Slice of Life: DAY 23

Remember that you are writing a snippet of your life, a slice, not giving us the whole pie, so write well but write with brevity.

After you post your slice, strive to comment on at least three other slices.

How to get entries into the raffle at the end of the challenge:
  1. Post your slice here BY 9 PM (MDT). For each time you post, you get an entry.
  2. Comment on other slices at anytime throughout the challenge. For every five thoughtful comments that you make, you get an entry.
  3. Slice every day for the entire month (31 days), and you will get an entry into a special drawing.

    I'm not sure why, but I kinda thought I wouldn't be the first slice, but no, here I am, 1:30 in the morning, and I'm bored out of my mind. I haven't done anything today (well, yesterday), I was sick so I didn't go to church, and I don't think I can handle another episode of Supernatural. It's just kinda been one of those nights when I'm super tired, but I have passed the point of regular tiredness where I just want to sleep, and I'm now at the stage where im way to hyper to go to sleep. I'm really hyper right now, and I think I'm gonna see if my brother will take me to del taco, we've done that a few times. I've done some pretty weird things in the middle of the night, especially baking, I think I've made more cookies at 2 AM than at any other time of day. I made pancakes a few nights ago, I've also made pancakes and crepes, and a lot of cookies.

    I really jumped from one thing to another quickly, sorry about that. You're all wonderful people and I hope you have great day!

    1. Jumping from one thing to another is how some of the best slices go! I really enjoyed this one, Arianna. I totally know what it's like to get that second wind at 1 a.m., and then you find yourself climbing the walls but oh so tired. Congratulations on getting the top spot for today though. That is one good thing about being awake.

  2. Adventure comes in many forms. Sometimes, it is taking a different path and it bringing you to untold beauty, and then you have photographs to last a lifetime. Adventure can be signing up for that class you've always wanted to take but never had the opportunity--or guts--until that moment when you do. My first dance class was like that for me. I've loved to dance for as long as I have memory, and learning how to dance for real changed my entire perspective on life. That decision to go out on a limb and take a class gave me so much more than dance skills.

    Maybe adventure looks like saying things that are on your mind that you've kept bottled up. Every once in a while, opening up your mouth opens doors.

    For me right now, actually in just a couple days, adventure looks like gallivanting around a big city and spending time with someone I adore. And it will be glorious.

    1. -This post reminds me of the adventure every person should have in there life. Having the ability and courage to try new things is an ability most people lack. And since you have that ability, it shows other people to do the same.

  3. Recently, my mom asked me why I love to knit so much. I couldn't come up with an answer until this morning. I was browsing the forums on my knitting websites, and I saw a thread about this exact question. Why do people make things they will never use? There were a lot of different answers, but they all boiled down to this: Humans create beauty. Since we are children of the most creative being in the universe, it stands to reason that we must also be creative. We are attracted to beauty like flies to honey. We need it for our survival. That is why war is so ugly. There is no beauty in war, and the blatant lack of beauty just makes the ugliness stand out even more. If you take the contrast of the things we can create, the ugliness of war is even stronger.
    So, why do I knit? I knit to create beauty.

    So, I have this obsession. It's called Gravity Falls. THIS IS MY FAVORITE TV SHOW OF ALL TIME!!! It's also, surprisingly, on Disney XD. Which the only good shows are Gravity Falls and Phineas and Ferb. But I absolutely love Gravity Falls because it's a mystery show. Even though it's a cartoon it has codes everywhere! Different kinds of codes that people have to try and decipher. It's super intriguing and I urge you to go check it out!!! We're in the second season and the new episode that came out just revealed the author of the journals!! You will understand if you watch the episodes!!! It's the greatest!!!

I haven't been since January. I know that's really not very long, but it feels like too long to me, especially since it's only forty minutes away. I'm really grateful that it's so close. Hopefully I can find some more family names to do ordinances for. Last time I had two, and I could feel how happy they were to have their work begun. To add to the fun, after every Temple trip, we all go to Chick-fil-a. I'm slightly giddy with excitement. I can't wait!

    My sister’s bunny died this last week. I personally didn’t like the bunny all that much. She smelled bad and was messy but my sister adored her. She was heartbroken to lose her bunny. Because I love my sister the loss of the bunny has also made me sad. Well it wasn’t the loss of the animal itself, more watching my sister have to go through that. She’s a sweetheart and took very good care of the bunny. When she’s upset I’m not always sure of the right thing to say because I have no clue what it is she’s going through. I’ve decided that just being there and letting her know the bunny isn’t suffering anymore is the best I can do at the moment.

