Also, please remember that tomorrow begins National Poetry Month. The writing expectations will differ from the Slice of Life Story Challenge.
Here is what to expect:
1. The first blog post will open on April 1. One blog post will open each week instead of every day.
2. You will write one "super post" per week. You determine which day you will complete the assignment, so long as it is complete by Saturday night of the corresponding week before 9:00 p.m.
3. Five poems will be required the first week.
4. Only four poems will be required the last week.
After the first week:
1. A blog post will open up each Monday instead of every single day.
2. Super posts must include seven poems representing the seven days included in one week.
3. By the end of the month, you should have posted a total of 30 poems (for an average of one per day).
What will be the same as the Slice of Life Story Challenge:
Building on our classroom community that we have developed, comments are encouraged. Remember to be encouraging, sharing, and positive. Any negativity will be deleted and participation points will be taken away.
At the end of National Poetry Month:
Each student will present their best/favorite poem to the class. You can create a YouTube video*, a dramatic audio recording, or read it aloud in class. For DE's, if you do not have the ability to do a shareable video or audio recording, you may send the poem to me, and I will read it for you. This last option is a last resort because you will not experience the public speaking portion of the assignment.
*Please set all YouTube videos that you create for class to "Unlisted" and share the link with me via email. Doing so will ensure your privacy on the internet.
Be prepared to present your poem in whichever form you choose on Monday, May 4, 2015.
This assignment will be worth 100 points total:
60 points for the poems (2 points per poem)
40 points for the presentation.
It's been a long month. It's been 31 days, 744 hours, 44640 minutes. I find it strange to think that so much time has passed since I first sat at this computer and entered Slice 1. I feel like a character from a book, looking back at the way they were before their journey.
ReplyDeleteAs '...the fingers of my mind drift over ...'(D.2) the month, I realize that it has been a satisfactory journey. Every one of those 31 days, I wrote. And every one of those entries are worthy of appreciation and gentle pride. Why?
I channeled thoughts, ideas, and feelings, out of my mind and heart into something amazing - words. I discovered creativity in myself that I didn't realize I had before. I fought back writing-block dragons, conquered the hordes of non-productivity, managed mountains of doubt and fear and emerged in one piece, better than before. I was thoughtful, descriptive, inspiring, humorous, passionate, eloquent and so on and so forth in explaining myself. Looking back, I see I shared slices of life along this month's path, but more than that, I shared pieces of me.
It's been a long month. And I'm glad of it. I've learned about myself, and I've grown in my writing. This month was a wonderful adventure, disguised as a "school assignment". No longer a mere hobbit in the Shire or a simple schoolchild playing hide-and-seek in a wardrobe, I am a Wordbearer now, a Queen of Writing.

DeleteSeems like this assignment has helped more than one person find creativity and light in there life. It's funny how that worked. Maybe because this is the first time I have ever been assigned to do something like this before. Then again, this is my first year attending Liahona. I feel the same way when you said you "feel like a character from a book, looking back at the way they were before their journey." It seems like the longer something lasts, the more time you are given to love it. Anyway, great slice...

DeleteI love what you said, Emma, and what you replied, Caleb. I loved Slice of Life from day 2, at the very least. Now I feel like I am saying goodbye to an old friend that I will never see again. I know my plans lead away from Liahona next year, so I won't be able to do this with you anymore. Maybe if she keeps the same website I can participate anyways...? I hope so.
This month has been amazing. Because of our slices of life, I remember fun memories from my past, and I have gotten to know more about the other students. At the beginning of the month I thought slices of life to just be an "assignment". But now that it's over I see that it was an opportunity to pull the DE students and the academy students together. It's been great to share my stories with other students, because it has really helped me with my writing skills, and it has brought us all closer as a school. I've had a lot of fun with this assignment. I can't wait until we do something like this again!
ReplyDeleteI didn't really know any of the DEs before the SOLSC, but now I feel like I have something in common with all y'alls.
DeleteI will have so much fun in Poetry Month!
In my opinion, and being a DE, this challenge really did bring us all together in writing!

I missed a few days over spring break because I was in Las Vegas, but I tired to keep up with it. Overall its been fun :)

I agree I have had so much fun and I hope to do this again next year
DeleteI have had so much fun writing all of these slices. Even though I didn't do it every day, I have gotten to know the other students and it feels like they are all friends. I can totally agree with everyone who thinks that they have had some progression in their writing, because I think I have. For some days it is hard to write, but on other days it just comes. I am excited for poem month, it will be a lot of fun to read all those poems. However many students there are, times 30. Wow.

