Slice of Life: DAY 22

Sister Jackson's Slice:

Social media is a tricky thing because it cracks the world right open when you use it like we do. And there are so many nooks and crannies in which to hide or misconstrue. There are so many ways to misunderstand and ways to feel things that aren’t real. But sometimes our intuition is correct, but there is no way to know if it is unless we ask for clarification. I think about how much social media has affected my life for good, and I feel thankful for all the friends and family I've grown closer to because of this tool.

For the last ten days of slicing, I challenge each of you to seek out someone you've never commented on their slice before, and give them a comment instead! Come back later on if you're an early bird slicer in order to accomplish this request.

Also, over these ten days, if you've got a little extra time, there are later gator slicers who could use comments, so go back through the past days, and find people with no comments. This is simply for classroom community purposes and for your enjoyment, so if you can't fit it in, don't stress out about it.

Happy slicing!

    What is a friend?
Well, to me, a friend is someone I am willing to wake up for before my day has begun just to see and talk with them face-to-face. A friend is someone you eagerly anticipate to meet and communicate with, and someone who likewise feels the same about you. Along with other things, they motivate and uplift you to follow the correct course, to plot the right path. They don't speak ill towards you when you are not present, and good things when you are, but are constant companions always ready to heed the call for comfort, assistance, or guidance. A friend does not usher one away, but accepts them whenever a shoulder is needed to be leaned upon. Having the ability to spend hours communicating with each other without saying anything of importance can be characterized as having a friendship because you have become open to what you and what the other has to say. You can tell who your true friends are when you can honestly know they would stay with you 'till the end of the line, and have no intention of leaving. But most important, the sole purpose for your relationship is to have a great and memorable time, one filled with laughter, enjoyment, and downright simple fun!

    1. Thank you so much for posting this Caleb! I really wanted to know what the definition of a friend was. I was writing a letter to one of my friends once but I tried to come up with the definition of a friend but I couldn't think of anything but you answered it for me perfectly! Great Slice.

    2. "til the end of the line" that was totally a Winter Soldier quote. Just saying.

    3. Thanks Aliya, and yes Indy, I knowingly took that phrase from Winter Soldier because of the relation it has with this slice as well as the similarity between what was happening there with what is discussed here.

  2. I loved the new Star Wars film! (If you haven't seen Star Wars you might not want to read this.) But those who have if I were to pick my favorite character in the movie I would probably pick Rey, because her example as a character is so amazing and inspiring to me.
Rey is filled with this astonishing personality that I really love, she is a dreamer and has an ambition for adventure. She values the important things in life like fighting for what's right and finding out who she really is after being abandoned. Rey is looked at as a confident hardworking vulnerable and kind young woman. I think there are too many movies where women are posed as always being the overly dramatic and weak kind of woman. In a recent article that I read about Rey it specifically talked about what girls should strive to be like and how they should be treated. He said "I want the next generation of little girls to grow up as unaware of stereotypes and ridiculous double-standards as Rey is. I want them to see her and understand that they too can take on the world as people who have flaws and talents, vulnerability and strength. I want them to expect respect in all their relationships, and know that anyone who doesn't give it to them isn't worth their time.
And most of all I want them to be unafraid to be exactly who they are, and to think to themselves in times of doubt, What would Rey do?" I really like that because I think that we should all be able to stand up for ourselves not only women but men too. Don't be afraid to take on the world, we can face our trials through the help of our loving Heavenly Father who is always there for us.

  3. Have you ever had a plan? Maybe a life plan, a plan for the day's activities, or something similar? Have you ever had your heart set on said plan? You knew there was nothing wrong with your plan. You weren't doing bad things, they were all good... But you just got the feeling it was wrong for you at that time? I've had that happen a couple of times recently. I've tried to start things or make plans for the future but just kept getting a strong no from the spirit. It was hard because they weren't bad things and they were things I really wanted. It has really helped me gain perspective on Heavenly Father's plan for me and the statement good, better, or best. Sometimes the things we want aren't the things we necessarily need at the time.

