Slice of Life: DAY 2

Sister Jackson's Slice: DAY 2

Not being able to hear properly over the past three weeks has given me the opportunity of realizing the value of good hearing. After sayint "huh?" about 10-75 times within one short day, you catch a clue.

I am certain I didn't hear some things that were important, but since I couldn't hear them, I don't even know who I could ask to follow up. Over the next several days, I'm hoping I will be able to catch up after catching a clue and getting over catching such a nasty cold.

  1. Yesterday was a strange day:
I saw fawns frolicking in graveyards, tree's shooting out of oceans, the sun shining forth at night, and unhindered merry-go-round's spinning on their axis's. I saw darkness when it should have been light, equations when it should have been English, white when I should have seen black, and the ground when it should have been the sky. Many things I saw, for it was not yesterday, but yester-night. Oh the dreams that can come forth from the mind of the weary.

  3. You know living in France has its perks. I can shower between classes. Get up and eat during class. Heck I can even text on my phone in class (That's my favorite)! But it also has its drawbacks. Like everybody speaks French and not very much English for example. That really sucks.

    1. That's really cool that you live in France! I'd love to go there someday. I have a question though: Since France's time is 8 hours ahead of Utah time, do you watch classes recorded or do you still watch them Live?

I have a meet coming up on Saturday and it could take me to another meet called the Beehives. It is meet right below state. If i go the beehives I could go to State. I was very frustrated with my self because I useably just push through what ever is bothering and I couldn’t do that.

  6. The day you pack is the day the memories start flooding in. As you look under your bed and find the candy wrappers from last Halloween, in your dresser you find a birthday card from your grandma, and in the back of you closet is the picture frame you broke and hid from your mom. I see it as a time to reflect on the past, as objects are thrown into boxes and memories placed carefully to be remembered another time. And when the last box is tape shut, its time to look at what the next adventure will be, and what memories will be made.

  7. I live in Kansas which is pretty boring state, but something that makes up for its boring-ness is the really pretty sunrises and sunsets we have here.
Every morning when I drive home from seminary I can see the sun rising up over the horizon, filling the sky with color- bright reds and pinks and oranges and sometimes purple.
At night, the sun sinks into the western sky, and as the blue gets darker, the sky is again filled with vibrant color.
I missed seeing those when I lived in Dallas.

  9. Dreams… why do we have dreams? Last night I had a really weird dream (like usual). Most the time they don’t even make sense. Where do they come from? Our mind must take snippets of our day, distort them, and mix them all together, with the end result of a dream that makes no sense. Sometimes they’re funny… others sad. I guess they’re kind of cool though! So I’ll keep on dreamin.

Though when I went to my cousin's wedding yesterday, it was actually quite fun. (Weddings can be fun?) I know that sounds different and, you're probably thinking, "What is so fun about wearing a dress for three hour?" The dress part wasn't the fun part. 11. I glanced over at Noah, in the passenger seat. It was weird to see him there. Just a year ago, he was too small to be allowed there. His hair had grown too long. I was pretty sure it bothered him because he touched it every five seconds, half the time he smoothed it down the other half he pushed it back up. We had his playlist going as we drove; the beat was just a little too loud and the windows were open. I couldn’t help but let my thoughts wander to the idea that we weren’t always going to be able to do this. We won’t be able to just jump in the car, go to Target, drive to nowhere in particular or go to the movies together. That I’ll go to college in the next year or so and he will get older. He’ll start to date. That thought made me smile. His eleven year old self couldn’t fathom it a possibility but I figured that would change at some point. He will go on a mission and at some point I’ll get married. It all seemed so far away but the math proved my head wrong. I brought my thoughts back to him as the song switched from something by Imagine Dragons to one of the classics Noah had grown to love from watching Guardians of the Galaxy. I asked him about his summer. He told me about plans to go to Scout Camp and try air-soft guns with friends. He explained he wants to save up his money for a new video game. As well as all sorts of other, eleven year old ideas, that made my heart happy. The song changed again, to one I knew. I started yelling out the lyrics; he turned to me. I caught his expression out of the corner of my eye as I drove, singing ridiculously.
“You are so weird.” He laughed.
    “I love you too!”

Well I woke up later than normal today because I was really tired. My dog Jack kept moving around in my room and whining because he wanted out. I was really frustrated with him because I wanted some sleep. The thing that I realize is that my days go a lot smoother and I am more alert even though I woke up early. So when my dog wakes me up I am glad to get my schooling down early and get through my day better.