ReplyDeleteI gained some great writing skills! I now can easily brainstorm and quickly jot down ideas, and then refine them so they become better. I can build off of previous ideas that I have had. I now know how to write a blog post! I've never done that before! I can write good meaty paragraphs about the topic that I enjoy, and writing a topic that I would want to share with other people. It's been an enjoyable experience. I am grateful to Sister Jackson for having us do this challenge because it has built me a little as a writer.
Same here. This is the first time I have participated in a blog post as well. It has helped me to brainstorm and write creativity in a more polished form. It has also helped me see the Lord's Hand in my life more often than I had thought of before.
DeleteI hate this class
ReplyDeleteI hate how I have to think
I hate the way I talk
When I am upset
I get to the point
When all I want is to
Go home.
But I must be here
To help and serve
And be part of something
Bigger than myself
Something that really matters
I hate how much I care
Sometimes it hurts
Too much
So much that I can hardly get past
The pain of loving and caring
And being a person
With such a big heart

That is really deep. It is deep and beautiful like the ocean. I like it.
Your slice reminds me of part of a book I read. You will recognize it most likely, it comes from the Republic of Plato and it is called "The Cave." What basically happens in the story is Socrates describes an allegory about a group of people who have lived, chained to the wall of a cave, all of their lives facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall by things passing in front of a fire behind them, and begin to ascribe forms to these shadows. According to Socrates, the shadows are as close as the prisoners get to viewing reality. He then explains how the philosopher is like a prisoner who is freed from the cave and views the sunlight. It is blinding to him at first, but as he slowly becomes accustomed to the light he comes to the realization that the shadows on the wall are not constitutive of reality at all, as he can perceive the true form of reality rather than the mere shadows seen by the prisoners. It's way more deep than that, but that's the basics. Here is a link to a picture someone drew of the allegory: http://screencast.com/t/4mOKQeeLrF
DeleteAnd here is a link to the full story: http://webspace.ship.edu/cgboer/platoscave.html
True teachers can be likened to the man who escaped from the cave. They could continue to go out into the world and live a more comfortable life, but they choose to return to those in the cave and free them from the shackles of ignorance--namely us, the students.
The sacrifice that you and other teachers go through for us is truly great. And we are forever grateful, even if at times we may seem apathetic.
Thank you so much for the time and love you put into doing this incredible blog and all that you do for us Sister Jackson, you are truly an amazingly wonderful teacher and person!

I wrote this poem during fourth period as an example of how to take an idea and run with it. Someone blurted out to write "I hate this class" as a joke, but I took the challenge. I want everyone to know that I do not hate this class. I truly love it. I was going to delete it and use it during poetry month, but I will leave it as is here, but turn around and refine it for poetry month. Thank you to each of you who have said such kind, comforting, and supportive things here.

ReplyDeleteEven though it was hard to find time to remember to post on the days required, I think that this assignment really helped me. The only way to get better at something, in this case writing, is by practice. Famous sports players only become famous because of laborious practice. In order to learn an instrument you must be consistent in daily practice. If you want to do well on the ACT, or you want to live a life of success you must practice. And every time you fall, fall forward and get back up again. This quote by Samuel Smiles is truly inspiring:
"We learn wisdom from failure much more than from success; we often find out what will do by finding out what will not do; and probably he who never made a mistake never made a discovery."
This Slice of Life is an opportunity to practice your skills in writing, preparing you for life, and success from failures.
It's so true practice is the only way to become good at anything and this has given both the highs and lows of succeeding and failing at time but was all worth it. Thanks for the great quote and insight!

The poem: The truth no matter how harsh.
By Jocelyn Crofts.
She opened her computer and opened a tab.
She glances down, her assignment in hand.
She typed on the keys with click, click, bing.
Nothing had ever seemed so soothing.
18 days later, faulty at least.
I crave something more then typing something about me.
I've never felt like I wasted more of my time,
then when I was assigned to write a slice of my life.
So now instead of losing 4 hours of my life, doing all my home work right, I lose that and at least half of the night. "I'm so sleep deprived!"
I have a family, I have chores, I have responsibilitys I can't ignore,
But now as if that wasn't enough I don't even have enough time to catch up. I don't hang out with my friends I think school work is more important then them. That doesn't mean I don't regret, I love them like I love soccer, but yet, you wont find me intentionally slacking off for it.
I love to read and I love to write, how do you think I do my homework,
"with my mind!"
Most of my life is a code of words, I've never been without, my opinion now you've heard.
I don't just have school work to do, you must understand I have young woman's too.
And do you expect me to take from the time, I give to God, the parts of my life, should I also concede my life and time to you, the time for him and not for you.
How will I praise the God I love so dear, if every Sunday I sleep right through, because my body and mind demand I pay for the time I spent on you.
Please forgive, if my words sound harsh.
This slice of life experience was fun in the start, I fear though that time has degraded my hart, I hope we can create a new fresh start.
Sorry, I've always spoken from the hart, I hope I haven't broken anyone's hart.
Hopefully we can someday restart this game I have come to play unintentionally, now excuse me as I go say sorry to my parents company, is rude to leave guests waiting.

NO AUTHORS NOTE...SORRY.
At least you were honest:)
DeleteNice poem. I also found myself writing and posting on Slice of Life that interfered with my own personal life. My parents had begun to think I was addicted to it or something. But when I would assure them it was for school, they would have this blank expression reading "how could you possibly spend so much time doing school?" I wish it didn't end, and yet, without the end, there would be no beginning for the poetry month...
DeleteMaybe you just took too much time on it. I'm sure this poem took at least a bit of extra time instead of a quick reflection paragraph as assigned. I hope you feel better about poetry month.

ReplyDeleteI’ve actually really enjoyed doing the Slice of Life challenge. It was difficult to remember to do it and I had many make-up days but I loved being able to practice free writing on what I wanted to! I loved getting to read everyone else’s slices and get to know you all better! Now onto poetry!
Same here! Especially being a fellow DE, this was a really good opportunity to get to know other people by their writings.

