ReplyDeleteHard Tack is an ancient and resourceful snack used way back in the American Revolution and Civil War. It is staler than rock and tasteless as cardboard when dry. But what I learned about it when I participated at Mountain Man, a four-day boy-scout camping trip I went to in Texas, was that if you put it in your mouth and suck on it, after some time, it becomes softer than gram-crackers soaked in refrigerated milk and tastes like a piece of white bread. It was used because of its easy maintenance and efficient storage. Some things in life need softening before its true colors shine forth. Don’t judge a book by its cover. You could have had a shy friend who now makes you laugh or you could have had a nemesis that now helps lift your burdens. If you had not taken that first step to show love to them, you never would have tasted their true character and never would broken the ice with them. Just like hard tack, you must first soften and help your friends feel more comfortable before you became the best of friends.
That was an awesome twist on the end. Great job!
DeleteGreat story, and great moral! I can totally relate to that: "don't judge a book by it's cover..." stuff. :)

I had an amazing mutual activity last night. The Mia Maids went to go listen to a Holocaust survivor, Marion Blumenthal Lazan. She was incredible. She travels around the United States talking about her experience in the concentration camps when she was a mere 10 years old. What I loved is that she doesn't dwell on her past, she uses her experiences to educate others about freedom. The thing that struck me the most was she talked about many of the same principles that Brother DeGraff does. It helped me realize that there are some principles of freedom that are universal and that are, sadly, not understood enough by the majority of people. I realized how grateful I am for (1) my wonderful life and (2) the wonderful education I am getting at Liahona. I cannot think of another school anywhere that has a crew of such passionate teachers all gathered in one place.
ReplyDeleteOh, one more thing. Marion wrote a fairly short book called "Four Perfect Pebbles". I encourage you to read it. It was amazing to personally meet an "Anne Frank" that lived to tell her story.

DeleteI would love to hear a story from a first-hand source like that. No one, besides Br. DeGraff, has talked to me about it and although I have heard a lot about it, I wouldn't mind hearing more. Sadly, I fear that what happened to the Jews will happen to the LDS members in the future to come. That's why we must prepare to not be in a state of confusion and without knowledge, but in a unshakable testimony.
That sounds like a really cool experience!

we have been learning about Davy Crockett lately and i have just realized how awesome he was! Me and my brother have been making little "books" and I have made a world war I, world war II, American Revolution, and am working on a Greek Mythology workbook. The next book will be like a personal hero book and then i can put Davy Crockett in it. Last night my family watched a movie about how he had a major part in ending the Indian war, helped settle a western fort, and I realized how they settled brawls - by brawling! He could also put one musket ball on top of the other (like shoot one, and put one more on top of that!). I also started a book on Benedict Arnold. He was a Daredevil when he was young. One story is when he went to one of those mills with the water wheel and jumped on it and went up, around, upside-down, underwater, back up, around, upside-down, underwater, and back up! Right now in the book he is invading Canada. Yeah, sounds crazy, but that was the British's only way of attacking the northern colonies, so he attacked them!both of these guys are awesome!

ReplyDelete-------My-Slice-of-Life-------
My fingers flew as I raced the clock typing the program that was so needed for my business to work out. I knew the risks of making just one mistake; my business would die down slowly but surely. If I did not get this program on the app store before noon this day, I would have to go back to my old company with the horrible boss, which was one of the main reasons I quit. Suddenly I had a strange feeling that my insides were churning up. They were boiling, mixing, blending with each other. I was stopped short on my work by abrupt excruciating pain. My stomach was turning into microchips and wires. My lungs were turning into processors. My ears became serial ports and my eyes were made into cameras. My nerves were all transformed into copper-plated jumper wires from my brain, which was a microprocessor, the mother chip. All of the sudden, I was not Mr. Meyers the math teacher any more. I had been morphed into JACOB MEYERS, HUMAN COMPUTER. How would I teach my classes the next day? I was like a robot when I went home to have dinner with my family in the evening. I moved, talked, and ate like a robot. Being a father of 7, I had a serious duty to teach my children that I could not fulfill, for I was a mindless robot who obeyed only typed commands. The next day, while I attempted to teach the kids in my math class, one of the kids, James, who had his netbook open told me, through programming, that we would not have any more tests for the rest of the school year. Since I did not have a brain of my own anymore, I had to do just the thing that James told me to do. The kids were euphoric, for I was now programmed to make all of their test scores A+, and not have them actually take the tests. Would the rest of the school year be just like today?
FYI, this did not happen to me... ;)

ReplyDeleteI went to Venice last year with my family. Venice is a super exciting city with a lot of different shops and people. Fortunately, a lot of the tourist shops had these amazing hand painted masquerade masks. I really wanted to bring one home with me but I wanted to make sure I got the right one. There were so many varieties, which made it very difficult to decide. There were red, blue, gold, and silver masks. There were masks with lace, cloth, jewels or sparkles. Our last day there I walked into a shop and spotted the best mask I had seen yet. It was white with a gold jewels and sparkles on it. Around the sides of it were pieces of sheet music with lace on them, folded to make beautiful designs. I knew I had finally found my mask. Now every time I see it hanging on my bedroom wall I remember two things. First, my love for music and how much it influences my life, and second, I remember my amazing trip to Venice and all of the memories that were made.
That sounds beautiful!