I know exactly what you mean! I've tried multiple times to plan for good and uplifting things in my life, but they didn't seem to work the way I planned. The Lord has a much greater plan and purpose for our lives. We just have to learn and trust the prompting a we recieve from the Spirit and trust it'll all work out. In time, it always does. :)

We play elaborate dress up games for hours on end, my friend and I. Seven years old? I can believe that. On a trampoline, spraying each other with the hose until we’re soaked. Eight years old? I can believe that. Again a trampoline, but this time we jump with umbrellas in hand, it feels like we are flying. Nine years old? I can believe that. We pack an adventure bag filled with all the essentials; inside, a rope, a blanket, camera, perhaps a pocket knife, and the ever present PB&J. Ten years old? Sure! We huddle outside wrapped in elaborate costumes, brewing potions out of grass and herbs we find, and painting special designs on our faces with charcoal from the fireplace. Eleven years old? I feel like it. We play with bottles of shaving cream, making fancy hats and throwing shaving cream balls at each other. I eat whipped cream from the bottle. I am happy to stick my bare feet in the mud any day! My mom argues with me to wear shoes. I often forget to brush my hair. I climb trees. I make a pillow nook to read in. I wear mismatched clothing. I play dolls. I always mess up baking recipes. I have a dumb sense of humor. I don’t wear makeup. I am terrible at all things girly, I cannot even paint my toes properly! I love cereal and oatmeal, bacon and lots of chocolate cake. I like fuzzy socks and checkered skirts. I want shoes with rainbow heels. Story books with pictures are still my favorite. Heck, I can’t even spell things corecktlee! Twelve years old? Yes I can believe that! Perhaps even thirteen! But older? There is no way. I still feel little and naive. I am “young and unafraid!” I am that short, weird, goofy little twelve year old who walks across stone walls and swings on swings for hours, who loves all things disney and playing dress up is her favorite thing. No, I am not, in my mind, mature. And yet here I am, turning fifteen. I think I will always be that strange little twelve year old who plays make believe and reads picture books in funny voices for her little sibling. I will always be a little kid. Maybe I could find Peter and fly to neverland.

  5. Last Saturday I got to go to a Disney themed stake dance.
I loved the theme but I had nothing to wear for it. Most people were dressed up in really cute outfits. Oh well.
The dance was pretty typical for my stake...hardly anyone there, excellent refreshments though, and nobody asked me to dance...nothing new.
The real adventure happened after the dance.
My friend was going to give me a ride, but her car broke down so my dad had to give us a ride there. Her dad was going to give us a ride home after the dance.
After the dance, she called her house to have somebody pick us up and nobody answered.
Before she could call her parents cell phones, her phone died. I couldn't help because I dont have service on my phone right now.
There was nothing we could do about that so we went outside to see if somebody was there to pick us up, but went inside after it started snowing out of nowhere.
We found the hall phone by the bishop's office, and called both her parents cell phones nobody answered.
I could have called my house, but we didn't want to have one of my parents get us then have one of her parents show up and have us not be there. (and both my parents are usually in bed at this time)
We went back into the gym after using the hall phone, and it was dark and empty. We totally panicked for a minute, thinking everybody had left.
We ran to other side of the church by wear we came in and saw a few adults talking the foyer. We were able to borrow a phone and after thirty minutes her dad finally picked us up and brought us home.
The sad thing is this is not the first time this kind of thing has happened to me. Only the first time I was all alone.

  6. This morning or last night there was a terrorist attack in Brussels at the airport. At that airport there was three missionaries that got injured when the bom went off. When I heard this it became real to me what was important in life.

What it was one of my siblings that was one of those missionaries that got hurt? I've realized my family is so important and I shouldn't take them granted for a minute.

Those people in Brussel need our prayers and those families of those missionaries need our prayers. Please pray for them!

I stare out my window. . . Dark, rich brown swaying in the wind. Light and vibrant green fluttering with the sway of the breeze. A long lasting swoosh, grows louder as a plane flies over head. A chirp of a bird calling out to his friend. The scratch of a squirrel as he climbs higher and higher. The warmth of the sun shining through each pocket, crack and crevice it can find. The light blue sky, touched with thin, whispy clouds. Green blades spring from the ground, daring to take a chance against natures forces. A shadow flashes overhead, preditor searching for prey. The swoosh of the trees, fluttering of the leaves, the sun shining through their branches, so peaceful, so perfect. They stand for all to see and hear of a sight so beautiful and clear. Nature is meant to be enjoyed, next time you get a chance, take a step outside or look out your window and see what new things you can discover about nature.

