum up and down. The sound travels through my whole body, giving me warmth and chills at the same time. I’m transported to another world in an instant. I close my eyes and just listen. Sometimes a tear rolls down or a grin shows on my face. I daydream and fall back on my bed. Music feeds the soul.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh yes! Music is so very powerful! God gave us music to help speak the beauty that words cannot fully express. Music can make you feel so many different emotions just by you listening! That is such a powerful thing. Thank you for your slice bro!
DeleteYes so true! It can explain what I cannot say. Thanks!
DeleteMusic is truly wonderful. My violin has become my companion that I go to for healing, strength, and celebration. These words are so inadequate to express the beauty and depth that music possesses.

ReplyDeleteIn memory of numerous Live chats before, during, or after class and a recent Notebowl conversation, I have written a splendidly rhymacious poem, as follows:
A quick exchange of bantering -
In my head, words springing -
(The humor's in the things we say,
The exaggerated speaking way.)
Over the keys, fingers flying -
Across my face, a smile flashing.
That describes it all right. The chat boxes are crazy and there is usually at least three different conversations going on. Love your slice! It is so true.

Waffles, biscuits, bacon, fries;
Pineapple, apples, carrots, peas,
Cucumbers, broccoli, yogurt, cheese;
Strawberries, oranges, kiwi, coconut,
Chocolate, M&M’s, snickers, donut;
Avocados, bananas, a yummy treat,
All of these are some things that I like to eat.
Oh my goodness Hannah love pretty much everything you said! I would add: Raspberries, Blackberries, Sushi, Raspberry frozen custard, Tres Leches.... There's way more but you get the gist. xD
DeleteChocolate and M&M's are my favorite! :) You have some pretty good taste!
Deletethats really cool I like almost all of those, except I'm allergic to cocanut

DeleteHannah! I may just have to steal this idea because it is just the cutest. Maybe if I did it with friends' names...? Anyway, I thought it was so creative and way cute how it rhymed. Nice slice!
DeleteWOW. You just made my mouth water. I love most of those things! And I would add crepes. Nice Slice.
DeleteWhy does life have to be so busy? I mean I feel like my life is always full of stuff I have to get done. Not necessarily want to get done but more like have to get done. I feel as if I can't have a moment to sit down or take a break I'm always having something in my life that has to get finished or else it'll end up being too late overdo or delayed until tomorrow. Time is very limited, every day we choose to waste it or make something worthwhile out of it is up to us. We may be faced with many trials in life and getting through them can be a hard. But the best part of having a busy life is that you're making use of the time you have now instead of wasting it doing something that is of no importance. Yes, it's great to relax and have time to yourself once and a while. But also having a daily routine helps you stay organized and helps you practice for future events in life. I think we all tend to say "we don't have enough time." But if that's the case make time, if you really care about getting something done make time to get it done. It does take effort and willingness to do it also squeezing it in your schedule may be difficult. But I believe you can accomplish anything if you just try. So fill your life with things to do and instead of wasting your time make time to do it!
ReplyDeleteI have had to learn this lesson about choosing between Good, Better, Best (A talk by Elder Oaks). I would much rather be busy, than have nothing to do. I'm not a person who enjoys laziness, and I think you know what I mean. I'm glad that you enjoy being active :)

ReplyDeleteGUITAR
When I was little, my dad used to play songs on the guitar for me, to help me fall asleep. I was fascinated at his capability to pick up the guitar and play just about anything. We'd have fun making up silly songs together and singing them when ever I could convince dad to play for me(which was quite often, I'm pretty persuasive;)). Now that I'm older, I've turned that fascination into learning how to play the guitar and now I can enjoy it whenever I like. It's amazing how the simplest things can bring the greatest joy.

ReplyDeleteBeing called someone’s best friend for the first time is like receiving an award. You don’t expect it in the moment, but you’ve thought about the possibility. You take upon yourself the great honor, and you look at yourself and others differently. Receiving the award makes you happy, and reminds you that your efforts have not been in vain. In the end, if the friend is true and the award is meaninful, both give you a special kind of self-confidence.

