Slice of Life: DAY 28

Remember that you are writing a snippet of your life, a slice, not giving us the whole pie, so write well but write with brevity.

After you post your slice, strive to comment on at least three other slices.

How to get entries into the raffle at the end of the challenge:
  1. Post your slice here BY 9 PM (MDT). For each time you post, you get an entry.
  2. Comment on other slices at anytime throughout the challenge. For every five thoughtful comments that you make, you get an entry.
  3. Slice every day for the entire month (31 days), and you will get an entry into a special drawing.

I have a strange liking for thunderstorms. They can be scary and loud when I am trying to fall asleep at night, but when it is in the daytime or when I am not trying to fall asleep, they are actually quite enjoyable! I love the how the sound carries and the rain hits the roof and the ground. I love the melancholy yet strangely comforting feeling that lingers when it is thunder storming. I love the way it makes me want to curl up with a good book on a comfy bean bag with a blanket.

I used to have a cd that was a thunderstorm cd, and it was really awesome. It was super relaxing. I listened to it every now and then. It ran for about 30 minutes straight. Some people who hate storms probably would never want that kind of cd, but for me, it was really awesome to have. I lost that cd last week. I am so sad I lost it! It is somewhere in my house; I hope I find it soon! :)

    Thunderstorms are amazingggggg...

  4. Slice of Life:

I know that this topic has already been used a bit, but I would like to add a bit to it. Friendship. Friendship is a very valuable thing. You can have friendships with many people, but only a few of them are real. A true friend won't lie to you, make fun of you, or care if you are girly or a tomboy. A real friend will support you when you do something good, and let you know if you are in the wrong. A true friend doesn't care if you are rich or poor, or mind if you suddenly burst into song. A true friend will be your friend forever, no matter what you do or say. A true friend is cherished, and loved, and should be treated with great respect. A true friend cries with you, laughs with you, and loves you unconditionally. I only have a few true friends, and those are the people who I cherish in my heart. :)

    1. I don't think we could ever cover the topic of friendship enough. The descriptor 'unconditionally' is a key to true friendship. Without unconditional love, we cannot love very many people because there will always be something to drive love away if we let it. Thank you for sharing this today. I needed it.

  5. Here is my continued commonly confused words story:

As we drove to the competition, my sister gives me valuable counsel. “Just be yourself. If the judges don’t like it, that’s okay. They may just have different taste than you.” I knew she spoke with insight because she won this competition last year. We arrived, but were stuck in a long queue of people. Everyone had some work of art or another, all packed neatly and covered up. When I finally got to the front, I was asked to provide current contact information, then I was given a serial number to post on the back of my painting so it didn’t get mixed up with anyone else’s. I said goodbye to my sister who’s competition was in a different building. Before I could enter the building, a censor had to check my artwork for originality. He bent over to lift up the blanket I draped over my canvas, and peeked at my masterpiece. He straightened up and smiled at me. I took that as a compliment. He kindly showed me where to go. I made my way to a very large room, where tons of other people had already set up their work. I was too nervous to be my bold, energetic self, so I chose a corner near the door to set up my artwork. They had two strong cords hanging from the ceiling that everyone was to attach their painting to. I carefully hoisted my canvas up and clipped them to the cables. After setting everything up, I meandered around, looking at all the other works of art. There was an incredible watercolor of the capitol building with the flag flying behind it. I was sure that was going to win. Someone thought of the idea that every contestant would choose a painting, other than their own, and vote for it. The judges still had the ultimate decision, but this was a fun way to pass time. We all walked around over the course of the morning, canvassing our artwork. Finally, the judges came. We all complaisantly assumed our positions by our artwork. I daresay that nobody was breathing, except for the hard-faced judges. Our eyes followed them as they walked to the center of the room. They started by announcing the five honorable mentions, then third place, then second place. My name had not been called, and I figured it would never be. “And first place goes to….” The next thing I knew there were lots of cheers and someone was guiding me to the center of the room and handing me a very large blue ribbon.

Puppies are the cutest things in the whole world!! My miniature Shih Tzu had 4 perfect puppies a few years ago. The first one was Molly, who was the runt of the litter, but my grandparents have her now and she is.... no longer the runt. Next came Tommy! We called him Tombus the Rhombus, because he was a Rhombus! He could not crawl when the others did because his arms were to short and his tummy was to big! He would lift his back feet and pull himself with his front feet. It was the cutest thing you'd ever see!! Next came Mooshi. My brother really wanted to name one Mooshoo, from Mulan, but it was a girl so we named her Mooshi. She was almost except for the very tip of her tail that was white. Last came Sally. Who is the sweetest puppy you could ever meet.
Tommy was automatically mine. Well not really mine because we sold him on Christmas Eve. I'm sure he made those kids really happy on Christmas morning finding a puppy under their tree. Moshi went to an older couple who had just lost their dog, Molly went to my Grandparents, and we kept Sally.
Sally is Moms and Heidi, her mother, is mine.