ReplyDeleteYesterday was a little bit depressing... Not really, it was actually funny! Anyway, yesterday was compliment day at school, and it was not too fun for me. So here is how it went: In the halls there were papers hanging up saying "Take a compliment!" and attached were some strips of paper that you could tear off saying things like, "You are gorgeous!", "I like your shoes", "Do you work out?", "You should be a model!" and all sorts of stuff like that. I was at the drinking fountain and there was one of these compliment papers hanging up, so I tore one off that said, "I like your hair!", so I turned around and handed it to a girl and told her that I liked her hair! She said thanks and walked away when my friend came up so I pointed to her and said, "Hey look! I just gave that girl a compliment!" and right as my friend looks over, the girl drops the paper in the GARABAGE!!! My heart was a little broken, so I tried again with another person and gave him one that said "You are wonderful" which he dropped and walked away without a thank you. On attempt #3, I gave one to the kid right next to the one who dropped it by tapping his shoulder saying I liked his eyes, to which he gave me the cold-shoulder and walked away. I tried giving my last one that said "I like your shoes" to a girl, but no matter how loud I yelled, she would not acknowledge my existence. I was fed up with this. I took the paper, chucked it at her face and screamed, "I LOVE YOUR SHOES!!!" then walked away.
Funny thing is, she wasn't wearing shoes. :D

Waiting for a special package.
knock, knock, on the door, I roll over to get off the floor, I run to unlock the door to see who I was waiting for.
To my distaste it was my brother who was knocking on the front door and not the mail man I was waiting for.
I reluctantly shut the door behind him after he burst right through me, he didn't say thanks, well that's kind of annoying.
I walk back over and lay back down on the floor to wait patently for a knock to come from the front door.
bink, bing, the door bell rings, I get off the floor and run to the door hoping to find the mail man I am waiting for.
But once again, no, I come face to face with my young woman leader instead of the mail man I was waiting for.
After a she gave me the news on yw camp she left and I went back to waiting on the floor for a knock to come from the front door.
Bang, bang, there's a bang on the door, I jump up and I open the door, but no one is at the door, nothing there except the news paper resting on the steps of the door.
I sigh and close the door, I slide down its surface, and there I fall asleep waiting for the knock to come upon the door, the knock that I've been waiting for.
Knock, knock, came a faint knock.
Yawn, Aha, I wake up and I stretch.
Oh no, how did I get here in my bed.
Knock, knock, knock, came another faint knock.
I started to fill a seance of sadness and dread.
I ran up stairs, horrible thoughts rushing through my head.
Please tell me I haven't missed the mail man, other wise I might drop down dead.
Silence is all I can hear, but I reach the door and swing it wide open to see the mail man walking away.
I yell "Hey get beck here with that box!"
To which he comes running seeming scared of what I might do if he hadn't thought to stop.
He hands me a slip of paper, which I quickly sign.
Then hands me the box, I fill giddy inside.
I throw him the slip and he walks away, I slam the door, finally I wont have to wait any more today.
I run to my room, with eyes full of desire and wonder.
But my mom yells "It's time for bed!" and I think, all well, I guess I'll find out what's in side the box tomorrow.

ReplyDeleteHave any of you ever heard the song "Raindrops keep falling on my head?" It is an awesome song, and is now one of my all-time favorites. I have had it on my Ipod for a while, but everytime it would play on shuffle I would just skip it because I thought, 'Oh, it's just a boring old song that my dad put on my Ipod because he liked it.'
And then one day I listened to it.
And I realized the amazingness of the words in the song! It has such a good moral and really makes me happy. I hope it puts a smile on your face; I would suggest also listening to it as the actual song because it just highlights the beauty of the words. Here it is:
"Raindrops keep falling on my head
Just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed,
Nothing seems to fit.
Those raindrops are falling on my head, they keep falling...
So I just did me some talking to the sun
And I said, I didn't like the way, he got things done.
Sleeping on the job.
Those raindrops are falling on my head, they keep falling...
But there's one thing, I know:
The blues, they send to meet me won't defeat me,
It won't be long till happiness steps up to greet me.
Raindrops keep falling on my head,
But that doesn't mean my eyes will soon be turning red,
Crying's not for me.
And, I'm never gonna stop the rain by complaining,
Because I'm free
Nothing's worrying me!"
I love this song and I hope you enjoy it too. :)