They feed off of the desired, killing them and turning the innocent into one of their own. Each year the battle returns in different forms and separate sections of the courtyard. The feud fought by the unlucky soldiers chosen by the rulers of the household. KyAnne is my cousin and my close friend. We've known each other since birth and have always got along. Well, mostly. We don't always get along perfectly big that's what's makes our friendship so strong.
Anyway, she turned the big 15 today and I wanted to express my love and gratitude toward her. She's changed my life in many ways. She gets the child out of me and makes me think.
She's so talented and spunky and fun. She's had a creative mind and keen intellect. She has her own style and has a way with words. She has a strong testimony and knows how to poetry her feelings. She is especially a kind and loving friends to everyone. I learned I can hit even higher notes than I thought I could which is good because a lot of my part is really high. I also learned that I am the youngest girl in my “group” the other people my age besides one boy is in a group that is only onstage for three or so scenes. That means harder songs for me to memorize and more practices but I’m really happy that I got this part!

My sister hand writes back to every letter I send with details about everything in perfect handwriting. My brother- I love him so much but Angie does better. Talking with her can be like that - we sort of transcend normal time. Even though my best friend and I live ten states apart, and who knows how many miles, she can make me laugh so hard I can’t breathe. When we spend hours on the phone, our conversations can be very serious, or so strange that the rational side of me prays for a transfer. Usually, they’re super strange and hysterically funny. She’s so great that it would take a whole bakery of pies to describe how wonderful my best friend is. I feel happy enough burst ‘around’ her. It’s amazing.

Your slices are always a delight to read. It is sad how time does slip at times when we strive to hold onto it the longest. It becomes a wisp that escapes through the tunnels created by a closed fist that intentionally is meant to let nothing escape. But that is why we have memories, to place in our hearts what our minds can not grasp.

I am flying a reconnaissance mission to disable imperial transports so that the Rebel alliance can capture important imperial officers. I silently congratulate myself as the last TIE-fighter spins out of control and blows up in the distance. I fire two ion blasts at the imperial transports to disable them. 17. Modest is Hardest

There are tons of things to choose from at Deseret Industries! I went there today with a few of my friends to hang out and look at clothes. As I looked through the clothes, disappointment entered my mind. Here are some of the problems I faced: Some of the clothing’s fabric was weird and sometimes see-through, and many of the shirts had low necklines and/or no sleeves, (sometimes not even straps.) What has this world come to people? A girl has such a hard time finding a decent looking AND modest item of clothing these days! I hope we never get to the point where there is nothing modest in clothing stores; that would be terrible.

I think all the LDS women feel your pain! I know that I do! The world is making righteous things increasingly more difficult to find. That would be kinda cool though.

    5. I feel ya. I especially have a hard time because I'm 6 feet tall, and only 13. Everything that is long enough for me just isn't my style. I get most of my clothes hand me downs from my cousin, anyway, and I have a longer torso than she does, so the shirts are often too short. Lately, I have been getting t-shirts that have really cool patterns on them, but they're a little see through. Usually, wearing tank tops underneath solve the problem, but the more I look, there are super short shorts all over the place, see through shirts, crop tops, and other disrespectful clothing. I have started wearing guy shirts because they are a lot longer and aren't low-cut. Our world is pretty corrupt. :/

It was great to hear about what the Constitutional Party stands for and why the people who came tonight were there. It was great to connect with people on a local level. In elections like this where everything is blown up to huge proportions, it can be really hard to think that you can make a difference and that your opinion even matters, but on a lower level, we talk about the things we can do and it feels like you can make a difference and at least do something. 25. So today was super unproductive for me. xD I did nothing; well I did manage to break my tablet. I suppose I did spend time with family, worked on my eagle project, and went to scouts, so a little productive.

  29. Today I went to my sister’s house that she just moved into on Saturday. There are boxes everywhere. Her new couch has not come yet so they are using their camping chairs to sit on. Her new baby was hard to find with all the boxes scattered around. As we moved boxes a little cradle was revealed and inside lay a little sleeping angel baby.

Today I got up at five-thirty so I could catch my flight back to Texas. I dragged myself out of couch, slugged to the bathroom and got ready, trudged upstairs, nibbled on some toast, then drove to the airport. It was pretty packed for six-thirty in the morning. I switched planes in Las Vegas and then flew back to Amarillo. I. AM. SO. DEAD. (meaning tired)

  31. The personality of Trevor Christensen

He’s a pretty independent boy. Outgoing, most of the time. But some days he’s a bit of an introvert. He can stand up for himself and say what he thinks. Sometimes that’s good and sometimes bad. You can see him smiling and happy for the most part. He tries to stay positive and have fun. He loves to go on adventures and travel. He also loves geography and architecture. “Weirdo” is one way to explain him. He has a great sense of humor and loves to laugh. He is a deep thinker, sometimes too deep. Music is a big part of his life. Playing ukulele and piano. He is a neat freak. He likes to organize and clean too. That pretty much sums him up.