ReplyDeleteToday I go to the doctor to see if my knee is better. I really hope my knee is healed, but I'm not optimistic about it. I am tired of wearing a stupid brace though, it hinders my movement and is uncomfortable. I went to Ballet last night and tried to dance with my brace on, but it did not feel very good. And now today, both my knees hurt! My tendons need to get it together or I'll fire them and hire new ones.
My knee feels the same way. I wear a brace all the time because I tore my ACL jumping on a trampoline a couple of years ago. It hasn't healed completely and is always driving me crazy.
DeleteOh man that sounds really bad, I hope your knee gets to feeling better soon.
DeleteI feel your pain. Both my feet have stress fractures so I can't walk. I totally sympathize and hope you start healing!
DeleteOuch. I hope you feel better soon!
DeleteGlass made my day today. So, I woke up late and was late to science so I was a little grumpy. My 7 year old brother decided to jump in the pool for about 5 seconds because of the icy cold water. He came running in and made contact with the sliding glass door. WAAAMMM!!!! He hit it like a cartoon! I ran to help him up but I couldn't stop laughing, he didn't see it at all, until his face got smashed against it. I know it was wrong to laugh at him, but I'm in a better mood at the expense of his pain.
ReplyDeleteHaha that is hilarious!!!! That made my day too.
DeleteThat is hilarious! I love how you sliced this. I did that once. My sister watched me too. She posted the video on snapchat though...
DeleteSo today while we were resting so we could go to Disneyland tomorrow I decided to finally get some writing done on my book (we have a deadline set to have Part One complete by May, or 100 pages), and writing it I would constantly get writers block. But today? Today the words just flowed and it was wonderful. I got a page and a half done before I had to stop to let my partner review it and to grab some grub. It was nice while it lasted though. Ah well. Guess I'll just go back to planning and editing until I get another moment like that. Hope it comes soon though.
ReplyDeleteThose moments are just great where you can go through day and just do well on everything! I think it is when we have a good attitude that things like to go better!

ReplyDeleteI got it from the Library
It's mine for two whole weeks
I keep it in my book bag
But I keep sneaking peeks
As if to check that it's still there
Because if it weren't I'd shriek
If a book is late you pay a fine
And losing a book is the worst of crimes
I opened the book and in I strode
Now nobody could find me
I'd left my chair, my house, my road
My town and my world behind me
I opened that book and made some friends
I shared their tears and laughter
I followed the road with it's bumps and it's bends
To the Happily Ever After
But then I remember where I got the book
And know that I can not keep it
And with heavy heart and sobs I shook
I want to keep the book GOSH DARN-IT
I had finished that book and out I came
Now anyone could find me
My chair and my world were just the same
But I have a book inside me.
I love that it is great! Books are just so amazing! I love the description you gave!

I can usually withstand weather in the low forties so I don't understand why I feel so much like a popsicle right now. Hopefully I'll get to warm up before I have to step outside into the wind for practice later this afternoon.

ReplyDeleteI take a pencil and sketch a single line across the fresh white paper. One small, insignificant, meaningless line. It sits and waits. I put the pencil to the paper again. Two lines that are useless. Three lines that have no purpose. More lines come, falling on each other, connecting, fitting into place. Suddenly that one small, insignificant line is essential to the big picture. It has a purpose. Without that single meaningless line, the picture would then be meaningless.
“By small and simple things are great things brought to pass” (Alma 37:6).
I love this Nat! Wow. I really like it because sometimes what we do seems small and useless but there is someone watching, forming all the lines into something amazing that we just can't see right now.

ReplyDeleteMusic has always been a big part in my life. My mom has put on the Mormon Tabernacle Choir or some other spiritually uplifting music every Sunday before we go to church ever since I was little. And on Saturdays, she used to put on happy, working music that we'd dance or sing to as we would do our chores. Sometimes, we would even just randomly turn on music and have dancing parties in our living room. We listened to a lot of the tunes that were popular when my parents were in college. Artists like Kool and the Gang, Kenny Loggins, Neil Diamond, and others were a big chunk of what we listened to. I'm so grateful for good music and the positive influence it has in my life.

Have you noticed, looking back, how much you've changed from when you were younger? I remember being a spoiled, entitled, get whatever I want or scream kinda girl. I was dreadful to be around... most times. I feel like a totally different girl! ReplyDeleteI really love this quote because It doesn't matter what challenge or trial you have. It doesn't matter what situation you are in, you can overcome it. I remember hearing the phrase, "God never gives us a challenge he knows we couldn't overcome." He knows us all personally and individually. Our trials may seem unreasonable, but really they are what makes us stronger. We can either chose to learn from it, or chose to give up and complain. Remember, trials are essential to learn and grow.

ReplyDeleteYes, we finally have warmth! I mean it's been sunny and nice but today it was mid to low 70s! So to use that to our advantage my family swam in the pool, went to the beach and swam again! I don't normally get sunburnt but when you've been in Utah for the last six months being completely deprived of vitamin D and then you spend an entire day in the sun without sunscreen then you, without a shadow of a doubt, will get fried. It's all good though, I can take a little burning. I gotta say, It does hurt to lay down on my bed and type this.