      That has also happened to me. My younger sister got two birds for Christmas two years ago. One broke it's neck and the other flew away. It was sad seeing my younger sister go through with it. She walked very slowly as she prepared to bury the bird that broke its neck in a flower patch that we had in our back-yard. The birds were always chirping a constant and annoying melody but seeing my sister mourn helped me mourn with her.

    Have you ever had one of those Five Hour Energies?! I really want one! One time I had Mountain Dew and I literally have NO remembrance of that day! All I remember is that at the end of the day I was halfway across the pacific ocean duct taped to a narwhal. Apparently I had drank the Mountain Dew, and I had made it halfway to California before I got lost and bought a burrito at Hawaii. I then apparently rented three speed boats and simultaneously sailed all three ships to Africa where I adopted 6 orphan children (still confused about that part). These orphans told me how to capture the great narwall of the atlantic. I then ran to him and forced him to arm wrestle me over three gallons of milk. I won so I chugged the milk and then duct taped my self to the whale.
    Suprisingly this is all on home video on my house :)

    Dear Diary,
    today was a little stressful because I finally found out what the March Slice of Life activity thing is that I got a couple of emails about. It turns out that I was supposed to post something every day during March, but I never really got it because I'm watching English a few weeks behind, and apperantly there were technical difficulties on Liahona's side with getting it started (not surprising ;). I have learned a couple of valuable lessons. Technology can be used for education, but it is also very overly complicated and therefore occasionally useless. Also, I should really do some extra English and catch up a little bit so I can do the assignments with everybody else. Luckily for me, Sis. Jackson is super nice and will understand my situation and not dock points for this sligtly delayed participation.

    Hi guys! I don't really know what to write about... I'm so bored. I never know what to do during breaks. I mean it's nice to sleep in and stuff, but really I just wander the hose all day waiting for my public school friends to get out of school. I got up and ate breakfast, then I played dolls with my little sisters four a couple hours, then I sat and went through all the old days of slice of life to make sure I had posted on all of them. That's literally all I've done today. Now I'll probably just go on facebook and walk around the house aimlessly. So yeah, fun stuff.

    The top 5 things I LOVE about Liahona school break
    1)I'm out of school when no one else is, so I'm sitting bored at home while my friends are all in school
    2)Because I'm not in seminary at Liahona, I get to go to seminary this week, so I can't go on vacation on either spring break!
    3)All my family is still in home school, so I get to work and be a good example!
    4)I'm behind on school work, so I get to catch up, instead of procrastinating even farther!
    5)I'm still sick!

    Oh the joy of everything! Not all of these things are that bad. And I'm mostly grateful doing all of them. It's like chopping spring break in half and spreading it out over two weeks, instead of just one week. I'm sure I'll have more fruitful and fun adventures tomorrow, so stay tuned!

  13. Yesterday the young men sang in sacrament meeting. We sang the song "I need thee every hour." It was a really neat experience. As I looked out into the congregation, I could see people that were enjoying what we were singing. I know that they could feel the spirit as we sang. I remember at practice our director would tell us that we were singing to make other people feel the Spirit. We were singing to make a memory for others. As I looked into the congregation and saw their faces, I knew I was doing something good. I felt the Spirit as I sang with the rest of the young men.

  14. Hello, This is my first Slice of Life, and I'm actually going to start with yesterday.
    Yesterday was a huge Sunday because there was three different wards combined too learn what the new ward boundaries were. I helped with the sacrament, but we got confused because each ward did the sacrament differently. I was prepared to be moved to a different ward because I lived on the boundary it self, but luckily I was able to stay in my own ward. It was interesting because everyone thought that one ward would be getting more people, but instead they became a branch and about 29 people joined our ward and approximately 114 people joined the other ward!
    Me and my family, including my sisters friends, all went to celebrate my mom and cousin's birth day; we ended up watching Big Hero 6.
    Today I read a book. That was all I did today; besides the slice of life and school.