ReplyDeleteI live in utah, right below the mountains. I like living here, I don't think I could live somewhere else. The mountains are so comforting, so big and immovable, so strong and steadfast. They are proof that God lives; who else could make something so permanent and beautiful? If I couldn't live here, I would live by the sea. The sea also testifies of God; It's so... impossible. Impossibly huge, impossibly deep, impossibly mysterious. But then again, anywhere you go has those vast impossibilities that are actually, some how, possibilities. If you go into the middle of nowhere, and look up at the midnight sky, you see the absolutely endless void of space, glittering with stars so immensely far away that you could never dream to reach them. For most people the mountains or oceans or space makes them seem smaller, inconspicuous, but with me, they make me feel like the most important person in the world. Why? Because I know that the person who created all those things, all those miraculous things, is none other than God. And who is God? He is my father.
I love your description, and thoughts at the end. It reminds me of the years i spent living near mountains. Its been a while but i miss them so.

ReplyDeleteIn my Seminary class, brother Tolmen taught us a very important principle. He told us that to get rid of Satan, all we have to do is command him to depart in the name of Jesus Christ. He gave us a few examples of how the prophets long ago used this, and I wanted to try it myself. This morning before school, I was tempted to do something I knew I shouldn't. I felt the influence of Satan, and commanded him to depart in the name of Jesus Christ. Instantly the influence of Satan was gone, and was replaced with a feeling of peace from the Holy Ghost. I know that we cannot get through this life and it's temptations, and get back to Heavenly Father without Jesus Christ.
That's so cool!! It's awesome that you remembered your seminary lesson, and applied it into your life.

Sam: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.
Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?
Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.
I love Sam's last words. If your life seems horrible, like nothing good could ever happen, it's not true. There is always some good in the world and it is worth fighting for. You have to hold fast to the Iron Rod and resist temptations. If you cannot find good anywhere, maybe you are that bit of good in the world. We are children of God and He loves us.
Here is a link to Sam's speech. You'll have to copy and paste it.

That is amazing and so true. I think that there is one thing missing though:
DeleteIf we cannot find anything to hold on to in this world. We may hold onto Christ.
First off - Lord of the Rings is my favorite movie so thank you for sharing! Second i fully agree. Sometimes i feel like people see so much bad and get discouraged too easy. Its a shame to let the good die off we need to fight for it every day. be part of it.
DeleteThose books are so great! J.R.R. Tolkien really knows how to write inspiring stories, doesn't he? (And obviously Peter Jackson knows how to make some pretty great movies out of them).

ReplyDeleteA few days ago it was my dad's birthday and we went to a restaurant called The Counter and it has the best burgers in the world! I had a grilled chicken and pretzel bread burger and it was so good! Then we went on a hike to a waterfall. We went through the muddy oak forest, then we went though a bamboo forest. Eventually we saw the waterfall, it was really tall but not that wide. They put up a sign that says falling rocks! Good thing they put it there because I saw a boulder at the top of the 100 foot waterfall! We went back home and had cake and opened presents and we had a great day on my dad's birthday!
Yes yes yes. I love how God has put such amazing things on this earth for us to enjoy.

ReplyDeleteProcrastination is my weakness. I can procrastinate at anything. And it bothers me a lot. Procrastination is a weakness that is not only bad for college but for every day life as well! I guess this is basically my trial. I would like to stop this and I'm wondering if you all could help me? Tips for breaking current procrastination? Tips for avoiding procrastination completely? You are all smart, so I know you have some great ideas! Thanks :)
Caleb Alton. English Period 3.DE
DeleteThat's a difficult one. I too suffer from the challenge of procrastination. Something I think would help would be to do a little at a time. Make a schedule. If it is something big like a class project, like the Argumentative Paper that is due two weeks after Spring Break, I would do a little at a time. So this week, I would find what I am to write my paper on and think up ideas while I was brushing my teeth or doing any activity; next week I would write a basic outline on the introduction/conclusion and body paragraphs; the week following that one, Spring Break, I would put the form in a more detailed and enlarged form; then the last week until I need to turn it in, I would polish it up. I wouldn't do these all in one day, I would extend it throughout the whole week, or within four-five days. I am afraid I can't help you to break it though since I suffer from it too, but just take a little step at a time and eventually it will pay off.
Step 1? Done. As with anything in life, the first step to breaking a bad habit is recognizing it is there.
DeleteStep 2? Game plan. Sometimes procrastination arises when I feel like I have a to-do list as long as the equator. Usually I can't accomplish every single thing in one day, even if I am being productive. I take a sticky note and write my top few things that I really, really want to accomplish that day. This only works if you are pretty specific. For example, mine from a few days ago looked similar to this:
__ watch english, history, science, and math videos
__ post my slice
__ write thank-you card
__ find out when my next drivers' ed drive is
__ go to orthodontist appointment
__ practice violin
This is a solution that helps for me. That way my to-do list doesn't overwhelm me as much.
Step 3: Initiate. Look at your list and pick the quickest thing you can accomplish. On my list above, I would choose "find out when my next drive is" and text someone to find out. One down, five to go. Do make sure to not do ALL of the easy/quick/fun stuff at the first, otherwise it won't be as fun to do the harder/longer/not-as-fun stuff. Mix it up a little.
Hope this helps! -Paige Anderson 3rd period DE
I know how that feels. I always write a to do list. I kinda helps.