ReplyDeleteA few months ago. We went whale watching. First we had to hike a decent sized mountain. More like a hill. It was a 2-mile hike to a lighthouse. I don’t know if I saw a whale or was it driftwood or was it the Loch ness monster no one knows well we don’t live in Scotland but it could happen. We felt the trade winds from the salty sea. It was a good moment to be with family and to get exercise in general.
Today we visited close friends all day. It was really nice to catch up with them over a large pizza some board games, volleyball and Just Dance on the Wii. I love hanging out with them and since we've moved I've really missed them so today was overall amazing!

We raced outside, rushing to the backyard and into the snow.
We grabbed a snowball each and started rolling them in the snow.
They grew larger and larger as we rolled our snowballs up and down.
Chatting, with laughter filling the air.
I felt happiness fill me up.
My sister and brother around me, Zoey rolling in the snow a few feet away.
I was freezing but didn’t care.
We built her, one on top of the other.
Three snowballs, all different sizes.
With them piled on top of each other we started scraping away and shaping it.
We sent Marcus to go get tools.
Darcie and I stood up and looked at the thing we built.
I pointed out what it looked like.
I was already imagining what it was going to look like.
Marcus came back and we each grabbed a tool.
We started hacking and scraping.
I started pointing out the parts that needed working on.
“You’re the artist.” Darcie said.
Slowly our creation came together.
It started snowing then hailing and we still worked at it.
Getting near the end, I grabbed the bucket, pulling out all the stuff we brought to decorate it.
Putting this there and that here, we placed things around.
Finally our creation was finished.
We stood up to admire our work.

It was my dad's birthday today. We had a great time just hanging out together. I love my dad!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you had a great day. Is your dad's name Patrick since he was born on St. Patrick's day. My grandpa was born on St. Patrick's day and his name is Patrick.
DeleteI am so frustrated! I have published everyday since march third but I can't find any of my posts. I have been using a URL. Is that why? I just realized that the only posts that have been posted are the ones I post using my google account.
ReplyDeleteZach, I've read tons of your slices. Are you sure they aren't on here? Make sure you keep the drafts in a doc, and then post them on here, and we can sort it out later.

ReplyDeleteI love basketball. It is awesome. I play basketball with my friends sometimes because I get bored a lot. I shoot close shots and ones that are far away. I love the feeling I get when I sink that extremely long shot. The best part however, is being with my friends in the great outdoors.
I agree Brennan! Basketball is fun! I remember when I went to your house and we played basketball! It was great!

ReplyDeleteI enjoy working out. I like pushing myself and gaining strength and experience. I like when I am sore after the gym (even though it hurts like crazy), It makes me feel good to know that I pushed myself. I like lifting weights and doing cardio. It makes me feel a lot better after I've worked out, even though I'm sore.

ReplyDeleteSaul was chosen among all others to be the King of Israel. He was pleasurable to the eyes of God, and so did good in his sight. But, as soon as he began to place too much confidence and therefore pride in himself, then he began to fall down a slippery slope that he did not return from. At first, he offered a sacrifice to give his men the courage they needed; then, he destroyed all the spoils of the Amalekites except for the sheep and oxen, which he had been commanded to destroy. As soon as his kingdom was taken from him, he sought the life of David, to kill him by thrusting a javelin through him to the wall. How is it that great men fall, like what David and Solomon did later on? At one point, they are praising God and never faltering, and then the next, they forget him, and begin worshiping idols. It is because their feet don't plant themselves in holy places, but keep walking in hopes that they may find something else. They become dissatisfied with the present, and hope to gain even more by adding on only that which temporal happiness can bring. Do not falter, do no faint, for at the end you shall receive your reward.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite hymn is, Abide with me tis eventide. I love this hymn, because I have a really big family, and whenever one of my older siblings would come home from their mission, we would sing this song as a family in sacrament meeting the following week. It always invites the spirit in, and I think of my loving family whenever I hear it.

I have nothing to say except I love this. I can truly feel how much this hymn and your family means to you! That is what writing is about! Displaying emotion! Well done!