This morning I woke up at 6:00 AM to go to the temple with my wards youth group. We are doing this thing called “Passport to Utah Temple’s” (something like that) and what we do is we go to all the temples in Utah and do baptisms for the dead, and we are going to finish are passport by going to the Payson Temple. Since we did the Bountiful temple today we only have one temple left to visit, which will be the Monticello temple… the farthest one.

It’s always a good experience visiting the temples and doing baptisms for the dead with my ward. I can’t wait to finish up with the Payson temple in a few months!

Yesterday I took a tour of a community college campus. I have also taken a tour of BYU Provo, and the two had the same kind of atmosphere. It was pretty quiet because it was a Friday, but there were a few students there studying. It was a relatively small campus, but it was really pretty. There were lots of palm trees around the walkways, and there were balconies on some of the buildings with great views. It was just really peaceful. Usually when I think about the future and college and stuff, it terrifies me. At that campus, though, I got kind of excited for growing up.

But what they don't tell you is that though life gets harder, you grow stronger and smarter which allows you to be able to handle those tougher situations. You know this, as your post says that you are no longer afraid of growing up, but excited now.

Stake Youth Conference. Activities and dinner. Dance goes 'til 12 am. Stay up until 3:15 am with all my friends trying to solve my Rubik's cubes. You could probably hear our laughter a mile away, but we didn't care. If you ask the scoutmaster's son, he will say that we pulled an all nighter. Next day, practically sleeping through all of the talks. Why would they plan stake youth conference like that? The youth are just going to be tired after the dance the night before and sleep through the talks! After talks, watched some kids play volleyball for an hour and a half. They asked me if I wanted to play with them, but I was way too tired. When I get home, I hit the pillow at about 3:15 pm? I can't remember, my brain is too groggy. Wake up at around 5:45! So, this Spring Break I watched the original Star Wars trilogy. And I'll tell you, I enjoyed it. The only Star Wars movie I had seen up until now was the first in the first in the prequel trilogy... and I knew enough even then that that didn't really represent the best of the franchise. 13. I like Frodo and Sam from The Lord of the Rings. It always seemed to them that all hope was lost, but then a way appeared and they got through to the end. When it seems like all hope is gone for us, the Lord will provide a way. We are never alone and never without hope. There is always hope though we may not know that we are hoping. We need to put our trust in the Lord. I think that The Lord of the Rings is very symbolic. If you read it you can learn some things like I have.

  14. Two years ago, I had the wonderful opportunity to be on the Shakespeare team and go to Cedar City and compete in the Shakespeare competition which is part of the Utah Shakespeare Festival held there. It was a fun two and a half days full of new experiences and excitement. Near the end of the competition they have the Showcase. It's where they choose some competition pieces from the past two days that were different and interesting and they get to perform them in front of a whole bunch of people. I knew it was going to be cool and interesting; but I wasn't ready for the awesomeness of one special competition piece. It was the first piece of the Showcase- an ASL school had come to compete; they did a scene from Macbeth where the three witches are mixing some very bizarre ingredients in their cauldron. While the deaf students were acting on the stage, off stage and next to the wall stood hearing students- they were saying the lines and making the noises. They were synchronized for pretty much the whole entire scene; there were only a couple places where either hearing or the deaf got ahead or behind the other. When they finished everyone in the audience stood up and applauded in ASL. There was no sound except for the students leaving the stage. Throughout the rest of the Showcase their coaches signed to them lines of the other performing students. It was really cool and interesting to see the coaches sign to the deaf students- they showed a lot of emotion through their facial expressions and signing.
After the Showcase, when we were leaving to go to the awards ceremony, I saw one of the deaf girls that had played a witch in the hallway. I signed to her 'good job' with an, I think and hope, impressed and happy facial expression; and she signed back 'thank you'. What a simple conversation, but, oh boy, did I feel awesome! What an awesome experience! I had never signed to a deaf person in my life, and then it happened in 2 seconds in one itty-bitty conversation. And the only thing that could have made it better happened a couple hours later.
That night, at the awards ceremony, they won either first, second, or third place. I don't remember which one they placed because I was super happy for them. Once again, there was not a single noise as everyone in the room stood up and applauded in sign language. They all crowded around each other, got their picture taken, sat back down, and, I hope, remembered that night for a very, very long time. Nothing could have made this whole entire experience better except for when two of Liahona's girls got called up because they won first place with their duo scene, and then when Liahona got called up because we had won third place for our ensemble scene in our division. A night to be remembered? Absolutely. The highlight? All of it.