ReplyDeleteIt was the evening of Friday . . . the 3rd, 2005. The first campout I, Joseph, then 5 years of age, had ever been on. Everything seemed to be going well, the sleeping bag was warm, and my arms and legs were warm. It may have seemed to others that I was asleep. But no, I was in the process of nodding (thinking about pizza, gumdrops, and so forth). Before I was able to complete the process, I realized that my nose was itching. I then had to remove my hand from the warm safety of my sleeping bag and proceeded to itch my nose. My attention then drawn from sleep to nose, I realized what I had not realized before, my nose was cold.
HOW DARE THE EVIL FORCES OF THE WIND FROM SKY AND SPACE PENETRATE MY EPIDERMIS?!?!?!?!????
IT SHALL PAY!! ..... maybe later though, I was busy.
My hand, again was cold for a moment. The attention on my nose was then drawn from that to a howl, my mind then explored the wonderland of wolves eating people. Then from wolves, to bears, to spiders, to giant apes, to cute puppies, to ravenous, hungry, poisonous snakes. The sun was now rising and I had received no sleep!
This could be compared to the gospel of Jesus Christ in a relatively joking manner. The Celestial Kingdom (sleep) is what we all want to achieve. The standards, family, the gospel (sleeping bag) is our protection. Temptation (itchy nose, wondering thoughts, ect.) is what we all have to avoid to achieve The Celestial Kingdom.
If we could all just keep our minds clear and ready to receive blessings, we will receive blessings.
Caleb A, English Period 3, DE
DeleteWonderful Comparison. I have always wanted to stay up the entire night and be awake for the sun to rise, but I always get tired or think about how tired I will be the following day. Temptations are the small things like a nose itch that keeps us from happiness, warmth and peace. The only way to get rid of them is to try to forget them or focus your attention on something more focused on God.
The Road Not Taken
ReplyDeleteBY ROBERT FROST
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
I love this poem so much. It reminds me of our agency and how inportant that agency is in gods plan for all of us.
Last night my wards mutual group went to visit the jail. The beginning of the tour was pretty boring since I have been there a few times (all just visits), so it wasn’t until we got to hear from some convicted criminals that it got interesting.
ReplyDeleteBoth speakers had similar stories; in and out of jail, spent time in prison, lost connection with their families, and were both trying to start their lives over… again. Why is it that these addicts keep relapsing? Both of them said it was because of the influence of their “friends.” Their leaving advice to us was to choose your friends wisely, and listen and obey your parents. If we would do this we would become wealthy, form real lasting relationships, and acquire true happiness. Visiting the jail is always an amazing experience.

ReplyDeleteSo, I was at soccer practice today again. Today Sarah was being merciful and we got to play a game. The name of the game is World Cup. This is where we are all in teams of 2 and the goal of the game is to make a goal (hahaha). If your team makes a goal, you sit out. Each team picks a country and when they shoot a goal they call out the name of their country or it doesn't count. Well today, we were playing and by some miracle I got the ball. Losing a friend is almost like losing a loved one. Except, after you've lost that person, you still see them. In the halls, in your classroom, in the cafeteria, and all it does is remind you of the good times that you used to have. They're gone now, all of the memories are to be replaced with fake smiles, and insincere questions about your day. This person, this person doesn't really care. Not anymore, anyways. Not like he/she used to. There is no longer a sparkle in this persons eyes when you greet him/her. Just as the sparkle has left your dead loved one due to its soul leaving its body. You no longer have a friend because you took things too far, and you're never going to get those days that you had with him/her back. So, live in the now.

DeleteToday, one of the other young women asked me to come with her for prom shopping. I went with her to the mall, and we began to pick out dresses in her favorite colors. Finally, as I'm nearly collapsing under the weight of the dresses, Brooke smiles at me and says, "You need to try on some, too!"
ReplyDeleteI looked at her, thinking 'I cannot possibly carry around another fifteen dresses.' Then I see one - it's beautiful. A sort of faded black, it has cream colored polka-dots with the black threading through. The bodice was fitted, but then it flowed out into a bell shape that fell to the floor. I nod to it and tell her that i'll try on that one.
So we get into the dressing rooms and Brooke is flashing through hers. I get into my polka-dotted one, and she helps me zip it up. We both look into the mirror, and it looks good on me. "Emma! I love it; it's sooo pretty." I nod stiffly and she looks at me funny. "Don't you like it?"
"Yes," I squeak. "But - I can't breathe." The top was very very form-fitting, and I literally could fill less than half my lungs with air. Brooke starts to laugh, and hers is quite an infectious laugh. Finally, we're both leaning against the dressing room walls, gasping with laughter. Laughing when one can barely breathe anyways is not a good idea, but i couldn't stop. Brooke keeps giggling about my face, which i'm sure is turning blue by now. I manage to squeak. "Unzip me please." She does, and my lungs literally explode into full expansion. This sends Brooke into more peals of laughter, which of course I can join now. We both keep thinking of the scene from Pirates of the Caribbean ( Elizabeth: "I - can't - breathe - *topples off wall*)
There were many more fun experiences, but this was the most fun - other than the search for Brooke's elusive purse with 100 dollars in it. But that's another story ;D