Slice of Life is like a little tiny life. It is random, happy, sad, caring, and in the case of my slices, all mixed up posted late on the wrong days in the wrong order in the most confusing way possible because you really have no idea what you're doing. But also like life, there is a greater purpose, and we have grown as a class and as an online community through these experiences.
All mortal life must come to and end. Our precious little Slice of Life Warriors blog is taking its final breaths, but it has affected many people and we will remember it. Don't mourn the death, but rejoice in all that it has taught us! Brothers and sisters, we have before us an opportunity to change for the better. Let not this assignment be in vain!
I implore you for the sake of all we hold dear.

ReplyDeleteWe did it guys! I really enjoyed reading and writing the slices, I'm hoping I will enjoy National Poetry Month as much, even though I'm not all that poetic. Maybe I'll get really good at poetry and be able to think of poems on the spot, and maybe I'll just find out that poetry isn't my thing. Either way, I'm excited to see how it turns out!
On another note, I really think that this was a good experience for everyone that participated in Slice Of Life, maybe we'll do it again next year!
Way to have a positive attitude for something to which you are not sure.

ReplyDeleteThe further into Slice of Life we have gotten, I have noticed more positive slices and less negative(ish?) slices; I remember at the beginning there was every now and then a handful of slices about being busy, having to wake up early, not knowing what to write about, or being sick and things like that.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with writing things like that. But on the other hand, it is so much more enjoyable to read positive and/ or uplifting slices rather than reading about someone's troubles. Again, that's fine. I am just simply saying that it is a lot better to read something happy. All I am trying to point out is that I like how recently everybody's slices have been happier and positive.
I think that has partially come from the SOLSC because it has helped us to be able to learn things about others, and share our thoughts and feelings! As challenging as it has been, having to keep up with the blog often, I am glad to have had the chance to be a part of this and to become a better writer.
That's true. I noticed that as well. It has been a wonderful experience and everything. Thank you for you Slice of Life today!
DeleteCaleb A, DE, P3
DeleteWhen one writes something positive, they are bringing the audience up with them to where they are in their state of happiness. When people write about their problems, they lower everyone else's happiness until it matches their own. That could be done by the audience being able to relate to what the writer is saying or the sheer grief in reading those sad or angry experiences the writer went through. Its not good to write something negative unless there is a positive outcome that quickly follows. Nice Post!

ReplyDeleteI think that the biggest thing that the Slice of Life Challenge has taught me, is humility. When I first heard that it was going to be required, I had a pretty bad attitude about it. However, as the challenge progressed, I really started to enjoy posting, as well as reading other's posts. It made me realize that even if a challenge or assignment seems dumb at first, it may have the potential to be a great experience, so there is no reason not to humble myself and give it my all.
I totally agree Joseph, when I first started it felt really frustrating and kind of annoyed me that I had to do it every day. But I am glad that I did and glad at how much of a pleasant experience it turned out to be.

ReplyDeleteI learned that these Slices have taught me how to become a faster writer. I enjoyed having this experience so that I could learn how to become a better writer as a whole. I thought that it was hard onced started writing every day. It took me a long time to write because I am A.D.D. and I have a hard time doing things like this online. I am a hands on person. However, when I did got into the habit and started enjoying it, I was able to write long as though I would never write that way again. I enjoyed writing when it was about something I am passionate about. Nevertheless, if it is something I am not passionate about, then I would have a more difficult time writing. I do think that somehow, it was preparing me for the ACT.
And I have enjoyed the time I got to read others posts too. I feel like I know our classes better because of it.
DeleteCaleb A, DE, P3
DeleteI think everyone had their difficult moment while in the process of posting something. When we write about something passionate, it is almost as though we are forcing ourselves to stop so that we don't go over the boundaries. I think the main purpose in doing this was to strengthen our field of brain-storming as well as self-encouragement, which it succeeded in doing.

ReplyDeleteI really liked writing all these slices! I'm actually sad that it's over. Writing a slice a day made me feel better for some reason. I realized how fun it is to write and how much you can learn from it. I liked using all the different writing styles. I also really liked reading the other slices and seeing hoe much talents all my friends have! I'm proud of my own work too, I took each of my slices and copied them into a document so I have them all together. I really enjoyed writing each day and think I will maybe write a few more odd slices every now and then. Thank you Sister Jackson for inspiring me to do this!

DeleteI feel like this assignment of doing a slice a day made me think more creative. It made me want to create a picture and image in peoples head, I wanted them to see what I saw or be able to almost taste what I was eating. I tried to do this as best I could because I love reading and I love how when you read books it always creates something spectacular in your mind. DeleteI agree with you when you said that doing 'Slice of Life' helped us to become more creative; to do something different than what had already been told. I still remember reading one of your posts that described a Sunday dinner with the lemon-squeezed fish. I myself had little doubt that I would be able to write every day with a meaningful post, but after doing this, I now know I can. Even a simple thing like a Sunday dinner can be expounded to become something spectacular and thoughtful. It helped to build self-esteem in myself and I am pretty sure, in others as well.
The slice of life challenge has been a lot more fun then I was expecting. It has helped me grow as a writer and reach out of my comfort zone. I have also really appreciated the chance to read everyone's slices and see their writing styles and learn from them. Overall it has been a great experience and I'm glad I had the opportunity to participate.