There is pain and fear in my recollection but also joy and happiness I can never forget.

In a month I have grown as person, slain some of my demons and risen above things I thought I could never overcome.

I have read books and lived fantastical lives, I have written until the late hours of the morning and I have painted and sculpted tell my hands are numb.

This is the thrill to be alive, to be able to look back and sigh.

I just went to the Young Women's Conference. It was really cool and inspiring. I really loved Elder Eyring's talk about the special women in his life and how we are apart of God's plan. How we are Daughters of God and he loves us and has given us special abilities to cherish and give life to others. It made me want to improve within myself and my talents and abilities and be open to God more often to be closer to him. To love others, have courage, be kind, be faithful, be happy, be charitable, and serve others; and the Lord in doing that. I love mornings. The are the sign of a fresh start and a new day. I'm not saying I'm a morning person, I can never get up unless I'm in nature. The kind of morning I like are when I am in nature. During Trek or girls camp, I was always one of the first to get up. At girls camp we were in the middle of a forest, so when I got up, the dappled sunlight had a greenish tint, and the foliage- rich ground was covered in dew. The smell is sweet and clean. The air is damp and chilly, but I don't care. It's refreshing after the stuffy tents. I sit down on a stump and breath in the thick morning air. Soon other campers get up to make breakfast. I go back into my tent wear the others are beginning to wake. I get dressed and tie a bandana around my head to keep the hair out of my eyes. When I emerge again from my tent, the sun is brighter, and the air is starting to warm up. The forest seems to greet you and wish you a good day. The trees seem to talk, busily discussing the new people who are living among them. The smell of french toast slowly drifts over to my nose, and in return, I drift over to the table and we all gather to eat.

  19. 'Kennedy: Face the world with all the kindness, courage, charity, compassion, faith, happiness, determination and love that is in your beautiful soul.'

I finished writing on the piece of decorated paper. Slipping it to the young girl at my side, I smiled kindly at her. She smiled back, her young face bright with the joy and happiness of life. In writing the note, I wondered, Would this have made a difference in my life had an older friend given it to me when I was her age? I don't know, but I do remember that every ray of kindness that had shone on me as a younger girl had made me brighter. And now, I found myself passing on those rays, lifting up those who followed.
One of these rays was the little drawing and note that I handed to Kennedy, only recently 8. It had swirls of pink and purple, green and blue, red and orange, and tiny flowers all over it. The flowers were significant, to me.

I sometimes think of myself as a flower. When I was younger, I was happy and confident and bright, spreading perfume and color to all who crossed my path. The younger years of my life are one long sunny day in my mind, only broken by the occasional raindrop or shadow. And then, I started to change. No longer a bud, unsure of my potential to blossom further, I started to wonder if I was a weed. I let my head dip low, let my petals curl close, held myself in with fear and doubt. That isn't entirely gone; I wonder if any human ever loses those nefarious two.
But then, a few fellow flowers slipped to my side. Also quiet at first, they enabled me to start to blossom once more. They reflected the sunlight and color that I had let slip through my fingers, and shone it on me until I could grasp it once more. They taught me to raise my head, to spread my petals, to share my unique perfume. They taught me that I was no weed, but a beautiful flower. They became my closest friends because they were rays of kindness, and still are. I am eternally indebted to the rays that sustained me when I had surrounded myself with gray rain and dark clouds. I am ever grateful to their kindness, courage, charity, compassion, faith, happiness, determination and love.

After all the other girls had gone I called my brother to see where he was. And he had gone to the Harmons in Orem! He immediately left to come get me, and I kinda just walked around for a few minutes until he got there. I have always had bad experiences with getting left places and getting lost, but I think last Saturday was the worst, and to have 2 right in a row is weird, but this wasn't all that bad, at least it was during the day!

Do you get red spots on your skin?
I have heard of a type of clay that you put on your skin to help with cuts, wounds, or any kind of sore that needs healing.
This clay is called Redmond Clay. It is also found in the city of Redmond. I have tried it on my red spots and for a couple of days, I thought it didn't work. Then I continued putting on the clay and within a 2 weeks, my spots disappeared. It was incredible! My mother gave me a little booklet that has many pictures of different people's wounds and cuts and helps them to heal. Although, I have tried it on open wounds and it doesn't heal as fast. I suggest using it for burns, sores, rashes, and as a first aid kit. If you don't like it, you can return it. You can find Redmond Clay almost any store expect Costco.

  30. On Saturday I had the opportunity to go to a concert that focused on the importance of friends. The concert was really inspiring, and I could really feel the spirit there. It reminded me of just how grateful I am for having friends that I can lean on and learn from. Thanks for being awesome!

    1. That's cool Joseph. Friends ARE super important, but they can also be super dangerous. You have to make sure that the friends you choose have a good soul.

