Slice of Life: DAY 2

Remember that you are writing a snippet of your life, a slice, not giving us the whole pie, so write well but write with brevity.

After you post your slice, strive to comment on at least three other slices.

How to get entries into the raffle at the end of the challenge:
  1. Post your slice here BY 9 PM (MDT). For each time you post, you get an entry.
  2. Comment on other slices at anytime throughout the challenge. For every five thoughtful comments that you make, you get an entry.
  3. Slice every day for the entire month (31 days), and you will get an entry into a special drawing.

  1. This is a poem that I wrote in 4th grade, and though it is a little elementary, I still treasure it to this day because I was so proud of it at the time. :) The only thing I would change about it are the last two lines in the last stanza, because they don't fit at all. :P Here it is:

    "Orca"

    "Swiftly moving through the ocean
    Orca whales swim in motion
Through the waves they do glimmer
Fast and strong, what a swimmer!

    A stomach full of fish
    Would be their dream's wish
    Orcas have so much power
    Marine animals surely cower

    Distinctive patches of white
That they show with all their might
    You probably wouldn't be thrilled
To see that one has been killed"

  2. I remember one mothers day when our dads, uncles, and grandpa cooked everything so the mothers could have a "relaxing" day. the moms weren't even "allowed" to serve. I remember our aunt walked in and told us not to complain about the food even if it wasn't very good so the dads wouldn't feel bad. The food wasn't that good compared to our normal dinners with the moms cooking it. but I remember that for dessert there was like five things prepared, one for each moms favorite dish, and some for allergys and stuff like that. but like I said before, the moms weren't allowed to serve or anything. they weren't even allowed in the kitchen because the dads wanted them to be served like they were in a fancy restraunt. so the dads we unsupervised and they let us pick anything we wanted and as much as we wanted! all of the cousins and I were super excited! and we got almost everything! afterwards we were super sugar high and went semi-crazy. and that night we all felt sick and the moms got really upset with the dads and no matter how much our cousins and I begged the moms never allowed the dads to dish up the dessert without "adult" supervision.

  4. My heart is a notice-board; memorandum pinned all about.
The fingers of my mind drift over the notices.

One holds love from family, and comfort from friends.
It’s pinned at the top, thus frequently looked over.
Below, a reminder to do this-and-this, as well as that.
Tucked into the side is a few favorite scriptures, illuminated.
    One bright message is full of brighter memories with friends;
it reminds me to laugh, and thank God for His goodness.
One mournful picture was painted by sad music and sadder thoughts.
A jagged, crumpled piece of paper is filled with ugly words, blurred by tears.

My heart is a notice-board; my life is pinned all about.
The fingers of my mind drift over the contents.

A hand-out shows a list of favorite books, and poems, and movies.
One thick scroll holds an inventory of characters and scenes imagined.
A whimsical ribbon of humor flutters across this portion of my heart.
The notes, black and white, tears and laughs, are of a great diversity.
Some make me think; some make me laugh.
Others bring the tears, or the burning in my soul,
    Another spreads soft, drifting peace.
Some are hidden deep, some are shared with few or many.

My heart is a notice-board; myself pinned all about.
The fingers of my mind drift over the past,
They record the present, and reach for the future.

Especially while playing against boys, because I want to show them I can play just as good as they can. During the game I got in one of the guys face while he was trying to shoot. He than threw the ball high into the air, when he did he ended up accidentally knocking me flat on my back. My friend started screaming "foul! foul!" I started laughing on the ground while trying to explain to her it did not really matter. Because I should of been given 10 fouls during that game. But that no one ever called me out on those fouls. By the time it was over I had a couple bruises and a smile on my face. It had completely turned my day right side up.

  10. "Pad Lock."
Every person has his or her own love "pad lock."
As you get to know a person more, you eventually learn his or her pass code into his or her "pad lock."
Upon unlocking this "pad lock" you enter a completely different level with the person who's trust you've earned, and who's "pad lock" you have decoded.
Each person and pass code is different. As you get to know a person you begin to figure out how he or she works. Or in other words, you figure out his or her (love language) pass code. When you discover or learn his or her love language you become closer friends because you understand how best to show affection for each other. Or in other words, you have unlocked your friends "pad lock."