ReplyDeleteI know some people will probably say that at first they didn't want to do this. I, for one, didn't either want to post a Slice of Life every day. But as I got into it and experienced it more, I really enjoyed it. Reading others' Slices was super fun. I guess I kind of got to know the person and how they think in a way. I made connections and some of the hovered in my mind as I went through my day. As time went on, I was eager and happy to share a slice of my life with my friends. It was a fun experience!
I recently just joined Liahona, and I am grateful for this experience. I have gotten to know a little snippet of everyone's lives and their personalities. It has been a great way to jump in. I have learned things about myself as well as gained valuable insight through others' comments. Now, I go about my day with a state of deeper mental reflection. I look at the little things in a new light. I realize that even just the little things I do every single day can be profound. All it takes is a little push, a dash of imagination, and a handful of words.

ReplyDeleteThe Slice of Life wasn't bad. I kept forgetting to do it but I enjoyed it. If I were to do it again I would try not to get behind. This month has been hectic though and that was part of the reason I kept forgetting. My mind was stuffed and I was trying to catch up and not get behind. Hopefully this next month will not be as crazy.
Who is going to Prom? I am and I recently got my prom dress, now we just need to find something to where over or someone to sew to make it more modest. I am excited for it but also nervous since I won't know a lot of the people there. I am going by myself also so no date to talk to or anything. I know it will be fun though.
So there was my random change of topic for the day. Slice of life was ok but this month has been crazy and this week will be even crazier. That's life, I guess.

ReplyDeleteI will tell you what I learned from doing the Slice of Life story challenge in a poem, in preparation for national poem month.
There were many important things I learned while doing SOLSC.
But the most important thing to me is to make sure to have charity.
'Cause charity never faileth; it's the pure love of Christ.
Charity suffereth long, is not puffed up, and is always kind and nice
If you don't have any charity, then it will not be well with thee.
Nothing is what you will be, if no charity is yours you see.
So get on your knees, and pray for Christ's pure love.
When you've learnt some charity, then it's always enough.
Make sure to believe, hope, endure; in the end you'll stand up tall.
Satan will have no more power, 'cause charity's the greatest thing of all.

Delete"Since I am a DE, [Slice of Life] has really made me feel apart of the class."
Agreed. When one is a DE, it is more than difficult to have a thoughtful conversation from someone else in there same school. This blog website has made that possible. Even a little snippet of someones life is more than what we would know about them without it...

ReplyDeleteI would like to commend everyone that participated in this Slice of Life. I have found it enjoyable to read each exquisitely written slice that in my heart, it has formed into a wonderful apple pie. I was able to learn a little about each of you, despite the distance that prohibits any communication. I have read poems, haiku's, auto-biographies, testimonies, fears, desires, dreams, lessons, and insightful knowledge. I would also like to commend all that were able to post a Slice every day for 31 days. Good Job enduring to the end and reaching beyond the minimum goal.
It wasn't me finding my own creativity in myself that helped me to push on. It wasn't the raffle that is for all who wrote every five days. It was because of the community this blog, "Warrior Slices," created. I felt like I was in the school, communicating with everyone in it. Something I was concerned about before entering this school was the lack of friendship I would find in it since this is the first time I have ever been to a school that records its classes. I have felt the love that can only be found in the temple and church just within this one class at Liahona.
Another thing I noticed was that on this blog site, it appeared that more people were open with their own lives rather than holding anything back or away. They truly were creating a Slice of their own, unique life. When Sister Jackson noted that we were to do the 'Slice of Life' program, my heart sank. But after the first day, my appreciation and joy of having it climbed until it reached the point where I began getting on multiple times in one day. I know that Sister Jackson was sent to be our teacher for a reason and purpose. I thank all who participated in 'Warrior Slices' and most importantly, Sister Jackson for making it all possible.
Beautifully put about the whole experience from start to finish. Thank you for you wonderful job and to you too for doing "Warrior Slices".

For me, this has been an interesting thing. I want to take the light I have gained and turn it into a blaze that can never be calmed, one that is strong and willing to look deep within to find the story in every day we live.
In all, I have grown like a sapling into a pine, this adventure has been long and hard at times; But the road is worth every step I took, for when I turned back it was not the hard moments I faced but the joy of the journey I have only just tasted.

DeleteA pine, when it grows to adult, reaches straight up into the sky. I lived in Arizona and my neck would ache just by trying to find the top of them. As each day progresses, I would have to reach deeper and deeper, like you said, in the pond of inspired writers because all the easy things were already used on previous days. This month really has passed me by...
I personally felt it helped me. Helped me become a better writer. Helped me learn to not give up in a sense. Helped me understand how and why to write. It helped me appreciate writing more. It helped me to open up more and tell my story and help others more. It was a fast month and I wish it could have lasted longer. It helped me most of the time, sometimes it was a pain in the neck and interrupted other things. Sometimes I needed a brake, other times I needed to write more. I never want to stop writing.