  33. Today has been the worst day of my life! I had finally finished my Art Contest drawing a few days ago, and guess what, it got lost! I worked so hard on it and I definitely do not want to start ALL over again, but I have to! I have been looking for 5 hours, and under all that stress and pressure, that I threw up! I had a horrible day! I hope I can find my drawing!

Nervous excitement bubbled up inside of me as I half walked half skipped across the Christensen's yellow flecked lawn. We hadn't seen them in two years, but we liked to visit every once in a while when we were in Utah. I was greeted by Brother and Sister Christensen, their warm smiles and laughs of greeting filling me up. I loved them, but really who I was looking for was around the corner. Even though she was two years younger than me, Anna, the oldest, and I had always had a fun time. She and I picked up where we left off. . .Well, it felt like it. She and I laughed, giggled, and never ran out of things to say. Within half an hour she had figured out things about me that not even the girls at home could. I miss her.

  35. Salt lake city is so much fun to ride scooters/longboards at. Cj and I went to the mall and bought some clothes today. When we were checking out the shoes at my favorite store the manager walked up to me and told me to get the Janoski Lunars. He showed me it and I took his advice and bought them and couldn't be happier.

I am feeling very motivated today. I want to do everything I possibly can. I started using my step tracker again and realized, I've only walked around 700 steps, that's not good at all. I am motivated to go on a walk but the only problem is it's really rainy and stormy. Maybe I'll go to the gym.

  38. There are so many times when I wish I could go live alone in the mountains and just be alone.
Humans can just be horrible and terrible creatures. They can be rude and cruel and then couldn't care less.
Humans are so judgmental, it doesn't matter what race or religion or where they come from, they have to judge everyone.
I know Im at fault too, but I just wish people would stop being heartless and start caring.

Thursday night and Monday morning were a blast! Not really, they were painfully dreaded for a good while because we delivered papers then. We would go pick up 1,500 papers on Thursday night around 7:30. We would then refill the newsstands and then roll and through papers and end around 11:30. We would then get up at 5:30 for early morning seminary at 6. After seminary we would take off to deliver the rest of the papers to elderly communities for 3 hours. We did all this for a hot 250 dollars every two weeks. Why would you do this you ask? We did this to save for my mission. Although it took a long time, let me reemphasize, A LONG TIME, to get used to and not really mind doing, it was extremely worth it. Having worked that hard for 2 years to pay for my mission I have an ownership to it. Hard work and dedication pay more than a lousy paycheck, they pay with purpose and happiness.

  41. Part 2 of Hawaii adventures! After that one time my sister puked none of the GIRLS puked again but my brother........ The day after my sister puked, my brother wasn't feeling so good. We went to take him to the nurse to get the same shot as my sick sister and on the way he puked in the hall. He stayed in the ship the whole day while part of my family (The part that wasn't staying with my brother) went and did fun island things. I can't remember exactly what. but I do remember some really fun things we did. The kids with blue eyes ( My brother and I ) plus my mom went zip lining it was so fun, I was scared at first but got the hang of it. Then we went to a luau where they showed all the kids the cooked pig. (EWWWWWWWW) there were fire dancers and all. The last show of the luau was another fire dancer. he was 10 years old and AWESOME!!!! Hawaii was such a fun trip. I hope i can go again sometime.

  42. This week has been one long test of patience. Not only has it just been a hard week, but at the beginning of the week the season finale of my favorite show come on. I still haven't had time to watch it. I wake up each morning, working as hard as I can and get my school done just in time to go to bed, but without enough time to watch the finale. So I sit here patiently waiting for enough time in the day to watch it. Hopefully I'll be able to watch it soon.

  44. So guys yesterday I had a problem, so here’s my problem. My sister thought it would be a good idea to give me a piece of paper with wet paint on it. She thought It was a good idea to put it on my head, so I got red paint on my hair and the paper fell off of my head and got on my computer. So that’s what happened yesterday.
