Slice of Life: DAY 8

Sister Jackson's Slice:

The lights flick on outside, the house begins to simmer down, and in the quiet night I realize that spring is on its way--another spring to want a garden and plant new trees, another spring to see if I can find a swing of things that will be effective. I want my garden to finally be a happy one this year. I want to look forward to the warm summer nights when I go out in the garden and watch vegetables grow and see the stars begin to pop through the dark blue fabric of night.

Leave your slice in the comments below and make a reply to others!
Happy slicing!

Every day I end up having a moment where I think in depth about the reality of my life. Some days, I wonder how my life is such a mess. I panic, and I wonder how I can possibly get out of my crisis. Then I realize how blessed I am. I have the same amount of wonder that I had moments before, about my problems, but now the wonder is focused on how privileged I am. I was born into a wonderful family, at a wonderful time, with people who love me. I’ve got amazing friends, and live in an amazing country that was raised up by God. I thank my Heavenly Father for all that I am blessed with, and for how much joy I have found in all these blessings. Instead of going to panic mode, I ask God to help me with the things that I stress about, and relief is found.

    1. Rekekah I have those moments too! It's so easy to think about the negative things that happen in life, but I realize that, yes, we are so very blessed and we should never focus on just the bad things in life, we have so much to be grateful for!

  3. Yesterday I was thinking about the future presidential candidates, and I got a little freaked out because we have two presidential candidates that believe in socialism who want free college and stuff like that.
America is already almost 20 trillion in debt and socialism will just destroy this country. At this rate soon there will be another Great Depression in a few years and we will be screwed.
When I get older, Im going to move to a different country….

  4. .... dang. I was hoping I could be first to post I guess not then. Well its the effort that counts right? Well I'm having my very first track meet this Saturday I'm running the 100 200 long jump and 4/400 relay and I can't wait I want to do high jump but I can only jump 4 feet 10 inches but I am pretty short so I probably wont be doing high jump. It sucks that I have a track meet the day after my sister gets off her mission cause I have to go since I'm doing the 4/400 relay cause we can only have 4 to a team and we can't have any backup runners. Ugh it makes me frustrated. Well I gotta go schools about to start. lol

  5. Outside the Haven of my home, a blanket of mist cloaks the open air with a sheet of mystery. What mystery you ask? The mystery of what may lay more than six feet in front of you! Just like driving through a thick mist, life in itself is unpredictable. We seem to have no way of seeing what tragedies or blessing we may receive in the future, but, we CAN see, (sometimes,) a few “feet” in ahead of us. When we feel lost and surrounded by the unknown, (the unpredictable and the mysteriousness of this life,) we can pray to God to guide us, by lighting a “few steps” ahead of us which can help us to feel more safe and secure.

  7. I drive down the familiar street and slow down when I approach the familiar brown house on the corner. I see it is no longer the dark brown I remember it being, but it is now a tan color. The long path of stairs leading up the front door is the same, and the four tall maple trees stand in the same alignment as the did before.
I slowly turn the corner and see the backyard and garage. An unfamiliar car sits parked in the driveway, and the tree that used to sit in the side yard is gone.
I look into the overgrown backyard, and memories come flooding back. I can see the patio where I would sing and dance in the rain as a kid. I see the hill I would go sledding on in the winter, and ride my sisters trike down in the summer. I the trees that I believed faries lived in and smile, pulling away before I get too distracted looking down memory lane.
As I drive away, I think of all the fun times I had in my big brown house as a kid, a realize I don't belong there anymore. God has big plans for me, and I can't believing in the past if I want this plan to work.

I feel like I'm drowning. I have play practice almost everyday from 4-7, I have Liahona school everyday, and I go to my high school every other day from 10-3 for choir and seminary. On the days I go to my high school, I don't have time to do Liahona school because I'm gone all day! So then I get behind and then my Mom gets mad at me because I'm behind, and I just don't have time to get caught up! I feel like I'm drowning, and everyday that passes just drags me lower.