DeleteI really wish it wouldn't stop too. At the beginning, I was like, How is this gonna work? How am I gonna do the rest of my school too? I actually began using this as an excuse for not doing other schoolwork though! I love it so much! Again, wish it wouldn't end.
Working out is something I love to do. It has changed who i am in so many ways because of the benefits i get from it. I challenge you to workout and recognize the results.

Writing for this month has really helped me grow as a writer. I feel like it has helped me figure out how to write about something when there is nothing to write about. It was difficult sometimes due to the inability to think of something to write about or maybe just forgetting to write for that day, and then having to make up the missed day by writing two or sometimes three slices a day. In all this experience has been really great because I’ve been able to share experiences, and in return, read experiences, ideas and feeling of other classmates, which has helped me feel like I know everyone on a more personal basis.
I agree, it was difficult as times to think of something to write. What helped me was to brain storm a list of stories from my past and write them down. Then I could go to them and have something to write about instead of looking at the screen for 30 minutes and not have any idea what to write about.

ReplyDeleteSlice of Life
I loved righting my Slices of Life it really got me into the grove of writing in my journal. Also I loved reading my friends slices. All in all I think it benefited me, even though it was hard at times.
Everyday is a new day and we meet new people. one day you can meet someone that could potentially become your best friend. when i meet a new person I show the true me because then they will know who I actually am.
ReplyDeleteFinding the beautiful in life is much easier then you think if you can take the time to look at all the amazing things god created. Whenever I go hiking I take the time to notice all of the neat and amazing things all around. While on my way to school every morning I look at the sunset and how its not the same as yesterdays but its unique just like so many other things.
ReplyDeleteFriendship in my teenage years is what really shapes who i am going to be. Having a good friend helps you out in so many ways because, you turn to them in tough situations instead of your parents. My life is so much better when I surround myself with good friends that are loyal, trustworthy, kind, and fun. when people commit suicide, it usually is a result of feeling unwanted or useless and i think if you have good friends you should never feel that way.

ReplyDeleteMy productivity has gone up because of the fact that I’ve neglected to write every day, or at least not as much as I’m supposed to for Slice of Life. Explanation: shirking my duties has made a more stressful situation for me, but a good learning experience. Doing work from the beginning is always the better route, and pays off in the end.

ReplyDeleteOh my, has this been a stressful month! Not that this assignment has been stressful, but everything else was. I had to catch up on school, actually do math for once in my life, and pretty much Irish Dance every second I wasn't doing those two things. Besides Slice of Life, of course. I'm not sure that Slice of Life has helped me become a better writer, but I feel that I have become part of the class more, me being a DE and watching from home. I feel like this has totally built our classroom community, and I am looking forward to Poetry Month building our community as well. I'm really grateful to all of you who replied to my slices, to Sister Jackson for letting us do this, and for all of your heartfelt slices that have helped me in my life. I feel like even when Poetry Month is over, I will still be getting on to look for my favorite slices, and read them again, and again, and again. I do that with books, and I will definitely do that for this. Thank you all, Sister Jackson especially, and Adieu to Slice of Life.
See you in Poetry Month!
Love you all,
Erin

DeleteOh yeah, the Irish dancer that doesn't approve of Darby o'Gill. Anyway, I agree with your statement that 'Slice of Life' built a community of students who were obligated, or rather, recommended to communicate with each other. It made everyone feel one and united. Can't wait to see what Poetry Month will be like though.

ReplyDeleteProcrastinating is never a good thing. I'm really not looking forward to binging all of this out. We'll see how it goes now. One more post down... a few lot more to go. Oh well. I guess it'll go well.... Let me just say that this wasn't the smartest idea that I've ever had. I didn't really plan for this. And I guess that right there is my problem, too. Alrighty then. One down... A few lot more to go.
Parker Barkdull (Period 3)
ReplyDeleteSecond binge-post! I was thinking that I would start a series. A binge-post series. I think that I'd get docked points for creativity. Okay, well in that case this will be my one and only sequel. You know this makes me think about how Hollywood is always doing second, watered down versions of good movies that they like to call sequels. If it's of any consequence I think this post is actually more interesting than the first. I guess that makes this an anomaly. Or maybe it makes me a genius. Who knows.
This does make you a genius. Cracks me up! (You were supposed to post one post per day!)

ReplyDeleteI'm not very good at planning things out. Maybe this is evident by the fact that I'm overloading this blog with a bunch of posts on the last day but it goes way beyond this. It's actually something I wish I was better at. I envy people who are well organized and are good at planning things out. It's never been a strong suit of mine. But that's all on me. I should probably work on that... later. Let it be known that I am also a procrastinator.
Honestly, the slice challenge didn't seem that enjoyable to me. It was pretty much just another stressful assignment that I had to do to get a grade. But I guess it was fine in the end.

ReplyDeleteI'm actually really excited to start writing poetry. I don't think many people know this but I actually write a lot on my own time. I love to write fiction, and reading has always been my absolute favorite thing to do. I love to write poetry too. It's so cool to be able to capture so much, and also create so much just from writing words down. I definitely fell in love with story first, but words just kind of came along later. For me they are a sort of package deal. Anyways, I love writing so much.
Parker Barkdull (Period 3)
ReplyDeleteHave you ever been envious of really funny people? I'm pretty sure all the boring people are. I have to admit that I get really jealous... I feel like I'm revealing way too much of myself through these slices. Oh well, here it goes anyways. I really do get envious. But something that really bugs me is when you actually DO manage to come up with something funny after you've strained your non funny, boring brain to say something worth hearing and NO ONE HEARS YOU. This is only the beginning. What about when someone takes advantage of the moment? What if they say the exact same thing you said? I could go on and on but to me it's not even worth it.... Let's just say that this is a major pet peeve of mine.

ReplyDeleteNapoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. I just love Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. They're some of the most genius comedies of all time.... And yes a lot of people hate them. But then again a lot of people love them. There really isn't any in between. But then again, it won't be all that funny unless you're really immature like me. There must be a looooot of immature people out there too, though. Anyways, random tangent. Point is I just love those movies so much.
They are awesome movies! I am overly mature, and I enjoy them very much. I don't care for some of the crude bits, but all the rest is hilarious. P.S. I own the Nacho Libre soundtrack.

ReplyDeleteI always try to picture what it's like to see through someone else's point of view. Certain things make me feel certain ways (no duh.) But I always look at someone and say, "why and how does that make you feel how you feel?" I always find it so fascinating. I kind of wish I could try that some time. And sometimes I wish I could only so I could get out of me for a while because I feel like that would be good... or I feel like I really need that because I'm in a weird state of mental breakdown and I'm trying to find a way out.... Anyways. [Anyone notice I use the word anyways a lot?]

ReplyDeleteWHY HAVEN'T I TALKED ABOUT LORD OF THE RINGS YET!? It's okay, I'm fine. Let me just say that if I could meet one author ever, it would be J.R.R. Tolkien. I actually would love to become a professor of Tolkien Literature. I find it so fascinating how one person could create a whole mythology, language, lore, history, culture--MULTIPLE of these by himself. A lot of people call what he did "epic fantasy" but in truth it was much more. He even had a word for it: Mythopoeia. I just love J.R.R. Tolkien.

ReplyDeleteMy height is 5'7", maybe it's 5'8" (hopefully please.) I've never been that satisfied with it. I've always wanted to be just a bit taller. It is a comforting thought to think that Tom Cruise is the same height as me. (And did any of you know that David Archuleta is 5'2"? Pretty crazy.) But it really isn't that bad. I'm glad that I am who I am. It's not really a major concern of mine. I'm glad that I'm me. (Hopefully I hit a growth spurt soon.)
Parker Barkdull (Period 3)
ReplyDeleteIf any of you have ever wondered what that green book is that I carry around all the time is, then I'll tell you! It's actually a writing journal! Like I said earlier I LOVE to write. (And I'm also a complete Tolkien nerd. Yup I'm helpless.) I like to write long hand. There's something very organic about the whole process. I like the feeling of books, too. I'm not one for E-readers and things like that. Anyways, I just felt like that was something worthy of mentioning.

ReplyDeleteWhat do I like to write? I love to write fantasy. I've always loved fantasy. I think it has something to do with how I would always play pirates, and knights when I was younger. It never really left me. It was always something that attracted me so much. So to be specific I love to write epics, or medieval fantasy. I've always been enormously attracted to trees and to the wilderness, and that is something that that genre seems to be abundant with.

ReplyDeleteOne thing that I love to do when I write is to express myself, to escape, and to explore. I love to explore themes, I love to get my ideas out through fiction. I feel like this is mainly accomplished through my characters. Creating certain characters as archetypes and seeing how they mesh with the theme of what I am writing or how they relate to the other characters and their archetypes. It's the people and the characters that I stay for in books. As one of my favorite authors, Brandon Sanderson, says about the genre I work in (fantasy) says, "We come for the world, we stay for the characters." I think this is very accurate.
Julia Talley. Period four.
DeleteI really love reactionary pieces. Y'know, that I might just write as an exercise. Make something up within the (or a separate) plot to see just how your characters would react, even if you don't plan to use what you've written later. Something dramatic... or just big. I feel like it make the characters so much more fleshed-out. Good post, Parker.

ReplyDeleteYou know something that always cracks me up is when people pray for moisture or precipitation. Who calls rain moisture or precipitation in their day to day life? ESPECIALLY MOISTURE. Why is it different when we're talking to God? I know we should be formal and respectful too him... but why do we treat him differently? I know He doesn't get irked by it, but man I sure do. It's pretty funny. Again, just another small thing worth mentioning.
Honestly I do not feel that I learned as much as I thought that I would. It just seemed like another assignment that I had to do to get a good grade on. I would strongly recommend not doing this again. But you do not need to listen to my opinion after all it is not my class.

Now I shall take a long and well deserved break. It's been fun! Now I'm going to move on to something else. Goodbye slice of--that should be capitalized shouldn't it? Goodbye Slice of Life, hello Poetry April! ...That doesn't really flow... Oh well.
The Slice of Life Challenge was an interesting but cool challenge. As many other people have said, I have really enjoyed reading other's slices and learning about people that I go to school with everyday; in person and not in person (DE). I have also liked exploring and tapping into what I really like and am passionate about, and some of my slices have been what I want people to know about me. The writing everyday, if you wanted to, part of this challenge first appeared daunting and intimidating, but once I got into the groove and the habit it got easier, and fresh ideas stated to come in much, much smaller amounts. But I still pulled through. I just want to finish by typing CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who pulled through this challenge; even those of you who procrastinated. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's great that it's helped you find what you're passionate about. People need to figure that out what they like.