  17. Here is the first installment of a story I am writing, inspired by one of Sister Jackson's pictures and the rosebushes in our backyard and Hans Christian Andersen. :)

    It was brown, smooth at places, wrinkled at others, similarly shaped to a tear. It was a seed. The seed, blind and sleeping, dreamed of falling from its plant to the ground. It dreamed of fingers lifting it off the dead leaves, out of the mottled shadows, into the warmth of the sun. It dreamed of strong hands carrying it. The hands were calloused and used to hard work. It dreamed of being set in the cool, moist earth, and covered by a blanket of soil. Throughout many blushing dawns and smoldering sunsets, it dreamed.

    But one day, it awoke. It remembered awakening in its earthy bed. It remembered stretching up to the surface, slowly and lazily slipping through layers of rich, dark soil.

    It grew. Through spring’s dawn and summer’s noon, autumn’s dusk and winter’s night, it grew. The seed regarded its dark brown branches and deep green leaves with pride. The seed had become a plant. The wind whispered admiringly through the leaves, the rain quietly praised the plant’s beauty and the sun stretched hands of light down to the plant, urging it to join him in the sky.

    One night, the dancing stars whispered a secret to the silver lady of the sky, the moon. The moon paused in its nightly vigil to listen, and then she reached down to wake the plant. Sleepily, it looked up to the moon, and then followed her pointing beam along its branches. What the plant saw banished sleep.

    A bud nestled amid the dark green leaves. It was small and hard, a lighter green than the leaves. It was sleeping. A night breeze curled around the bud, attempting to wake it, but the plant brushed it away.

    As the moon resumed her travels, and the stars resumed their dance, the plant watched the bud. It watched the bud while the velvet night sky turned pink and gold to herald the sun. It watched the bud as the sun sailed through the satiny blue dome, and stretched the bud up to feel the warmth of the lord of the sky.

    The sun noticed the bud before noon, and sheltered the plant from his burning brilliance with a feathery cloud during the height of his heat. As he sank into the dusk, he winked kindly to the plant and the bud.

    Slowly, slowly, the bud began to uncurl. Blushing between red and pink, holding her sepals tightly to her, she peered shyly at the world. The plant beamed with joy and whispered words of welcome to its daughter, its first-bloomed rose.

    The rose gradually grew to perfection with the encouragement of the sun, and the nourishment of the rain. She spread her petals gracefully and delicately exuded a divine perfume. Her red-pink color complemented her siblings, the dark green leaves that surrounded her, and she rested gently on her stem, at ease with the world.

    The next sun-high, the plant saw a couple approaching. The woman was almost as beautiful as its rose, the plant thought, and the man was as handsome as the sunlight glinting off its leaves. Look, it told its rose.

    There was a bench near the plant, and the couple approached it. The man dusted the marble surface off, and the woman sat on it. He knelt before her, taking her hand and gently speaking. Peering at them curiously, the rose listened quietly to the passionate rhythm of the man’s husky voice, and the happy, breathless replies of the woman.

  22. It was the first day of Spring Break and I feel.....lazy. Funny, even Mondays on breaks are difficult. I just feel kind of weak and I just want to be in bed. Now, don't think that I didn't do anything today because you would be horribly wrong. I did do a lot of stuff but I just didn't have a ton of energy. And I really don't like that. Because when I don't have energy, I get a bit cranky and crabby, I'm not happy and smiley; I just wonder around, or lie around, and/or be lazy. I need and want energy. I want to do things. I don't want to be average. So, with that in mind and tomorrow being a new day, I'm going to be better and have more energy and be a little more entertaining for my family. Heaven knows they need it. ;)

    Today I did so much and feel like today was an extra-long day, but it was all fun activities so I can’t complain. I had tons of fun but am now wiped out and all the energy I woke up with is drained, my muscles ache and I’m pretty sure I’m sunburned. When I have days like this where I do a million things in one day I’m like” wow I didn't know I had that many hours in a day” then I have those days were I don’t really do anything and then its night and I’m like “well that was a waste of a day” (it happens to often) and then the days you try to fit a lot in and you just can’t do anything! I guess days are like stars, there aren't two alike (even though some feel like there on repeat).

    For family home evening, we invited a family from our ward to come over and hang out with us. We first conversed with one another, then we shared a brief mormon message, talked about it and its meaning, and then had pizza. After we did that, we went out to go bowling. For every sport I play, I always to better at the very beginning and then get progressively worse throughout the game. That could either be because I have beginner's luck or everyone else is just doing bad which makes me look good. But anyway, after we had finished, we walked back home, said goodbye to the family, gave them some of the left-overs, and then ushered them out the door. When I think about it now, I don’t think Family Home Evening just has to be for our family, but it can also be to help others and show charity towards them. This was the first time we have done something like this but I would gladly do it again if I knew the people coming over were in need for brotherly love.