My heart contains many secrets, just like anyone else. I imagine my heart to be covered with locks. Each lock has a poem, picture or short story on it. If you looked at any of them, they might not make any sense. The explanations and descriptions for the things on the locks are locked inside my heart, and I'll only unlock it if I trust you. Good luck trying to break in otherwise.

  19. BYU campus and geocaching? I'm up for it! It's a beautifully, bright and sunny summer day. Earlier, our families had eaten lunch under the shade of the giant tress that dot the small park on the side of BYU campus. But now, it is time for an adventure. Sarah pulls out her iPhone and opens up the geocaching app. She puts in our coordinates and waits for the nearest geocache results to show up. We choose which one we want to do first and set off. We follow the directions and end up in a parking lot across the street. We keep walking with our eyes peeled for anything unusual or out of place. Finally, we end up at a lamp post. Confusion sets in. But then someone wiggles the plastic base. We watch with hopeful, baited breath. He lifts it and we see it! A small, white plastic bottle nestled underneath. We pulled it out, opened the lid, and pulled out the contents. There was a small coin and some small pieces of paper where we could write our names in proof that we had found this treasure. We wrote "Park Day Group" on the paper, slipped i and the coin back into the bottle, and put the bottle back under the plastic base of the lamp post. Then, we set off to find another treasure, and a new adventure.

BYU Men's Basketball's Utter Domination of #3 Gonzaga.

First: The defensive improvement was monumental. Corbin Kaufusi has finally learned how to stay on his feet when playing post defense. Also, BYU has been able to limit their last SIX opponents to 70 points or less; a statistic that is too serious to be ignored any further.

Second: Kyle Collinsworth was able to perform miraculously well under pressure, putting up 20 points and pulling down 8 rebounds. His 5 regular season triple double games were nothing short of incredible but the Gonzaga game ranks up near the top when it comes to career highlight performances.

Third: Brigham Young University was able to snap the longest running home court win streak in college basketball. When playing at the kennel, the Bulldogs of Gonzaga were able to string together 41 victories. Based on statistics, the cougars should have lost. But hard work doesn't care what statistics think and BYU won anyway.

It was a quite gloomy day, and my mood always seems to sway with the weather. Right off the bat you should be able to get the hint that it was not a very enjoyable day.
When I woke up, it was freezing cold, I did not want to get out of bed, when I finally pulled myself out of bed. As I shuffled upstairs to do my daily routine I pulled out two eggs, a pan and turned on the stove. I cracked the two eggs into the pan and waited patiently for them to cook. Did I mention I was making sunside eggs? well I think the eggs could tell today was quite gloomy as well because what I ended up with, were not sunnyside at all. I ended up with more of a squished over cooked sad egg. I took a little bite and did not like them so I gave them to my dog instead. It turns out dogs dont like eggs! and thus the long, overdue, dreary day begun.

So many people are so depressed, and I'm just over here like, "My life is awesome!" Of course, nobody's life is perfect, but its really just about how you choose to look at it. Some people seem to look everywhere for happiness, but they will never find true happiness until they learn the difference between happiness and pleasure. Pleasure comes from materialistic things, such as a video game or something else like that, that won't last. While happiness is a state of being, it comes from switching your mindset to look for the good in life, rather than the bad. You will never find happiness in a TV show, but you can find happiness while serving others. Making others happy will make you happy too, there are so many examples of this, all you have to do is look. Serve, look for the good in others and in yourself, and look for the good in everything.

  36. Why do people lock away secret notes? Have they no intention to excess the happiness in their lives? What has the world become when there is no love? We need not hide the secrets of this world when all are unitfied and trustworthy. Can the lonly go and find happiness through service, or can the suffering heal those who's heart is failing? Why then lock away secrets into a chamber if they have thrown the key away never to look at them again? Tell me a person who is honest and does not throw away their life by making poor decisions. Tell me a person who faithfully seeks out ways to serve the poor and needy. Tell me a person who speaks of kindness and trully treats others with kindness as a gift. Who acts in a way that no one can contridict and loves all without having to be asked to love others. Tell me when you have found a person who does all those and I will tell you that they are trully joyful because of the good works they have done. Then will I tell you the world would have peace and need not hide things in a "lock", because if everyone was like that, no one would need of secrecey.