After walking for miles on end my company stops. In a place that is clearly not our camp sight. We then journey up and up and up and up a steep mountain. I have someone tell me to inform them when we were close because they were starting to give up hope. Just a few minutes later we were there, and the view was spectacular. We rested and enjoyed the beautiful view.
A flurry of activity occurs in my own room-of-a-time-machine. The moon is high, but the lamp is bright. The cluttered closet is dissected little by little and cleaned up. My nightstand is once more exposed in view. The bookshelf is rearranged as I squish “just one more book” in. Blankets are folded and the bed tidied. The carpet is becoming more visible every second. Jewelry is untangled and hung up. Empty hangers are filled with the satisfaction of clean clothes and laundry is finally set in order. Papers are filed and lost chapstick is found. Loose bobby pins and hair ties are returned to their rightful place. The last finishing touches: throwing old to-do lists away and straightening pens. Nothing like a midnight surge of energy to clean your room! :)
ReplyDeleteThere seems to be a thing about blue paint in my family.
ReplyDeleteWhen my dad was about 2 years old, They were painting the walls. They set the paint tray in the bathtub so my dad couldn't get it and make a mess. My aunt took it out and set it on the floor so she could take a shower. My dad crawled through the blue paint and tracked it all over the house.
Several years ago, my sister and I were painting. I tried opening up a fresh bottle of blue paint, but ended up squirting it all over me, the counter, and mostly the kitchen tile. It took a while to clean up...
Then, just a few days ago, my sister painted something for her school, and couldn't reach to put the paint away. My little brother got into the paint and squirted the BLUE paint all over the lockers in our house, the couch, and the carpet. Not to mention all over himself. (He is 4, and only wears underpants around the house. He refuses to wear anything else.)
I suppose my dog is next...
Honestly the fact Im halfway done with slice of life today is weird because I really enjoy writing all these it helps me get my thoughts out.

I don’t know if I look like a druggy, I sure hope not, and I’m pretty sure I don’t. This may sound like a weird thing to say but apparently I look like someone who would know where to get some…stuff. This is really weird because I live a good life, dress respectable, clean shaven and clean spoken but for some reason this summer I looked like someone who knew where to get some grass. The first time someone asked me I was at work. I was putting ice in the shed outside and this woman, beautiful woman, I wouldn’t expect her to ask me this question, but she asked me if I knew were to get some “smoke.” I thought she meant cigarettes so I said, “Yeah, just inside there.” Pointing to the gas station. She corrected me and I was like, “Uhh – I – Uhh - I don’t… I don’t do that stuff.” She looked shocked, laughed said sorry than ran off. I had no idea what just happened I just sort of laughed. I never expected that to happen again but it did, twice! This isn’t just a funny story there is something to learn from this. First, I need to do something about the way I present myself. Second, I learned Satan can and will attack you from every corner even in some of your “safe places.” We need to be on guard at all times and live up to our standards every second of everyday especially when times are easy.
Now I'm going to talk about my close family. This one is a little more personal so sorry I won't give you every detail but whats personal is personal. First there's my mom and dad they are getting divorced and right now my dad is living in an extra storage place that we built by our house. Then there's my brother Ethan he's 18 and he doesn't seem like he wants to go on a mission, he is doing his mission papers but isn't preparing he skipped seminary and doesn't use clean language, anyway that's all I will go into that. There's my older sister Tessa she's 16. Then there's meI'm 13. I like to ride bikes this week I've ridden 4 miles and 3 weeks ago ( I think) I rode 10 miles. Last but not least my my little sister Sofie who is 5 years old her favorite thing to do is make messes around the house. But I still love my little sofe.
ReplyDeleteSleep. Yes. "Just 20 more minutes." Well guess what? Wish granted. This is how it went, around 7:30 my brother got me up for family prayer. I get up, wrap myself in my blanket, and went to family prayer. After prayer I had a broken sleep because my alarm was going off every 5 minutes or so. After awhile I turned off my alarm, 'I'm awake now.' I thought. In truth I really wasn't awake, I fell asleep. I awake a little over 20 minutes later, and I look at the clock, 8:20am. I got up, and was ready within 5 minutes. Then my brother took me to school.
ReplyDeleteA few years ago I managed to put a whole in our kitchen wall. I know, not my greatest work. I was running around the house playing with my dog. She had a tennis ball in her mouth and was trying to keep me from catching her. My dog ran through the kitchen and I wasn't far behind. She turned a sharp corner and I tried to follow, but my feet slid out from under me. I fell to the ground and my knee got lodged in the wall. I pulled my knee out of the wall and there was a massive chunk of the wall missing. It's since then been filled with drywall but we still haven't repainted it.

Good Morning! How are you today? That’s fantastic, so picture you’re in a room and there is a door but it’s locked and there is a window but it’s too small to fit thru. This is what happened to me. I was really scared because I got locked in a shed with my siblings and I had to find a way out so I made one, with my shoulder.
ReplyDeleteHaha, sounds like you were the superhero.
ReplyDeleteI am very nervous about next years school. It will be my first year in college classes and I am already struggling with my usual classes. I do know that if I put my faith in the lord everything will be okay