    I had my best friend over last night. She loves this show on TV and every time she spends the night we watch it together. When reflecting on the show, I realized that I don't care for it too much. It's a fine show and all, and it can be entertaining, but what makes me like it is watching my friend get excited about it. She loves it and always freaks out to watch the next episode with me. I never watch the show without her, so sometimes I am far behind where she is at in the series. It has been months since we had a sleep over which resulted in there being far more episodes for me to catch up on. After playing games and talking for hours it reached 11:30pm. We contemplated if we should just go to bed, but ultimately decided against that. We watched all the episodes I had missed, and I loved seeing her excitement with each one. By the time we had finished it was 4:30. She was on her spring break. The only problem was that I am not on mine. I woke up at 8:30 and had to do school only functioning on 4 hours of sleep.

    I am pretty positive a lot of you comment as a "name," and every now and then it has you do this little thing to "make sure you are not a robot." It's normally just the usual letters all pushed together, but strangely, that time, it had like 8 pictures of food and it asked me to click on the pictures that had steak in them. It was so weird, and such a strange one of those test thingies, that it made me laugh.

It gives all the advantages of heat like the sun with out the ultaviolent rays. It also has light therepy. If you put the setting on auto it shines all the different colors of light in a ten five minute each sequence and you get all the healing advantages of each color. I like to sit in the sauna for about thirty minutes with a tall glass of ice water and just relax while I work up a good sweat and listen to music. It's so awesome!

    I have a strange love of mechanical pencils. I love to write with them. I have a very strong dislike of regular ones. I don't like that you have to sharpen them and they seem to always break. I'm not a fan of pens because you can't erase and as I am constantly making mistakes I need the eraser! Mechanical pencils always have the same width when you write while regular ones get dull and consequently thicker as time goes on. That was my rant on writing utensils. :)

    My dad used to work for the State Department as a regional medical officer, a doctor for U.S. diplomats. While we lived in Mexico my dad said that once a year he would take us to one of his outposts if our grades were good enough. So one time he was going to Surinam and Trinidad and Tobago, he said it would be a really cool trip so my brother and I went with him. While we were in Trinidad and Tobago we got to go to an amazing beach and have some shark sandwiches, they taste just like fish. We were only there for a couple days. But when we were in Surinam we got to go shooting with the green berets we shot a sniper, desert eagles and some glock 19s’, it was freaking amazing. We also got to kayak through the Amazon River, zip-line and hike through the jungle. That was an amazing trip, my dad had an awesome job!

    It's so fascinating to see how many people actually depend on the Lord. Even people who aren't members of the church have such great faith and trust. I know a few youth who definitely follow Christ, and are not members. It reminds me that this is the chosen generation. It also concerns me that there are so many youth who deny the gospel, or are distracted by worldly things. I have girls in my seminary class who don't come, and there really isn't any way that I can influence them except being positive and keep going to early morning seminary. I am so forgetful sometimes. When I do remember it happens at the weirdest times, like when I am out and can't get on the internet or at someone's house or something even weirder.   41. 9 For behold, to one is given by the Spirit of God, that he may teach the word of wisdom;

    10 And to another, that he may teach the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;

    11 And to another, exceedingly great faith; and to another, the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;

    12 And again, to another, that he may work mighty miracles;

    13 And again, to another, that he may prophesy concerning all things;

    14 And again, to another, the beholding of angels and ministering spirits;

    15 And again, to another, all kinds of tongues;

    16 And again, to another, the interpretation of languages and of divers kinds of tongues.

    17 And all these gifts come by the Spirit of Christ; and they come unto every man severally, according as he will.

    18 And I would exhort you, my beloved brethren, that ye remember that every good gift cometh of Christ.

    19 And I would exhort you, my beloved brethren, that ye remember that he is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and that all these gifts of which I have spoken, which are spiritual, never will be done away, even as long as the world shall stand, only according to the unbelief of the children of men.

    Monday. I hate Monday so much! One day I will destroy Monday and it will no longer be a day of the week. I am not suggesting that it should be renamed. I plan to make that very day of the week none existent. It would be like pressing the skip button on a movie, the things you skipped would still come to pass but you would not experience it. This skip would happen because Mondays will not exist but life would still go on as if they did exist. This way we would never again have to deal with the pains of having a first day of the week. I need to make this happen, it cant just be an idea, I have to make it a reality.