I have danced sense I was 3 and it is something I absolutely love and adore to do. Overtime you find that dance isn’t just a sport, an art, or a hobby dance teaches you at very young age how to tell a story using emotion and movement no talking no words on paper. Dance tells you a story or an event that takes place and a dancer has to take that story or that event and make believable to the people watching them. Dance is something I have done my whole life dance is something I love and hope to never stop doing.

Jackson, she is amazing and I am so glad that she is my teacher!
I'm writing on my phone so excuse me if it's short because it may seem long to me.
ReplyDeleteSo first off you told us to write long and what you liked about this and I cannot tell you what I liked about this I mean I hated just about every day I wrote down because of a number of reasons mainly being that I hate writing everyday because it's not what I do. If you ever want to get me, understand that I am a bit Bi Polar when it comes to being known and being hidden. The reason I hated this is because I don't want people to remember me by a dirary or whatever I want people to remember me as a war hero or a successful business man. NOT by the guy that wrote down a piece of poetry confessing my undying hate to this, but I do it because I have too and that is also why I do not like this because it's something I HAVE to do and it doesn't really affect other people so much as being in the military would. Do you know what I want to be in the military? An AFPJ (Air Force Parajumper) because what they do is they risk their very lives to save others and that is what I want to be remembered as; the guy that saved John's life because he was unlucky enough to step on a landmine. So now I'm gonna end this and think of some poetry that will be secretly mocking this whole thing because I have to be a rebel somehow otherwise I'll snap.

ReplyDeleteI learned a very important lesson from this slice of life thing. I learned that excessive postponing of important things is bad. I put this off for a while and had to do like three slices a day to catch up. but none of that matters if you don't turn them in. Turning things in is usually important. But did I? I think you can tell me. Rushing and writing really fast is not a pleasant thing to have to do. I would say that I have learned my lesson and will never do this again, but this happens so often I don't trust myself to say that. Sorry about the lateness.

ReplyDeleteI've enjoyed doing slice of life because it makes me think. I have to decide what I want to write about, so I reflect on my day and actually think about what happened. I normally don't do that. Usually the days just kind of pass in a blur. Participating in slice of life has made me realize that I really have a great life, and I have not been as grateful to God as I could have been. There are so many wonderful little things that happen in day to day life that we really don't think much of until we slow down and observe. This is what slice of life has helped me with.
It is a real surprise to me that some you learn so much from one month. When I was a kid I would write in a journal every single day. I was very good at it. Now, not so much :p. This Slice of Life Story Challenge taught me how to write in a journal again. It is an odd experience to not write for such a long time.
ReplyDeleteI've grown a bit more mature during this. That sounded pretty weird typing. When I was a kid, I was the really brilliant homeschooling kid who had an abnormally large vocab. I was the annoying know it all. About 2 years ago, I decided that I needed to have the kid experience that I never had. So, I went absolutely insane. Becoming the kid that was just "special ed". I didn't like that description of myself...... So I became a bit more mature. I never fully matured..... Until I did this slice of life story challenge. It made me better and I'm really glad you guys helped me in my journey :)

ReplyDeleteWell it has been a interesting month. I'll edmit that I really don't like people reading what I write. I think it's just a problem I have. So this experience has been way out of my comfort zone, but it helped. Just to prove my point a little bit, I have been writing a book for the past seven years but I don't let anyone read it. I don't really like the way I write and I don't show people. But this experience has helped me get out there and write a bunch of random stuff. So yeah I thought that it was good. It was a little hard remembering to slice everyday but I tried to remind myself every chance I got. All in all, it was a fun experience and I got to learn from it.

ReplyDeleteThere were a lot of pros and cons to being apart of the Slice of Life Story Challenge. I thought it was a great idea to be able to sit down and reflect upon the day or upon yourself and just write whatever is on your mind down. Through doing that every day, I grew in the subject of expressing myself. However, sometimes the challenge was a little "cumbersome" in a way. I am a VERY busy person and on quite a few days, I'm not home from 7 A.M. until 8 or 9 P.M. and by then, I am too exhausted to even brush my teeth, let alone sit down and write an appropriate slice of life for the day. So the days that I had to make up slices got me pretty stressed. So, overall, it was pretty stressful for me because of my schedule. But I do feel like I did grow.
Thank you, Sister Jackson for this challenge.
One thing that I learned from doing the Slice of Life everyday was I have a lot of awkward moments. I learned that these are sometimes easier to get over if you stop thinking that they are awkward and start thinking that they are funny. I laugh at myself all the time now. I also learned that things like this really help with character growth and that through your embarrassing yet hilarious moments, we can connect better with others. (Cue socially awkward perspective) You gotta love it :) I agree with Mattaya, it definitely brakes you out of your comfort zone.