When I and all of my siblings for that matter, were younger we took piano lessons. Now we didn’t particularly like these lessons. We would always dread the one-day a week the teacher would come over. We would all sit glued to the TV until that sound, that evil sound of the doorbell would ring at 3:30 every Wednesday with our piano teacher right behind it waiting to be let in. As soon as we heard that sound we would all spring to our feet and hide. This was because whoever answered the door always had to have lessons first, and nobody wanted that.

“You go get it! I got it last time!” One brother would cry, as the other would claim, “Yeah, but I made you nachos so you owe me!” We would all be throwing reasons out as to why we shouldn’t have to answer the door. The time would always tick away since no one would give in. It would go from two minutes to five minutes to seven minutes until eventually everyone would gang up on one person so he had to go answer the door and be first to have lessons. That person, somehow, always ended up being me, probably because I’m the youngest. This just goes to show the youngest sibling always gets the bad end of the deal, well after the piano teacher.

I thought it was impossible. The road to the Eagle Scout Rank was endless. Everyone was telling me just to get it done, but it seemed so far away. I had to get my Eagle fast because a bunch of other boys were going to be in an Eagle Court of Honor and I wanted to be in it as well! I told myself it was going to be over soon and I got to work.

After days of finishing merit badges and Eagle paper work, I found myself a week away from the Eagle Board of Review. I made sure that I knew the Scout Oath, Scout Law, Scout Motto, and the Scout Slogan. When the big day came, I knew I was ready.

You can imagine my surprise, relief, and happiness when I walked out of the church building knowing that I, after tons of perseverance and hard work, had finally gotten my Eagle!

When I visualize a pad lock I think of what is known as the “Love Lock Bridge” in Paris. “Love Lock Bridge” is a place were lovers go and put locks on the fence (on the bridge) as a symbolism of their love. Lock has many definitions a few are; fasten or secure, make or become rigidly fixed or immovable. After looking up the definition I could grasp why the lovers wanted to symbolically lock their love on a bridge. In other words they fasten and secure their love and want it to become immovable.

She called her "Granny Hobble Gobble", and the only difference between my grandma, and Granny Hobble Gobble, is that my grandma would put on her glasses and talk in a raspy voice. I was like 5 or 6 at the time, so I thought that my grandma had a REAL twin sister. Whenever I asked questions about Granny Hobble Gobble, like where she lived during the day, my grandma would just respond stuff like: she simply lives in a closet. As a child I thought that it was the coolest thing ever. It still remains to be a happy memory.

Getting asked on my first date
I watch the game with intensity. There was no way I was going to let Mikaela win again. The tension in the air has built to what I thought was impossible for a game of cards. Just then, my phone buzzes.
“Are you going to get that?” Mikaela ask. She’s clearly trying to distract me. I can text back after I win. Then it buzzes again. Two buzzes can only mean one thing- a phone call. Who would be calling me?
I give in, and pull my phone out of my pocket. The screen glares back at me with a number I don’t recognize.
    “Who is it?” Mikaela asks.
“I have no idea.” I respond. I slide to answer, and hold the phone to my ear.
    “Hello?” I say warily.
    “Hi. Is this Emily?”
    “Yes.”
    “This is Chris.”
    “Hey Chris.”
“So… I was wondering if you were doing anything this Friday?” He asks nervously. Excitement washes over me. I’ve only been sixteen for a month. Could this be my first date?
    “No I’m not.”
“Would you like to hang out? Kind of like a group date…” He trails off.
    “Yeah, that sounds fun!”
“Awesome. I’ll text you the details when I figure everything out.” He says.
    “Sounds good. Bye.”
    “Bye.”
I grin in excitement. My first date!