ReplyDeleteToday when I was thinking about my life so I could write a slice of life I thought of a story of when I was little. I can’t remember exactly how old I was but I was around the age of 9, my parents were gone and my older brother and I were babysitting (mainly I was babysitting). My brother is three years older than me so he would have been around 11, we had these bar stools that had medal bared back rest were there were about three medal bars straight up and one across the top. So we had not been babysitting long and my brother was messing around (like 11 year old boys do) I have no idea what he thinking but for some reason he wanted to see if his head fit in between the bars on the bar stools, well he succeeded his head slipped right in the only problem was that it wouldn't slip back out. No matter what we did we could not get his head out and my parents had forgotten their cell phones. Needless to say he wasn't very happy, me on the other hand I was laughing my head off and I thought it was great, he didn't see how it was funny but couldn't do anything about it which just made him even more angry and I laughed even harder. For the next hour or so he sat on a smaller stool with his head still stuck in the bars and he just waited for my parents to get home and help him get unstuck. Well my parents finally got home and obviously I wasn't the only one who found it funny but he did finally get unstuck and once his head was out he never put it back in.

ReplyDeleteFor all those who desire to read about the time I was in surgery, read the post for tomorrow morning. I hope that it is an exciting and interesting slice of life. I tried to shorten it up, but I tend to write long when it's something I am passionate about. This is also for Mauryn and Red. I wanted to briefly summarize my story. At the beginning of this school year, I had a bad accident occur. I am ok now, I still have little back soreness and occasionally want a back massage from my dad. Overall, I think this was a life changing lesson for me that helped me to overcome physical and spiritual trials. Most importantly, I learned that Heavenly Father does answer our prayers. I prayed multiple times before the surgery that I would be blessed, and be able to serve a mission. I feared that I might become paralyzed after surgery if something had gone wrong, so I asked for father blessings and asked a good friend for a blessing as well. After the blessings, I felt confidence to continue with the surgery and hoped for the best. I was putting 100% of my faith and trust in God that he would protect and heal me, so that I would be able to serve a mission. If something had gone wrong, I knew it was for the benefit as a learning experience and trial of faith. "I do know that whosoever puts their trust in God, shall be supported in their trials, and their troubles, and their afflictions, and be lifted up at the last day." Alma 36: 3
That is a wonderful scripture. I am so thankful for your example of faith!

ReplyDeleteOh the stories this musician has to tell when his feet get tired and he sits down to rest, soft sweet words escape his lips.
With a slow movement of his finger tips like an artists touch to a panting of sound, he plays on his banjo old and round.
“Oh the hills and the prairies I have seen, over mountains and through woodland streams.
What I wish I could say or put into words of the lullaby voice of the wind as it whirls or the way the summer rain washes all your cares away from off your skin and makes you whole again.
I have fallen and I have tripped but the wonders I have never missed with the Lord as a friend I have ever lived again.
From shore to shore I have walked and now my journey is almost at an end for I have come full circle and now stand back at my beginning again.
And oh the sights I have yet to see when I step through the veil and come back to my beginning all over again.”
His sweet words fill the air and soon he is with God in heaven once again.

You may not recognize these names, but your parents probably will. These are the movie stars that I grew up watching. No Barney, no Sesame Stree, no Teleubbies, and no Disney. Yes, I did have a childhood, and no, I'm not being sarcastic. These actors inspired me in my childhood. I remember whenever I saw Gene Kelly tap dance I got goose bumps and felt exhilarated inside. I wanted to grow up and be a tap dancer just like him. Errol Flynn inspired me through adventure. He was a GREAT sword fighter. I was inspired by their singing and humor. I'm so glad my parents brought me up on these amazing actors and actresses. Their movies probably wouldn't be famous today, but I wish more people would make movies like those ones.