There are people out there that get famous and then they leave behind their natural selfs, which is something you would never want to happen. Others know that they can be an even a better person than they already are by keeping the spirit that they already have, and not by changing it, or almost completely getting rid of it! A constant sound of buckets and buckets of water being poured down from the sky above, with an occasional rumble of thunder or gust of wind swaying the trees. It almost sounds like a bubbling fountain the way the rain bounces off the ground. I find it exhilarating to watch a flash of lightning soon followed by the loud booming of thunder. I love rainy days especially during the summer. To go outside and feel the cool rain splash on your face. With in minutes you are completely soaked but its doesn't matter because you're enjoying the rain, it's presence cooling everything off from the constant heat that summer brings. It reminds me of when I was younger, when it would rain, my friends and I would rush outside to dance and play in the rain. We used to get trash bags and make holes in them for makeshift ponchos. Haha, those were some fun times. :)

  13. The other night I was sprinkling black pepper onto my dinner when I started to wonder what type of food black pepper would be categorized as, so I looked it up. Turns out that the peppercorn that black pepper comes from is considered a fruit. To turn the peppercorn into the pepper you sprinkle onto your food, they soak it in really hot water until the skin is all wrinkly. Then, they leave it out in the sun to dry. Finally they crumble the first layer of skin off and grind it into a lovely spice that flavors your food.

  15. How I met my bestie

So it’s my first year at Liahona and there was this one particular girl (Elise) that was nice to me and talked to me on chat. I had this good feeling about her and I had this idea to ask her for her number. I don’t know where it came from or why I asked her out of all people. But I did anyways. I think she was a little creeped out by me. But we became really good friends quickly. We are seriously spirit twins! Even though I haven’t met her in person we have a really good bond. I needed someone like her in my life! I think that is why I had a feeling I needed to ask her for her number. Even though I was pretty nervous. She is such a good friend to me, and a very important person in my life. I can’t wait to meet her in person in June and then October. BFFLNMW! I'm really only half way through my day, just finished school. So I don't have much to write about, besides missing seminary. I was wondering if any of you think it would be better to write about the day before each slice, or writing in the evening before you go to bed? Both ways you get more to write about.
If any of you say my last post you would know that my aunt and her family came out here to visit. Well, having another 4 toddlers- baptism aged kids makes the house much more messy and hectic, but I don't regret them coming out. They used to live in Provo Utah, so we were able to come out and visit every now and then, but they moved to Texas.

I totally agree Shayna. Gratitude helps you to focus on the things you do have and not on what you don't have. God gives us everything we have and He will be more inclined to give us more if we give Him thanks for what He gave us and we use it in the way it was meant to be used. Gratitude helps you to be happy.

Some of the people/groups that I would love to meet and or see are Vocal Point, Studio C, Jenny Phillips, Dave Nibley, The Piano Guys, Alex Boye, Eclipse 6, David Archuletta, and Gentri. I have met and or seen some of these people and I'm always amazed at how "normal" they are. Their lives have been blown up to be great and fantastic and I idolize them. Ah, if only you could simply see through the longing eyes of your choice creature, and be what they are. To see the trees look like blades of grass from your height, to feel the waters glide off of your skin as you swim through, to hear the birds singing in the canopies above, to smell the dust of the desert sand, and to taste the cold snow melting in your mouth. These beings who can fly, swim, and do what ever they can with what they have been given would appear to have a much more enjoyable life than our own. We think birds are more blessed because they don't have to worry about the cares of men, and can spread their wings to the skies. But, the other species can never experience love, truth, happiness, or all those other characteristics meant solely for the human race. We don't need wings to fly, or flippers to swim, we can do all that and more, for we have been made dominant over the entire earth.

I’ve started taking walks through the park we live like five seconds away from and every time I go I’ve started to appreciate life more though the time I spend outside.
Just today while walking my dog over and sitting on the little green hill that I’ve come to enjoy I got to see a falcon land in one of the pine trees and got to watch it in genuine wonder.
I’m so grateful God gives us moments and times to find joy in something as simple as a walk in the park or watching a falcon consider its surroundings.

For my birthday (My birthday is in October) he sent me a package that had cookies inside that they usually eat at Christmas time and they were so good! For his birthday I sent him Twinkies and Reese's Peanut Butter cups. They don't have those things over there! It was so cool and fun. I love getting letters.