This is one of my favorite scripture mastery's this year. I really like this scripture because it's telling us that if we pray always then we can avoid and escape temptation. If we are pray then we can have the spirit with us. If we have the spirit with us then it is easier for us to avoid the temptations Satan throws at us and we can make better choices. Whenever you are put in a situation and your not sure what to do . . . PRAY! You will be filled with the spirit and you will be able to make the best decision. Keep up the great work everyone! :)

His response was very odd. It was, "I just called to tell you I left chocolate milk on your porch." (we had a conversation the other week about how much we like chocolate milk) Puzzled, I looked on my porch. No milk. I checked the fridge. No milk. I asked my parents if they had gotten it. They hadn't. I asked him if he was sure he had left it at the right house. He described the house he had dropped off the milk at and it fit the description of my neighbors house. I asked my neighbor if she had found it. She hadn't found anything on her porch. Where, oh where is my chocolate milk???

Outside of the Science portion though I felt pretty confident overall about the test. English was by far the easiest for me and, as a result, my highest score was in that section. The Reading and Math were only difficult because I ran out of time for both; I need to work on answering the questions more efficiently.

  60. I am doing a duo scene from the Curious Savage with one of my good friends and there is a line in our scene that says, "Make peace with loneliness."
There comes a time in everyone's life when they have to decide whether or not they will make peace with being lonely because there comes a time in everyone's life when they're alone. The key to making peace with loneliness is remembering that no matter how alone you feel you're never truly alone because Jesus Christ will always be there for you no matter how lost or broken you are. I know this to be true. I know that Christ heals wounds both open and concealed.

I jump out of my bed and run up the stairs, it's early in the morning and grandpa is here, but my feet are to slow and grandpa yells, "It's time to go!" I rush around while my brother stalls, he doesn't want to go to school and argues, but I stay quiet then I feed the dogs. We get in the car, now that I've gotten the morning work done and I look out the window and watch the rain fall that was the morning without the sun.

  66. On some days, well most days I am sluggish. But on one particular occasion, I was much more so than my norm. I was with friends and we were somewhere, I can’t really remember. It could have been a camp out, or a car trip. I was trying to get the attention of one of my dearest friends. I interrupted the conversation that was going on at the time, the one I was paying no attention to. I said "Bro" which is normal for me. But afterward I immediately said "dude" which is also normal; Then "man" and then "sir"(which is not normal for me).

    I basically said "Bro-Dude-Man-Sir".

Their conversation just stopped, and they looked at me with that face, you know. If the face could speak, it would probably say like "What on earth did u just say?!?" or "What is wrong with you!"

But ever since, the friend I was addressing at the time, picked it up as his nickname for 7 years and counting. My friends quote it all the time, almost hailing the phrase.

Three things I’ve learned since then are:
One, no matter how dumb you think you made yourself look, if you don’t let it affect you, people will see that.
Two, real friends wont judge you the way the savior wouldn’t.
And three, in the long run it doesn’t matter, we all make mistakes.
And who knows u might end up with a cool story like mine.

For example, I was on the Santa Clara University touring the mission on the campus, and I saw a sculpture that didn't make much sense; it looked like a cross between a satellite and a chair. It probably represents something, but I haven't a clue as to what that is. Another sculpture I saw was one of all these tetris-like blocks attached to each other at odd angles. "This," I thought, "Is insipid. A child could have come up with that design and built it out of legos." If you understand modern-art, kudos to you because I am clueless.

We often close ourselves off from others. We keep our feelings out of sight. Maybe we don't want to become a burden or a source of heartache. We think that people don't see these feelings that we keep locked away. But I see them, and the only burden I feel is the inability to help. I care for others with ease that is one of my good qualities. But it causes me so much pain. I see you struggling, I see you keeping things locked up, I see you putting on a fake smile, and I hear you say nothing is wrong. But I see past what you present, and I know it is a lie. Remember you are loved despite what you believe, and someone's heart is aching to see you in such need.