ReplyDeleteI really hate it when the sky has turned white. It's not even really white, it's more of a depressing almost-gray-but-not-quite kind of white. The clouds, which I am perfectly fine with if they come in separate numbers, completely cover the sky forming a vast ceiling made of earthly sorrows and the tears of the innocent. It's even worse when it's not snowing or raining, the gray sky's just looming there, threateningly! It's not doing anything, it's just hanging over your head, which just makes paranoid about if it will rain or not and if that coat you brought to school will be of use.
People always say that time flys when your busy or having fun. I can definitely tel you that this is true. I have twin brothers out on the mission field right now ones in Cincinnati Ohio and the other is in Macon Georgia. They're comin home in a couple of months. ReplyDeleteSo I've been trying to think of what to write today, I feel like I need to put something that is of good worth or will help someone in a way but it gets hard finding inspiring things every day. My mom read my family a story tonight that she found about how the way you want things to work it is up to you. Things aren't always going to come easy to us like we would like it to. I think that we need to go out there and keep going and trying to get the things that we want. For example: we could be having a really bad day but what you focus on whether it be the negative or the positive is how you are going to feel at the end of the day. Of course things wont always be that easy and I totally understand that, maybe in that case you can put on a fake smile and tell everyone that its fine. Because we all know we have done that too. So I would suggest to everyone that you not only have to try your hardest to focus on the good but for everyone else to really look for that person that could be struggling. And not walking up to them and asking whats wrong but just sitting by them during a class, telling them a funny story or just including them in a conversation. It's best to think of yourself in their position and think of what you would want from someone else. The Lord works through everyone and we never know if what we are doing, could be answering someones prayers.
Really love what you said, keep up the great work!

ReplyDeleteYesterday at practice I thought it was going to be a really rough day. It actually ended up being nothing as I expected, we did a timed full field sprint and most everyone got a 1:32 or more. It was a rough day, we were hot and tired and just didn't want to be there. Our coach gathered us and told us to lay on the grass, we mediated for 10 minutes. We imagined playing lacrosse to the best of our abilities, and seeing everything on the field. We pictured ourselves being amazing at lacrosse, and perfecting the basic fundamentals. When we were done we were calmed and relaxed, and felt a lot better. We timed our sprint one more time, our coach was silent, then finally she read our time. Every single girl crossed the line at 40 seconds. We all seemed to realize that if were calm we will do better. I personally realized that meditation really does work. It doesn't necessarily just calm you, it strengthens your mind.

Today in seminary i gave the devoutional and its a great scripture to keep in mind. I'ts 3 Nephi 13:34, it say's Take therefore no thought for the morrow, for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. I asked my bother what it meant and he explained it to me that we shouldn't worry about the future and get stressed out about it. Just focus on one day at a time and do the best you can do each day. That is how we can endure to the end.
ReplyDeleteToday our stake patriarch taught in seminary. He taught how getting a patriarchal blessing will strengthen our testimony, and it will help us through trials in life. He also shared cool experiences about giving the blessing to people as young as 12 years of age, up to people that are 84 (he said that is the oldest person that he gave the blessing to). It strengthened my testimony learning about these people that he blessed, and I am excited to get my blessing too!

ReplyDeleteToday I went skiing with my family! It was so fun to be together my family and enjoy something together as a whole. I feel pretty accomplished because I went on a lot of harder runs down the mountain... I can't wait to go again and improve even more! However, I feel very bad for my little sister, who got her ski stuck in the snow and fell down. She said that her foot was still caught in the ski, so she twisted her ankle VERY badly. My dad, who is a doctor, thought that she had cracked multiple areas in her ankle and leg. He got pretty worried! But, luckily, she didn't break anything and was able to ski down the rest of the mountain after she took a breather for a second. That little incident scared us! But, overall, it was such a super fun day! Like I said before, it was a good bonding moment because we could do something as a family together!

ReplyDeleteWednesday! Where do I begin?
We woke up at 7. I did not sleep well and was not happy. However we got up and got ready to leave. That morning we were going to go see a rocket motor test of some sort. It was set to go off at 9:30 am. I got dressed and got ready. Then I had to take care of my dog. She was staying out and needed water. I was not worried for the cat. He could take of himself. I went looking for the outside water dish. It was in the garage. It had murky brown water in it. I groaned and picked it up. It was not just water though. The cat had left a surprise in it. It had to be the cat. I went and cleaned it. While my family hurried me along. They yelled for me to hurry, already in the car. My little brother was helping me but I cold tell he was impatient. If we were late, they would never forgive me. I finally finished and carried it outside. Now filled with clean water. Then I hurriedly washed my hands and ran out to the car. We got lost and finally made it to the road. It was busy so we knew we were in the right place. Where do we look? We looked for a rocket and saw nothing. Then we heard it. BOOM. Then a black cloud of smoke. We had missed it. We weren't even close. Us and a thousand other people. We turned and headed for home. I heard my little brother blaming me and felt bad. Not a good day and I was not in a good mood.

ReplyDeleteMy mom just got surgery in her mouth. So we were all staying home from church that day. My two older sisters, my mom and I decided that we would play a game of clue. It was my first time ever playing it. We got the game out and they explained to me how to play,;we were all set. We started to play the game, I was marking my little card, with what I had, and with what my sibling were saying that they had. It was about our third time around the circle, and I had figured who the killer was. I told them that I knew who it was. They sat their and argued with me for at least ten minutes, then they finally decided that they would check. It turned out that I was correct and I had kicked my sisters and moms butts in it for the first time playing it when I was about five years old.