  30. Pondering what has been done in the past I came across this quote. I thought how it perfectly embodied all of the sacrifices that have happened throughout all of our history.
"In great deeds, something abides. On great fields, something stays. Forms change and pass; bodies disappear; but spirits linger, to consecrate ground for the vision-place of souls. And reverent men and women from afar, and generations that know us not and that we know not of shall come here. To ponder and to dream. And the power of the vision shall pass into their souls."

Do you ever get that feeling where you have a million ideas flying through your head, but you don't know what to write?I mean, lamps are cool. but I don't think today is the day for an existential connection to an electrical light-giver. Perhaps I could write about my lovely pencil that I stole from Tony... "The Pencil Chronicles: a sketchy adventure." No, not today. Well then, I guess I have used up my writer's block slice this year. Maybe those optional projects aren't so bad after all...

  33. My dearest Jonathan,
As I sit here, in the tree in which our names are carved, I think of you. Your dreamy face and luscious dark hair, those glittering blue eyes under whose gaze I have always melted. The way I have so many times been captivated by your presence, do haunt my mind as a beautiful memory. So long have I been a victim of the spell of our true love, caged by the bonds of the distance between us. Long have I waited to be reunited with you, to once again join our souls.
Yet, as I sit on this limb, I also think about how these passions, which used to be so frequent, are now fled from me. They have faded off to what I now understand to be indifference. Yes, it has been far too long, John. I can no longer be so disengaged from the rest of the world because one man wishes to keep my heart. I want to live my life again. I want freedom. It is decided. No, I do not love you. I don't expect to ever renew those past emotions. Especially since I have found someone else: Jonny, the love of my existence. Goodbye, John. You are under no obligation to respond to this letter. In fact, I wish to cut off all contact immediately.
-Indifferently, and no longer yours, Cat

To beautiful mug Sister Jackson made got me remembering about my mugs. This past Christmas our family started a fun little tradition. Instead of just buying gifts that you might want or something, we made our gifts. I was so excited for this! First, I love crafts and doing hands-on things. So, I imediately got to Pinterest and got to work. It was more about working hard to achieve a goal you set for someone to enjoy the outcome of your achieved goal. We totally forgot about receiving our own gifts and just got enveloped in service. Anyway, one of the gifts I did made were 12 mugs with the family members names on them. Along with other crafts that I created. It was so fun to watch them open up their gifts. When we truly envelop ourselves in service for others we feel Christ's love and joy.

When she was younger, I don't know exactly how old she was, she went to an Elvis concert. She must have been up front or something because one way or another she kissed Elvis on the lips! I think she said he just kissed a line of girls really quick but still! Not very many people can say they've kissed Elvis so thats cool!

Your eyes are animated, and your voice is filled with emotion! You have an amazing talent for acting, and you are developing more and more all the time. I was done. Last chapter, last page, last word, I’d read them. Laughter bubbled up, not because the book had been especially funny, not really for any reason - except I was going to burst with the sunny emotion bounding around inside me if I didn’t laugh. It’s too late to be loud, Em, hush, I reminded myself. I tried to be silent, but the occasional tiny squeaks squirted out. I had not imagined this would be my reaction when I’d been told to read it. In fact, I’d been hesitant, uncertain of what I was getting myself into, and unsure the book would be worth the time I spent on it. Funny me. The library trip had been late Monday afternoon, and I finished the hefty-sized sequel by early Tuesday afternoon. Oh, goodness, it had been waaaaay too long since I’d enjoyed a read this much. This much glee, this much explosive happiness inside, I loved it; it was why I read books in the first place. The overwhelming love of an action is what will motivate a hobby into a talent. I read, and write, because of the joy it fills me up with.

I needed to go to the temple but the day of everything seemed to go very wrong... That always happens when I try to go to the temple. Anyone else? I love temples. I'm grateful for the peace a trip to the temple can bring me. I know that someday I can be sealed to my husband in a temple and because my parents were sealed we can all live together forever. 1. Everything should feel to go wrong when you try to go to the temple, because then you can know the adversary is working his hardest to have you not go, which is all done in vain for God's power supersedes his own. Though the process to the temple may be difficult, what goes on inside is certainly worth the trouble getting there, and will definitely leave you with that sense that you have done right.