  80. Most people reminisce on the good 'ol days when they where the baby of the family, the youngest, adored by many and spoild rotten by parents. I was only able to enjoy this luxury for two minuts, after that I had a baby/twin sister. That's right, twins, I am one half of a set of twins; a boy-girl set of twins to be exact. You would think that we would be treated equally but no, I was immediately chosen to fill the mold of the big brother before you could think twice. Even now at fourteen she still calls me her big brother (especially when she needs a favor). But it is also a blessing, I've cashed in those stolen years as the youngest and used them to lord my two minutes of seniority over my sister. Who is obviously much more inexperienced. In the two minutes before she was born I saw things she could never imagine and it's my responsibility to teacher the many life lessons I learned the hard way in those two minutes. It's a hard knock life for me.

Books, books everywhere, yet not a word is read. There are countless books in the world that we live in. Some are ancient and some are modern. Yet, only a small percentage of the population of the world engrosses themselves into picking on up and reading it for sheer pleasure and not for an assignment. There is knowledge and wisdom contained in some books. Others are filled with action, romance. Some are created to sway the public mind into adopting a term. Others are written to point out the flaws in this world. However, only one book, two in reality, we should make sure that we read. That is the Book of Mormon. The word of God is listed in its pages. It was sent to earth at this time because it is of great worth to us. We need to read it so that we can be prepared to fight the adversary with his ancient methods and proclaim this gospel as truth.

Have you ever woken up and thought "That was a great dream!" or "That was the weirdest dream!" ext. and didn't actually remember what it was about? That happens almost every time for me. I know that I have had so many great dreams that when I woke up my day was already the best, and yet, I have no idea what any of them were about. It kind of bothers you actually. But when you do remember them I personally wish every time that I had a way of recording it or something so I can look back at it and remember it. Wouldn't that be nice..

I hate mondays. It means the beginning of a long hard week. This morning I had the displeasure of waking up to my alarm for seminary. This normally would not be a big deal, but due to my lack of sleep that night, I was not thinking strait. I opened my eyes to this repetitive and annoying beeping sound. I was at such a dysfunctional level that I had no idea what the sound was and why it was there. I tried ignoring it, but I could not, so I laid there trying to figure out what the noise was. I thought perhaps there was a late night party going on that involved some strange beeping. After wrestling with this idea for a while I decided it wasn't likely. Maybe it was some strange cicada? After a few minutes it hit me, It was my alarm! I sat up to turn it off, but I could not remember how! Trying figure out what to do with it felt like a complex puzzle. What did it want? I smacked all the buttons in hopes it might accomplish something. It stopped. Triumphantly I fell back onto my bed to fall asleep. What felt like moments later, I was woken to that infernal beeping! Outraged and mentally incapable of turning it off I stuffed my alarm in my pillow and threw it across my room. Although it was still beeping, It was muffled and a good distance away. Crawling back into bed, I just recalled why I had an alarm in the first place. I needed to get up for seminary.

Yesterday I went mudding on my four wheeler. There were giant puddles of mud and the water was very deep. I would get going about 40 miles an hour then hit the mud/water mix and hydroplane over the whole puddle. It was a great day!

  86. It is very easy to put your dreams on hold. But if you do that it'll get easier and easier to keep saying, "It can wait." But if you go after your dreams you can accomplish so much. I'm not saying everything will be perfect, but it will work out. And we need to decide now instead of waiting to the last minute and not accomplishing your goals.

  88. In March last year we were in Disneyland with Liahona Drama. The drama club was leaving Wednesday morning and we left Monday. We went to the beach and we stayed with the Bowmans. The next day we woke up and went to California Adventure park in Disneyland. It was great. When we were in line for the new cars ride it broke down and we were waiting in line for 2 hours. I was way worth it, no matter how long the line is, I will always go on that ride. The next day we went to Disneyland with the Drama club. We had a lot of fun there and the Space Mountain ride was more fun than I remember. Friday and Saturday, we went to the competition and we drove home on Sunday.

I go to the temple weekly
    always so, so meekly
    I always feel the spirit
    And I always feel merit
    about who I am inside
The temple doors, which are wide
To accept anyone who is worthy
Instead of anyone who is unworthy

I think that it's so interesting how Satan tries to tempt us so much before we do something righteous and spiritual. It's like he knows what we are going to do and he does everything he can to try to stop us from doing it.