ReplyDeleteColoring is the best. When i was a kid, (even now) i loved to color. I would always get princess and fairy coloring books. Oh, and horse ones too. I still have so many books that i never finished. When we have grand-kids, hopefully they will want to use them. i still love to color and draw, it makes me happy!

In our life's we have challenges. Today I had a challenge. I woke up from my wonderful sleep and for some reason I thought I had more time to sleep. Well I ended up sleeping until 8:45 witch for thous of you who don't know that is 15 minutes after school starts. I think that was the fastest I have ever got before. The moral of the story is don't sleep in.

ReplyDeleteWhat have I done to make someone proud.
I got out of bed,
I went to school,
I went to math class,
I went to history,
I went to English,
And I'm probably going to science,
Then I'll go home,
Then I'll do it all over again.

ReplyDeleteYesterday at ten thirty I remembered that my slice of life wasn't in. I hurry and get onto the computer. It feels like it took 5 years to get to the blog, I copy, paste my slice of life. But then It starts glitching like crazy, it pasting like crazy! I try to make it stop but it doesn't stop at all. So then I decide to just close the window. I close and then reopen it, and all of the pasted stuff is still there. I try my best to delete all of it, but it doesn't work. Then from the next room my mom calls my name. I respond by saying, "I'm trying to put my slice of life in." She has no idea what that is but says to go to sleep. I get a little mad and then go to bed.
Today we had ballroom nationals and I got 7th for jr Latin ballroom for the finals. Wahoo so excited to see what we get in standard. Wish me luck!
ReplyDeleteToday I decided to try out the DE life, I cant even begin to tell you how nice it is not having to get up at 6 every morning, today I woke up at 8:30, I didn't even bother getting dressed, I walked up the stairs turned on telenect, and science began, I walked over to the kitchen and started cooking some eggs, I popped some bread in the toaster and when the toast was done put the eggs on top and returned to the computer, Brother Lloyd was talking about something science related and I was sitting on the couch in my pjs, eating breakfast and curled up in a blanket. It was rather nice, I began to fall asleep... shhh dont tell. I feel asleep and then I heard somebody scream and I nearly threw the laptop off of my lap.... yep I totally forgot I have 7 other siblings. Oh goodness how I could feel this DE day was probably going to be a bad idea after all. wish me luck.

ReplyDeleteMe and my brother have the weirdest conversations ever. One day, we decided to stop talking to each other, and come up with creative ways to communicate with each other. So my brother picked up a piece of paper, and started talking to me by writing stuff down. I don't know sign language, but I tried to do a form of sign language. We did that for about 5 minutes, and we couldn't do it anymore, because we were laughing so hard.
I know right me and Caleigh have crazy conversations all the time!

Monopoly is a game that shows a different side of people. When I play with my family everyone suddenly becomes ruthless, power hungry, and they creat deals that seem as though they have been spawned by the devil. This is what happens when you grow competitive. It is completely different from my first game of monopoly. That very first game I remember being in tears when my brother was going bankrupt. I tried to help him, but that just caused me to go into bankruptcy which triggered me to cry harder. Although I did feel good that I was able to prolong my brothers inevitable doom. But now that we are older and we know that it is just a game, we find joy in crushing our family members and watching them crash and burn. Like I said Monopoly brings out a different side of people.
My dog loves water so much, She is so weird because my other dog hates it. She can't leave it alone when I turn the tap on. It's like it eats at her until she has to attack it. Even though I can tell that she is so sick of drinking the water. It worries me that she will drink way to much and so I have to turn it off. My other dog is terrified of water. Whenever he thinks he is going to get wet he runs and hides. All we have to do is pull out a squirt bottle to discipline him and he freaks out. maybe my dog who likes water will eventually teach my dog who hates it, to love it.

ReplyDeleteMy sister is leaving soon on her mission. We were the only siblings left at home for 2 years while my brother was on his mission, and during those 2 years we became best friends. Now my brother has come home and she is leaving. I am a little scared for her to leave, but I know she will be serving the Lord and now I will have the chance to become better friends with my brother. Lots of changes, but change is one of the ways I learn and grow the most.

When I was about five or six years old I brought my little sister with my to my friend’s house; they lived just across the street. They had a pile of haystacks covered with one of those big blue tarps. And the inside of the tarp was freaking awesome it was all blue and it felt like we were away from the world, it turned into sort of a clubhouse. So we lay there on our backs with our legs in a ninety-degree angle to keep the tarp up. And then we started kicking because it looked cool all the flashing colors and the sound it was just awesome. After a little while, I felt like we should stop, so I did. But my friend and little sister kept doing it so I started again. I got that feeling again, but I just kept going; and then, “THUD.” Some sort of metal pole came crashing down on all three of our heads. We all began to sob because of the agonizing pain. We all quickly scrambled out from beneath the tarp. My sister and I found our way home with tear stained cheeks. I felt so bad that my sister had gotten hurt and for some reason I thought my mom would be mad if she found out so I made an effort not to let her know what happened. But later that day she was brushing my sisters hair and noticed a huge goose egg on top of her head and asked me what happened. I immediately broke down in tears thinking that I was going to be in loads of trouble as I explained the story to her. Looking back now I have no idea why I thought she would be mad at me.