    The other day, my family went to the movie theater to see the new "Cinderella" that came out. I actually really liked it! But what I loved most about the movie was that the main theme of it was to "Have Courage & Be Kind." Isn't that message so simple yet so profound?! I think that it can really apply to the gospel. There will be times when our religion will be mocked, let down, or even persecuted. And we will have to have courage and be kind in those instances. We can't shun from the fight; we will have to defend our beliefs! But, then again, we will have to be kind in our defending. We can be passionate, but not pushy. And when we have had courage and have been kind, then that's when God will be pleased with our works.

    A long time ago we went tubing with my scout friends. We first went burger king and ate breakfast. Then we went to a lake. My friend's dad had a boat that could pull a 5 man tube. We went on the tube and the back was the most dangerous because you have to hold on to a little strap and hold it like your life is at stake. Most people fell off when they were on the back. The scout leader said we had to go, but we told him we should go at least one more time! I was on the back and I was scared! The boat made this giant wave and the wave made the tube tip to the right and a few seconds later there was people falling off the tube at slow motion and I was laughing so hard! I was still on the tube until the tube was all the way upside down. I lost my grip and I fell down with my scout friends. We had a great and fun time and hope I can do it again some time!

    1. Ether 12:27 is my favorite scripture! The reason I find this message comforting is because it explains that we are supposed to have weaknesses. We are not meant to be perfect right now. We are meant to be perfected through Him. Perfection comes through progression. But through this life, we have to be reminded that He is THE ONLY WAY. That reminder comes from trials and weaknesses, but through that we will become strong! Thanks for sharing. Your testimony is so strong, and I loved reading it.

    This week is my spring break I'll be writing about what we will be doing. We're going down to L. A. to visit our uncle. Our cousins from Utah are also coming.

    Today, we woke up early and toured L. A. by car. Our uncle was our tour guide. We drove around the city, seeing many sites like the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the City Hall, and some attractions on Hollywood Boulevard. We also toured outside of the residential areas and went Hollywood Hills. This is the place where the classic Hollywood sign is. Intermittently, we would get out of the car and walk around to see sights. By the end of the day, I was so tired that I didn't want to go to bed because that would require moving my body!

    Sickness is terrible. Your body is in misery 24/7 and all you want to do is lie down. You get behind on schoolwork that takes days or even weeks to catch back up on. You miss out on fun activities that you had been looking forward to. Sometimes you can’t even eat what you want to eat. I don’t get sick that often, but when I do, I get really sick. When I was younger I got to go to Africa. This was super cool but on the drive to the airport I got the flu. I then proceeded to throw up 17 times throughout the plane rides, walking through security and waiting in lines. Needless to say, I’m glad that I haven’t gotten sick recently, and that today all I have is cough.

We started to drive up to Anaheim it was about a 3 hour drive from San Diego. As we were getting to where we wanted to park the car we drove passed Disney we pointed it out to her, she didn't even realize what was going on yet. We parked the car, told her that we were going to Disney, she started to get really excited. We then stood in line to get on the bus, she started to freak out, she was crying trying to run back to the truck, it was a nightmare to try to get her into the park. I almost didn't do a prompting a 2 weeks ago that I'm glad I did. I felt I should invite our neighbors to have Family Home Evening with us. (This is the same family I wrote about in another slice that I invited to our FHE). Since it was late notice, I didn't want to. As I was preparing the lesson, however, I felt I should do it on faith; I knew I couldn't teach this unless I followed the prompting. I tried to prepare another lesson, but nothing came. Eventually, I prayed and decided to invite them. After inviting them, the lesson came quickly and soon I was teaching the lesson. They've been with our family before and have met with missionaries. The spirit guided me on what to say and discuss throughout the lesson. During the lesson, I felt to tell them that I felt inspired to invite them. In the end, we had a fun time. Hopefully, it helped them. Don't procrastinate anything, especially promptings.

Not because she does bad, she does really good, but the little tiny kids that dance before or after she does are really funny and cute. They'll go on with their group and while most of the kids are following along fairly well and they are off doing their own thing. It's especially funny, and adorable, when the little kids are bowing and waving at their families and things like that.

Service is something I try to improve on every day and it’s one of the most productive things you can do with your time.