Then I receive greater blessings! :)

I didn’t want to play since I didn’t really know the girls I’d be playing with, and I don’t exactly consider myself athletic. Finally, it came down to them needing one more person to be able to play so I was kind of forced into it. After two 30 minute practices in one week the day came play in the tournament. It was double elimination and we ended up playing four games. (we got 4th place!) Don't get me wrong, I really love seminary, I actually miss it when I can't go but a few extra hours of sleep was really nice. Even though I loose sleep to attend early morning seminary, (this might sound totally cliche but) it's totally worth it! To understand my slice for today I must explain my family (brothers and sisters) to you. I have two older step sisters out of the house, two biological siblings and four adopted siblings. The one closest to me in age was adopted when she was two and I was four so we have a pretty close relationship having grown up together. The other three were adopted about four years ago, I have an okay relationship with the two boys, but the older girl and I butt heads a lot. We are all pretty close, but we have our moments, like this afternoon at lunch, when I had to stop world war three from breaking out over a loaf of bread.I was able to sort it out without too many hard feelings and in the end everyone got the bread they needed.

By the end of January I felt that my sugar intake was out of control and that I was being controlled by it and not the other way around. So I decided to go on a 30 day sugar fast. It wasn't easy. The impulses to just give in and have a little bit of sweet deliciousness that this wonderful person spent so much time making were very strong. But my resolve was STRONGER. It has been a week since my thirty day sugar free challenge ended. Yes, I have had sugar since then but I have been controlling/minimizing the amount of sugar I eat. We truly have control over our actions and our emotions. From this experience I have learned this truth: healthy IS happy.

The day has fallen into twilight as my mind quivers and turns searching for words and meaning.
Often in life we see so much but take little comprehension to the day to day, may we each find words to enlighten our view beyond the horizons we currently see.
We have the ability to comprehend what surrounds us, may we use it beyond sight but vision.

I also have two more sisters, Jessica and Chelsey but they are married and live in their own houses. They don’t like doing laundry either but they do it anyway. Makayle and Kaitlin get to fold the monstrous mountain of laundry. My job is to put it away. Sometimes I grab an extremely large pile of clothes and I can’t see where I’m going. The result is an unfolded pile of clothes.

I have had an epiphany. I never realized quite what a lot of books I had until I removed them all from their shelves, (Yes, I have multiple bookshelves.) and placed them in tall piles across the floor, then was forced to toe my cautious and sleepy way through the literary maze this morning to slap off that pesky seminary alarm in the dark. It was exciting. Upon coming home, I began to re-order them, in a new and beautiful way inspired by a wonderful friend. In doing this, I was struck by the realization that I have upward of two hundred books that belong solely to me. There are bookshelves on three of the four walls in my room, and the fourth wall is only safe because it has a bed against it and two doors in it. I can’t go half a year without re-arranging the darlings, and subsequently re-reading most. It is because of this that I have realized a fundamental part of me.

    I am a bookaholic.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity of receiving my Patriarchal Blessing. It was truly the most amazing experience I have ever had. Because of this experience, I have been thinking about how truly blessed I am to be a member of our true, restored church. The blessing that I (and we) are able to receive are incredible. I am so grateful to have the knowledge that where we are right now is temporary. We were all sent here for a unique and divine purpose. I am can't imagine what a life without this Gospel would be like. I few weeks ago, I fancied a hangout with my Maggie and her loud siblings, so I packed my foam swords in the car and left. My short leg struggled to reach the petals of my oversized bicycle but, with one final push I crested over the hill. I reached under my chin and unclasp to the strap, allowing the helmet to tumble off my head , the cool breeze ruffled my hair and I wiped the perspiration from my four head. Once I got in a sip of lukewarm water from my bottle and then replaced the helmet atop my head I was about ready to start off again, hopefully returning home in time catch dinner. I just turned my head in time to see the large bearlike dog leap out of the bushes and tackled me . I tumbled into the ditch next to me, my head making a sizable thud on a rock that lay there. Looking back upon it now the dog was most likely just trying to be friendly, but to my eight-year-old mind I assume that the dog was trying to eat me alive. I punched and kicked, still dazed from the collision with the rock. I regained my footing and climbed up the steep walls of the ditch and hoisted myself astride my bicycle. A young woman with the dog leash came running up the hill asking me if I was okay still rather confused I yelled at her and told her that her dog was trying to kill me. I bolted down the hill as fast as my small eight-year-old legs could pedal.