ReplyDeleteLet’s get real here! This was a crazy assignment, I could barely handle it. It was really overwhelming- mostly because this month has been one change after another. I can’t believe it! My brother left on his mission, I started my job which was crazy, my Grandipops had a heart attack and a heart surgery, my life has just been a roller coaster (which I’ve never actually ridden on one) of emotions right now. I just can’t believe how much life has changed. Because of this my slices have been a little rough. I didn’t do them on time as I should have and I went back to write about each day because I knew it would be a great history for my future generations. I think I’ll do this again next year- but I’ll be doing it on my own time and I’ll actually do it as it should be done, i.e. every day in March. Overall a good idea, but this year it just didn’t work for me because of how my life has been. Oh well. Better luck next time, and there will be a next time for sure!

"8 I came unto mine own, and mine own received me not; but unto as many as received me gave I power to do many miracles, and to become the sons of God; and even unto them that believed on my name gave I power to obtain eternal life."
Something I've gained from this is helping me get through a writer's block that I've been having. I write a lot of random little stories that I absolutely love. I feel bed for not being able to write nearly as often as I wanted to. Sometimes I'm a huge idiot and I have a huge problem with memory. I literally forget to take my pills in the morning. I want to apologize for not being good with keeping up with everything. Writing is something I really want to be able to accomplish. These little stories help me project my emotions into something that is so beautiful and creative.
ReplyDeleteWow it has been crazy to type so much! I really liked reading so many things about other peoples lives and what they have done over the past month!!! I would do this again.

ReplyDeleteLooking back, I really can see how this can beneficial for the development of a students writing skills. I can't believe I'm already done. If you wish for complete honesty, I actually had some fun doing this. But would never do it again. I'm glad I did it. In a way it reminds me of doing a work out. Before and after hand you don't want to do it. However, you know that it was beneficial. Thank you for the opportunity.

ReplyDeleteWhat I gained from doing Slice of Life was the realization that I like writing my thoughts down. There's something about writing your thoughts down that is strangely therapeutic. Since I often have trouble with my words speaking, writing my thoughts down is a good way to articulate and to figure out what I'm trying to say. Sometimes your mouth doesn't work properly, and you start speaking gibberish. That's were writing down your thoughts comes in.It's a perfect way to figure out what you want to say before you say it. It's almost like I'm discussing a topic with myself.

ReplyDeleteWhat I liked about Slice of Life is the the fact that I got to practice everyday my writing skills. I got to practice formulating ideas, flowing through these ideas, and focusing these ideas into a point or moral. It was also good for me to be able to exercise my ability to use big, non-prosaic words. I've tried to vary my vernacular, though some days I did it better that other days. In the end, I liked just being able to write things. I don't always get to apply that part of my brain everyday, so it was refreshing.

ReplyDeleteI had a lot of fun doing this project. It was fun sharing stories about my life, and hearing about other peoples life. Receiving comments on my post always was fun to see, it was also a lot of fun to read people posts and comment on them.

ReplyDeleteThis slice of life challenge has been incredibly fun. Even though writing is not my strong point and I don’t absolutely love it, I have really enjoyed this challenge. It’s given me the opportunity to stop and think about one single thing, amidst all the turmoil and chaos around me. This life is wonderful and I tend to forget that. Sitting down and putting my thoughts and feelings into words has really helped me remember to slow down and enjoy the simple things in life.

ReplyDeleteOver all I did not enjoy the slice of life challenge. It reminded me that I am not a good writer, it took me a very long time to come up with ideas, and I don't like writing things for the public when I know that the public does not really want to read it. The persistence of the challenge was also difficult for me because I am not a persistent person by nature. In short it caused me a lot of grief but it was probably good for me.
Lets just say, this was not really my area. I struggle with creativity at times. I am fairly good, if I am focusing on one thing and improving it. This however, was a day to day challenge. I had to think of new idea after new idea. I had to try to be thoughtful and produce good work, but I felt rushed. However, I know this was good practice for me. I do have to learn to speed up my writing ability. I just struggle, if I am not proud of what I put out. But there is a point where the assignment has to be put in, no matter what condition it is in. I realize that these are my flaws that need to be improved, and that is my problem. I was so impressed with my fellow classmates who truly excelled in this. I hope to get to that point. I feel like the consistency did me good. At first felt that I got worse as we continued, but only because it became harder to think of ideas. At the same time I felt that very proud that I was able do meet the requirements of this assignment. I feel like I produced good work, and I know that I tried my best. I know that I did not do as well as some of the future authors that we have in Liahona, but I did as well as I could.

I have never been out of the country. I have always wanted to go to Ireland. I have seen pictures and I think it is so ridiculously beautiful! It is so green! My happy perfect place has always been green grassy hills in my mind so it sounds like heaven to me. And don't even get my started on the accents that they have there!
ReplyDeleteOh that wasn't supposed to be for this day! ^^^^ That slice right there! That was for day 20! So just pretend like it is there!(:
DeleteI really liked this challenge because it caused me to reflect over my life and the positive things I have done in my past. I also thought about some life goals that I hadn't paid much attention to lately. Thank you for giving me this learning opportunity and being such a great teacher! I think that I have really progressed as a creative writer as well as an academic one.
ReplyDeleteI think that my writing ability has increased dramatically! I also feel that this challenge will help me stay in good habits! I need to be writing a journal at least once a week. I enjoyed sharing little snippets about my life. I also enjoyed reading about all of your lives! I hope that you have a good summer!