Probably the biggest struggle of learning a language isn’t learning the words, its learning the grammar. Language Grammar is VERY important, especially in Japanese. The Japanese culture has little room for slang (with the exception of texting) and has a upheld a high-standard of speech. I am actually great with pronunciation, with almost any language, as I can actually hear myself speak, which not many can do. It is fun though, don’t fret!

Surfing, one of the fun things you can do in Hawaii. I love to feel the energy of the wave under my feet. I like the waves that are smooth and graceful, it feels like your walking on water gliding around majestically. There is waves that I need to swim very fast in order to get on it, but some of them that are strong just push me effortlessly toward the shore. Only one time I went into a tube not that huge just the ones that you bend down to go inside the wave and that view was awesome. The worst thing that could happen when all the water that is sucked into the wave, then you fall off the board and hit the sand then the wave pounds you after that. Surfing is a very cool thing to do on weekends, It wouldn’t be the same Hawaii without surfing.

Someday is a lie. We tell it to ourselves all the time. Someday I will do this, Someday I will change, I’ll get to that someday. These are all empty promises we make ourselves. We can’t just wait around for someday to come. We choose when that day is. The more we say someday is the more it gets put it off. We have to start today. We can’t just wait and say the future will be different. Your future is now! Make today be someday.

  55. Brother DeGraff said something recently that really hit me. He said something that implied that God never changes, and if he changed the course of history in the past, he can change it now. I realized that there are SO many instances in my life where Heavenly Father guided the events of my day so that things would work out smoothly in the future. Sometimes I don’t recognize it until later, but it is still a wonderful thing. I was reading the book “Of Plymouth Plantation” by William Bradford and nearly every page had some mention of the “grace of God” or the “hand of Providence.” Now I make it a priority to mention something that the Lord did for me each day in my journal. I am so grateful that our world is governed by Higher Powers than the sometimes thoughtless leaders on earth today.

I live in Texas, south Texas. We live so far south it takes a good day to get into any other state but my love for hockey is strong enough that sitting in a rolling metal coffin for eight hours is totally worth it. I say that because the closest NHL team is eight hours away. We used to have a minor league team just a few minutes away but they got moved so now there’s no hockey down here in the valley. When we found out that one of our favorite hockey teams, the New York Rangers were going to come to play the Stars in Dallas we couldn’t pass that opportunity up. After traveling eight hours we finally got to the hotel. The next morning we could hardly wait for the game to start. We were so excited that we walked to the rink four hours early. While we were waiting we got to buy an awesome puck and look around the store they had. They also had a band come and play outside the rink. About 30 minutes before they opened the doors we were walking around and we saw this guy standing in his suit and we were like, “No way!” It was one of the Ranger’s player’s. We got some pictures with him and then went on our way. As soon as they opened the doors we ran in and went down to where the Rangers were going to skate out onto the ice. We went there so fast that we were the first ones there so we got some really close spots. Even though we waited another 30 minutes we got to be right there while they skated out onto the ice. This was absolutely amazing standing so close to people that we are such big fans of. The game was flipping amazing! It was back and forth the whole time but the Rangers ended up coming out on top winning 3-2.

This is coming from Idaho where they say we only have 2 seasons road construction and winter. Anyway now that we have that not true joke out of the way I can tell you about today. I was mowing the lawn and the lawn mower kept breaking down on me because we have steep hills and really thick grass, plus it ran out of gas on the huge yard we have so i had to walk up the very big hill in the yard couldn't find gas in the garage and finally found some somewhere else and walked back down the hill and gassed it up. It takes about 1 hour and a half to mow our yard and that's with a mower that you can steer and don't push.

A few weeks ago we had really bad flooding, but luckily it hasn't flooded to badly since then. But today was different. The sun shined and the clouds went away. It was still hot and humid (as it always is in Houston) but it was much prettier outside. It didn't last long, as the clouds came back by the evening, but it was wonderful while it lasted.

We have a giant flood here in pearland and its literally trapping people inside their homes without electricity. As I was watching the rain fall, and idea brick was thrown at my head (not literally)! I ran to the door and paused just a moment considering what I was about to do. Swiftly I turned around and yelled “be back later!” then I ran out the front door into the pouring rain. Within 30 seconds I was drenched. I felt as if gravity was heavier for the rain, because when they hit the ground it was very loud and hard. It felt the same on my skin.