For example, my mom and my sisters were going to go and walk around temple square, but right before we arrived at temple square, we got into a big fight and none of us felt a good spirit. But then we repented, apologized to each other, then went and had such an AMAZING spiritual experience walking around temple square.

Another example happened a couple months ago. My mom was supposed to give a Powerpoint Presentation/talk at a Stake Youth Fireside. In the weeks of preparing for it, she said that the Adversary got into her heart and just pounded her with feelings of inadequacy and negativity about herself. She began to really not want to give her talk because she felt like she wasn't good enough. But then she gave her presentation/talk. The spirit was so strong in the room, I felt like I could touch it! She did such a great job.

From these examples, it just goes to show that Satan really is doing all he can to destroy the kingdom of God. But, he's failing miserably. In these examples, it has always resulted in having a wonderful and spiritual experience once we've passed the temptation phase. So we must do all that we can so that we can defeat Satan and his temptations.

I can not agree with this more! He only has power over us when we give it to him. Thank you, for sharing these experiences! They really helped make your point, and they prove that it is always worth the fight against temptations.

  91. "First Joke"
One of the first jokes I ever told to my parents was, "where do sheep go to get their haircuts? To the BAA BAA Shop". My mother told me I would wake her up in the middle of the night to tell her that joke. Apparently I would tell that joke out of no where while I was playing. I would be playing and stop dead in my tracks and being to tell her the joke again. I would tell jokes over and over for weeks when I learned a new one. I used that one for a few months before I got tired of it.

Bike Riding is a joyous simplicity: The wind racing through my hair, the sweet sound of spring right o round the corner. I am quite sure my bike enjoys riding as well. He glides gracefully on the street, as I turn around in a circle like manner. In reality that is were I would like to be as of now, on my bike riding, just riding, rather than sitting at my desk doing homework. Ah well, more splendid the journey with a few hard cliffs to climb to reach the summit of success.

I'm going to Georgia this week and I'm pretty stoked. My brother whom I haven't seen for quite some time lives out there. We used to get in fights all the time! However, since he's gotten older, he's become a pretty cool guy. Can't wait to see my homie!

  96. Today I am cleaning cars for my parents. We own a small (Family) dealer ship and I always detail/wash cars for them to make some money. I love doing it for them and it helps them out too! Just a couple hours ago I detailed a jeep, it took me about 2 hours to wash, scrub the carpet, wipe down all the seats and dashes. It looks really nice, and I enjoy doing it.

  98. Rainy days can be the best days. Rain gives the perfect opportunity to settle down with a nice long novel and a cup of hot chocolate. The soothing words on the pages as well a the soft sound of rainfall calm your nerves and allow you time to think. When you read next to a window you spend almost as much time watching the storm as you do reading. Occasionally the majestic boom of thunder or blinding flash of lightning startles you from your story. As the last rumbles die away a beautiful rainbow begins to appear. You can consider this an afternoon well spent.

I completely agree! It is truly beautiful. As I watch storms, I am always in awe with how incredible it really is. Very well said, and I am glad I am not the only one to feel this way.

I have one nephew and two nieces. They are all so fun! I love them all to death! My nephew's name is Zealand and he is nine months old. He is already walking! He is into everything. He definitely will keep you on your toes when tending him. My two nieces names are Maddison and Felicity. Maddison is five years old and has a bigger vocabulary than I do! She says the biggest words! Felicity just turned one and she enjoys watching the horses and chickens. She is the sweetest little red-head ever! I love being an aunt!

Yesterday at track practice we had a hard workout. We ran 16 400's (4 miles); eight of them were at race pace, and eight were recovery. So we would run a lap really fast, then jog a lap. When we were running the fast laps, I was running 70 second laps, which is about a 4:40 mile pace, and it was pretty hard. 4 out of the 8 hard laps I ended up running 67 seconds instead of 70; I was so tired I went home and went straight to bed.