By the way, you don't have one apparently. :) but that's just a myth.

On March 28, 2015, I had the opportunity to participate in a service. This service involved picking up trash along the highway on our island. The things I saw and retrieved were both bizarre and disgusting. It's like the people who were littering thought that the wildlife next to the road was meant to be a garbage can. I saw TV's, wooden doors, spare tires (still all intact), shoes, clothes, homework assignments (they didn't have a dog to use as an excuse), refrigerators, cute golden Labrador puppies (still alive), parts of a truck, beer cans, coffee cans, regular cans, and wine bottles. I am editing out a great deal of things due to its disgusting, gross description. When we were done with the trash, we returned to the church building, had lunch, and then went home. I was tired, hungry, hot, thirsty, and depleted. Yet, despite this final analysis, I would do it again in a heartbeat.

    1. That sounds... like it was interesting. Those poor puppies! As for everything else that sounds disgusting. I never understood why people littered so much. Why not wait for a garbage can. It is not that hard. Those type of people are ruining the environment. Thank you the service you did.

On the 2 lane highway that takes us into downtown of my little town there is a ton of trash, and it all collects there because of the wind. My dad stopped to pick some of it up one time, and ever since then I have wanted to have a combined YW/YM activity service where we pick the trash up. I think it would look a lot prettier and help the environment, but it wouldn't be very safe because of how close to the road it is.

Anyway, I think it is super awesome that you did that! Way to go, Mr. Environmentalist! Haha!

We have moved a lot around. Up and down and all around. When people ask me where I am from I just want to say “Canada, Peru, Arizona, Utah, Washington, take your pick.” Each place I have lived holds a special place in my heart. I miss each place for their own reasons. I hold the memories dear and close. My friends as well. I might not remember all the little details but I remember enough. I will always have those memories with me and for that I am thankful. I don’t consider one place home more than any other. I can’t pick a favorite place, it is not possible for me.

In the forests of the night,
    What immortal hand or eye
    Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare sieze the fire?

And what shoulder, & what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp
    Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears,
And water'd heaven with their tears,
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

    Tyger! Tyger! burning bright

The snow is still here. In case you missed it Boston broke the snow fall record for the first time since, well forever. We got SO much snow! It’s insane. It’s finally starting to melt. I am thrilled except now you can tell the roads are a disaster. It’s rained the last few days and I’m so glad it isn’t snow. It’s been fifty degrees out and the snow has been steaming and causing all sorts of crazy mist.

I heard about that! We received snow right about the same time in NC, and I am guessing it was the same cold front. We didn't have that much though! I can't believe yours is just starting to melt! Hopefully you had snow plows for when it was several feet high!

Just got a grenade launcher named Dr. Mario which is FREAKING HILARIOUS. And you may be looking at me and thinking, "Why Shane? Why? Why is that name so hilarious?" To which I reply: "The grenades are called pills." But i can't trade it or sell it, which means I STILL cant give my cousin his birthday present. This is a really stupid process. First! I can't get the money in my account for a few days. Second! Once the money is in the account, I have to wait to use it. THIRD! I have to wait to actually give the item away. But all this waiting will be worth it. After about 2 weeks (I'm too lazy to count how long) I SHALL HAVE MY BIRTHDAY PRESENT!

I watched my brother's production of Annie today, and it was awesome!! My brother (who is Mr. Warbucks) was really a good actor, and the Annie sounded like a goddess. Like forreal though, if a goddess had a voice, it would be her voice. Everyone else did sooooo awesome, I can't even write it down how impressed I was of how everyone performed, so.... Annie was fantastic. You should all come watch it, because it was spot on.

You can do anything you want to restricts! I hope I can help more people in the future and be the best leader in the HHC server!

  40. I can't believe that I'm going into the 10th grade next year. It is so crazy how time flies by so fast. Soon all of the kids in this school will go on missions, get married, and have kids. Life is so short we need to really enjoy our life and try not to stress out about everything. Soon enough we will be ready to go back with Heavenly Father and we won't want to regret anything!

My brother comes home from his mission in 47 days! I can’t even convey how incredibly excited I am! He’s only going to be home for about a week and a half before he goes down to BYU for summer school. I wish we could get more time with him but I’m ecstatic that I will be able to give him a big hug and hear his voice in real life. After my older sister left for college I got really close to my older brother. When he left on his mission it was really hard to say goodbye. But now that he comes home in less than two months, I can’t contain my excitement!

You know that certain feeling you get when there is one enveloping stratus cloud covering the entire sky? There is a sort of gray gloomy stillness, I'm hoping for the rain that we really need. I actually don't mind this weather. It's quiet and makes you want to wrap up in a blanket and drink something warm while you do school.