Dollar Bills. How silly and yet important they seem at least in our society anyway. They seem to run and control our lives, even though they’re just green paper. To think something so small and so fragile could have so much power, whether for good or for evil. And yet we find ourselves flocking to the maybe not so good jobs just because they provide a little more money. When the good and wholesome jobs are what really matter. All the opportunities and relationships that could occur without it being there. But no matter how hard we try it’s always there to greet us however not always in the most joyful way. When the bills and the debt comes up they seem to tease us to use them, tricking us into thinking that 1 dollar today won’t harm you, when in reality day after day it racks up. Almost daily we see them and oft do we spend them. Never giving thinking to exactly how much they mean. Yet being a small green paper doesn’t stop it from tempting. Deceiving us into thinking we always need more of it. Now why can’t we go back to the good old days when green little slips of paper didn’t control people’s lives, wasn’t always there to tempt us and tease us. When the things that were sold were bought with other things. Such as a farmer’s wheat and vegetables, or a baker’s bread, or a school teacher’s knowledge were enough to buy a simple house and some food. When people relied on each other’s charity and hard work to keep the town or city growing and strong. Now why can’t we go back to the good old days...when the people were much more like people?

  37. Have you ever wanted to ride on a bumpy back of an elephant? Or have you wanted to snuggle up close with a baby lion cub? I have done both of these things, and more!

A few months ago I went to "The Elephant Sanctuary" for the second time! But even still I was in awe at the large and gentle creatures. The first stop was to feed the elephants. I picked up a handful of the brown elephant bites and quickly poured them into the snotty trunk of the hungry elephant.

Next up was petting these magnificent animals! The handler introduced me to the elephant and placed my hand on the trunk of the elephant. Even though it was dry, rough, and cracked on the inside, it was tender loving and happy in the inside. Through his eyes, I could see what it was feeling, and I immediately feel in love with it. I pet its ear, stomach, trunk, the bottom of the foot, knee, elbow, and the tail. The tail hairs were like wire! I looked inside the mouth, and then took a picture while holding its tusk, it was amazing.

Last but not least, I was going to go on a "Farari ride." :) I was placed on the bone-y back of the elephant and was told to hold onto the handler in front of me. I felt so high that I could have been on top of the world! I saw the deep forests of thorny bushes and tall grassy hills next to the giant mountains. My mouth was wide open! This was really happening!

After the everyone had gotten a scratchy ride on a elephant, we bought elephant souvenirs and chatted. Soon we hopped into the car and drove while speaking about the amazing adventure we had just experienced.

When I was little, I would always get so frustrated because there were always so many seeds inside the watermelons and it was annoying to keep spitting them out. My sister told me to just eat them if it bothered me so much to spit them out. My dad’s response to that was “If you eat the seeds inside the watermelon then you will grow a watermelon inside of you.” He then pointed at my aunt, who was pregnant at the time (but I did not know because I was a very young child), and told us that she had eaten too many watermelon seeds when she was a kid and now she has a watermelon growing inside of her belly. This, of coarse, totally freaked my sister and I out and we decided to just stop eating watermelon altogether.

As I began my afternoon Jog, enjoying the wind, but forgetting the music,
I notice about half way through the entirety of my Jog that my headphones were
swaying back and forth–––with nothing connected to them.
It wasn't long before I turned myself around, and re-traced my steps. Only to find my phone shattered on the sidewalk
. I frantically ran home, opened Google, and made an Apple Appointment at my local Apple Store.
I paid 86.00$ USD to them in order to have a functioning phone again.
Perhaps I should have waited and endured it. But the swiftness of my response is what made me realize the topic of this slice:

Something I have come to learn whilst performing in front of others is that your success does not weigh as heavily on your preparation as does the confidence you place in yourself. You can prepare wonders, but play nightmares if you lack the confidence in yourself to do that which you have prepared yourself to do. Just do your best, let everything fall into place, and you will be happy whether or not you made a mistake in your performance.

Water. The essential thing in my life. Its many uses are numberless. Without water we would have no beautiful flowers and plants. We would have no sea food to eat. No water to drink. We could not cry when we are sad. We could not have tears of joy. We would just be a blob of thirty percent of bones and muscle. We could not surf or go on cruises. Our planet would be a mix of Venus and mars. A boiling inferno with nothingness in sight. The list could go on but this is a slice of life not a dictionary of life. Anyways water is super important to me because we wouldn’t be in the same beautiful world we live in today without water.