ReplyDeleteI've certainly gotten lost a lot. But I think the most memorable was when I got lost in Yellowstone when I was about six years old. Now it seems like a pretty terrifying situation, but at the time I found it pretty exciting. I had gone to the restroom and had slipped out without my father noticing, I wandered down several trails for some reason, and I found myself a nice place to rest. I actually took a nap on this bench, and then I was abruptly awoken by my brother, I was pretty angry that he had found me, but I'm pretty sure my dad had gotten scolded, and he seemed much angrier than me. I was somewhat grounded, (on a vacation). I was forced to constantly stay by my parents side, which pretty much ruined the rest of the trip for me. Sadly, I'm somewhat proud of the fact that I had gotten myself lost, then was angry that I had been found.
Seminary is a fantastic thing!! I attend early morning seminary at Orem high and I love it so much!!!! Even though it can be painful to wake up at 5:45 to be ready in time for class at 6:30 I still love being able to go every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

ReplyDeleteWednesday. My sister and I went to a youth conference that was being held on a sea base. This was very exciting to me because I love the ocean. There was only a few problems. First off we were not allowed onto any of the sail boats. This bothered me because I love sailing and I am very good at it. Secondly we weren't allowed on the docks! Thirdly we weren't allowed in the water at all! You cant put someone like me next to the ocean and put these kind of rules on me! In my mind it was a from of child abuse. Its like putting a newly recovered alcoholic and making him spend the weekend in a bar, expecting him not to drink anything. I began descending into madness, rocking back and forth on shore as I stared out into the water.
Many years ago I and my scout patrol went on a trip to a group of islands in a large lake. After kayaking several hours we finally arrived at our destination. After camp was set up, we went swimming in the beautiful dark blue rough waters. Laying our towels on the tent platform to dry we went about the rest of our evening. The next morning I got up early. Upon moving the towels to make breakfast, I discovered what I would have least expected; A scorpion that had been lying under the towel, just motionlessly siting there. I was in utter shock squinting and rubbing my eyes over and over in disbelief and telling myself that it wasn’t real. I eventually poked it with a stick to find it flinch and strike it. I was so surprised because we were on the east coast where these creatures "don’t live." The added effect that we were on an island didn’t help either. My friends were now up and staring at it with me. They started frantically thinking of a way to kill it, while I came back holding a big rubber mallet for our tent stakes. I then proceeded to lay waste to the creature with many over powered blows. After the cloud of dust dispersed, we saw what used to be the scorpion. We then took note of the long line of towels and instantly had the same idea, Scorpion Wack-a-Mole. For the rest of the week we took turns slaying our foe competing in our speed and accuracy.

ReplyDeleteI have one nephew and two nieces. They are all so fun! I love them all to death! My nephew's name is Zealand and he is nine months old. He is already walking! He is into everything. He definitely will keep you on your toes when tending him. My two nieces names are Maddison and Felicity. Maddison is five years old and has a bigger vocabulary than I do! She says the biggest words! Felicity just turned one and she enjoys watching the horses and chickens. She is the sweetest little red-head ever! I love being an aunt!

My breakfast most days
is three eggs, toast, and fruit. But
sometimes I want more.
To feed the black hole
that is my stomach is an
impossible task
I eat and eat but
never am filled. Oft I ask,
"Am I a Hobbit?"
"Picture of a mountain"
ReplyDeleteThose mountains are really magnificent. Us Utahns tend to take them for granted. People from all over the world come here just to see these mountains; when we see them all the time. The beauty never died, but our interest wavers. I love the mountains so much and when i tell people to look at them, they tend to shrug it off like they're no big deal. I suppose we don't know we love something until it's gone or taken from us.

ReplyDeleteSchool. School is an interesting thing. It's an incredibly volatile thing. The fact is, if you get behind a day, you can count on being behind a week in this thing. Ugh. This thing.
Today my mom and I have to get ready for young woman's. Tomorrow we are going to play the game "Chopped" with all of the young woman, it's going to be fun. We are going to have baskets just like the T.V show. I want to put a time limit on the game so it makes it more challenging. A few weeks ago we played cupcake wars and that was so much fun too! I love being in young woman's because it a good experience and I'm so glad the church has these programs.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a lot of fun! Too bad my scout troop probably doesn't have enough people interested in cooking to do this. (Not to mention we can't even use the equipment in our church's kitchen, but's that's another story).