You can't say to yourself "go to sleep" and then you immediately fall asleep, you need to wait until your body agrees with your mind before you can physically do that which you want. I find I can only fall asleep when I lay in a single position while doing nothing, and have my mind just think about the comfort that sleeping brings. But yes, sleeps evasion is quite annoying, and I wish I had more control over it.

    1. Speaking of Eagle Projects at grave-yards, I did mine at the 'Lady Peace Memorial Gardens', a cemetery here on Guam. I painted the lofts and beams overhanging the 'family estate building', and touched up on the paint job of a few buildings. A word of advice, get your Eagle Project as soon as possible. Don't put it off because you think you can find one that is better, doing anything and getting it done as quickly as possible will help you in the long run.

  54. After mutual my friend and I took two balloons outside and threw them around, it was sooo much fun! i'm so grateful for friends who will go out with me in the rain just to throw a balloon around. Friends are so important. They can drag us down or pull us up. Look at your friends and make sure they are the people that are helping you become a better. You can have whoever you want as your friends, choose people who you want to become!

What you said is so true and important! I enjoy the fact that you shared your story as an example the enjoyments from having good friends, but you then plainly state why we need to be careful who we are friends with. You made it personal and then applied it to us. Well done!

It’s March, it’s spring. Spring is the time for growing, for new things to come. After winter, when everything is cold and dark, spring comes and brings flowers and birds. At the beginning of this month we came back to Utah from Arizona. I find myself suddenly cold, where Arizona was so warm. I find myself suddenly home and yet so alone. I find myself emotional and ready to cry every few minutes, something that is most definitely not me. I find myself feeling anxious and worried. I feel left out and know there is something they are not telling me. I feel down and yet I try so hard to be positive and happy. Spring is on its way and it’s bringing new hopes and dreams with it.

This day marks the birth of one of the most innovative authors of our time. Dr. Suess is the man, I speak of. You may laugh at this proposition. You may disagree. I honestly do not care. He is a man that managed to break the rules of writing. He wrote for children, yet the parents all enjoy him. There is more to his writing than meets the eye. There is something refreshing or different to find inside his books. I do not always agree with his messages, but I can still appreciate his work. We celebrate his birthday by reading his books. It is a memory I cherish. I don’t care that I am a legal adult now, his books can still be enjoyed. I don't know why would we limit ourselves and say those books are just for kids.

  58. Pueblo West Colorado is a pretty boring place to live, when you first get here. I have lived here for almost 8 years, and by taking a closer look I have discovered that Pueblo West has it's own pieces of beauty. Sure, there are dirt roads and hot Summers, but lots of good can come from it. Every year, on the 4th of July, all of Pueblo West, and even a few people from Pueblo, come down on one road for a water parade. Everyone shows up in their swimsuits with water guns, Trucks of water, and plenty of sunscreen. People spray each other for hours! Sometimes, firetrucks also come into play during the parade.

Pueblo West also has some of the most beautiful sunsets, turning the leaves (which isn't very many) a wonderful, golden color. There is also a Reservoir, which is perfect for skiing, wake boarding, and boating. Pueblo is also known as the Steel City, due to the amount of steel factories all over the place. Another thing about Pueblo is art. If you go into town, there are art studios, museums, and shops all over the place! The last thing I'm going to talk about is the Colorado State Fair, held every year for about a week in August. People from all over the state come! There are rides, activities, music performances, and of course, food.

It took me a while to realize it, but with the help of some AMAZING friends, I think Pueblo West, and Pueblo, are pretty cool places to live. (most of the time (; )

  60. Now, Sister Jackson, I thank you (partially sarcastically) for using another picture of CAKE. It’s fine, but now I can’t think of anything else! :) I would like to take a moment to appreciate frosting. Some frosting has has adorable little air-bubbled holes scattered throughout, and that is the mark of thick deliciousness. Some frosting is thinner, but once it cools and hardens, there forms a cracked-looking finish to simple desserts. Then there’s the fondant which has to show up normal frosting by covering a cake seamlessly. The best part is each has a place in the society of dessert. And life simply wouldn’t be right without frosting.

  61. Im very unhappy that spring is here...It means that summer is right around the corner....and summer is terrible. I hate summer for like 30 differnt reasons, like
    1. Every single bug escapes hell somehow and they attack you every time you leave the house
    2. Its REALLY HOT HERE
    3. The neighbors always want me to come outside and I dont ever want to and now I cant use the "I have to do school" excuse because SCHOOL IS OUT!
geez....Ive got alot of problems now that summer is right around the corner.
